They share in this episode that after they purchased their first home together — which, yes, was a brownstone —they started a blog and Instagram account about their renovation process. What started as something to share with family and friends quickly turned into them helping other people renovate their brownstones. So, they did what anyone else would have done! They quit their corporate jobs and became the Brownstone Boys.Jordan and Barry talk about their passion for preserving original details when renovating brownstones. They say that craftsmanship is very important to them and that their biggest goal is restoring the way brownstones used to be made. They also discuss the definition of a brownstone, they share tips for anyone about to embark on a renovation, no matter they style of their space, and they suggest the two biggest things everyone should talk to their contractors about at the start of any project. Finally, you'll hear them share on how history has unfolded — meaning, the things they've discovered — when they've opened walls during some of their renovation projects.LEARN MORE ABOUT THE BROWNSTONE BOYSWebsite: Thebrownstoneboys.comInstagram: @brownstoneboysYouTube: BrownstoneBoysOTHER EPISODES YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKEBeing Home With Very Gay Paint, Muralists & ComediansBeing Home With Leanne Ford, Interior Designer and HGTV StarBeing Home With Trisha Sprouse, DIY Home Decor ExpertBeing Home with Leeway Home's Sam Dumas and Lyle Maltz, Dinnerware Designers CONNECT WITH ME, LAURIE GUNNING GROSSMANHave questions? In episode 84 of The Great Women Artists Podcast, Katy Hessel interviews the esteemed writer Patricia Albers on TINA MODOTTI! Tina Modotti (1896–1942) was a trailblazer. Born in Italy, she found herself at the centre of Hollywood in the 1920s, the post-Revolution era of Mexico, in the midst of Communism with the Muralists, the latter of which she captured through raw images, using her camera - her tool - to engage with political and social issues. Nothing short of a revolutionary, Modotti documented the spirit of era. Her own life was never far from drama. Raised in Italy, in1913 she migrated to the US to join her father. Adored for her striking looks, she soon began work as a model, then an actor, starring ina string of Hollywood silent films.  Taking up photography, in 1923she moved to Mexico City to join the cultural avant-garde and experimented with intimate, hazy studies of close-up wilted flowers and light-filled architectural environments – some of the earliest examples of abstraction in photography.  As the 1920s progressed, and her involvement in the Communist movement deepened (officially joining the party in 1927), Modotti turned her lens towards social documentary, photographing empathetic, yet I think triumphant, portraits of locals and labourers, and took her camera to anti-fascist, leftist rallies (with friends Frida Kahlo andDiego Rivera).  However, following the assassination of her then-lover, the Cubist revolutionary Julio Antonio Mella, she was forced to leave Mexico and abandon photography entirely. Fleeing Mexico for WeimarBerlin, Soviet Russia and then Spain, in 1939 she returned to MexicoCity, but died three years later in the back of a taxi... Some still question the cause of her death, viewing it with suspicion due to her ardently leftist politics!!!!  ONE OF THE GREATEST STORIES IN ART HISTORY! ENJOY! Patricia is the author of Shadows, Fire, Snow: The Life of Tina Modotti and curator of the formerly travelling exhibition, Tina Modotti and the Mexican Renaissance, a show and a book focussing on one of the greatest photographers of the early twentieth century: Tina Modotti. Murals have become an iconic part of Nashville's visual identity, especially on social media (Taylor Swift's famous wings photo, anyone?). However, murals and street art have exploded in recent years due to major beautification efforts like the Nashville Walls Project, as well as the increasing popularity of Instagram-friendly photo ops. In this episode we're joined by a panel of artists to learn more about the history of murals in Nashville, how things have changed in recent years, and what that means for the future of street art in Nashville. Alfredo Uribe and Lucia Ippolito-Gonzalez's love story revolves around milk. In this special episode of Storied: SF, we get to know Fredo and we reconnect with Lucia, our guest on Season 3, Episode 42 (Part 1 / Part 2). First, we hear from Fredo. He was born in Oakland and grew up in Pinole. His neighbors there had a dairy delivery company and San Francisco was a big part of their route. Young Fredo and Robert Frangieh were pals, and Fredo soon found himself running routes in The City with his buddy Robert and Robert's dad's company. They'd head out in the dark to a mostly quiet, empty city. But Fredo was hooked. Eventually, they gave him the Mission route. He felt like San Francisco, and specially, the Mission, had it all. Fredo talks about the changes he's seen in San Francisco over years, especially around the South of Market/Oracle Field area. He reminisces about going to Giants games back in the Barry Bonds days. He was falling in love with San Francisco. From there, we hear the story of how Lucia and Fredo met. It's a charming AF city love story involving the two of them doing what they do: art and milk delivery. (At this point in the recording, their very young daughter appears on screen and distracts Jeff with her infinite cuteness. Please excuse.) Fredo obviously knew a little about Lucia. But on that first date, they walked through Balmy Alley and other areas around the Mission where Lucia's murals live vibrantly. He was blown away that much more. We hear the story of how Fredo decided to start Los Lecheros, his label. He was teased by folks he delivered milk to, so he decided to own it by putting "Lechero" on a T-shirt. For Fredo (and Lucia), the lechero symbolizes the hard-working folks who got up way before everyone else and actually came to people's houses to deliver their goods. That connection and community is what they're going for with Los Lecheros. They have dreams of turning it into a place in the alley to get coffee. We talk a little about the Balmy Alley event that took place on Feb. 12, 2022. It marked the official product launch for Los Lecheros. But "Lovers Lane" was so much more.  There were vendors galore: face-painting, clothing, food, drinks, DJs, and more. We end this podcast with Fredo's and Lucia's thoughts on what it means to still be here in San Francisco. We recorded this podcast on Zoom in February 2022. Photography by Michelle Kilfeather

You have to work for your art. Odd jobs help a lot of people out along the way. If this has also been your experience of becoming an artist, that is okay.Include your followers in the products you make because they are the ones who will buy the finished product. Create the art that makes you happy and at the same time remember who will buy your art. Utilize polls to get the best information if you need input!Try not to simply follow the trends. Instead you can try to adapt or learn from a trend to your own style and audience.First impressions are important. You can control the experience your customers have, if you run your own shop. Caring about the little details shows your customers you care about them. When you send something from an independent creator, your customer should feel like they are receiving a gift. There is more than one way to stand up for what you believe in. Your skillset might lend itself well to making posters to help spread the message, while other people's talents might be in organising or communicating. For years people didn’t encourage their children to become artists because artists don’t have control of their work, they are at the mercy of the market and the buyer. Very Gay Paint began as an indoor mural project. When you put something up on a wall inside a home it is very different to a print or a piece on canvas. Consider the environment where your mural is going to live. Try to avoid a situation where your mural is fighting with the furniture in the room, or other art on the walls. Make the mural an extension of the interior design, the furniture and the architecture of the home. There is a significant number of people creating murals. Reach out to the community for help and to collaborate with like minded people.Unsure of how to present yourself on social media? Nick and Jenson use their comedy to stand out, but if you are shy, remember -  be yourself and follow your joy. Make content that makes you laugh and that makes you feel good.Cultivate your relationships so that you have time with friends outside of your work. Value yourself as a complete person, not just as an artist.Stay SocialFollow Very Gay Paint on Instagram @verygaypaintJoin the @muralists community on InstagramSign up for our newsletter here
