The Name "Tosh" is synonymous with Reggae music because Peter Tosh was one of the founding members of The Wallers who played with Bob Marley. It was in the 60's and 70's that Reggae music started to become popular with the anti-war and protest era of the USA. Now his daughter Naimbe is carrying on the Rastafarian tradition while raising awareness about the injustices of the failed war on drugs by incarcerating thousands of people for simple possession crimes. That includes Naimbe's late brother Jawara who died of injuries suffered in a New Jersey prison where he was assaulted by fellow inmates. Justice for Jawara now drives Naimbe, a former school teacher in the Boston schools. Naimbe McIntosh joins In The Weeds with Jimmy Young on Pro Cannabis Media.

Niambe Mcintosh is the last child of the revolutionary musician and activist Peter Tosh. Despite being the youngest of nine, Niambe is an executive of her father's estate and brand. In addition, she puts heavy emphasis on a health and wellness lifestyle while advocating for freedom, justice, and equity. Born in Jamaica and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, Niambe is a frequent traveler between the two distinctly different worlds. As a precocious child and young adult, she recognized society's disparities in lifestyle, infrastructure, income, and opportunities; thus, her passion for helping those who are marginalized ignited. McIntosh first graduated the Wentworth Institution of Technology with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, then later obtained her Master's degree in Education. Niambe spent her early twenties as an engineer, but her passion for children influenced her to change her career. After teaching in the Boston Public School system for a decade, in February of 2017, Niambe's career as a teacher was abruptly interrupted by a serious and unfortunate event. While incarcerated for cannabis possession, Jawara McIntosh (Tosh1), a musician, cannabis activist, and son of Peter Tosh, was brutally attacked in jail. Since then, on behalf of the Tosh Family, Niambe launched Justice for Jawara, a campaign geared towards breaking the stigma around cannabis and supporting families directly affected by its prohibition. In 2016, the Tosh family opened the Peter Tosh Museum, a landmark edifice located in Kingston, Jamaica. The museum exhibits and codifies the physical and intellectual properties of its namesake, Peter Tosh. In 2017, Niambe and her family founded the Peter Tosh Foundation. The philanthropic intent of the Peter Tosh Foundation is to uphold her father's legacy through education, empowerment, and advocacy. Niambe is a woman who is serious about transforming minds and furthering equal rights and justice. She wishes to use the foundation in order to serve as a mechanism for disseminating the ideals of freedom, justice and equity to the international platform. Niambe McIntosh urges you to visit the Peter Tosh Museum in Kingston, Ja, and delve into the life and legacy of Peter Tosh. Furthermore, Niambe is available for speaking engagements, consulting and other forms of outreach. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/cannabisdiversity/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/cannabisdiversity/support

Today we interview Niambe McIntosh, the youngest child of Peter Tosh who has stepped up to the mantle to carry on her father's message and legacy. A renaissance woman, an Alpha Woman, she serves many roles including Executive Director of the Peter Tosh Legacy & Brand; Managing Member of Tosh Holdings LLC; Board Chairperson for the Peter Tosh Foundation Ltd.; and President of PT Capital LLC.Niambe was instrumental in the planning and development of the Peter Tosh Museum which opened in 2016 and is a national landmark edifice in Kingston, Jamaica dedicated to the preservation of her father's legacy. Additionally, Mcintosh and her family founded the Peter Tosh Foundation in 2017 to serve as the vehicle for the realization of her father's dream.Niambe's fire for advocacy also stems from a family crisis in February of 2017 in which her brother Jawara McIntosh – musician and cannabis activist – was brutally attacked while incarcerated for cannabis possession in Bergen County Jail in New Jersey. Jawara later succumbed to his injuries in 2020 which compelled Niambe to raise awareness of the dire conditions faced by prisoners, the need for prison reform, and the necessity for legalization of cannabis nationwide.Newly motivated, Niambe formed partnerships and alliances to strategically address these issues. Understanding that pressure must be brought to bear on those who actively and passively maintain our current system, Niambe organized and participated in protests; gave lectures; and lobbied congress; McIntosh also serves on the Board of Directors for the non-profit cannabis advocacy organization, Minorities For Medical Marijuana (M4MM), and serves on the advisory board for the Last Prisoner Project, an organization geared towards cannabis criminal justice reform.Timestamps:Growing up in both Boston and Jamaica as a child (4:48)How her father's music influenced her (6:53)The Peter Tosh Museum (10:30)Her brother Jawara McIntosh (16:12)The injustice of prison labour (32:17)Legalization in Massachusetts (37:55)Seen by Peter Tosh (41:32)Interesting facts about Rastafari (44:46)Podcast researcher Anvi SethiSign up to Alpha Woman Co at: https://alphawomanco.comLast Prisoner ProjectMinorities For Medical Marijuana (M4MM)Peter Tosh FoundationPodcast sponsorship enquiries email: hello@alphawomanco.comFollow us on social media @alphawomanco

Niambe McIntosh is the daughter of, Rastafarian and cannabis advocate, Peter Tosh. Peter is well-known for being a founding member of The Wailers as well as his songs "Legalize It" and "I am that I am" amongst others. Niambe sat down with Lit & Lucid to share the tragic story about her brother Jawara educating us further on The War on Drugs, and shining light on ways we all can help this fight. Jawara followed in his father's footsteps as an advocate and musician. Unfortunately, Jawara found himself in a legal situation after being stopped by the police having found cannabis in his car. What seemed like a situation the family would get through at the time turned into a living nightmare. Jawara was facing 10-20 years in prison for his cannabis charge in Bergen County, NJ. Being scared of the Bergen County court system Jawara took a 6-month plea deal in January 2017. While serving time Jawara was brutally attacked by an inmate in which he suffered life-threatening brain injuries causing him to go into a coma, being unable to speak, walk or talk from that day forward. Niambe and her family stayed by his side day in and day out caring for his every need, helping him with basic motor skills while trying to come to terms with what had happened to their dear brother. Unfortunately, despite all their best efforts and prayers Jawara lost his life in July 2020. The Peter Tosh Foundation was created to continue the work Peter tirelessly advocated for in Jamaica including cannabis legalization. Today Niambe is passionate about advocating for prison reform, social equity, expungement efforts, and legislation that will truly change the War on Drugs. Tune in to the latest episode to learn more about Justice for Jawara and how you too can become more educated and help stop the War on Drugs. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/lit-and-lucid/support

“As a nonviolent offender, my brother faced the ultimate consequences of what cannabis prohibition really does to families.”On June 15th, 2013 Jawara McIntosh, musician, cannabis activist, and son of reggae genius Peter Tosh, was pulled over on the New Jersey Turnpike, not because he was speeding but more likely because of his dreadlocks. The cops found sixty five pounds of marijuana in his car and locked him away in a county jail for six months. After being released on $200,000 bond, Jawara, who performed under the name Tosh 1, pled guilty to possession with intent to distribute and took a plea deal which landed him in Bergen County Jail in Hackensack, NJ, with a one-year sentence. On February 21st, 2017, just six months shy of his release date, Jawara, then 37, was attacked by another inmate. He sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI) that left him in a coma, unable to speak, move or care for himself for three agonizing years until his death, July 17, 2020. Like his dad and the rest of his family, Jawara was a Rastafarian who used cannabis as a religious sacrament. In honor of International Peter Tosh Day, which occurs on 420, Jawara’s sister, (and Tosh’s youngest daughter), Niambe McIntosh, joins us to tell the story of her brother’s death and how it spurred her into action on his behalf. What Niambe, who today heads the Peter Tosh Foundation and is a cannabis entrepreneur, failed to tell me in this interview was that her brother’s story bears an eerie resemblance to an incident that happened to her father. Back in 1978, a gang of 8 policemen saw Peter Tosh standing outside of a recording studio in Kingston, Jamaica with a joint in his hand. They beat him with Billy clubs, then locked him in jail. According to reports, his skull was shattered in several places, his ribs were broken, and his hands had been crushed. When Bob Marley visited his former Wailers’ bandmate in the hospital and saw the battered body, he wept. We’re bringing you this podcast in celebration of 420, 2021, as a reminder that despite the progress that the march toward legalization has sustained in the last years, the fight for justice and criminal justice reform is still far from over. Please have a Happy High Holiday but take a moment to remember all of those who came before who contributed to making this High Holiday possible.

This week on Womanity – Women in Unity, Dr. Amaleya Goneos-Malka talks to Pan African Parliament member and Member of Parliament of The Gambia, Fatou K. Jawara. In The Gambia she serves on the following committees: gender, health, women, children, disaster, humanitarian relief, defence and security, as well as the independent electoral commission’s ombudsman.  Some of her focal areas in relation to women encompass: supporting female farmers, striving for gender parity, increasing the representation of women across the spectrum – targeting 30%, and overcoming outdated thinking that relegates women to care giving roles.  She narrates some of her challenges in The Gambia’s political struggle which included imprisonment, torture and intimidation.   A few of her takeouts from the Pan African Parliament, which was held under the African Union’s theme for 2020: “Silencing the guns: creating conducive conditions for Africa’s development”, are to grow her knowledge base and implement procedures and sensitisation methods to combat issues raised by the conference.  Tune in for more…
