Send us a textIn this episode of Art Wank, we focus on Australian artists Michelle Cawthorn and Peter Sharp and their recent creative residency at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Connecticut, USA. Together, they reflect on how this experience produced a new body of work and the opportunity to explore the foundations archives. During her residency at the Albers Foundation, Cawthorn immersed herself in collage of birds and particularly focussed on the work of Anni Albers. Sharp engaged directly with the legacy of Josef Albers, exploring how colour, geometry and perception can reveal new ways of seeing the landscape by painting on Albers book on colour, reinterpreting the pages for himself. Michelle Cawthorn – BioMichelle Cawthorn is a Sydney-based multidisciplinary artist whose practice is rooted in drawing and extends across collage, painting, sculpture and installation. Her work explores memory, identity and belonging through an autobiographical lens, often using repetition, pattern and sensory triggers to evoke fragments of experience.Cawthorn holds undergraduate degrees in Fine Art and Art Education from the University of New South Wales, and completed a PhD in Fine Arts in 2021. She has held numerous solo exhibitions and participated in over sixty group shows across Australia. Her work is represented by OLSEN Gallery, Sydney.Peter Sharp – BioPeter Sharp is an Australian artist whose practice has, for more than three decades, investigated how the natural world can be understood through abstraction. Working across drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture, Sharp captures the structural and rhythmic essence of nature rather than its surface appearance. He holds a Bachelor of Art Education from the City Art Institute (now UNSW Art & Design) and a Master of Fine Arts from UNSW. Sharp has exhibited widely in Australia and internationally.Join us as Michele Cawthorn and Peter Sharp share insights from their transformative experience at the Albers Foundation. Apply for the residency here. Thanks, Peter and Michele, for speaking with us, it was a fascinating insight into your time at the Albers Foundation, and we're really looking forward to seeing the work that emerges from the experience.

In the defense industrial base, everyone knows the primes dominate the big programs, but that leaves a huge gap in the middle.  Startups don't scale, the primes can't move fast, and decades of consolidation have hollowed out the space in between. For years, everyone has recognized this gap, but no one has really solved it. The primes are getting bigger, the small innovators get attention but struggle to scale, and the middle tier keeps shrinking.  Meanwhile, the need for companies that can deliver speed, value, and scale has only grown more urgent. That's starting to change. A new class of “next-gen primes” is emerging, companies that can think like small disruptors but deliver like established contractors. They're leaner, faster, and built for the kind of problems the bigs won't touch. One of the leaders of this movement is John Albers, retired Marine Colonel and now CEO of Albers Aerospace. After diving into entrepreneurship, he became a voracious student of business and started building what he calls a next-gen prime.  In less than a decade, he's grown Albers Aerospace into a nine-site operation by combining organic growth, acquisitions, and a relentless focus on lean execution and leadership development. In this episode, John shares how Albers Aerospace is reshaping the defense industrial base, what it really takes to scale in this space, and why leadership culture, not technology alone, drives speed and impact.   You'll also learn: How Albers Aerospace scaled from a one-man shop to 9 sites through a mix of organic growth and acquisitions Why humility and getting your “rear end kicked” is often the most important leadership lesson How over-consolidation at the top has created a roll-up opportunity for mid-tier defense companies Why financial literacy and leadership training are as important as operations in a fast-growing business Why speed, lean execution, and value, not allowable costs, win contracts in today's environment How John thinks about building impact for the warfighter and the industrial base, not just chasing dollars   Guest Bio John Albers is the founder and CEO of Albers Aerospace, a Dallas-area defense and aerospace company organized into three business units. Since its founding in 2015, Albers Aerospace has grown rapidly through acquisitions and organic expansion, delivering innovative products and services to today's warfighter. A retired U.S. Marine Corps Colonel with 24 years of active duty, John served as a fleet pilot, flight instructor, and developmental test pilot. As an entrepreneur and senior executive, John brings more than 35 years of leadership and operational experience across defense acquisition and private industry. What does it take to shift from a struggling solo attorney to a CEO leading a thriving full-service law firm? Learn how authentic leadership transformed one law firm from solo practice to thriving law firm. In this episode of Great Practice, Great Life®, Steve sits down with Ross Albers, CEO of Albers & Associates in Timonium, Maryland. Ross shares his inspiring and raw journey—from getting fired just days before his wedding to building a successful law firm with 13 attorneys spanning multiple practice areas. His story is a powerful reminder that setbacks can become the foundation for future success with the right mindset and strategy. Ross opens up about his early days practicing criminal law and accepting low-fee cases. Instead of staying stuck in survival mode, he adopted a new perspective—one rooted in long-term business growth. That shift led him to evolve from lawyer to leader, transforming his role and his firm in the process. We examine the fundamentals of leadership and team development within the context of a law firm. Ross shares how creating clarity and accountability among team members has been crucial in fostering a high-performing environment. He emphasizes the power of structured feedback and regular communication, drawing inspiration from leadership heavyweights like John Maxwell. With insights on the importance of KPIs and well-defined onboarding processes, Ross illustrates how these elements contribute to cohesive and efficient firm operations. His personal experiences underscore the importance of aligning processes across various practice areas to achieve both cultural and financial success.  Ross also shares what it takes to scale a law firm without sacrificing your personal life. He speaks candidly about building trust, leading by example, and staying committed to continuous growth. Whether you're managing a solo practice or leading a growing firm, Ross's journey offers a roadmap for evolving from overwhelmed attorney to purpose-driven CEO. Tune in for actionable strategies to build a firm that reflects your values, supports your life, and fuels your biggest dreams. In this episode, you will hear: Ross Albers' journey from being fired to leading a successful law firm Importance of authentic leadership in scaling a law practice and developing high-performing teams Creating a culture of clarity and accountability with regular feedback and clear KPIs Weekly performance reviews as a tool for maintaining team progress and addressing underperformance Structured training and onboarding to enhance firm efficiency and cohesion Leadership development through continuous learning and embracing thought leadership principles Encouragement to dream big, take action, and persist in achieving professional and personal success Follow and Review: We'd love for you to follow us if you haven't yet.
