Welcome to November 12, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate the tale of two kitchens and the kitchen sink of pizzas. Two Los Angeles restaurants take the credit for inventing the French Dip sandwich, Coles and Philippes. Both feature thinly sliced beef on crusty French bread that is slathered with spicy mustard and dipped in au jus sauce. Coles claims that its French Dip appeared in 1908, when chef Jack Garlinghouse softened the bread of his sandwich for a customer with sore gums. Chef Philippe Mathieu claims he accidentally dropped the bread in a pan with meat drippings and the policeman who ordered it said he would take the sandwich anyway. The next day he returned with his friends and the sandwich became a hit. To this day the French Dipped Sandwich is the star of both menus. On National French Dip Day, celebrate with your own mouth watering version of this American classic. Sharks, halibut and yellowtail fish are not like us, but not for the obvious reason. These creatures actually like anchovies. In fact, anchovies are an important part of the diet for most fish. But putting them on a pizza, well, that's a different thing altogether. Anchovies are not eaten fresh. Rather, they are salted in brine before they are consumed, by some people anyway. According to surveys, anchovies are the least popular pizza topping, even more disliked than broccoli or pineapple. On National Pizza With the Works Except Anchovies Day, add this topping if you feel like swimming upstream. Otherwise, there are plenty of fish in the sea who enjoy celebrating the opposite. It was non-stop food talk on today's show – after all, we're celebrating National French Dip Day, National Chicken Soup for the Soul Day and National Pizza with the Works Except Anchovies Day (sorry, anchovies lovers). Bo and the producers shared their thoughts about holiday side dishes, French dips, pickles, pizza and more. Things got cooking when Ashley from Store 1400 in Athens, Georgia, called in to become our Associate of the Day. Bo recognized several associates during Milestone Minute: Donald from Store 285 in Huntsville, Texas, celebrated 35 years with the company, while Karen at Club 8203 in Marietta, Georgia, and William at Club 8136 in Washington Township, Ohio, both reached their 30-year anniversaries with the company. Bo's Impossible Question of the Day asked: What is something that 63% of people say happens to them every day? We know this answer will be a surprise for everyone. Tune in and find out what it is!
Welcome to November 12, 2021 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate the kitchen sink of pizzas and a good old American throw down. Sharks, halibut, yellowtail. They're not like us. But not for the obvious reason. These creatures actually like anchovies. In fact, anchovies are an important part of the diet for most fish. But putting them on a pizza…well, that's a different thing altogether. Anchovies are not eaten fresh. Rather, they're salted in brine and then eaten. By some people anyway. According to surveys, anchovies are the least popular pizza topping—even more disliked than broccoli or pineapple. It's National Pizza With the Works Except Anchovies Day, so when you order pizza, chances are good that the pizzeria won't even have the option of adding these salty little fish. And thank goodness. How do you guys weigh in on anchovies? The French Dip sandwich is not actually French but its origins represent a good old American throw down. Two Los Angeles restaurants take the credit for inventing the sandwich, Coles and Philippe's. Both feature thinly sliced beef on crusty French bread that is slathered with spicy mustard and dipped in au jus sauce. And that's where the stories become different. Coles claims that its French Dip appeared in 1908, when a sympathetic chef gave his customer with sore gums a side of meat juice to soften the bread of his sandwich. The much more palatable story comes from Philippe's, where the sandwich was accidentally dropped in a pan with meat drippings. The lucky customer raved of its intense flavor, and a new favorite was born. On National French Dip Day, celebrate with your own mouth watering version of this American classic. Did You Know That NASCAR Is Related To Bootlegging? Welcome to May 21st, 2021 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate fast cars and two ingredients for a perfect party. During Prohibition, it became very popular in Southern states to illegally distill the alcohol known as moonshine. Federal agents would chase down vehicles during transport and destroy the barrels, so bootleggers began to soup up the engines on their cars. With these faster cars, they could outrun the Feds. Once Prohibition ended, those really fast cars were going to waste, so people began to race the vehicles and that evolved into what we know today as…NASCAR. Each year on the third Friday of May, we celebrate NASCAR Day. So get comfortable on the couch, crack open a cold one and get ready for the races. It's exactly what the sport's creators would've wanted. Everyone knows that a good party starts with two things, great food and great friends. If you know where to pick up the perfect pizza, then you're halfway to one of the best ways to celebrate. And if your friends are impressed by trivia here's a few pizza facts to throw into the mix. Some people give credit to the ancient Greeks for making the very first pizza, which was more like a flatbread covered in oil and spices. Others think pizza has gotta have cheese, which the Romans added along with honey and bay leaves. But almost everyone agrees that the cheese of choice is mozzarella. Today, more than 2 billion pounds of pizza cheese are produced every year in the United States alone! On National Pizza Party Day, do your part by ordering extra, and watch your guests celebrate even more. Today: National American Red Cross Founder's Day, National Waitstaff Day I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day.
