Avoiding certain foods that trigger GI symptoms is a common way to manage a variety of conditions like IBS, IBD, and EoE. Obese patients and those with fatty liver disease who need to follow a specific regimen like the Mediterranean Diet also need to avoid certain foods. Yes, eliminating foods is challenging for all patients. But trying to stay true to cultural or religious beliefs while following a gut-friendly diet can be even harder. We've invited back one of our favorite registered dietitians, Neha Shah, who understands how important food is to culture, religion and social gatherings. With first-hand experience as a vegetarian and GI nutrition expert, Neha explains the ways patients can work with their providers on adapting gut-friendly diets that are aligned with their cultural or religious beliefs. Obesity is more complicated than just overeating. Multiple factors contribute to the condition, making it a complex problem to solve. It's a chronic disease that requires long-term, structured management. Unfortunately, obesity is often underdiagnosed and undertreated. It's understandable, given the societal stigma of obesity, to feel offended if your doctor raises the issue of weight. But your doctor isn't trying to shame you—obesity is a legitimate health concern that can lead to serious problems like diabetes. It's a sensitive topic. But if you need to lose weight and aren't sure how to do it or have tried everything you can think of without success, involve your physician. Doctors understand the science behind weight loss and can be valuable partners in finding a solution that works for you. In Episode 60, Dr. G and his guests Neha Shah, MD, and Ryan Headley, MD, discuss obesity treatment options and answer frequently asked questions about weight loss. Guests Neha Shah, MD – Triple board-certified obesity medicine specialist, lifestyle medicine specialist and internal medicine physician; Endeavor Weight Loss Management, Edward-Elmhurst Health. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic disease where fat accumulates in the liver, and can progress to inflammation (non-alcoholic steatohepatitis or NASH), and hardening of the liver (cirrhosis). Guests:Sally Armour is the Child Health Commissioner for NHS Highland, working with the Highland Health & Social Care partnership, children and young peoples integrated service partnerships and regional planning groups in Scotland. This involves having oversight of population and wellbeing and influencing the service design and delivery of health and other services to support children and young people to achieve the best outcomes across the life course and into adulthood.Dr Neha Shah is the Public Mental Health Research and Evidence Lead at Public Health England and holds an academic post at City University. She is a qualified doctor with specialists registration in public health medicine and is a practising psychodynamic therapist. She has an interest in better understanding and addressing the factors impacting on population mental health and enhancing the quality, relevance and impact of mental health research for those that use it. Laura Fischer is an artist, activist, lecturer, consultant and researcher. Her work weaves creative approaches with scientific methods and focuses on trauma, often with an activist agenda. She believes that trauma survivors are not powerless, broken individuals and are rather the survivors that have power and the resources to lead their own healing and growth, and contribute to the healing and growth of our communities. A key aspect of Laura's work is to develop novel interventions to respond to violence, abuse and neglect. Her main focus is the neurobiology of childhood trauma and the use of body-based methods to express and process traumatic memories to support healing and growth. In this episode, the group discusses what psychological trauma is and how it relates to mental health. Dr Neha Shah talks about how childhood trauma can have an increased likelihood of poor mental and physical health outcomes later in life as well as the difference between types of traumas, in particular the difference between PTSD and Complex Trauma. She also discusses what trauma-informed approaches look like in non-healthcare settings. Sally Armour, from a public mental health point of view, talks about 'toxic stress', the distinction between adversity and when adversity becomes trauma and fundamental survival strategies. She touches on the importance of validating the difficulty people have in finding their innate path to recovery and discusses why some adversity and tolerable levels of stress in life are important in shaping us, but need not define us. Laura talks about research she has been involved in since the first lockdown on the impact of social distancing, particularly for young people in abusive environments. A key finding is that we really need everyone to be able to firstly recognise and then respond to trauma. There is a need to make the experience of trauma and the language associated with it understandable to the public. She raises the simple, but impactful idea that being trauma-informed is just being human-informed, looking at a person, their experiences and their perceptions - looking at the human behind the outcome. As a key takeaway, the reality is that trauma is extremely prevalent so don't dismiss it and don't turn a blind eye. Learn to recognise and respond to trauma. Hello and welcome back to The Undeniable Level Up podcast. Last week we discussed the importance of Obeying the Law…of Attraction. We covered the Seven (7) laws that make up the Law of Attraction, as well as the Seven (7) actions that you have to take to activate the Law of Attraction. If you missed that podcast, you might want to pause now and go give that one a listen as you'll need to understand the law of attraction if you're planning on manifesting your dreams. By the way, how many of you have found that purple donut? So today, we are going to discuss how to manifest your dreams. We'll define "manifestation" and discuss the Seven (7) steps to manifesting your dreams. Q: So what is manifesting or manifestation? Read Quote: Angelina Lombardo, author of 'A Spiritual Entrepreneur', told OprahMag.com that, "…manifesting is making everything you want to feel and experience a reality…via your thoughts, actions, beliefs, and emotions." The very first step in manifesting your dreams is letting go of past resistance and future worries. You have to begin focusing on the NOW and being present in the moment. You cannot manifest your dreams if you are harboring anger, sadness or regret from your past. Focusing on those negative thoughts only breed them in your current situation. What you think about, you create. Additionally, you can't live with a lack mindset or a worrisome mindset about the future. If your thoughts are focused on not having enough, or losing what you have, you will manifest that reality. Focus on the NOW and become present. Q: Have you ever found a past or future worry keeping you from achieving your dreams? How did you overcome it? How do you become grounded in the NOW? The next thing you need is the ability to find clarity in your dreams. How can you manifest your dreams if you can't mentally envision, see or speak about your dream in details. It's not enough to say, "I want to be rich," or "I want a great job". Being rich or having a great job is different for everyone. Be specific in your dream. I want $15M in my account by the time I'm 45 years old. Or I want a job as a Director of Operations for Amazon. Once you have the goal in mind, then create clarity around getting to that goal. I am going to make $15M by starting my own company that sells seashells by the seashore, or I'm going to get that Director's job by completing my MBA and starting as an Area Manager at Amazon and working my way up. Until you have clarity, your dreams remain in the wish realm and guess what, Fairy God Mothers, Leprechauns and Genies don't exist. Wishes don't come true. Q: Have you ever manifested a dream that you had? Have you ever had a dream that you weren't able to manifest? Why didn't you manifest it? What are you manifesting now?The next thing you need to bring your dream into reality is confidence. Believing in your ability to achieve your dream is critical to actually achieving it. And that means recognizing your limiting beliefs. If you haven't had the opportunity to identify your limiting beliefs yet, then I invite you to tune into Episode 5 of the Undeniable Level Up podcast where we talk specifically about destroying limiting beliefs. And this is important in eliminating self doubt and negative self-talk. This alone, can keep you from achieving anything you set for yourself. Q: Has lack of confidence ever stopped you from achieving a goal or realizing a dream?Next is for you to expect your dream to come true. Expecting it, means you believe it. If you don't expect to see those zeros and commas in your bank account, you will begin to doubt your dream, you'll begin to doubt yourself. You'll begin looking for a Plan B, and a Plan C and D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O P. Q: Has doubt ever kept you from manifesting a dream? Now it's time to plan. Planning is one of the critical steps for manifestation to take place. Not having a plan keeps your dream in a dream-state.
