Active and athletic women can be hit hard by the menopause transition. Many of us have become accustomed to our bodies responding in a predictable way to our training and nutrition, only to have that sense of control slip away during the menopause transition. That can leave us feeling desperate for solutions–and vulnerable to predatory marketing. That's where mindset, especially acceptance, becomes an essential tool in our midlife toolbox. While there are steps we can take to feel and perform our best at every age and stage of life, there will always be some changes outside of our control. Accepting that isn't “giving up”, it's freeing yourself to stop battling your body and to truly appreciate all it does for you. This week we talk all about movement and mindset during midlife and menopause with fitness expert Maria Luque, PhD, menopause coach with Respin Health.Dr. Maria Luque is an energetic and accomplished fitness and menopause expert, former health science professor, and USAF veteran. With a PhD and MS in Health Sciences and over two decades of fitness experience, she combines academic expertise with practical insights. Managing testicular cancer demands resilience that men often don't realize they possess. Michael J. Rovito, Ph.D., an associate professor at the University of Central Florida, adds another factor to resilience: connectedness. He shares some insights from his investigatory project on connectedness or disconnection, which could be defined, he says, as "no one really knows me." This feeling of social isolation becomes even more palpable for young men navigating testicular cancer. Dr. Rovito talks about the challenges young people face, often without the realization they are disconnected from people and social interactions. A familiar voice on the Don't Give Up on Testicular Cancer podcast, Dr. Rovito, has shared his research outcomes and interests before with our listeners. He specializes in testicular cancer self-examination and testicular cancer in general, male health, behavioral change, and informative research that includes theory, instrument development, and intervention design. Key Takeaways Popular diets and images from social media promote the idea that you need to be perfect to achieve your nutrition and lifestyle goals. Don’t be fooled. Nothing and no one is perfect. Being smart, intelligent, and flexible in your choices is the key. Being flexible in how and what you eat will better help you reach your goals than a strict diet. Depending on your goals, there will be times when you want different macronutrients. However, allowing yourself the flexibility to still eat what brings you joy will lead to long-term sustainability. Many women are given the wrong message when it comes to their bodies. Yo-yo diets and other unhealthy eating habits are the norm yet they leave us feeling terrible in many ways. Diet culture will take its toll on you. Today’s guest strives to reverse this by setting her patients on the right track. About Kate Lyman Kate is a nutrition coach and the owner of Kate Lyman Nutrition. With nearly a decade in the fitness industry, Kate understands how to successfully run a nutrition business. Along with her growing team, she has helped hundreds of people change their bodies and eating habits as she breaks myths about dieting and healthy lifestyles. Kate has a Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, a Master's degree in Public Health, and is a Certified Health Education Specialist. Her priority is supporting her clients, but she also manages a team of other qualified coaches and loves to share nutrition education through social media. The Myths of Perfectionism With many women getting caught up in the pursuit of perfection with their diets and their bodies, Kate has some solid advice. First off, no single diet will lead to perfection. In fact, relying on one will only lead to disappointment and negativity as they are nearly impossible to maintain over the long-run. Coupled with images of “perfect bodies” on social media, it’s no wonder so many women feel inadequate. The truth is, perfection is not the route to your goal. Being Flexible to Meet Your Goals Rather than relying on any single solution, Kate urges us to practice what she calls flexible nutrition. By tracking your macronutrients to ensure that you're eating right to meet your specific goals, you’ll be able to create the diet that’s right for you. You’ll still be able to eat many of the foods you enjoy, which is an important part of maintaining long-term sustainability. The goals you set are also an important part of long-term health and nutrition. Kate recommends shifting your focus from big lofty goals to more boring-sounding ones. If your goal is simply to feel good and have energy, then you will lay the foundation needed to reach a big goal later on. Has the pursuit of perfectionism led you astray? But we can also have flexibility in our approach and our strategy in how we handle our nutrition.”[14:30] “It’s really important to set yourself up in a way where your goals are actually realistic to you and your lifestyle because when there’s no alignment between the two, we’re going to get frustrated.” [30:48] Review Fed and Fearless on Apple Podcasts! Address Trauma. Strengthen Resilience. Facilitators and participants in Getting Ahead initiatives share a common language. However, the steady rise in sources of unaddressed trauma in childhood—from parental substance abuse and domestic violence to systemic barriers experienced by marginalized groups and the heightened inequities of a global pandemic—creates a new urgency and imperative. We must integrate trauma science and trauma-informed language into our Getting Ahead curricula to help participants heal from trauma and build resilience, both personally and in their communities. Getting Ahead ACEs and PACEs Supplement: Addressing Trauma Through Building Trust and Resilience affirms the conclusions of international public health experts: Unaddressed trauma is a public health crisis, and peer support groups are fundamental to healing individuals and communities. ACEs stands for adverse childhood experiences, referring to traumatic events that occur before age 18. Together with Getting Ahead and Bridges champions, local and state ACEs coalitions are building a leadership pipeline to bring trauma-informed voices to the table. With their transformational fuel, communities co-create tools and strategies that support healing and resilience for all. This supplement makes the case for rising to this urgent challenge and lays the ground- work for Getting Ahead facilitators to: • Recognize and share the ever-growing body of trauma science • Incorporate trauma-informed language and practices into Getting Ahead • Help build trust, resilience, and positive social connections among participants • Identify resources, assets, and policies that support trauma awareness and response Adrienne B. Elder holds a Master of Public Health degree with specific training as a Certified Health Education Specialist, a national Bridges Out of Poverty trainer, and a certified Getting Ahead program facilitator. She serves on the National Trauma Campaign Core Team and in the ACEs Connection Speakers & Trainers Bureau to help community coalitions become trauma-informed. Philip E. DeVol is an international consultant, coauthor of Bridges Out of Poverty, and author of Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin'-By World, among many other publications. Bridges and Getting Ahead initiatives are in use in hundreds of U.S. communities and many others around the world.

Have you thought about hosting your own virtual summit? We've talked quite a bit for the past few months about the power of hosting webinars, which are typically just you talking to your audience (perhaps with a co-host). Virtual summits, on the other hand, typically bring together a group of speakers on a topic, with you as the host pre-recording the interviews with each speaker and then delivering them all on a particular day for registrants to watch. Hosting your own virtual summit can boost your visibility and brand, build relationships with people in your industry, grow your email list, and bring in revenue. (Virtual summits is one of the 5 types of webinars we talked about on our most recent webinar. You can watch the webinar recording at https://www.crowdcast.io/e/syb-5-types-of-webinars.) My guest in this episode, Dr. Holly Tucker, decided to experiment and put together a virtual summit just a couple of weeks ago - and she did it all in less than 30 days. Holly enjoyed it so much that she’s doing one again! Holly and I talk about: Why she decided to do a virtual summit The business goals she had for the summit How she selected her speakers The logistics of putting it all together Lessons she learned for the next time About My Guest: Dr. Holly A. Tucker is a health & wellness speaker, advocating for the health of the next generation. Her background as a chiropractic physician certified in acupuncture, and a Certified Health Education Specialist, she incorporates intentional daily nutrition into practice. More importantly, she is a mom on a journey in raising her own children. Dr. Tucker has a private practice in Memphis, TN, and also maintains Active Family Wellness, a lifestyle blog centered on whole food nutrition for the whole family. How to Have the Talk (0:00:00)When you think about telling your kids what the phrase “the birds and the bees”, really means does it make you nervous? For many of us, the idea of having a conversation about sexuality with our young children can seem awkward and discomforting. But talking about sex with our young kids shouldn't be something we dread: in fact, these talks can turn into some of the most beneficial conversations we'll have with them as they grow up. Joining us on the show today is Kim Cook, a Certified Health Education Specialist and a former elementary school nurse. We invited her to discuss with us how to have positive talks with our children about their sexuality. Are 5 Meals Better Than 3? (0:17:10)For a while now, the fix for any stomach issue seemed to be switching from a diet of having breakfast, lunch, and dinner, to having five small meals a day. I feel like I saw articles cropping up everywhere about how this is the new secret to weight loss, bloating control, and happy tummies. But making five meals a day is a huge effort! I want to know if it's actually all that it's cracked up to be! With us today to answer this question is Malia Frey, a weight management specialist and fitness nutrition specialist. Emergency Preparedness (0:34:12)When it comes to emergency preparedness, some of you may have taken the “out of sight, out of mind” approach, but with all the pandemic going on in the world, you may be feeling like you weren't really equipped to handle something like this in your home. You are not alone (as is evident in the hour-long lines at all the Costcos around the world). We want to help ease your mind and help you better prepare, so we have with us Gabe Turner, the director of content for Security Baron, to help us arm ourselves for natural disasters. Keeping Pets Happy (0:50:34)While quarantine is going on due to COVID-19, I'm sure many of us are starting to feel a little bit of that cabin fever. But the real question is: how are our pets doing? As pet owners, we want to make sure that our pets are healthy and happy but trying to stay inside as much as possible might make this more difficult. So, what can we do take care of our pets during quarantine? Here to share some tips with us is Johnna Deveraux, clinical pet nutritionist. Taking the Road Less Travelled – In a Bus (1:03:21)For a lot of us, taking a drive in the car has been our only escape from home the past couple of weeks. For Shelby Vertes and David Schmidt, their home is their refurbished bus, which they take all over the country to capture and share the beauty of North America. We thought that we all could use a little escape today, so we invited them on the show to tell us a little bit about their adventures. Weekend Review (1:22:50)Lisa and Richie talk about what there is to do this weekend while we're all stuck at home, including movies released early and new shows streaming.
We all learned about the birds and the bees at some point – at school, on YouTube, from our friends, or *cringe* from THAT TALK with our parents. But maybe talking sex with your parents or kids doesn’t have to be that weird? In this episode, Debbie chats with Kim Cook, sex educator, nurse, and author of Teen World Confidential, about how parents (and their kids) can normalize conversations about sex, relationships, masturbation, identity, and more! National Sex Education day is on February 2. Take up the challenge and spend 10 minutes talking to your kids about sex. About Kim Kim Cook, the author of Teen World Confidential: Five Minute Topics to Open Conversation about Sex and Relationships, is a Certified Health Education Specialist and a former elementary school nurse. As an educator, she supports parents to have healthy and productive conversations about sex and relationships with their kids. Understanding that parents often need support to get the conversations started, she has initiated the National Sex Education Day campaign, which encourages parents to spend just ten minutes engaging in age-appropriate conversations with their children on February 2nd. This is a fun and educational conversation. However, if you don't want to talk about sex with your kids just yet, then you might want to pop your headphones on! In American culture, sleep and rest in general can be treated in very contradicting ways. On the one hand, expressing a sense of tiredness and a need for rest has become a cultural norm. While on the other, it has become a cynical type of status symbol to be so busy that having time for rest must mean someone isn't working hard enough. But between both of the cultural attitudes lies one similar problem -- sleep deprivation. This episode explores the basics on sleep in culture especially for those within the 18-24 year-old age range. Getting the best sleep is important for the best quality of life according to Shawna Haislet a Certified Health Education Specialist and Health Promotion Coordinator at the University of Northern Iowa. She discusses best practices for sleep, dispels common misconceptions and challenges the prevailing attitudes people have about sleep. Read more about her tips about sleep here: https://bit.ly/2vGYXeu We're Here Now is a podcast of the Here Now and Forevers blog.
“Dispelling Myths about Smoking, Mental Health/Substance Use Disorders and Recovery” was presented on February 19, 2019; by Rosemary Bak Lowery, MS, CHES®, CNP, ACSM-CPT; Certified Health Education Specialist. Adults with mental illness, including substance use disorder (SUD,) are at risk of dying 25 years earlier than the general population. The major contributor to this premature mortality is smoking-related disease. While cigarette smoking has trended downward in recent years, it is still highly prevalent in adults with mental health and/or substance use disorder (MH/SUD). Why is this so? Recent research has suggested that the biggest issue lies with the many common myths and misperceptions about the relationship between smoking, MH/SUD and recovery. This program will shed light on popularly-cited “facts” about smoking, reinforced by both consumers and care professionals alike. Viewers will gain a deeper understanding of the extent of this public health problem and understand how they can be a part of the solution. People struggling to quit, or afraid to try because of a fear of adverse consequences, may gain hope as they learn about the true relationship between smoking and MH/SUD. The fact of the matter is: People with MH/SUD can quit smoking, and when they do, they experience improved mental health and greater success in SUD recovery. This program is part of the Dawn Farm Education Series, a FREE, annual education series developed to provide accurate, helpful, hopeful, practical, current information about substance use disorders, recovery, family and related issues. The Education Series is organized by Dawn Farm, a non-profit community of programs providing a continuum of substance use disorder treatment and recovery support services. Gospel Scripture: (all NIV) Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” Romans 3:24 “and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” Romans 3:25 (a) “God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood.” Hebrews 9:22 (b) “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:11 “Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.” John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Romans 10:9 “That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Luke 15:10 says “In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” Romans 8:1 “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” Ephesians 1:13–14 “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession- to the praise of his glory.” Ephesians 1:15–23 “For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” Ephesians 2:8–10 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God‘s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.“ Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.“ Philippians 1:6 “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

A move backward in readiness to change should not be perceived as a failure on the client's part but rather as an opportunity to readjust behavior goals, observes Kate Larsen, president of Winning LifeStyles, Inc., an ICF-certified professional coach and a WellCoaches(R) faculty member and mentor coach. There's value in reminding clients that health coaching is a journey and in checking coaching egos at the door to improve listening skills and allow clients to own their behavior change goals, notes the author of "Progress, Not Perfection." Larsen and Claudine Reilly, wellness manager at CVS Caremark, a Certified Intrinsic Coach, and a Certified Health Education Specialist, provided different scenarios that coaches might encounter with patients and examples of how coaches can and should respond to assist clients in achieving the health behavior change they need during the July 15, 2009 webinar, Finding Success in Health Behavior Change, a 45-Minute Interactive Roundtable.
