Today most of us don't know the name Marion Harris, but Grandma probably did when she was a teen-ager listening to that new-fangled radio in the parlor.Songs that summed up the transition from the stodgy, gaudy Gilded Age to the brave new world of The Jazz Age were often the recordings of Marion Harris. Her tunes like “Jazz Baby” and “They Go Wild, Simply Wild, Over Me,” “A Good Man is Hard to Find” and “Take Me to the Land of Jazz” were a soundtrack of the changing times. Her most enduring legacy? It was a 22-year-old Marion Harris who introduced the world to “After You've Gone,” 1919's bestselling American tune, written by the African-American vaudeville duo of Turner Layton and Henry Creamer. The pair wrote the song to bring some life to a failing road show called “So Long, Letty.” The road show continued to fail, but the song hooked audiences, taking off with a life of its own. Their HitsOne of the most frequently recorded pre-1920s jazz standards, “After You've Gone” appeared on the Top 20 charts on at least nine different occasions between 1919 and 1937. Highlighting them all were the 1927 recordings by Sophie Tucker and by Bessie Smith. And Layton and Creamer weren't finished. Three years later, they penned another beloved early-jazz standard, “Way Down Yonder in New Orleans,” which they advertised as "A Southern Song, without A Mammy, A Mule, Or A Moon." (What a dandy dig at some of the Tin Pan Alley clichés of the era!) One of that song's earliest recordings was 1927's signature rendition by Bix Beiderbecke and Frank Trumbauer. The Turner Layton OdysseyTurner Layton worked as a singer and dancer in vaudeville using original material. A Washington D.C. native, he received musical training from his father, a bass singer, music educator and hymn composer. The young man attended Howard University Dental School, then moved to New York, where he met Henry Creamer, with whom he wrote several Broadway musicals, the most successful being something called “Strut Miss Lizzie” in 1922.That same year, Layton left his partnership with Creamer to form a high-rolling cabaret act with Clarence “Tandy” Johnstone, performing in Harlem and at private parties for monied patrons like the Astor and Vanderbilt families. The pair followed their ritzy clientele from Newport in the summer to Palm Beach in the winter. It was in Florida in 1924 that the two met Lord and Lady Mountbatton, who persuaded them to move to England, where Edward, Prince of Wales, became one of their fans. Layton and Johnstone sold more than 10 million records between 1924 and 1935. Layton stayed in England until his death in 1978.Meanwhile, Marion….Marion Harris also moved to England, and the Prince of Wales became one of her fans too, especially enjoying her sets at the Café de Paris. But tragedy loomed. During World War II, the home she shared with her third husband was destroyed in 1944 by a German V1 rocket, a disaster that triggered in her a neurological disorder. Later that year while in New York to seek treatment, Harris died in a hotel room fire. She had fallen asleep while holding a lit cigarette. She was 48.Meanwhile, the song that linked their lives lives on. It became so popular, in fact, that years after its composition, the sheet music for “After You've Gone” was decorated with tiny photographs of the 45 performers who made the song famous, everyone from Paul Whiteman and Rudy Valle to Guy Lombardo and Louis Armstrong. Our Take on the TuneThis is a tune that our Flood brother Danny Cox brought to the mix. In fact, with a chuckle, he said, “I can't believe y'all weren't already doing this one.” True enough. “After You've Gone” was one that got away … until recently, when Danny corralled it and brought it to the table. We learned this tune from the late Floodster Emeritus Bill Hoke, who — like many other people — said he first heard it at a folk festival some time in the early 1990s.It has been about 25 years ago now. Bill stopped off to visit at the Bowen House while on a trek from his Abingdon, Va., home to Dayton, Ohio, to see his dad. We can still picture him there in The Flood band room, picking up Charlie Bowen's guitar and strumming a chord or two.“You guys ought to do this song,” he said softly, and started singing:I have seen rain on a cloudless day,I have see snows that fell in May ….We were hooked before he even got to the chorus. “No Ash Will Burn” has been in The Flood's repertoire ever since.EmpathyThat memory came rushing back to us last week when our friend David Click mentioned on Facebook how much he has enjoyed the band's performance of that song over the years. In a later message to Charlie, David added that while the song is sad, he found a kind of commiseration in the lyrics, an empathy that touched him especially in times of loss and grief. We understand; the song moves us that way too. For instance, the performance featured in this week's podcast comes from back in mid-November of last year. It was the first rehearsal we had in the days after we learned of the death of our old buddy and band mate Doug Chaffin.Doug absolutely loved this song ever since we included it on our 2011 Wade in the Water album. In this track you might hear how we felt a little closer to our dear companion as we sang it in his memory on that cold November night.About the SongWhen Bill Hoke taught us the song a quarter of a century ago, we didn't even know who wrote it. It was the mid-1990s and the World Wide Web wasn't yet the thing it is today, so we couldn't so easily find out such basic facts as writing credits.Only later did we learn that “No Ash Will Burn” is the work of Muscle Shoals singer/songwriter Walt Aldridge, an Alabaman whose songs over the past 60 years have been recorded by a diverse group of artists, from Lou Reed to Reba McEntire. Inducted into both the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, Aldridge has written chart-busting hits for Ronnie Milsap ("No Gettin' Over Me," 1981), Earl Thomas Conley ("Holding Her and Loving You," 1982), Travis Tritt ("Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde," 2000), and Heartland ("I Loved Her First," 2006).In the late 1980s, Aldridge also sang lead vocals in the band The Shooters, a country band which charted with seven singles for Epic Records. It was during this creative period that he penned “No Ash Will Burn.”The song was first recorded on Western Dream, the 1989 debut album of Ranch Romance, a Seattle-based western swing, alternative country and bluegrass band.Versions of the tune quickly began circulating in folk music circles after Alice Gerrard recorded it in 1994 and Molly O'Brien released it four years later.A particular favorite of ours is the 2009 rendition by our friend Sallie Sublette and her Idaho-based band, Wild Coyotes, on their Coyote Tracks album. Our Take on the TuneLike a long-time running buddy, “No Ash Will Burn” has been with us for so long that it has generated its own store of Flood lore. One of the best “No Ash” stories comes from about 10 years ago at one of our stranger gigs.It was late May 2013 — about a week before Memorial Day — and after days in the 70s and 80s, the temperature suddenly plunged as we drove north to Fairmont, WV, for the Friday night concert. It was down to the 50s when we took the stage at the amphitheater at Prickett's Fort State Park, and by the time the show was finished 90 minutes later, the mercury had dropped to 45. The cold, along with a brisk west wind, made for a fairly frigid Flood, but it also produced some laughs. As we were shivering on stage and Charlie sang the opening lines -- I have seen rain on a cloudless day / I have seen snows that fell in May -- Dave Peyton leaned over and groaned, "Damn straight!" We cracked up and so did the audience. In this cut, you can hear us rehearsing the song a few days before the big Fairmont Freeze.More Folk Music? Finally, if you'd like more tunes from The Flood's folkier files, check out the Folk playlist on our free Radio Floodango music streaming service. Challenges no matter what big or small, significant or insignificant affects us all. But what challenges are you personally facing? Each day we face discouragement, problems from all sides from which we cannot hide, change, fear and failure are but amongst the few. However the challenges we face reminds us we are human and helps us face our weaknesses. Right now that Challenge could be a sore point, something you wish to avoid and who knows time might not be on your side however seek advice from a trusted friend. Seek God. And though at times you feel like throwing in the towel, give up, but then a word, a song, or advice from a trusted friend comes in. Ask Knock and Receive for at times others see another view of what God can do. So before you feel like quitting and giving up thank God for the challenges that draws your attention to things that needs great Spiritual effort which therefore tests your and my ability. Do you. Be you and Be Comfortable with You. So as I felt challenged this week, I thank God for His lead. When things look like there's no way out, in pops a song - and might I add one of my late dads favourite songs, 'I Trust In God I Know He Cares For Me On Mountain Bleak of on the Stormy Sea, though Billows roll, He keeps My Soul. My Heavenly Father watches Over Me. So on that Promised Note, don't Despair fof God Does take Care. Be Blessed. Be Encouraged by this word.

“Tales From The Terramar” The San Diego born C. Gibbs sounds like the surf. But not the sunny part--the deep, dark part. The part that twists through fathoms and moves with a silent, but potent current under the waves. The singer-songwriter's music is a dreamy blend of California darkness and coastal soul. With a delivery that falls somewhere between Nick Cave and Simon Aldred of Cherry Ghost, Gibbs is a mesmerizing talent. His CV has quietly gotten pretty crammed, playing with both Foetus and Modern English, fronting his own band the Morning Glories and forming the chamber rock outfit Lucinda Black Bear. Since the late 90s he's put out close to 15 solo albums, all of them fantastic. From 29 Over Me to Sleep The Machines to He Arrived By Helicopter: The Shiny Hostel, Gibbs' work is always compelling and marvelous. His new album falls perfectly into that category. Tales From The Terramar is one of 2021's very best. A stirring collection that showcases Gibbs' gifts as a songwriter, Tales From The Terramar is about the ocean, about going home, and it's about the juxtaposition between the industrial and the natural world. Gibbs sings with precision and finesse and his compositions are the perfect example of how subtlety can be absolutely riveting. In this chat, Gibbs and Alex talk about his foray into the major label world, carving out time to be creative and what it was like to return to San Diego with a young family. Sydney DJ, Space Junk (http://www.soundcloud.com/spacejunkdj), is one of the most vibrant and passionate deep house DJs kicking around the scene. Along with his Mantra Collective crew, he's been responsible for some of the biggest parties over the past 6 months or so since the launch of this newly formed promoter-group.
