The beers are back for another episode, and this time they're joined by a bottle of Josh Cellars - a wine brand that has been making a name for itself across the "interwebs". To start this week's episode, the beers pay homage to Kobe Bryant and his Oscar-winning short film 'Dear Basketball. Next, the beers rattle off this year's Oscar nominees and share their picks on who they want to win, and who they think will ultimately walk home with the win for each category at this year's 96th Academy Awards. Dr. Klapper opens his show with today's theme of storytelling. He is looking at people who were able to be successful in 2 different careers because of their storytelling skills. Kobe Bryant is the example in sports because he not only won championships but he won an Oscar for his animated short film "Dear Basketball". Trisha Yearwood is the example in music because she is successful in country music and in the culinary world. The Local Yoke is a restaurant in Manhattan Beach known for its jalapeño hash. Be radically humble. Identify those people who have the right situational knowledge or experience or who sit in a position that you want to be in. To do that, you have to be one thing: radically humble. Realize that most people love to give. Most people freely give their advice to those that value it. Most people love to share their experience, their situational knowledge. Even their relationship capital— most people love to give to those they emotionally connect with. The reason they love to give is ego based. It's really not a humble thing at all. They feel separate or superior when they're giving, and in a scarce world, they feel better about themselves when they give. You can always identify humble people because not only can they give unconditionally (without expectation or trading) but they can also ask for help. When it comes to humility, I like to talk about how the practice of humility opens your world to new skills and knowledge, key components for people who strive for great-ness in their decision making. Take Kobe Bryant, for example. Most know him as one of the best scorers in NBA history, a champion by any definition of the word. But Bryant did not let his previous successes cloud his judgment when starting the media portion of his career. He was humble enough to call upon others who had different skill sets and a different knowledge base, and that's why his early forays into media, such as his Oscar Award–winning short film Dear Basketball, have been such a hit with audiences. In an interview with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, Bryant shared the simple, humble way that he was able to attach such respected names as composer John Williams and animator Glen Keane to his project: he asked. As Bryant told the audience, when it comes to learning any skill or gaining knowledge when you are unsure, “the best way to learn is to reach out and ask.”1 Even one of sports' all-time greats understands that the practice of humility will help leaders avoid the traps that their egos are apt to send them into. Brinton and Humberto "H.Billi" Ona discuss what they enjoyed and took from Kobe Bryant's book. "The Mamba Mentality: How I play." he Mamba Mentality: How I Play is Kobe Bryant's personal perspective of his life and career on the basketball court and his exceptional, insightful style of playing the game―a fitting legacy from the late Los Angeles Laker superstar. In the wake of his retirement from professional basketball, Kobe “The Black Mamba” Bryant decided to share his vast knowledge and understanding of the game to take readers on an unprecedented journey to the core of the legendary “Mamba mentality.” Citing an obligation and an opportunity to teach young players, hardcore fans, and devoted students of the game how to play it “the right way,” The Mamba Mentality takes us inside the mind of one of the most intelligent, analytical, and creative basketball players ever. In his own words, Bryant reveals his famously detailed approach and the steps he took to prepare mentally and physically to not just succeed at the game but to excel. Readers will learn how Bryant studied an opponent, how he channeled his passion for the game, how he played through injuries. They'll also get fascinating granular detail as he breaks down specific plays and match-ups from throughout his career. Bryant's detailed accounts are paired with stunning photographs by the Hall of Fame photographer Andrew D. Bernstein. Bernstein, long the Lakers and NBA official photographer, captured Bryant's very first NBA photo in 1996 and his last in 2016―and hundreds of thousands in between, the record of a unique, twenty-year relationship between one athlete and one photographer. The combination of Bryant's narrative and Bernstein's photos make The Mamba Mentality an unprecedented look behind the curtain at the career of one of the world's most celebrated and fascinating athletes. About the Author Kobe Bryant (1978-2020) was one of the most accomplished and celebrated athletes of all time. Over the course of his twenty-year career―all played with the Los Angeles Lakers―he won five NBA championships, two Olympic gold medals, eighteen All-Star selections, and four All-Star Game MVP awards, among many other achievements before retiring in 2016. In 2018, Bryant won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film as writer of Dear Basketball, which he also narrated. He was the first African American to win the award as well as the first former professional athlete to be nominated and win an Oscar in any category. As a philanthropist, Bryant founded the Kobe & Vanessa Bryant Family Foundation (KVBFF) and the Kobe Bryant China Fund, organizations dedicated to providing resources for educational, social, and sports programs to improve the lives of children and families in need, and encourage cultural exchanges between Chinese and U. S. middle school children. He was also an official ambassador for After-School All-Stars (ASAS), a nonprofit organization that offers after-school programs to low-income children in more than a dozen U. S. cities. With entrepreneur Jeff Stibel, Bryant co-founded Bryant Stibel, a company designed to offer businesses specializing in technology, media, and data strategies, capital, and operational support. Throughout his post-professional basketball career, Bryant claimed he'd never been beaten one-on-one. In this episode of the Roald Dahl Retrospective, Patricia, Arun, and special guest Eli "TheHeroofTomorrow" Stone discuss about the 2016 BBC two-part animated TV movie Revolting Rhymes based on the 1982 book of the same name starring Dominic West, Rob Brydon, Tamsin Greig, Rose Leslie, Gemma Chan, Bertie Carvel, David Wailliams, Isaac Hempsey Wright, and Bel Powley. The story adapts from Roald Dahl's interpretations of Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, The Three Little Pigs, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Cinderella. The plot focuses on a wolf wanting to get revenge on Little Red Riding Hood as she killed his nephews by eating her two young children. Revolting Rhymes was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short, but lost to Dear Basketball written and narrated by the late Los Angeles Lakers basketball player Kobe Bryant and animated by legendary Disney animator Glen Keane. It received mixed to positive reviews from critics calling it a short, charming film that captured the essence of Roald Dahl's stories, but not as memorable as the other animated adaptations. What do Patricia, Arun, and Eli think of the film? Listen and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/old-school-lane/support

French Horn player extraordinaire talks his life and career as studio musician in Hollywood and his many collaborations with John Williams, including his work as Principal Horn on The Post and the recent Star Wars sequels The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, sharing his views on the Maestro's music Los Angeles native French Horn player Dylan Skye Hart is part of the younger generation of studio musician who are carrying over the great tradition of the "Hollywood sound" in film scores established by legendary horn players such as Vince DeRosa and Jim Thatcher, of whom Dylan can really be considered a natural heir. Dylan had the distinguished honour of performing as Principal Horn for John Williams on a few of his more recent scores, including The Post (2017) and the Star Wars sequels The Last Jedi (2017) and The Rise of Skywalker (2019), following in the footsteps of those above mentioned musicians. Since 2008, Dylan Hart has played for many top Hollywood composers including Alan Silvestri, Hans Zimmer, James Newton Howard, Bruce Broughton, John Powell and Alexandre Desplat. Dylan is also a devoted classical musician—he's currently Principal Horn for the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Santa Barbara Symphony, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Pacific Symphony, and the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. Dylan is also a member of the Los Angeles Horn Quartet and Modern Brass Quintet. In this conversation, Dylan talks about his life and career as French Horn player in Los Angeles, from his humble beginnings to his years studying with Vince DeRosa and Jim Thatcher. He recalls his first gigs in major film scores and his work performing for John Williams in such scores as War Horse, The Post, Dear Basketball and the Star Wars films, offering his own unique insight about Williams' process in the studio and his writing for the instrument. Dylan also reflects on the great tradition of Hollywood's horn playing style as mastered by his teachers DeRosa and Thatcher and what it means carrying that legacy. It's been a weird year for everything, and movies are no exception. But nonetheless, Oscars season is starting to percolate, and here to break it down is Scott Feinberg, who covers the awards for The Hollywood Reporter, and hosts the fantastic THR Awards Chatter pod (which can be https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/awards-chatter/id1039032256 (found here), and wherever else you get your finest audio). We start, though, on Kobe Bryant, who Scott had a chance spend time with as Kobe went through the process of making, getting nominated and ultimately winning an Oscar for "Dear Basketball." What made his journey in Hollywood unique? How about LeBron James? Clearly concerns about his commitment to hoops vs. commitment to Hollywood have been eliminated, but that doesn't mean he's not interested in the Hollywood stuff. And it's going pretty well, too. From there, it's on to news about this year's Oscars ceremony. What is it going to look like? What movies are making headway, and how might the way in which they're distributed this year impact future Oscar seasons? Was there any consideration to cancelling, given how many release dates have been pushed back? Finally, what does the week's news about Warner Brothers and HBO Max mean for the future of the industry? What else is coming? Is the theater-going experience, at least as it was before the pandemic, officially dead?

Confira!
Brandon and I talk NBA Hiatus, Last Dance Documentary, and the Future of NoLimitJumper. We discuss the importance of how much the NBA means to fans world wide, and how the game has changed over the years
This week on the show Sonny and Gabe review the movies Dear Basketball, Rocky I & Rocky II. Listen to their thoughts on Kobe Bryant's short film and the classic boxing movies starring Sylvester Stallone.
Just like many people around the world, I was in shock when I heard the news that Kobe Bryant was killed in a helicopter accident... As the details continued to come in, the story just got more heartbreaking. Soon after, I got a text from a buddy by the name of John Lukin, who I played baseball with at UCLA: “The other father, wife, and daughter in the Kobe crash was my baseball coach at Orange Coast College, John Altobelli. I'm shocked bro. He's why I stayed in baseball after UCLA. He's why I ended up at Rice. He's why I met my wife, Missy. Say a prayer for his family bud. And hug yours.” As the world mourns the loss of a generational superstar that made a positive impact on so many lives, there were 8 other people lost on that helicopter that seemed to be filled with so much life, promise, and inspiration... Memento Mori is a stoic philosophy phrase that is no stranger to the Daily Hustle that basically means we all will die... The stoics were said to meditate on this NOT to be dark and morbid, but rather quite the opposite... The simple recognition of our own impermanence was what the stoics used as a reminder for all of us to LIVE OUR LIVES. If there was anybody in the world that seemed immortal, Kobe was it... A 41-year-old, 20 year NBA superstar just entering the 2nd half of his life that already included an Oscar for the film he created called “Dear Basketball.” He was as driven by an athlete and person that we have seen in our generation and his ability to articulate the reasons for his success basically distinguished him as one of the premier motivational speakers we have ever seen in our lifetime. Kobe was the father of four girls and by all accounts, he was just as good of a Dad as he was a basketball player. There is no underlying message here from this tragedy and no real way to spin it in any sort of positive direction... 9 people with so much life to give gone way too soon and it just plain f*ing sucks... Just about all of us have dealt with the unimaginable in our lives and as soul-crushing as these things can be, we have no choice but to move on and let it be a reminder that the arrow of death spares nobody. A couple of years ago I ran across a print at the DailyStoic.Com that is a recreation of an anonymous 1635 German engraving that has a skeleton smiling and aiming a crossbow directly at whoever would be looking at the picture… In French, the inscription reads… “Ma flesche (asseure toy) n'espargnera personne Vous danserez trestout ce balet, que je sonnne.” Translation: “My arrow (I promise you) spares no one, You will all dance the ballet of which I sing” Kowalski's sick ass loved it so much he even made us a couple of t shirts with the image and quote… As the Daily Stoic points out, the print is a representation of Memento Mori in its rawest and most pure form and brings to mind the famous quote in Gladiator that was apparently wrongfully attributed to Marcus Aurelius... But does it really matter who said it? Truth like the below quote is so evident and so powerful that it clearly speaks for itself... “Death smiles at every man, and all a man can do is smile back.” Lets just keep smiling, EB
This is an homage to the late great Kobe Bryant, inspired by his Oscar winning animated short, Dear Basketball. Despite not knowing Kobe personally, his influence left a lasting impact on my life as he did for millions of people around the world. Kobe truly embodied what it meant to be blessed for success. May him, his daughter Gigi, and the 7 others who perished in the crash rest in peace.
So that's it? What? We some kind of Bird of Prey? Today we talk about the job grind, Kobe Bryant, Dear Basketball, Twitter decay, Facebook Jail, Instagram Jail, what should win the Oscars 2020, the blandness of Wonder Woman, the UFC fight, Fire Pro Wrestling, Indivisble, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), Super Bowl 2020, the commercials, and whatever happened at the Half Time Show. As I mourn along with the world the tragic loss of Kobe Bryant, this is my catharsis, my way of saying good bye to an Icon. I wrote this poem for me and then I decided to share it on this platform, hoping it helps someone
The Oscars are here, already. After the shortest awards season in decades, the 92nd annual Academy Awards will get underway Sunday evening at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The red carpet is being rolled out two to three weeks earlier than usual in a bid to freshen up a ceremony and potentially boost ratings. The truncated time table has put the normally bloated Oscars season on a diet (Sunday's show will also, for the second straight year, be hostless) and sent film academy members scrambling to finish their movie-watching — no small task in a year featuring a few three-hour epics like "The Irishman" and "Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood."Fittingly for a fast race, a movie about a mad dash has risen to the top of the heap. After winning nearly every major precursor award, Sam Mendes' "1917," about a pair of British soldiers sent with an urgent message to deliver through recently-held enemy territory, is the favourite for best picture. Thanks to its technical dazzle, the seemingly one-continuous-shot "1917" is also likely to come away with the most awards Sunday, even without any acting nominations.Although Joaquin Phoenix, Renée Zellweger, Brad Pitt and Laura Dern all appear to be all-but-certain locks in the acting categories, there's still the potential for a history-making upset. Momentum has swung behind Bong Joon Ho's South Korean thriller "Parasite," and some believe it has a chance to become the first non-English language film to win best picture.Such a win would be a watershed moment for the Academy Awards, which has long been content to relegate international films to their own category. But in an effort to diversify its largely white and male membership, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has inducted more overseas members in recent years. And just about no one has a bad word to say about the widely praised class satire "Parasite," the Palme d'Or winner at last year's Cannes Film Festival and the first foreign language film to win top honours from the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The official pre-show will begin at 6:30 p.m. EST on ABC. Among the presenters the academy will lean on in the absence of a host are Tom Hanks, Maya Rudolph, Spike Lee, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Chris Rock, Timothée Chalamet, Will Ferrell, Diane Keaton and Kelly Marie Tran. The ceremony will come just days after the death of Kirk Douglas, one of the last surviving stars of Hollywood's golden age. Kobe Bryant, a 2018 Oscar winner for the short "Dear Basketball," is expected to be included in the ceremony's In Memoriam segment.ABC and the academy will be hoping a widely watched field of nominees — including the $1 billion-grossing "Joker," up for a leading 11 awards — will help viewership. Last year's show garnered 29.6 million viewers, a 12% uptick. This year's Oscars comes amid a streaming overhaul throughout Hollywood. Hurrying to catch up to Netflix and Amazon, most of the major studios are prepping or have already launched their own streaming services, as have new entrants like Apple. Netflix comes into the Oscars with a leading 24 nominations thanks to "The Irishman," "Marriage Story," "The Two Popes" and the likely best documentary winner, "American Factory."But despite spending heavily through awards season, Netflix may go home with only a few awards. The streamer is still seeking its first best picture win after Alfonso Cuaron's "Roma" came up just shy last year.Instead, this year's Oscar favourites are largely movies released widely in theatres. They also predominantly feature male characters and come from male directors. After a year in which women made significant gains behind the camera, no female directors were nominated for best director. The acting categories are also the least diverse since the fallout of #OscarsSoWhite pushed the academy to remake its membership. Cynthia Erivo ("Harriet") is the only actor of colour nominated. Those results, which have been a topic in speeches through awards seas...
Only on the "CBS This Morning" podcast, former NFL player turned filmmaker Matthew A. Cherry joins national correspondent Jericka Duncan to discuss his Oscar-nominated animated short film, "Hair Love," which tells the story of a black father doing his daughter's hair for the first time. Cherry discusses why it's important to normalize natural hair and expand representation in Hollywood. Plus, he shares what it was like to pivot to a new career after playing football and what it means to follow in the footsteps of Kobe Bryant, who was the first professional athlete to be nominated for an Oscar for the 2018 animated short "Dear Basketball."See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Season 1 episode 4 Jayybone and Jimbo return to kick off Black history month in February, unfortunately last week after the pod we had learned of the passing of Kobe Bryant and 8 other people that were involved in helicopter crash. Being the basketball fans we are we had to include him in todays pod may he and the eight others involved in the crash Rest In Peace. Jimbo returns as our newly appointed sports analyst to talk our memories with Kobe on the Lakers being Celtic fans,Super Bowl 54, and a cryptic Tom Brady instagram posts which launches the TB12 watch what will he do or where will he go?. This being a pop culture pod we find it appropriate to honor the commercials and the Dear Basketball short that was made after his retirement speech, the short film is also narrated by Kobe. We then talk about our other influential movie director and producer Jordan Peele. Peele known for his comedic sense of humor bust out of the comedy scene after giving us Key and Peele on Comedy Central and gets into the horror movie scene like no other. What I find amazing about the horror movies Peele has done is that all of them have great underlying themes in the tone and lots of symbolism pertaining to African American culture. Being a huge horror movie fan as I am its only appropriate that we discuss both of these amazingly different horror films and can't wait for more to come. Another prank lies in this podcast so listen closely and if you listen to the podcast you will have a chance at the digital download code for the movie Lighthouse given out by Jimbo. We give our best to Jimmy G and the guys in the Super Bowl and end it off with a RIP KOBE. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jpbc369/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jpbc369/support

Will Julia enter next year's Winter Carnival jigsaw puzzle competition? Lori very much liked watching Kobe Bryant's Oscar-winning short, "Dear Basketball". These Super Bowl "prop bets" are really crazy. Super Bowl commercials. Winona's is not very good, Jimmy Fallon's is funny, and we love the Hyundai Boston accent one. Heroes come and go, but legends are forever. R.I.P.第123期 Dear Basketball(科比一路走来的简短音频:NBA选秀,三连冠,81分,最有价值球员,第五冠,宣布退役)就如同你刚才听到的,科比表示自己将在这个赛季之后退役,结束长达20年的职业生涯。 Dear Basketball, 亲爱的篮球,From the moment 从小时候I started rolling my dad's tube socks 我穿着老爸的直筒袜And shooting imaginary 假装着Game-winning shots 我在大西部论坛球馆In the Great Western Forum I knew one thing was real: 我就清楚知道一件事情:I fell in love with you. A love so deep I gave you my all — 我爱你如此之深,已奉献我的所有—From my mind & body 从我的思想到我的身体To my spirit & soul. 从我的精神到我的灵魂As a six-year-old boy 六岁的我Deeply in love with you 深深的爱着你I never saw the end of the tunnel. 我从没想过这段旅程结束时的样子I only saw myself 我只看到我自己Running out of one.在这条路上奔跑And so I ran. I ran up and down every court After every loose ball for you. You asked for my hustle I gave you my heart Because it came with so much more. I played through the sweat and hurt Not because challenge called me 不是因为困难在挑战我But because YOU called me. I did everything for YOU 我已经为你做了一切Because that's what you do 因为你也是这样对待我When someone makes you feel as 因为你让我感觉Alive as you've made me feel. You gave a six-year-old boy his Laker dream And I'll always love you for it. But I can't love you obsessively for much longer. This season is all I have left to give. My heart can take the pounding My mind can handle the grind But my body knows it's time to say goodbye. I'm ready to let you go. I want you to know now 我现在只是想让你知道So we both can savor every moment we have left together. The good and the bad. We have given each other 我们已经给了彼此All that we have. And we both know, no matter what I do next I'll always be that kid With the rolled up socks Garbage can in the corner 瞄准角落里的垃圾桶:05 seconds on the clock 假装进攻时间还有5秒Ball in my hands. As I read this touching letter, my childhood memory of basketball suddenly occurred to me. And I want to share with you. When I was just eight years old, my uncle drove me to the basketball court and asked me to make a shot. I was too short to shoot. After a whole afternoon's shooting, I did make few good shots under my uncle's guidance. I felt so happy about every improvement I made. I guess it was that moment I fell in love with basketball, simply because of the joy and fun basketball brought to me.So I started playing. At that time, there was a basketball court in the backyard, dozens of meters away from my home. That court was very shabby and the basket was much higher than a standard one. Every time I shot, it seemed like falling down. What's worse, the ground was uneven and dusty. Despite of the shabby surroundings, what I remember more is about the moment I spent with basketball, how I learnt to dribble with both of my hands, how I corrected my posture of shooting, how I imitated Kobe's fadeaway, Allen's crossover, T-Mac's jump shot, and how I called up my friends to play together. Even though so many years passed by, my heart is still filled with warmth and satisfaction when I recall that shabby basketball court. Now I am a sophomore student, and I have been playing basketball for more than ten years. Life is changeable, but the thing that does not and will not change is I am still playing basketball. Playing basketball is not my career, but I think what more important is as I play basketball, all pressures and unhappy moments disappear, laughter and relaxation are there with me. When I feel gloomy and confused, I will play basketball. A scene will occur to me, an eight-year-old kid standing in the shabby court and trying his best to play basketball well. I guess that kid is my inner self and that kid will guide me to be a better self in the future. Now, that shabby basketball court was fixed. It's standard. A few kids play basketball there every afternoon. They dribble, shoot, practice and laugh. I hope basketball will enlighten them as well.I was born in June 1996. Two days after my birthday, Kobe was selected in the NBA draft and his NBA basketball career took off. Now I am 20. After 20 years' ups and downs, Kobe wrote this letter to announce the date of his retirement. His 20-year-NBA career is about to end. Thank you, Kobe. Thank you for giving us so many wonderful and touching memories in the past 20 years. Best wishes to you. When we first met当我们初见时,作者:Kobe Bryant,翻译:永清When we first met当我们初见时,I was just a kid. Some of you took me in, some of you didn't. But all of you helped me become the player and man in front of you today,但是,是你们所有人让我变成了一名真正的球员,和今天站在你们面前的这个男人。You gave me the confidence to put my anger to good use,你们赋予我自信,让我化悲愤为动力,Your doubt gave me determination to prove you wrong,你们的质疑给了我证明你们并不正确的决心,You witnessed my fears morph into strength,你们见证我的恐惧转化成为力量,Your rejection taught me courage,你们的拒绝教给了我勇气,Whether you view me as a hero or a villain,无论你们视我为英雄还是恶棍,Please know I poured every emotion, every bit of passion请知道,我倾注了所有感情,每一丝热情and my entire self into being a Laker,和整个自己,成为一名真正的湖人。What you've done for me is far greater than anything I've done for you. I knew that each minute of each game I wore purple and gold,我知道,每一场比赛的每一分钟,我身披紫金战袍,I honor it as I play today and for the rest of this season. My love for this city, this team and for each of you will never fade. Thank you for this incredible journey.
