Austrian film director
POPULARITY
Austrian filmmaker Jessica Hausner has one of the most immediately recognizable signatures as an auteur. Her films are known as much for their formal austerity as for their daring subject matter; they are films that – to use her phrase – “do not shout so loudly”. Those are also the kinds of films that Hausner, as Jury President at the 77ᵗʰ Locarno Film Festival, did not want to overlook in favor of louder, splashier titles. When she met her fellow jurors for the first time, Hausner stressed that it was important to consider films whose emotional power develops inside the viewer more slowly, accruing over time. We sat down with Hausner for a conversation on Locarno Meets to delve into her process in making films, her taste in cinema, the more than 30 takes it often takes to get a scene right, and her philosophy as president of a festival jury.
In a bumper episode, the penultimate one of the year, Dario interviews Jessica Hausner about her new film Club Zero and Guy Maddin, Evan, and Galen Johnson about Rumours. Both films have limited UK releases this week (Friday, December 6th), and, interestingly, though they are very different films, they have thematic connections, particularly in relation to contemporary crises, social critique, and satirical modes. Club Zero stars a very well-cast Mia Wasikowska as Ms. Novak, a girlish teacher whose radical ideas about diet lead a group of students down a dangerous path. Dario's conversation with Jessica and composer Marcus Binder explores influence, seduction, and the complexities of societal expectations through the lens of her film. They discuss the dangers of eating disorders, the pressures of social responsibility placed on children, the alienating dynamics of the school environment, and how misinformation can so easily be spread. Rumours boasts a stacked cast led by Cate Blanchett, who represents the leaders of the G7. Dario talked to director-writer team Guy Maddin, Galen Johnson, and Evan Johnson about the film at the London Film Festival. The conversation navigates the complexities of creative expression in film, touching on themes of self-perception, audience expectations, character development, and the balance between artistic freedom and commercial viability. They discuss the challenges of navigating genre conventions, the significance of casting choices, and the implications of stereotypes in representing national identities. Neil and Dario then reflect on both the interviews and films, examining their artistic choices, character development, and how well the themes capture contemporary anxieties around authority, ideology, and ambivalence. They also discuss the aesthetics of symbolism and the emotional distance created through cinematography, as well as the broader implications of anxiety and manipulation in youth culture. This leads to a reflection on how artists address the current socio-political moment, how crisis is influencing many film works in an implicit way, and whether a political cinema is possible while maintaining a unique voice in an uncertain, changing cultural landscape. After “All We Imagine As Light” triumphed at Cannes this year, taking home the Grand Prix, Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia headed to the Locarno Film Festival to serve on the main competition jury alongside the likes of director Jessica Hausner and star Luca Marinelli. While she was in town, we invited her to join us for a chat on LocarnoMeets. Kapadia took us through her journey from “A Night of Knowing Nothing”, her non-fiction masterpiece that won the Best Documentary Prize at Cannes in 2021, through to her new film, which marks a decisive turn to fiction. For Kapadia, the very act of making cinema is a political one, springing from the urgent dynamics of real life in a complex social, political, and class system like India's.

Novo filme de Jessica Hausner, o clássico de Emir Kusturica reexibido, as estreias de "A Ilha Vernwelha", "Completamente passado" e Cão e Gato"
März in unsere Kinos kommt. This week on Cannesversations, Eliana and Patrick discuss Valeska Grisebach's self-described "dance with the Western genre," the 2017 Cannes Un Certain Regard film Western. Considered by some to be part of the second generation of the Berlin School and by others to be one of the distinct voices of the New Austrian Cinema, Grisebach distinguishes herself through her filmmaking approach by favoring a collaborative process with her actors in the conceptualization of scenes.Strangely enough, this does not take away from her directorial signature style, yet rather establishes her as one of the leading filmmakers of world cinema concerned with narrative realism. Western implements documentary-style filmmaking techniques to speak to the subsisting undercurrent themes of colonization and masculinity with contemporary panache and vigilant subtlety.Credit/ Resources:Marco Abel.

Plants in horror have been few and far between. There has been THE LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS (1960), THE RUINS (2008), while many others included alien invasions such as INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1956) and THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD (1951). Now genetics and the changing of the DNA of plants has entered the horror world with the British film LITTLE JOE (2020). Scientist Alice Woodard (Emily Beecham) works for a commercial genetics company that works in making plants better for garden and home. Her groups new idea is the plant called Little Joe (named after her son). Red and beautiful, the plant has been genetically changed to let out a beautiful smell that should make its owner feel more relaxed and happy. Yet Bella (Kelly Fox), a competing scientist, feels something isn't right with the Little Joes and begins to believe people are being negatively influenced by the plant. Austrian director Jessica Hausner works with longtime collaborator, French screenwriter Géraldine Bajard, on a film that received praise at Cannes Film Festival. The film has received generally good reviews even if some felt it was a slow burn. Dark Discussions takes a look at this interesting picture and gives their thoughts.

Sam Clements talks to Emily Beecham about her role in the new film by director Jessica Hausner, Little Joe. Little Joe follows Alice (Emily Beecham), a single mother and dedicated senior plant breeder at a corporation engaged in developing new species. She has engineered a special crimson flower, remarkable not only for its beauty but also for its therapeutic value: if kept at the ideal temperature, fed properly and spoken to regularly, this plant makes its owner happy. Against company policy, Alice takes one home as a gift for her teenage son, Joe. They christen it ‘Little Joe’. But as their plant grows, so too does Alice’s suspicion that her new creation may not be as harmless as its nickname suggests.
Greed is (kinda) good on this week’s Truth & Movies, as Michael Leader, Simran Hans and Matt Thrift sail away with Michael Winterbottom and Steve Coogan for their super-rich satire – just watch out for those false teeth! Also in cinemas is Jessica Hausner’s Little Joe, starring Emily Beecham as a botanist whose latest scientific breakthrough comes with a curious side effect. Continuing the nefarious flora theme in Film Club, we revisit Fran Oz’s 1986 horror-comedy Little Shop of Horrors. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Also starring Ben Whishaw it is a scifi take on the dangers of genetic engineering in flowers. It's the first film in English for Austrian director Jessica Hausner and she reveals what inspired it and the themes that recur in her films. Continuing our series on how to get a movie made, Pitch to Production, Matthew Sweet explores the tricky business of assigning rights with Clare Israel of film and literary agents David Higham Associates and development consultant Rowan Woods. Another winner at Cannes in 2019 was the French film Portrait of a Lady on Fire which took Queer Palm and Best Screenplay prizes for its writer and director Céline Sciamma. Set in eighteenth century France it is the story of the developing attraction between a female portrait painter and the young woman sitting for her. Its stars Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel who talk about the difference between being the observed and the observer in art and the fun they had shooting sex scenes. Hi everyone! It’s Friday, so we’re back with another Fantastic Fest review from Andrew Campbell. Today’s review I thought wasn’t going to make it, and I was getting really frustrated with him, but then someone sent me this awesome houseplant and now it’s fine, and I’m fine, and everything’s fine. You know what else is fine? Andrew’s previous reviews, which include THE POOL (Episode #656), critical darling DOLEMITE IS MY NAME (Episode #649), and ensemble film extraordinaire KNIVES OUT (Episode #652). I wonder who sent this flower? Oh! I guess you’ll want to check out our review for ANNA AND THE APOCALYPSE (Episode #425) for... no reason. Before the review, we’ll have a promo from the DC High podcast. Every episode, D & C provide a heaping dose of edutainment as they work their way through a high-school themed curse. You can find them on Twitter and Facebook @DCHighpod. Don’t miss their Reign of Terror 2019 guest review for HATCHET (Episode #613). Subscribe to stay current with the latest releases. Contribute at Patreon for exclusive content. Connect with us over social media to continue the conversation. Here we go! ///// > ///// Hello film fans! Stephanie here. Andrew seems to have caught a touch of the plague this week and his voice sounds like he spent the whole day screaming. The review itself is all his, but you’ll be hearing my voice instead of his raw scratchy one. Anyway, today’s movie is about a nefarious plant and if I was going to watch a movie about plant life, it would be something more like LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS or the real horror of 2018’s ANNIHILATION (Episode #400), both of which are streaming now on Amazon Prime. Today’s movie is LITTLE JOE, the 2019 film from Magnolia Pictures, written by Jessica Hausner and Geraldine Bajard, and directed by Hausner. LITTLE JOE played the 2019 Fantastic Fest as a “sneak preview” - whatever that means. The first English language film from Austrian director Hausner, LITTLE JOE stars Emily Beecham as Alice a single mother caring for her son Joe (Kit Connor) while preoccupied with her genetically engineered plant species called Little Joe. As a senior scientist at a research company, Alice has developed a flower that, when cared for and spoken to, emits a red cloud of particulates containing oxytocin, essentially providing a source of artificial happiness. Frequently forced to work late monitoring her plants, Alice is often absent from her teen son’s life with late night take-out dinners becoming the norm. She makes an uncharacteristically poor decision to smuggle a single bloom home as a gift for her son, but before long young Joe’s personality begins to change. The trailer for this film looks gorgeous, providing a setting for a great story. A stark, glass-walled laboratory staffed by a crew of meticulous workers tending to a grid of single-stem houseplants featuring a crimson puffball on the end. Alice’s bright-red bob of hair and the dark fluorescent grow-lights being the only other signs of color. The sterile, antiseptic lab clashes with the ominous soundtrack pulsating throughout. The film itself delivers in this regard, every scene well-shot with some creative camera angles and long pans. The story is a slow burn, just as the trailer indicates, however it grows a bit thin with remarkably few twists or payoffs along the way. The conclusion is predictable and pedestrian, however the film does have an interesting subtext regarding antidepressants. Fortunately for folks like me who don’t always pick up on these things, the characters eventually have an overt conversation on the subject. With pharmaceuticals (or in this case, a potentially malicious chemical-emitting houseplant) that serve to artificially alter one’s personality to create happiness, at what point does the person become someone else altogether? One thing that drew me to this film is the fact that Emily Beecham picked up the award for Best Actress at Cannes for LITTLE JOE. This seemed unlikely for a genre film such as this, however, Cannes has a recent history of recognizing actresses in horror and sci-fi films, including Charlotte Gainsbourg for ANTICHRIST and Kirsten Dunst for MELANCHOLIA, both stemming from the deranged mind of Lars von Trier. Unfortunately, I found Beecham’s performance to be rather pedestrian, along with most of the cast, which also includes actor Ben Whishaw as Chris, a co-worker at the lab and potential love interest for Alice. The film works to build suspense as Alice sees subtle signs that her son and co-workers are behaving differently, possibly resulting from Little Joe’s spores. But “subtle” is the key word here, the film sacrificing any real excitement for the restraint of being a light psychological thriller. The obvious comparison here is to INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, either the 1956 film or the more well-known 1978 remake starring Donald Sutherland. There the plants are extraterrestrial rather than bio-engineered, but as they slowly begin to supplant people both mentally and physically, you get some genuine terror that has aged surprisingly well. LITTLE JOE starts with the same note, but all the fun parts are missing. What makes LITTLE JOE fantastic? The Little Joe plant was scientifically engineered to be infertile, ostensibly to give the company control over the plant’s production once it becomes a commercially viable product. However, as we know from a certain dinosaur, you cannot control nature’s intrinsic need to reproduce. In other words... This is basically the low-stakes flora version of JURASSIC PARK and it deserves a few points for that. LITTLE JOE is a slow-paced sci-fi thriller that rewards patient viewers with a meditative moral tale. Fans of lab-based thrillers such as GATTACA, CONTAGION, or Jeff Goldblum in THE FLY may enjoy this film. Rotten Tomatoes: 69% Metacritic: 58 One Movie Punch: 6.2/10 LITTLE JOE (2019) is not rated and opens today in limited release. Come back next Wednesday when Andrew will be returning with MARRIAGE STORY, starring Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver. The latest from Noah Baumbach is a gut-wrenching story of love and divorce featuring two actors at the top of their game. You can expect Oscar nominations and possibly a few wins from this one. It’s been drawing rave reviews in a limited theatrical run and hits Netflix on Friday. Will you be ready to go by then, Andrew? Oh, you’re sounding better already!
This is a truly fascinating and unique episode of Switchblade Sisters. The phenomenal Austrian director Jessica Hausner joins April to talk about M. Night Shyamalan’s The Visit. But unlike any previous episode of Switchblade Sisters, Jessica had never seen The Visit and had to turn it off halfway through because she was too frightened! Nonetheless, this is a deeply insightful conversation that covers her personal philosophy of precise filmmaking, working with child actors, and her new sci-fi film starring Emily Beecham and Ben Whishaw called Little Joe, which won Best Actress for Beecham at the Cannes Film Festival and was in competition for the Palme d’Or. Little Joe is in theaters and streaming on December 6. And if you haven’t seen The Visit…you should! With April Wolfe and Jessica Hausner. Emily Beecham won the best actress award at this year's Cannes Film Festival for her brilliantly nuanced and tightly focused performance in Jessica Hausner's art house science fiction film “Little Joe.” Recently she played The Widow in the AMC series “Into The Badlands,” starred in “Daphne,” and had a memorable supporting role in “Hail Caesar.” In this episode she talks about the importance of connection, avoiding “attractive acting,” Mike Leigh, the strenuousness of intense physical performance, her “Little Joe” hair, and much more!
