Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes Last Wednesday morning, Marvel Television treated fans to the long awaited first official teaser trailer for Daredevil: Born Again. The trailer was met with universal praise for its dark tone and brutal depictions of violence, elements that it shares with the beloved Netflix series. The nine-episode first season premieres March 4 on Disney Plus. In some Captain America news, it was confirmed that Brave New World will have a total runtime of one hour and 58 minutes, which ties it with Ant-Man & The Wasp as the seventh shortest MCU flick to date. It will also be the first Captain America film under two hours long. It's brand new news today, Ryan Gosling is in negotiations to star in Shawn Levy's future Star Wars film. Levy's film has been in development with Lucasfilm since 2022, and getting Gosling seems like it could be a major step in getting the film truly off the ground and into the galaxy far, far away. Last we knew, the film was not to be set within the Skywalker saga The use of AI has been a frequent hot topic for Hollywood in recent years, reaching a seeming fever pitch during the 2023 WGA and SAG AFTRA strikes as a major point of negotiation. While the dust seemed to have settled a bit with the resolution of those strikes, new controversies plaguing high profile films and filmmakers have brought the discussion back to the forefront. First, Taxi Driver writer and First Reformed director, Paul Schrader, opined, in a since much lambasted Facebook post, the benefits of using a platform like ChatGPT for film ideas, in contrast to waiting the months it can take writers to ideate. Elsewhere, awards season favorite and Oscar hopeful, The Brutalist, has come under fire after an editor revealed generative A.I. was used to enhance the authenticity of the lead performers Hungarian accents. Emily Beecham and David Krumholtz have signed on to Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, portraying the parents of Kara Zor-El. Production on the DC Studios film commenced last week. Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for “Until Dawn,” the live-action adaptation of the popular 2015 PlayStation horror game. The film is currently set to be released on April 25th. After nearly 15 years of shaping Spider-Man's adventures at Marvel Comics, Eisner Award winner Dan Slott is making the move to DC. The acclaimed writer will make his DC debut on Superman Unlimited, a new monthly series featuring art by American Vampire co-creator Rafael Albuquerque. Westworld star Thandiwe Newton and Silo's Steve Zahn have joined Paul Rudd and Jack Black in Columbia's comedy reboot of Anaconda. Nintendo has revealed its Switch 2 console with first look images and a teaser trailer, confirming a 2025 release. Uma Thurman has joined the cast of Dexter series Dexter: Resurrection and will star alongside Michael C. Hall. Filmmaker David Lynch, who created celebrated counterculture classics like Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, and co-created Twin Peaks, has died at 78. A24 and Picturestart are teaming with director Charlie Polinger for a revisionist and darkly comedic take on The Masque of The Red Death, based on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allen Poe. Sydney Sweeney is currently in negotiations to star. After extensive negotiations, IMAX has secured a deal to exclusively screen Greta Gerwig's Netflix adaptation of "Narnia" in theaters worldwide for two weeks, beginning Thanksgiving 2026, before its streaming debut that Christmas. Joel McHale has joined the cast of Scream 7 and will play Mark Evans, the husband to Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott. A24 has released the first trailer for upcoming horror film Opus, which hits theaters on March 14th. The film stars Ayo Edebiri, John Malkovich, Murray Bartlett, Juliette Lewis, and Amber Midthunder.

**To sign up for the Reel Ruminators (Free Trial), visit https://email.seventh-row.com/trial.** In this episode, Alex Heeney discusses the new independent British film The Old Man and the Land, which was just released in the U.K. The film is told almost entirely as a series of voicemails from a farmer's two adult children (played by Rory Kinnear and Emily Beecham).  On screen, we only ever see the farmer (their father) tending to the land, doing his chores and daily activities. We never see the people whose voices we hear. The film raises interesting questions about how the film differs (or not) from a radio play in how it tells the story. What does the disconnect between sound and image in cinema offer for the story? Stay updated on Seventh Row Follow Seventh Row on Twitter and Instagram. Read our articles at seventh-row.com. Thrilling political drama. Collective Imagination. Playing Putin.  Patriots on Broadway is a political thriller written by Peter Morgan, writer of The Crown. You don't need to know much about politics to be wrapped up in this electric drama to understand what's happening in the world and on stage, especially with a little use of collective imagination. Lets dive into a little about what makes Will Keen's (Putin) process and approach to this play, which also happens to be his Broadway debut. Will Keen has just closed the West End transfer of Peter Morgan's Patriots, directed by Rupert Goold, for which he won the Olivier Award for Supporting Actor last year. He most recently wrapped “My Lady Jane” and the second series of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” both for Amazon, as well as indie feature Borderland opposite Felicity Jones and Mark Strong. He is currently on screens in “The Gold” (BBC1/Viacom), “Ridley Road” (BBC), and “The Pursuit of Love” (BBC) opposite Andrew Scott and Emily Beecham. His other TV credits include “His Dark Materials” seasons 1 and 2, “The Crown” seasons one and two, “Genius,” “Picasso,” “Wolf Hall” and “The Musketeers.” Stage credits include Ghosts, Waste (Almeida); Quartermaine's Terms (Wyndham's Theatre); The Arsonists (Royal Court); and Mary Stuart (National Theatre). In 1991, after the fall of the Soviet Union, the new Russia belongs to its oligarchs—and no one is more powerful than billionaire Boris Berezovsky. When an eventual successor to President Boris Yeltsin is needed, Berezovsky turns to the little-known deputy mayor of St. Petersburg, Vladimir Putin. But soon Putin's ruthless rise threatens Berezovsky's reign, setting off a riveting, near-Shakespearean confrontation between the two powerful, fatally flawed men. Tony® and Emmy® Award nominee Michael Stuhlbarg stars as Berezovsky and Will Keen reprises his Olivier Award-winning turn as Putin in PATRIOTS, a shockingly timely history play from Peter Morgan, creator of “The Crown.” Don't miss this strictly limited engagement of Olivier Award winner Rupert Goold's kinetic, exhilarating production, which reveals to us all how Russia's post-Soviet machinations continue to shape our world to this day. Patriots is playing at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre through June 23rd. https://patriotsbroadway.com/ Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Only by raising our voices and making them heard can we get the message out there. When most people think of sustainability, they think of packaging. Packaging is only the tip of the iceberg. We need to ensure that other factors are added, including living wages to employees and waste management. Sometimes the fear of failing can hold us back from our dreams. However, we must balance this fear withe the fear of never trying at all. VALUABLE RESOURCES This episode of the Power of Makeup podcast was brought to you by Timely Business Management Software. Cruella is a 2021 American crime comedy-drama film based on the character Cruella de Vil from Dodie Smith's 1956 novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians and Disney's 1961 animated film adaptation.[6] The film is directed by Craig Gillespie with a screenplay by Dana Fox and Tony McNamara, from a story by Aline Brosh McKenna, Kelly Marcel, and Steve Zissis.[7] It is the third live-action adaptation in the 101 Dalmatians franchise. Emma Stone stars as the title character, with Emma Thompson, Joel Fry, Paul Walter Hauser, Emily Beecham, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, and Mark Strong in supporting roles. Set in the 1970s London punk rock movement as Estella, an aspiring fashion designer, explores the path that will lead her to become a notorious criminal known as Cruella de Vil. Walt Disney Pictures announced the film's development in 2013, with Andrew Gunn as producer. Stone was cast in 2016 and also serves as an executive producer on the film alongside Glenn Close, who previously portrayed Cruella in the previous live-action adaptations, 101 Dalmatians (1996) and 102 Dalmatians (2000). Principal photography took place between August and November 2019 in England. Cruella premiered in Los Angeles on May 18, 2021, the first major red carpet event since the COVID-19 pandemic began, and was released in the United States theatrically and simultaneously available on Disney+ with Premier Access on May 28. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, with praise for Gillespie's direction, the performances (particularly Stone, Thompson, and Hauser), visual style, costume design, and soundtrack, but some criticism for the screenplay. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/popcorn-junkies/message

Sam Clements talks to Emily Beecham about her role in the new film by director Jessica Hausner, Little Joe.  Little Joe follows Alice (Emily Beecham), a single mother and dedicated senior plant breeder at a corporation engaged in developing new species. She has engineered a special crimson flower, remarkable not only for its beauty but also for its therapeutic value: if kept at the ideal temperature, fed properly and spoken to regularly, this plant makes its owner happy. Against company policy, Alice takes one home as a gift for her teenage son, Joe. They christen it ‘Little Joe’. But as their plant grows, so too does Alice’s suspicion that her new creation may not be as harmless as its nickname suggests.

Her performance in Little Joe won Emily Beecham best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival last year. Also starring Ben Whishaw it is a scifi take on the dangers of genetic engineering in flowers. It's the first film in English for Austrian director Jessica Hausner and she reveals what inspired it and the themes that recur in her films. Continuing our series on how to get a movie made, Pitch to Production, Matthew Sweet explores the tricky business of assigning rights with Clare Israel of film and literary agents David Higham Associates and development consultant Rowan Woods. Another winner at Cannes in 2019 was the French film Portrait of a Lady on Fire which took Queer Palm and Best Screenplay prizes for its writer and director Céline Sciamma. Despite not looking a day over 398 episodes, the Empire Podcast has officially turned 400. And we did so with a blowout bumper celebration earlier this week at our spiritual home of Kings Place, London, in front of a sold-out audience. In this episode, you'll hear Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and Ben Travis discuss the week's movie news; review Parasite, Birds Of Prey And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn, and Dolittle; and take some audience questions. But it's not just the Four Giggling Idiots Show, oh no. We invited some super smashing great guests as well — Steve Coogan and Michael Winterbottom popped by to talk about their latest collaboration, Greed; Emily Beecham, winner of Best Actress at last year's Cannes Film Festival, talks Little Joe with Dan Jolin; and Todd Haynes, the director of Carol and now Dark Waters, pops in too. But that's not all — our old podchum, Christopher McQuarrie, shows up right at the end as a very special surprise (for the audience — we've ruined it for you now) to talk the return of Henry Czerny's Kittridge to the Mission: Impossible movies, throwing up in a jet plane, and not breaking Tom Cruise. We had a blast. And we hope you do too. Enjoy.

Hi everyone! It’s Friday, so we’re back with another Fantastic Fest review from Andrew Campbell. You know what else is fine? Andrew’s previous reviews, which include THE POOL (Episode #656), critical darling DOLEMITE IS MY NAME (Episode #649), and ensemble film extraordinaire KNIVES OUT (Episode #652). I wonder who sent this flower? Oh! I guess you’ll want to check out our review for ANNA AND THE APOCALYPSE (Episode #425) for... no reason. Contribute at Patreon for exclusive content. Connect with us over social media to continue the conversation. Here we go! ///// > ///// Hello film fans! Stephanie here. Andrew seems to have caught a touch of the plague this week and his voice sounds like he spent the whole day screaming. The review itself is all his, but you’ll be hearing my voice instead of his raw scratchy one. Anyway, today’s movie is about a nefarious plant and if I was going to watch a movie about plant life, it would be something more like LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS or the real horror of 2018’s ANNIHILATION (Episode #400), both of which are streaming now on Amazon Prime. Today’s movie is LITTLE JOE, the 2019 film from Magnolia Pictures, written by Jessica Hausner and Geraldine Bajard, and directed by Hausner. LITTLE JOE played the 2019 Fantastic Fest as a “sneak preview” - whatever that means. The first English language film from Austrian director Hausner, LITTLE JOE stars Emily Beecham as Alice a single mother caring for her son Joe (Kit Connor) while preoccupied with her genetically engineered plant species called Little Joe. As a senior scientist at a research company, Alice has developed a flower that, when cared for and spoken to, emits a red cloud of particulates containing oxytocin, essentially providing a source of artificial happiness. Frequently forced to work late monitoring her plants, Alice is often absent from her teen son’s life with late night take-out dinners becoming the norm. She makes an uncharacteristically poor decision to smuggle a single bloom home as a gift for her son, but before long young Joe’s personality begins to change. The trailer for this film looks gorgeous, providing a setting for a great story. A stark, glass-walled laboratory staffed by a crew of meticulous workers tending to a grid of single-stem houseplants featuring a crimson puffball on the end. Alice’s bright-red bob of hair and the dark fluorescent grow-lights being the only other signs of color. The sterile, antiseptic lab clashes with the ominous soundtrack pulsating throughout. The film itself delivers in this regard, every scene well-shot with some creative camera angles and long pans. The story is a slow burn, just as the trailer indicates, however it grows a bit thin with remarkably few twists or payoffs along the way. The conclusion is predictable and pedestrian, however the film does have an interesting subtext regarding antidepressants. Fortunately for folks like me who don’t always pick up on these things, the characters eventually have an overt conversation on the subject. With pharmaceuticals (or in this case, a potentially malicious chemical-emitting houseplant) that serve to artificially alter one’s personality to create happiness, at what point does the person become someone else altogether? One thing that drew me to this film is the fact that Emily Beecham picked up the award for Best Actress at Cannes for LITTLE JOE. This seemed unlikely for a genre film such as this, however, Cannes has a recent history of recognizing actresses in horror and sci-fi films, including Charlotte Gainsbourg for ANTICHRIST and Kirsten Dunst for MELANCHOLIA, both stemming from the deranged mind of Lars von Trier. Unfortunately, I found Beecham’s performance to be rather pedestrian, along with most of the cast, which also includes actor Ben Whishaw as Chris, a co-worker at the lab and potential love interest for Alice. The film works to build suspense as Alice sees subtle signs that her son and co-workers are behaving differently, possibly resulting from Little Joe’s spores. But “subtle” is the key word here, the film sacrificing any real excitement for the restraint of being a light psychological thriller. The obvious comparison here is to INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, either the 1956 film or the more well-known 1978 remake starring Donald Sutherland. There the plants are extraterrestrial rather than bio-engineered, but as they slowly begin to supplant people both mentally and physically, you get some genuine terror that has aged surprisingly well. LITTLE JOE starts with the same note, but all the fun parts are missing. What makes LITTLE JOE fantastic? The Little Joe plant was scientifically engineered to be infertile, ostensibly to give the company control over the plant’s production once it becomes a commercially viable product.  However, as we know from a certain dinosaur, you cannot control nature’s intrinsic need to reproduce. In other words... This is basically the low-stakes flora version of JURASSIC PARK and it deserves a few points for that. LITTLE JOE is a slow-paced sci-fi thriller that rewards patient viewers with a meditative moral tale. Fans of lab-based thrillers such as GATTACA, CONTAGION, or Jeff Goldblum in THE FLY may enjoy this film. Rotten Tomatoes: 69% Metacritic: 58 One Movie Punch: 6.2/10 LITTLE JOE (2019) is not rated and opens today in limited release. Come back next Wednesday when Andrew will be returning with MARRIAGE STORY, starring Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver. The latest from Noah Baumbach is a gut-wrenching story of love and divorce featuring two actors at the top of their game. You can expect Oscar nominations and possibly a few wins from this one. It’s been drawing rave reviews in a limited theatrical run and hits Netflix on Friday. Will you be ready to go by then, Andrew? Oh, you’re sounding better already!

Also, Roman Polanski's An Officer and a Soldier (J'accuse) and Costa-Gavras Adults in the Room, and more. The title of the Franco-Algerian film Papicha, which won hearts at Cannes in the Un certain regard section means pretty girl. In this film it applies in the plural, and makes the subject all the more biting. Why hide beauty, when as the poet John Keats wrote, "A thing of beauty, is a joy forever"? Mounia Meddour sets her film in a particular period of acute repression in Algeria in the 1990s. Since then the cries for women's rights have become louder. But progress in most quarters is patchy. Here's a film which flies in the face of curtailment of rights and freedoms seen through 20-year-old Nedjma's experiences and encounters. Her journalist sister assassinated, her student friends traumatised and prevented by machismo from making the most private and personal choices about their own lives, Nedjma decides to organise a fashion show with revealing clothes made out of a cloth, a haïk, traditionally used to cover women like a hijab. Papicha is young and full of energy. The fast-moving action flows from one chapter to the other. With the action revolving around Nedjma's all-female university residence, Meddour's characters span a range of male and female situations. For example, one male shop owner is sympathetic to the girls, another puts on a front for the religious fundamentalists, another delights in the cloistering of the girls, exploits them and would even rape them. Females and males are equally part of the clampdown on freedom for women, but women fight the hardest against it. Meddour's film avoids pitfalls and endows Papicha with appeal beyond the 15-35 female age group. Click on the "play" button above to hear Emily Beecham talking about "Little Joe" and about the rest of this films in this edition of our Cinefile podcast.     Fahim, the little chess prince Gérard Dépardieu (as grumpy chess coach Xavier Parmentier) reigns supreme in this French film for all ages, which just fails to bring tears to the eyes. Fahim, the Little Chess Prince is based on the true-life story of a Bangladeshi wunderkind, son of an asylum seeker who's determined his misfortune will transfomed into 8 year-old Fahim's triumph.

Miss Emily Beecham plays Minerva (aka The Widow) on the AMC Martial Arts show, Into The Badlands. Miss Emily Beecham – Episode 170 I was blessed to have AMC approach us and inquire about interviews for both Miss Emily Beecham and Mr. Daniel Wu. Of course, we said yes, and did what we could to make schedules work (which, as you might imagine, was a bit difficult due to their extensive commitments.) It was an honor to speak with Miss Beecham, and we get some good insight into her character, Minerva, better known as The Widow. We discuss what it's like on set, her injuries, the way she views her character, and a lot more. It's a fun conversation and one that gives you some great behind-the-scenes information into not only her life, but her character and the show overall. In 28 Day Later a group of misguided animal rights activists free a caged chimp infected with the "Rage" virus from a medical research lab. When London bike courier Jim (Cillian Murphy) wakes up from a coma a month after, he finds his city all but deserted. On the run from the zombie-like victims of the Rage, Jim stumbles upon a group of survivors, including Selena (Naomie Harris) and cab driver Frank (Brendan Gleeson), and joins them on a perilous journey to what he hopes will be safety. In 28 Weeks Later, six months after the original epidemic, the rage virus has all but annihilated the population of the British Isles. Nevertheless the U.S. Army declares the danger past, and American soldiers arrive to restore order and begin reconstruction. Refugees return to British soil, but one of them carries a deadly secret: The virus is not gone and is even more dangerous than before.
