In episode 13 of (Pop) Cultural Marxism, Ajay and Isi ruminate on a largely dismal year in pop culture. Kicking off with a discussion of unexpected developments in the world of health insurance, the conversation turns to a number of broad trends that characterized culture this year: AI, long production cycles, platforms—rather than cultural works—as objects of cathexis, IP art, and the use of IP as trans-media anchors. Along the way, they discuss social bandits, collective effervescence, Leiji Matsumoto's Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem, the Criterion Closet truck, Sony's push into the television space, Jon Chu's Wicked, and 2024's revealing box office numbers. In the second half of the episode, Ajay and Isi discuss the year's highlights (Metaphor: ReFantazio [GoTY], Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, Lies of P, Mati Diop's Dahomey, Shuchi Talati's Girls Will Be Girls, a performance of book 1 of The Odyssey by Joseph Medeiros, Edward Berger's Conclave, Todd Phillip's divisive Joker: Folie à Deux, the second season of AMC's Interview with the Vampire, and True Detective: Night Country) and lowlights (Denis Villeneuve's Dune 2, Luca Guadagnino's Challengers, and a whole lot of "just okay" television)—with more to come in a follow-up episode after the holidays!

Jon Chu grew up in Silicon Valley, in the shadow of Apple Park. His father, Chef Chu, still runs his eponymous restaurant there, and Jon worshiped Steve Jobs as a kid. As a teen, he used Apple products to learn how to make movies. Now he directs some of the biggest movies in Hollywood, but his relationship with the tech industry is much more complex.  Kara and Jon discuss his “new view” trilogy: Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights, and his latest film, Wicked. They unpack his memoir Viewfinder, and Chu explains how growing up in Silicon Valley shaped his understanding of technology — and how the industry's switch towards data surveillance has changed his relationship with it as an artist.  Questions? First up this week, host Sarah Crespi talks to Jon Chu, a presidential young professor in international affairs at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore, about how people around the world define democracy. Does democracy mean elections, freedom of the press, social mobility, or something else? Chu's team found there was common ground across six countries. In many places with backsliding democracies, leaders may be tempted to change the definition of democracy to their own ends—this study suggests the people they rule won't be fooled.   Next, when staying at home meant choosing between chemistry and basketball, Lena Svanholm sought an opportunity in the U.S. to pursue both. She joins producer Kevin McLean to discuss her next steps in balancing dual careers in science and professional sports.   In a sponsored segment from the Science/AAAS Custom Publishing Office, Erika Berg, director and senior editor of Custom Publishing, interviews Michal Elovitz about gaps in women's health research. Her work on "Jem" produced a serious cult following that persists to this day. She lent her voice to many radio and TV projects while writing and performing her original music as a solo recording artist in Los Angeles CA, Nashville TN and Dallas, Texas. In 2015 Newark appeared in the live action feature film adaptation on Jem and the Holograms directed by Jon Chu.new live-action Barbie movie. Ryan Gosling is also playing Ken while Margot Robbie plays Barbie. John's role had been kept a secret until it was revealed at Cinemacon. The website says John is playing a male mermaid named Merman Ken Mattel Creates Down Syndrome Barbie Doll: Raw Story says Mattel introduced a new Down Syndrome Barbie doll yesterday. The company worked with the National Down Syndrome Society to create the doll.Mattell says; "Barbie plays an important role in a child's early experiences, and we are dedicated to doing our part to counter social stigma through play. Our goal is to enable all children to see themselves in Barbie, while also encouraging children to play with dolls who do not look like themselves.''The National Down Syndrome Society says, "This Barbie serves as a reminder that we should never underestimate the power of representation. It is a huge step forward for inclusion and a moment that we are celebrating.” Retail Dive saysMattel and The Gap are teaming for a Barbie clothing collection. The new line will be available on the Gap's website starting on May 23rd. A clothing collection based on Mattel's Hot Wheel toys is also in development. Tim Burton plans to direct the film. Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder are returning to reprise their roles from the original movie. InInterview with Samantha Newark voice Jem and Jerrica June 30th “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” director James Mangold tells Total Film magazine that he used technology to de-age Harrison Ford for a 25-minute scene in the film. He says Harrison pulled it off because he was able to pretend that he was 35 instead of 79. ''Ford is incredibly gifted and agile which made it easy to pretend that he was 35 when filming the scenes. We had hundreds of hours of footage of him in close-ups, in mediums, in wides, in every kind of lighting, night and day. I could shoot Harrison on a Monday as, you know, a 79-year-old playing a 35-year-old, and I could see dailies by Wednesday with his head already replaced.”Harrison Ford tells Total Film magazine that he is not going to appear in the new Indiana Jones TV series. He says “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” will be the last time he plays Indy. “This is the final film in the series, and this is the last time I'll play the character. I anticipate that it will be the last time that he appears in a film.” Chris Evans doesn't think he is going to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to play Captain America again. The International News quotes him as saying, "It's tough, because look, I love that role deeply. He means so much to me, and I really do. I think there's more Steve Rogers stories to tell, sure. But at the same time, I'm very, very precious with it. It's like this little shiny thing that I have that I love so much, and I just don't want to mess up in any way, and I was a part of something that was so special for the special period of time and in a way, it really landed so well. As much as I'm connected to that role and love telling those stories and working with those people. It doesn't quite feel right right now."

“There's this children's book called Miss Rumphius, and I've carried it around with me my entire life. It's about a woman who grandfather tells her three things, and the last one in the most difficult thing of all and that's to fill the world with beauty. And I give this book to every one of my friends who are having babies, I have a copy with me almost at all times, and I'm reminded of that feeling that Jonathan Larson had in Tick, Tick…Boom! Of how much time do we have to do something great.”Alice Brooks is a cinematographer who has worked on award-winning features, television and commercials.
