In our third episode, we dive headfirst into the freezing, sterile seas of Iodo, or Io Island, a film made by the notorious South Korean director Kim Ki-young in 1977. Echoing the pagan melancholy of Robin Hardy's "The Wicker Man", Iodo concerns the investigation of a man's disappearance on a remote island populated entirely by … Continue reading Episode 3- The Water Ghost: Iodo →
July 19, 2023 - World-renowned South Korean directors, including Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon Ho, cite Kim Ki-young as being the greatest Korean influence on their work. When Yuh-Jung Youn won the best supporting actress award at the 2021 Oscars, she thanked Kim Ki-young, the “genius” director of the first film she starred in, 1971's Woman of Fire. During his thirty year career, Kim Ki-young produced thirty-three films and became revered by critics within the national and international community as one of the few South Korean ‘auteurs'. As the first comprehensive scholarly volume on Kim Ki-young in English, ReFocus: The Films of Kim Ki-young covers his entire career and history of cinematic work, highlighting the thematic and stylistic singularity of Kim's oeuvre, which was produced relative to the specific historical and cultural conditions of post-war South Korea. It offers an innovative departure point from which to explore South Korean film relative to the wider history of world cinema, in addition to situating Kim's work within the broader fields of Korean modern history, transnational cinema and cultural studies. Join us for a conversation about Kim Ki-young's films and career with the contributors to this volume: Jason Bechervaise, Steve Choe, Chung-kang Kim, and Ariel Schudson. Nowe pokolenie artystów mogło dzięki temu eksperymentować z językiem filmowym, przepracowując jednocześnie traumy dorastania w zmiennych i niespokojnych latach 80. i 90.

The Korean War is aptly known in America as the “Forgotten War.” During the 1960s, the subject took in its last cinematic hurrah before getting overshadowed by the rising unpopularity of America's involvement in the Vietnam War. Meanwhile, South Korea was experiencing a fabled “Golden Age” of cinema that followed the civil war and continued into the ‘60s – one that had some of its most famous hits rather cruelly lost to time. At Cinema60, we've largely ignored the Combat Film genre on whole… until now! In this episode, Bart and Jenna take the opportunity to dig a little deeper into the war and “Golden Age” that time forgot. Watching three American films about the Korean War side-by-side with three films from South Korea on the same subject, they parse propaganda from profundity, patriotism from personal morality, and savagery from psychosis from two different nationalistic perspectives. While our two hosts don't necessarily see eye-to-eye on the entertainment value of the genre or what makes a film pro- or anti- war, there's an unexpected amount of agreement on which of these films is worth a look and which you can skip. The following films are discussed:• All the Young Men (1960) Directed by Hall Bartlett Starring Alan Ladd, Sidney Poitier, James Darren• Five Marines (1961) 오인의 해병 Directed by Kim Ki-duk Starring Choi Mun-lyong, Shin Yeong-gyun, Hwang Hae • War Hunt (1962) Directed by Denis Sanders Starring John Saxon, Robert Redford, Sydney Pollack• The Marines Who Never Returned (1963) 돌아오지 않는 해병 Directed by Lee Man-hee Starring Jang Dong-hwi, Lee Dae-yeob, Ku Bong-seo• The Hook (1963) Directed by George Seaton Starring Kirk Douglas, Robert Walker Jr., Nick Adams• Red Scarf (1964) 빨간 마후라 Directed by Shin Sang-ok Starring Choi Eun-hie, Shin Yeong-gyun, Choi Mu-ryong
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tu-dien-lich-su/message

We continue with our discussion of the MARTIN SCORSESE'S WORLD CINEMA strand on MUBI, this time focusing on Kim Ki-young's THE HOUSEMAID (South Korea, 1960). MUBI's take is that it influenced Bong Joon-ho's PARASITE – clearly evident – and that it ‘changed the course of South Korean cinema forever. An immense success when released in 1960, this striking masterpiece is a blend of sexual obsession and class struggle, horror and social critique'. In the podcast, we agree with most of what MUBI says about it but question the claim that it's a masterpiece,' finding the film deeply misogynistic in ways that go even beyond the patriarchal norms of its time and culture. The very handsome version being screened by MUBI is the 2008 restoration by the Korean Film Archive and is a real pleasure to see, making visible the film's very real inventiveness with light, composition and movement.

Korea24 – 2021.11.22. (Monday) News Briefing: The government has assessed last week's COVID-19 risk level for the nation as "high” and the Seoul metro region as "very high," in a new five-point scale system. This comes as the nation reported 2,827 new cases on Monday, the highest number for a Monday. The number of severe cases stayed above 500 for the third straight day. (Eunice Kim) In-Depth News Analysis: President Moon Jae-in held a town hall meeting with members of the public on Sunday to answer questions about his major policies. This was only the second such event during his presidency, and with less than 6 months left of his time in office, it was likely his last. Most questions were centered around the coronavirus situation and people’s livelihoods, but as this meeting came during election campaign season, no questions related to politics or the presidential candidates were allowed, which led to criticism that it did not serve to answer questions that the public most wanted to ask. Law professor Kim Ki-chang (김기창) from Korea University joins us on the line to provide his review of the event. Korea Trending with Walter Lee: 1. The police are facing strong criticism for failing to save a woman under police protection from her ex-boyfriend, who stabbed her to death. The Supreme Court overturned lower court rulings to find a bus driver liable for injuries that a passenger received when they fell as the bus stopped. The new Korean fantasy horror series ‘Hellbound’ was reportedly the most-watched show on Netflix on Saturday. (넷플릭스 '지옥' 공개 하루 만에 전 세계 드라마 1위) Monday Sports Round-up: Last Thursday, the KT Wiz completed their sweep of the Doosan Bears in the KBO Korean Series, securing their first ever championship. Sports reporter Yoo Jee-ho from the Yonhap News Agency wraps up the series for us, as well as the latest twist in the football K League 1 title race, and golfer Ko Jin-young’s win in the final championship of the LPGA season to capture both the Player of the Year and money titles. Morning Edition Preview with Mark Wilson-Choi: - In tomorrow’s Korea Times, Kwon Mee-yoo writes about “The Republic of Color” exhibition that showcases the vibrant culture of the Dominican Republic. - Tomorrow’s Korea Herald features a piece by Kan Hyeong-woo that delves into why politicians in Korea often visit graves and national cemeteries.
Korea24 – 2021.07.01. (Thursday) - News Briefing: The Cabinet on Thursday finalized a supplementary budget proposal worth 33 trillion won to fund COVID-19 relief payments to the bottom 80 percent income bracket. The extra budget is this year's second and the sixth overall since the start of the pandemic. (Koo Heejin) - In-Depth News Analysis: Dr. Bong Young-shik, Research Fellow at the Yonsei Institute for North Korean Studies and Dr. Brad Glosserman, Visiting Professor at the Center for Rule-making Strategies at Tama University in Tokyo, delve into the sharp divide between the ruling and opposing camps when it comes to managing South Korea's relationship with Japan, and if such a divide could further strain Korea-Japan ties. - Korea Trending with Lee Ju-young: The government will support cosmetic refill shops to reduce waste(오늘부터 화장품 리필 매장서샴푸·린스 등 용기에 담아갈 수 있어), a man is acquitted on charges of trespassing into a public female restroom("너무 급해서" 여성 화장실에 "잘못" 들어갔다고 주장한 한 남자...무죄선고), and pro volleyball twins accused of school bullying are officially dropped from their squad(흥국생명, 이재영-이다영 선수 등록 최종 포기). - Explore Korea: Allison Needels from travel blog Moon Bear Travel shares her top beach picks on Jeju Island and dives into the deep history of the island’s famous female divers, the haenyeo(해녀). - Morning Edition Preview with Mark Wilson-Choi: Mark shares a piece from the Korea Times on late legendary filmmaker Kim Ki-young’s(김기영) posthumously released film “An Experience to Die For: Be a Wicked Woman(천사여 악녀가 되라)” starring Youn Yuh-jung(윤여정).

Filmy odcinka A Hot Roof, reż. In this week's episode of Me, You and Jeju, Darryl Coote and Alexis Oesterle discuss the passing of Kim Ki-hong, a transgender activist and politician on Jeju Island. Ki-hong organized the Jeju Queer Festival, ran as a politician for the Green Party and was an outspoken activist for LGBTQ+ rights not only on the island but in Korea. Ze died by suicide two weeks ago and his passing has been felt throughout the nation. However, Ki-hong was one of three members of South Korea's transgender community to die by suicide in the past few weeks, and Seoul-based freelance journalist Raphael Rashid sat down with Darryl and Alexis to discuss issues currently affecting this marginalized group. For those wishing to make a donation to the Jeju Queer Festival in Ki-hong's name, either reach out to the podcast at meyouandjeju@gmail.com or it can be directly deposited to NH/농협 301-0235-1482-11 (제주퀴어문화축제 조직위원회). Folytatjuk dél-koreai kiruccanásunkat. A múlt heti Park Chan-wook-filmhármas után egy másik ikonikus filmrendezővel foglalkozunk, aki a 2000-es évek elején tett szert nemzetközi ismertségre. Ő Kim Ki-duk, magyarosabban Kim Gidok, akitől a Tavasz, nyár, ősz, tél… Először is, kicsoda Kim Ki-duk? Mik a film legsejtelmesebb szimbólumai? Melyek a karakterek legrejtélyesebb döntései? Megtaláljuk-e a lelki békénket az adás végére? Elwood and Stephen take a look at Wong Kai-War's Chungking Express, a film comprised of two rather untraditional love stories as Takeshi Kaneshiro plays a cop who finds himself caught up Brigitte Lin's mysterious drug smuggler. At the same time Tony Leung (also playing a cop) who in attempting to get over the loss of his girlfriend (Valerie Chow) attracts the interest of the quirky snack bar worker Faye (Faye Wong) who has become determined to improve his situation They also share thier Asian cinema shames as they reveal the films they perhaps should have seen but for whatever reason have yet to, while also taking a look at the films of Kim Ki-duk
