The Glass and Out Pod wants to wish everyone a Happy Holidays! To celebrate the start of this year's World Junior Championships, we're revisiting one of our favourite conversations from 2020 featuring two former Gold Medal winning coaches, Brent Sutter and Phil Housley. Brent Sutter led Canada to back-to-back gold medals in 2005 and 2006, going an incredible 12-0 in the process. The 2005 team is widely considered the best Canadian team of all-time, featuring a star-studded lineup of NHL All-Stars and future Hall of Famers. He would also return to coach in the 2014 tournament, where Canada finished fourth. Phil Housley was twice an assistant coach with Team USA in 2007 and 2011, capturing bronze medals both years. He would then return as the program's Head Coach in 2013, leading them to the fourth gold medal in the country's history. We hope you enjoy this very special talk, as the two share their experience leading their respective countries to Gold.

We continue with Rob Cowie in the segment two of four here on "Inside the Game", brought to you by flexxCOACH.Rob discusses graduating from school and signing with the Winnipeg Jets and his first training camp. "Cowboy" says that you learn fast that it is a business. That this is how guys make a living and it is tough. He looked around the room and you see guys like Phil Housley in the room. You have to learn how to be a professional hockey player. Rob got sent to Moncton in the AHL and played two years and then wound up in Springfield and had a breakout season. Was named to the AHL All-Star team and yet did not get called up to the parent club the Hartford Whalers. Joel Quennville was his coach in Springfield and he learned a lot from on defense. 1994-95 he winds up in Phoenix playing for the Los Angeles Kings minor league team. The lockout happened that fall of 1994 and the coaches and management from the Kings came to Phoenix. He met Barry Melrose and he was impressed with Rob's play as a defenseman.Rob's story about getting called up to the Kings with Sean O"Donnell getting injured. Was a very special moment in his hockey career. He tells about playing with Wayne Gretzky and how Gretzky set him up for his first goal in the NHL. Enjoy this segment great story about his NHL career.
Happy to be back on the bus. A brief conversation about the new “C” word, cheating vs. competitive advantage, and definitely not Tom Brady.
Happy holidays everyone and welcome to a very special edition of the Glass and Out podcast! For many hockey fans, the holidays mean one thing: the start of the World Junior Championships. To celebrate this year's tournament, we decided to bring on two former gold medal winning coaches to discuss their processes to leading their respective teams and countries to a World Junior Championship. Brent Sutter led Canada to back-to-back gold medals in 2005 and 2006, going an incredible 12-0 in the process. The 2005 team is of course widely considered the best Canadian team of all-time, featuring a star-studded lineup of NHL All-Stars and future Hall of Famers. Sutter has been owner and president of the WHL's Red Deer Rebels since 1999. During that time, he's spent 16 total seasons as the team's GM and head coach, leading Red Deer to a Memorial Cup and taking home CHL’s Coach of the Year Award in 2001. He spent five seasons coaching in the NHL, split between the New Jersey Devils and Calgary Flames. As a player, Sutter is a two-time Stanley Cup champ and played over 1,000 games. He represented Canada on four occasions, including three consecutive Canada Cups. Housley is a Hockey Hall of Famer and one of the most decorated defencemen to ever play the game. He got his coaching career started in Minnesota with Stillwater High School. After nine seasons, he'd join the Nashville Predators as an assistant. His first head coaching gig would come with Buffalo Sabres for two seasons. Currently, he is in the process of preparing for his second season as an assistant with the Arizona Coyotes. We hope you enjoy this very special episode, as the two share their experience leading their respective countries to Gold.

A while back, Matt & Rob broke down a list of the top 50 Russian NHL'ers ever, and analyzed how a KHL team would do if dropped in to the NHL. And as promised, it's now time to expand that out to other countries. In this episode we'll take a look at what Team USA vs Team Sweden would look like if they created All Star teams from 1990 until present. It's the modern era only and only points scored in the NHL are valid. It's Forsberg vs Modano. It's Sundin vs Hull. It's Lidstrom vs Chelios. It's a hockey international incident waiting to boil over as the guys welcome you to September, the start of hockey season, with some sweet debate. Craig Patrick (born May 20, 1946) is an American former hockey player, coach and general manager, the son of Lynn Patrick and the grandson of Lester Patrick. During the 1980 Winter Olympics, Patrick was the Assistant General Manager and Assistant Coach under Herb Brooks for the United States men’s national ice hockey team, which won the gold medal and defeated the Soviet Union in the “Miracle on Ice“. From 1989 to 2006, Patrick was the General Manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins where he oversaw back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 1991 and 1992, as well as the drafting and signing of some players that would later win a Stanley Cup title for the Penguins in 2009. He was the man that drafted Jaromir Jagr, Marc-André Fleury, Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby, otherwise known as “Sid the Kid”!!! And Craig joins Chuck Bastie and Todd Miller for a discussion of all things hockey, including his stint as Assistant General Manager and Assistant Coach under Herb Brooks for the United States men’s national ice hockey team that won Gold at the 1980 Olympics and became known as the “Miracle On Ice”. And Todd suggests the Toronto Maple Leafs might need a head coach ;-) Craig was also the general manager for the 2002 US Olympic team, also coached by Brooks, which won the silver medal – the first US hockey medal since the 1980 team. This tournament was further notable as it was largely the same roster that underperformed in the 1998 Olympics, yet aging players like Mike Richter and Phil Housley performed well beyond expectations and were named to the 2002 tournament all-star team. During both Olympic tournaments, the Team USA defeated the Soviets/Russians.
