Northwest Bible Church - Jan. 25, 2026 - Matthew - Alan Conner Matthew 5:31-32 Divorce and Remarriage Intro A. THE O.T. TEACHING ON DIVORCE FROM DEUTERONOMY 24:1-4 (Matthew 5:31). “It was said” Observations on Deuteronomy 24:1-4. a. There is no command to divorce, nor is God giving grounds for divorce. b. The meaning of “indecency.” The prevailing view was that of Hillel: divorce for any reason. B. CHRIST'S VIEW ON DIVORCE (Matthew 5:31-32). Jesus' view has only one exception. The added information from Matthew 19: a. 19:4-6. Christ appeals to God's original design for marriage. b. 19:8. Divorce was allowed due to the hardness of their hearts. c. 19:9. Jesus repeats the one exception rule mentioned in Matthew 5:32. The meaning of “unchastity” (porneia) is sexual sin in general (Matthew 5:32). How did the death penalty for adultery get changed to divorce? a. Sinful unwillingness to obey, and God allowing divorce. b. In 1st century Judaism, the law required divorce for an adulterous wife. c. The law seems to allow for lesser punishments (Numbers 35:30-31). d. God's example of divorcing Israel, Jeremiah 3:8. SUMMARY
Divorce and remarriage are two of the most disputed topics in the body of Christ. Some say you should never get a divorce and, if you do, you can never be remarried. Others say divorce is okay because of adultery. And another group says you can divorce and remarry for any reasons. In today's message, I examine what Jesus says about these two issues. __________ Deuteronomy 24:1–3 KJV, Matthew 19:3 YLT, Mark 10:3–4 YLT, Mark 10:6–9 YLT, Matthew 19:7–9 YLT, John 16:13 KJV __________ Partner with Us: https://churchforentrepreneurs.com/partner Connect with Us: https://churchforentrepreneurs.com Leave a Comment: https://churchforentrepreneurs.com/comments __________

"How should we understand Paul's counsel in chapter 7 about staying single ‘because of the present distress'? In chapters 8–10, Paul talks about food offered to idols, liberty, and not causing others to stumble. How do these principles guide us in modern issues where Christians disagree on gray areas? How should the church today approach communion with the reverence and unity Paul calls for? In today's episode, Emma Dotter talks with Watermark member, Callie Nixon, about 1 Corinthians 7-11 and discuss the topics of singleness, marraige, living as an encouragement to others, and partaking in communion with reverence. Callie reminds us that these chapters reflect the love Christ has for us as we are instructed for right living with him. We live in the ruins of a great civilization that was built in many ways by faithful men and women, who kept their marriage vows. Nevertheless in fallen world, sin will wreak havoc, and we need to know what to do when sin happens. The fundamental duty is confession of sin and forgiveness, but marriage is a public covenant and therefore sometimes there are public ramifications for certain sins. The Text: “The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?...” (Mt. 19:3-9)King's Cross Church is a member congregation of the CREC in Moscow, ID. Dr. Instone-Brewer received his PhD from the University of Cambridge, where he specialized in early rabbinic literature. Today he is a Baptist minister in the UK who served for twenty years as a research fellow at Tyndale House in Cambridge, He is the author of lots of books and articles, including Divorce and Remarriage in the Bible (which my friend Gordon Spivey recommends) and also The Jesus Scandals, Moral Questions of the Bible, and Science and the Bible. He has helped develop a solid Bible app called STEPBible -- one more way the academy is shaping the practice of ordinary Christians, especially as they engage scripture. Oh, and Dr. Instone-Bridges is on the NIV translation team … which totally fascinates me and is the reason I asked him to join us on AoH.
