Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
“Two years and a half years ago, when coming down the Nile in a dahabiah, I stopped at . . . Tel el-Amarna. In the course of my exploration, I noticed . . . the foundations of a large building, which had just been laid bare by the natives. . . . A few months afterwards the natives, still going on with their work of disinterment, discovered among the foundations a number of clay tablets covered with characters the like of which had not previously been seen in the land of Egypt.”Those were the words of Archibald Henry Sayce, linguist, valetudinarian, and eventually first Professor of Assyriology at the University of Oxford. What he had noticed was the uncovering of the Amarna Letters, a set of clay tablets written in cuneiform, about which Sayce–and many others–would be intensively concerned. Finding these letters was like uncovering a file cabinet in the Pharoah of Egypt's foreign ministry, suddenly providing a set of written sources that illuminated unknown areas of the past. With me to talk about the Amarna letter is Eric H. Cline. He is professor of classics and anthropology at George Washington University, and author most recently of Love, War, and Diplomacy: The Discovery of the Amarna Letters and the Bronze Age World They Revealed. This is his third appearance on the podcast. For this episode's show notes, and other resources, go to the Historically Thinking SubstackChapter OutlineIntroduction & Discovery of the Amarna Letters (00:00)Illicit Excavations & Context (04:45)The Translation Race (14:52)The World of the Letters: Great Kings & Diplomacy (29:00)Local Rulers & Conflicts (43:08)Social Network Analysis (51:57)Modern Relevance & Conclusion (57:41)
From the acclaimed author of 1177 B.C., a spellbinding account of the archaeological find that opened a window onto the vibrant diplomatic world of the ancient Near East In 1887, an Egyptian woman made an astonishing discovery among the ruins of the heretic king Akhenaten's capital city, a site now known as Amarna. She found a cache of cuneiform tablets, nearly four hundred in all, that included correspondence between the pharaohs and the mightiest powers of the day, such as the Hittites, Babylonians, and Assyrians. Love, War, and Diplomacy: The Discovery of the Amarna Letters and the Bronze Age World They Revealed (Princeton University Press, 2025) tells the story of the Amarna Letters and the dramatic world of the Bronze Age they revealed. Blending scholarly expertise with painstaking detective work, Eric Cline describes the spectacular discovery, the fierce competition among dealers and museums to acquire the tablets, and the race by British and German scholars to translate them. Dating to the middle of the fourteenth century BCE and the time of Tutankhamun's immediate predecessors, Amenhotep III and his son Akhenaten, the Amarna Letters are the only royal archive from New Kingdom Egypt known to exist. In them, we learn of royal marriages, diplomatic negotiations, gift-giving, intrigue, and declarations of brotherly love between powerful rulers as well as demands made by the petty kings in Canaan who owed allegiance to Egypt's pharaohs. A monumental achievement, Love, War, and Diplomacy transports readers to the glorious age of the Amarna Letters and the colonial era that brought them to light and reveals how the politics, posturing, and international intrigues of the ancient Near East are not so unlike today's. In this episode, we explore the unconventional story of Yvon Chouinard, the “dirtbag” climber who became the founder of Patagonia and ultimately gave away his billion-dollar company to protect its mission. In conversation with David Gelles—New York Times journalist and author of Dirtbag Billionaire—we dig into the paradoxes of success, the power of awareness, and the ongoing tension between principle and profit. We discuss how Chouinard's love for the outdoors led him to create climbing gear out of necessity, and how his refusal to ignore the negative impact of his products shaped Patagonia's legacy of environmental stewardship and values-driven leadership. We reflect on how meaningful work often reveals itself not through grand visions, but through paying attention to the patterns and tensions within our everyday actions. The episode challenges leaders and creatives to reconsider what it means to act with integrity and to recognize the marks—both good and bad—we leave through our work. Chouinard's story offers a blueprint for leading with conviction, making hard calls in service of a greater purpose, and understanding that values build momentum over time.Five Key Learnings from the Episode:Calling is Revealed, Not Found: Purpose often unfolds through the work we're already doing, showing itself in the problems we care about and the frustrations we can't ignore.Principle Over Profit: True leadership is measured not by stated values, but by the sacrifices made when those values clash with financial incentives—as shown when Patagonia prioritized environmental impact over sales.Awareness Precedes Change: Staying attentive to the second- and third-order effects of our decisions is essential for creating lasting positive impact and avoiding unintended harm.Success Requires Restraint: Responsible growth means not chasing expansion at all costs, but deliberately throttling progress to ensure alignment with core mission and sustainable practices.Legacy is Built Through Consistent Integrity: Values-driven decisions compound over time, creating an enduring legacy that outlasts individual achievements or wealth.Get full interviews and bonus content for free! Indian Motorcycle has officially unveiled its 2026 lineup, marking what the industry calls a "cyclic year" — a season of refinements rather than revolutions. The big story is the debut of the Sport Scout RT, a bold new addition to the Scout family that bridges the gap between performance cruiser and light sport-tourer. With its 1250cc liquid-cooled engine producing 105 horsepower, moto-style bars, 19-inch front wheel, and locking hard bags, the Sport Scout RT delivers both aggression and practicality. Starting at $16,999 and available in Black Smoke, Sunset Red Metallic, and Chalk, it's the most performance-oriented Scout yet. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Beyond the new model, Indian's 2026 range sees fresh paint, updated graphics, and new accessories across its Scout, Chief, and Touring lines. The PowerPlus baggers and tourers continue largely unchanged, aside from color updates and new accessory options like handlebars, seats, luggage liners, and audio upgrades. While Indian continues to appeal to younger riders with modern tech and styling, the brand still lacks a truly low-cost entry model—a gap that could become crucial as the next generation of riders leans toward $6K–$8K machines. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Overall, Indian's 2026 strategy focuses on refinement and appeal rather than reinvention. The Sport Scout RT is a standout move that adds excitement to the lineup, offering a stylish and capable option for riders who want performance without sacrificing comfort.
