Deena Kastor, marathon runner, Olympic medalist, former world record holder, author, mum and general all round good egg stopped by on FunkQuest.Playing the new retired athlete edition, Jonathan and Deena discussed, one on one the following FUNK. 1. Who was your best sponsor?2. What was your pathway into elite sport?3. What is the stupidest thing you have seen?4. Which opponent did you most admire?5. What really happens in the locker room? And much more besides.Does Deena wake up worry about going the wrong way in a race? What is she thinking about with 5 or 10 minutes to run, about to WIN the race, with 40,000 people behind her?
We sit down and don't hit record with Erin Montgomery and then hit record. Erin shares how she got started, overcoming races, and other ultra insights.
Maggie Rettelle has been on a quest to run a sub-3 marathon. Having qualified for IronMan Kona twice and run a 3:30 marathon off the bike, Maggie believed she had the strength and grit to get it done. Race experiences and her fire to achieve it shaped her to dive deeper into nutrition, fueling, sleep, mantras, and her mental game. As athletes, we all hope for a perfect training cycle. We root for the best weather and optimal conditions to help us smash our goals. On Saturday 5/21 in Chattanooga, Maggie CRUSHED a sub-5 Half IronMan, running her fastest 1/2 (1:36) off the bike and WON her age group by an astonishing 12 minutes! 7 days later, on 5/28, she laced 'em up at the Bayshore Marathon where she ROCKED a 2:58:02, smashed down the sub-3 door, and made her dream come true. Maggie is a board-certified health & wellness coach and USAT Level 1 certified triathlon coach at TS2 Coaching and is all about community and giving back. So much of our RunChat centers on gratitude. For anyone who has struggled with their nutrition, race day fueling plans, or mindset, there are SO many great takeaways. I hope you all enjoy this conversation as much as I did! If you enjoy the episode, it would mean the world to me if you would rate the podcast or write a review and share feedback wherever you get your podcast groove on. Ashley Feldstein is guest #5! I have been a long time follower of Ashley on Instagram because I love her wit, sense of humour, and of course her passion for running. We have bonded over our shared love of running, coffee, and disdain of forced rest days. She is extremely funny, and always keeps it real when it comes to this sport we love so much. In this episode we chat about how to deal with running setbacks such as injuries, what to do with our race medals, Ashley's half marathon goals—specifically a 1:59:59 half marathon, going pantless, and Eminem. I am so stoked to share NYC Running Legend David Kilgore's story to kickoff 2021! David has rock star run creds, having the unique experience of running for 3 elite schools; Colorado, Florida and Oklahoma State. He excels from 5k up to 100 miles and competed for the US Team at the 50K Trail and Ultra World Championships in Portugal. What makes David so endearing is his easy going, surfer chill vibe. But don’t be fooled, he’s also been known to hurdle barriers on the FDR in OSR Races with no prize money on the line, and finish trail races bleeding all over the course—in other words, my kinda guy. During the pandemic, David stepped up with two huge fundraising campaigns, running 100 miles for the 1st time in the Florida, raising over 20K for frontline workers and engaging his employer, On Running, in the campaign to provide shoes to nurses and doctors and help out the running stores he has a relationship with. More recently, David ran 73 miles through all 5 boroughs to provide 2.5 million meals for the NYC Food Bank. He engaged with his followers on FB and IG Live and appeared on ESPN and CNN. David’s joy for life is infectious and his ability to rally the run community for greater causes is truly EPIC! It’s not only the most FUN I’ve had on a RunChat, but so damn INSPIRING!! If you enjoy the conversation, it would mean the world to me if you would rate the podcast or write a review and share feedback wherever you get your podcast groove on.
