In any event, this workout is a useful way to analyze your fitness and determine your marathon pace. Yasso 800's can be really helpful to an injured runner who's returning to running when trying to figure out how fast you should run your post-injury marathon.  Today on the Doc On The Run Podcast we're talking about how to use the Yasso 800s to test your marathon fitness after you've recovered from a running injury.

If you ever imagined a life travelling the world, then running may be the way to make it happen - or at least that's how it happened for retired Chief Running Officer of RunnersWorld Magazine, Mr Bart Yasso. He is one of few people to have run a marathon on every continent. There are few legacy sessions with more legs than the Yasso 800s workout. In the fall of 2001, Amby Burfoot wrote an article in Runner's World about a session that the magazine's races services manager, Bart Yasso did repeatedly in preparation for a marathon. He'd been doing this session 3-4 times a cycle for over 15 years. It's simple as shit: 10 x 800m in your marathon goal time with tequal rest. So if you want to go sub 3, you do 10 x 800m in 3:00 w/ a 3 min rest. In this episode, we take this session to task. Or, more accurately, I do. I get a little spicy in this one so beware. I have some strong opinions about it. In Bart's defense, he didn't proselytize this session, Burfoot did. & he didn't do it as a predictor session, he did it as a progressive load session, very different animal. So perhaps my ire was misguided. But as I point out repeatedly, I am not banging on about Yasso, I am banging on about the way this session has been appropriated & infantilized. You be the judge.  Regardless, we have a lot of fun with this one & we decided to rename the workout...or create an adapted version...I am not really sure. Last week I said "Stories Abound." This week, "Joker's Abound." At least I'm consistent. & speaking of consistency, two notes before we send you into the meat of this conversation: 1.) This episode is a day late to be posted because I didn't get it scheduled correctly before I headed out to the Boston Marathon. What an amazing weekend. But more on that next week. 2.) We added some bonus content. If you listen through to the end, there is a hidden track that actually began this conversation but was so far afield from the main thrust of the topic that we had to cut it. But at the last minute, I thought I should add it as a bonus. Let us know if you like the banter. So, in all it's raging glory, I present to you the episode we call Ted Lasso 800's. Godspeed, my friends, godspeed.

RUN While we were at the Anchorage RunFest, we met up with two inspirational figures in the running community: Marko Cheseto and Bart Yasso.  We heard Marko talk at the pasta feed on Saturday of the race weekend.  We think the lessons he spoke about are worth sharing, and we do so from a bit of audio we captured at the luncheon.  We discuss these lessons and what they mean to us in running and life.  (Please forgive the audio.  A fire alarm was going off for much of Marko's speech.  His message is worth hearing, and hopefully, you can get past that to listen to the meaningful message.  Thank you for hanging in there, if you can.) EAT Grizzly Dogs Food Truck was outside King Street Brewing while we were in Anchorage for the Anchorage RunFest.  When we saw their menu, we couldn't help but try their signature item, "The Grizzly Dog" for 10.00.  They chop a reindeer sausage and smother it with sautéed onions, peppers, and cheese sauce. Yum!  Other items on their menu piqued our interest, so… of course, we want to get back to it when we are in Anchorage again.   DRINK King Street Brewing is a huge space with tasty beer on the menu and a beautiful view of the mountains in Anchorage.  You can sample their beer from any three stories while you look over into the brewing facility or take a seat by a window and admire the beautiful Mountain View while having a cold one.  They have a wide variety of styles on their menu.  We talked about what we had while we were there.  We hope to get back to this neat space with many friendly beer tenders.   If you choose to indulge, please drink responsibly by having a designated driver or taking a rideshare service. We have featured one of our favorite cookbooks, The Healthspan Solution, on past episodes, including chatting with authors Ray Cronise and Julieanna Hever on Episodes 108 and 109 last year.   This week we made the Shepherdess Pie from the book.  We review it in this episode and talk about what made it so hearty and satisfying as a Vegetarian dish.   You can get the Kindle or hardcover book at our Amazon affiliate links below.  It does not cost anything additional to purchase the book through the links we list, but it does help support the show. This week, we feature our recipe with an option for reduced sugar. Ingredients (Serves 6-8 cups of wine) 1 - 750 ml bottles of a favorite red wine ( we selected a barrel-aged Cabernet Sauvignon  2 oranges- zest and juice of one and the other sliced in rounds to use for garnish 8 whole cloves  4 cinnamon sticks  2 whole nutmegs *Normally a cup of sugar and water are added to sweeten the recipe. To make a more healthful version, you can leave this out and drink it without sweetening or use agave nectar or honey to taste with each serving.   Directions Pour wine into the instant pot or crock pot. It's our 5th Anniversary this month. As part of the celebration, we will post flashback episodes all month long to celebrate and say thank you. If it were not for you, our Runcation Nation community, we would not have had this show for the last five years, had some of the most amazing experiences, and created lasting friendships in this community. Next up is an excellent interview with a friend of the show, Bart Yasso! RUN  We share the first part of our talk with Bart Yasso this week.  He is known as the Mayor of Running and Chief Running Officer at Runner's World until his retirement in 2017.  He talks about his running adventures, inspirations, and career with us.  Thank you, Bart, for your “wit, wisdom, and insights!” Find out more and connect with Bart Yasso here: Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/Bart-Yasso-118295040323/  Twitter:  https://twitter.com/bartyasso?lang=en  Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/bartyasso/  Website:  http://www.bartyasso.com  EAT This week, we got a bit of cooler weather here in Florida, so Dana made soup.  But not just any soup.  It is a vegetarian version of a soup we are fond of at The Columbia Restaurant.  The Spanish Bean Soup is one we had on the first episode of our show.  Theirs is delightful with Chorizo, Onion, Chickpeas, and warm spices. We used our instant pot to create this version.  It makes approximately eight servings. Here is our recipe: Ingredients: White Potatoes Diced - 6 potatoes Water - 8 Cups Dry Garbanzo Beans - 1-lb Package White Onion Diced - 1 whole onion Diced Carrots - 4 whole Diced Celery - 4 stalks Diced Jalapeño  - 1 Whole Minced Garlic - 6 Cloves Smoked Paprika - 2 Tablespoons Liquid Aminos - 4 Tablespoons Chopped Fresh Kale - Half of a 16-ounce bag Directions: Combine all ingredients except kale in the instant pot.  Set the instant pot on high and cook for one hour.  Release valve and depressurize instant pot.  Add kale.  Turn back on low for 20 minutes.  Then divide equally among eight bowls and enjoy.  Or divide among containers to store for the week for lunch or dinner.   DRINK  Monday, February 22nd, was National Margarita Day. So, we share our own Pineapple Jalapeños Margarita recipe to honor this day!   Ingredients (Serves 2) Silver Tequila - 2 ounces  Cointreau -  1 ounce Pineapple Juice - 2 ounces  Lime Juice - 1 ounce Sliced Fresh Jalapeños - 4 (2 are for muddling and two are for garnish) Sliced Lime Wedges - 2 for garnish  Jalapeño Simple Syrup (1 cup sugar, 1 cup water, one additional jalapeño halved from those listed above) Directions Make Jalapeño Simple Syrup before mixing drink by bringing 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water to a boil on high heat.  Remove from heat and add jalapeño.  Allow to steep in the mixture for a few minutes before preparing the remainder of the ingredients. Combine all the rest of the ingredients in a shaker with ice and 1 ounce of the Jalapeño Simple Syrup.  Shake for a few seconds and strain into two different glasses over ice.  Serve with a lime wedge. If you choose to indulge, please drink responsibly by having a designated driver or taking a rideshare service. Stay safe, Runcation Nation! RUN Shamrock Marathon Weekend in Virginia Beach was a great race.  We were lucky enough to meet up with fellow podcasters, have dinner with a great member of the Runcation Nation we met through the Extra Mile Podcast group on Facebook, and run a PR in the 8K since our last attempt at Gasparilla Distance Classic.  At the expo, we had a surprise, Bart Yasso!!  He announced our race as well.  He is famous for his work at Runner's World and the Yasso 800s.  You may have heard him on our show on Episodes 154, 155, 156, and 187 when we returned to the Anchorage RunFest and got to sit down with him in person.   EAT Chix on the Beach was right next door to our hotel.  It had a fantastic beach view from its patio, tasty seafood, and excellent service!  We had the She Crab Soup, Crab Dip, and a Steamer of shrimp, sausage, corn, and potatoes.  We finished the meal with Key Lime Pie.  Shout out to Samantha, our server, who was patient on a night when the restaurant was at capacity, thorough, kind, and had excellent recommendations from the menu throughout the entire meal.  If you get a chance to run this race weekend, stay on the beach and try this place out.  We strongly encourage you to call and make a reservation because this is one happening spot!   DRINK Smartmouth Brewing Company was a great time with the Will Run For Podcast crew.  They have a theme that captured our hearts.  While we only had their nonalcoholic offering, Jimmy's Grandpappy's Sparkling Lemonade, our fellow podcast hosts tried some tasty offerings from Smartmouth like Relinquish My Waffle Brown Ale and Safety Dance German Pilsner.  We can't wait to return to this Virginia Beach location and try both during next year's race weekend. The crew said they were mighty tasty!   THAT'S A WRAP! Thank you for listening!  We are looking forward to YEAR NUMBER 5 of the podcast because of your support!  Don't forget to follow us and tell us where to find you next on our website, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.  Also, check out our store on the website and get some swag, thanks to Pure Creative Apparel.  Thanks to PodcastMusic.com for providing the music for this episode, too!

Their brewing space and kitchen are located on the lower level.  The loft is on the second level and has indoor and outdoor space where you can enjoy food and beer.  They have a kitchen in the space where they make some tasty food, and we recorded our “hot takes” on tasty sandwiches and amazing soup.  Yum!  You must come to this place for a great meal if you are in Anchorage! DRINK Midnight Sun Brewing Company's beer is also very tasty.  We had several a few options from their menu and recorded our breakdown of the beverages while we were there.  Midnight Sun Brewing Company has a wide array of styles and the flavors do not disappoint!   We loved the “beer forward” board where, after you buy someone a beer, you can post a note telling everyone why you chose to pay it forward to that person.  We left a podcast sticker and paid it forward while we were there.  It will be great to find out who that beer goes to and which tasty brew that person enjoys! RUN While we were at the Anchorage RunFest, we had the pleasure of meeting up with two inspirational figures in the running community: Marko Cheseto and Bart Yasso.  We heard Marko give a talk at the pasta feed on Saturday of the race weekend.  We think the lessons he talked about are worth sharing and we do so from a bit of audio we captured at the luncheon.  We discuss these lessons and what they mean to us in running and life as well.  (Please forgive the audio.  A fire alarm was going off for much of Marko's speech.  His message is worth hearing and hopefully you can get past that to hear the meaningful message.  Thank you for hanging in there, if you can.) EAT Grizzly Dogs Food Truck was outside of King Street Brewing while we were in Anchorage for the Anchorage RunFest.  When we saw their menu, we couldn't help but try their signature item, "The Grizzly Dog" for 10.00.  They chop a reindeer sausage and smother it with sautéed onions, peppers and cheese sauce. Yum!  There are other items on their menu that piqued our interest, so… of course we definitely want to get back to it when we are in Anchorage again.   DRINK King Street Brewing is a big space with tasty beer on the menu and a beautiful view of the mountains in Anchorage.  You can sample their beer from any of the three stories while you look over into the brewing facility or you take a seat by a window and admire the beautiful Mountain View while having a cold one.  They have a wide variety of styles on their menu.  We talk about what we had while we were there.  We hope to get back to this neat space with so many friendly beer tenders.   THAT'S A WRAP! RUN Welcome to Anchorage RunFest! We recap Saturday's events on our trip this week, including the Expo and the Anchorage Mile.  The Anchorage Mile events included a Women's, Men's, Military, and Community Mile that went off throughout the morning.  We had a great time running the flat course that looped 1.5 times around a great park where an outdoor post-race event was held with tents set up with games for kids, a truck serving coffee, post-race pizza, and a hunting safety tips tent was set up.    Then we got the honor and privilege to hear Bart Yasso and World Record Holder for Double Amputees in the Marathon. Marko Cheseto motivate us and provide us with wisdom ahead of the longer races on Sunday.  Such great events to start the weekend off right!  We will recap our 5K experience on next week's episode, so stay tuned for more about this incredible weekend. It is our first back-to-live racing and traveling out of the state… can you tell we are excited? EAT Simon and Seafort's was our celebratory meal after all the running was done in Alaska.  It was amazing.  Pro tip: make a reservation!  If you are craving a classic steakhouse experience or a place to get authentic and delicious Alaskan King Crab when it is hard to come by, get to Simon and Seafort's.  Their ribeye is incredible, too! DRINK The last time we were in Anchorage, we explored some outstanding breweries. This time, we decided to indulge in amazing beverages from Anchorage Distillery. We had a Ghost Pepper Caesar and a Pickle Rick, but we did not stop there.  We also had a Porch Swing and a Barbie Girl.  Listen to the episode to discover who ordered what… And if you are ever in Anchorage, check out Anchorage Distillery! This week Coach Blu revisit the mayor of running, by interviewing Bart Yasso. Listen as we release this interview originally airing on June 6, 2016. Having thought we lost this episode, it was wonderful to rediscover, and as you're here, still very reverent. Bart Yasso joined Runner's World in 1987 to develop the groundbreaking Runner's World Race Sponsorship Program, creating a vehicle for Runner's World to work with over 7,000 races representing 4 million runners per year. Inducted into the Running USA Hall of Champions. Yasso also invented the Yasso 800s, a marathon-training schedule used by thousands around the world. What a pleasure it was for the SportsBoys team to have Bart Yasso (Mayor of Running) join us for this episode. For those that don't know who this man is, his resume is off the charts.  Bart started running in 1977 and was driven by his brother George Yasso.  As he got into running some of his accomplishments included participating in 5 Ironmans, running the Badwater (146 miles) in Death Valley, ran races on all 7 continents, cycled across the United States TWICE, and last but not least he is the founder of the Yasso 800's which are used today around the world to train for marathons.Having Bart on the podcast with us was such an eye opener and hearing his stories was such a pleasure.  This episode is longer than most of the Running Man segments but it could have gone longer.  We could have listened to him talk for hours.  I could keep typing more about him but I want everyone to listen to this great episode and how much fun it was for all of us.  Thank you again Bart for taking the time to join us.  Enjoy the show everyone!!

Dubbed the "Mayor of Running," Bart Yasso is one of the best-known figures in the sport, but few people know why he started running competitively, how it changed or rather saved his life. As the Chief Running Officer for Runner's World Magazine for over 30 years, Bart was the public face of Runner's World at races in the United States and abroad. Many runners have told Bart that he had the greatest job in the world, getting to travel to races around the world and meet runners of all abilities. He is one of the few people to have completed races on all seven continents from the Antarctica marathon to the Mt. Kilimanjaro marathon, but it's not the details of the races he recall it's the people he meets. During this interview he shares some of these memorable experiences along with how he feels about "Yasso 800s", a marathon-training schedule used by thousands around the world. One of the icons of the sport, Yasso has been inducted into the Running USA Hall of Champions, He has also completed the Ironman five times and the Badwater 146 through Death Valley and cycled, unsupported and by himself, across the country twice.it was an honor for me to speak with him. . Memorable quotes Never Limit where running can take you- physically, geographically, emotionally, spiritually, - the sport has done a lot for me There are no shortcuts in running, you have to do the hard work if you want to run faster You can get a lot more out of your body than you think and running proves that First thing I did when I walked into my office, was I said to myself, today I have to get someone who today isn't a runner, to run. I don't have a sign that says, Hi I'm Bart Yasso, tell me your running story, but people do come up and tell me their story Who would not want to run with a youngster, in their first race, and call that your job If a sport is powerful enough to suppress something as evil as apartheid, that's my sport I really wanted to travel the world and never thought that running would be the vehicle to take me where I ended up running races, it really was a dream come true The coolest thing in the sport of running, I got to physically witness, women coming into the sport .
