Ben and Tao notch their bows, load their trebuchets, unsheath their swords (thankfully not a euphemism) and lay siege to their enemies in Microsoft’s docuseries revival of historical RTS, Age of Empires IV. The duo flashback to memories of Age of Empires 2 and the role of games in education, query the environmental ramifications of forced epic downloads (that’s epic, not Epic), and debate whether the RTS genre is dead on its feet. They also explore at what point real world historical violence becomes acceptable for monetisation and entertainment in video games. Bur first, Tao decides, unilaterally, to make an apology. We run through the nominees for the upcoming The Game Awards, discuss outer space updates in EVE Online and No Man's Sky, and other games getting "whatever the *#%& that means" support for the foreseeable future like Titanfall and Overwatch. We also run through the new releases (both of them?) for the week, and we discuss the waning future of "triple-A" games ...or was that waxing? Have a listen! We recently chatted with Composer Sascha Dikiciyan also known as Sonic Mayhem about his incredible career in video game music composition for such titles as Quake II, God of War II, Borderlands, Mass Effect 3 and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. Sacha also recently released an original album titled, Doomsday featuring songs such as “Genesis”, “Futureland” (which features Power Glove), “Bleed Forever” (featuring Malukah), and more. There’s also an appearance by electronic rock artist Blue Stahli on the album. Sascha's work came to prominence when he sent a copy of his first CD "Methods of Destruction", an alternate Quake soundtrack, to id Software in 1996. As a result, they asked him personally to score the soundtrack for Quake II.
Jack Wall, Inon Zur, Austin Wintory, Sarah Schachner, Sascha Dikiciyan and David Housden appear on the Maestros of Video Game Music panel hosted by Emily this weekend in Seattle. David Hansen from the Cookie Brigade talks about the organization's role at PAX. You can support Level with Emily Reese on Patreon.

Instead of another set of movie reviews this week I decided to make things consistent and come out with something in it's stead. I have a couple video games to review this round as well as one anime. I start things off with Mass Effect 3, hopefully it's as spoiler free as I think it is but if anyone has problems with it you can send an email. I didn't address in detail the controversy with ME3's ending(s) I just discuss my interaction with them. Following ME3 is Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, a good game but I think it shows it's age just a little bit. Overall it has a fun story, but it has two failings that keep this title from being amazing. And lastly I try to talk about Ikki Tousen, but honestly I have little to no idea what it's about and that's after watching 6 episodes. So if it sounded disjointed that's because I was confused and lost. I doubt anyone will be surprised by the score. Opening and Closing Song- Leaving Earth by Clint Mansell, Christopher Lennertz, Cris Velasco, Sam Hulick, and Sascha Dikiciyan
