Test scores have gone from the eighth percentile to hovering around the 80s. We started the first early college high school program in Kentucky that's on a college campus. … We've had 500 kids go through that program, and 498 have earned a degree or are college right now. Crazy results from a population that's, you know, 70% free and reduced lunch, 18% homeless, and the vast majority first-generation college.”“I'm a big believer that your teachers live in the community. They're the people that are mostly talking to everybody at the grocery. And so if you can win your teachers over to your vision and your thinking and what you're doing, they'll sell it for you.”“You can't win everybody over in one day. In this episode, Kevin Stoller chats with Dr. Aspasia Angelou, a superintendent in Arizona. She highlights her role as a superintendent and the various initiatives she is leading in her school district. Dr. Angelou shares her background, growing up with Greek immigrant parents, and discusses how her early experiences shaped her drive to pursue education. She talks about her journey navigating educational challenges with limited family support. She also elaborates on the unique challenges of leading a unified school district without a high school and the legislative and logistical hurdles she faced in Arizona. She explains how she tackled these issues, including passing bonds for school funding and creating new high school facilities. Dr. Angelou discusses her approach to integrating innovative programs in her district, such as coding for young students, diverse extracurriculars like archery and agriculture, and designing a new high school from scratch with community input. Takeaways: There is always a way if you are determined enough. It's important to find a balance between honoring tradition and looking for innovation. It is critical for kids to understand technology, but it is also important that they have social experiences and play-based learning early. About Dr. Angelou: Dr. Aspasia Angelou is the daughter of immigrant parents and a native of Seattle, Washington, where she graduated from the University of Washington. She moved to Texas as an educator and teacher trainer in advanced placement, and then to Oklahoma as a school administrator for 8 years. She is passionate about creating equitable learning environments, opportunities, and outcomes for all students. Her entire career has been committed to serving in Title I urban schools. Trump hasn't released any medical records, but we're sure he's the most healthy entity in the universe. Melania Trump proclaims her alleged pro-choice stance in her upcoming memoir, and her felon husband said he "can't tell her what to do." Christofascist scumbag Ryan Walter, School Superintendent of Oklahoma schools, put out an RFP for the unconstitutional Bibles he wants to force upon school children, and the only ones that will qualify are the ridiculous Trump Bibles. Guess which party has a US Senate candidate who said the "bad guys" won World War II. California passed a law allowing Holland-like cannabis cafes. The 7th Circuit Court put a stay on Indiana's latest attempt to force a police state upon us. Ryan is vehemently against the concept of mixing Guinness Stout with Coca-Cola.

Earlier this week, Georgia's state schools superintendent Richard Woods put his foot in his mouth when he announced the state would no longer be funding AP African American Studies. Folks were outraged. Folks (the Republican governor included) wanted to know why he made that decision. Well, he reversed course (somewhat) but activists were still outraged, so I reached out to Atlanta-based public education policy advocate Mikayla Arciaga so she could explain why Woods' about-face isn't good enough. Donald Trump's gone from "anytime, anywhere" to "not gonna debate her" using "we can't even be sure she's the nominee" as their excuse. And it definitely is that - an excuse. One that makes no sense to use to back out of a date in mid-September and well after the DNC convention when whomever the nominee is will be known by then. Meanwhile, former Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan - a Republican - again considered who he'd choose between Donald Trump and whomever else was on the ballot and went away from his party to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris. Hear why.

The public school superintendent at the 4J School district in Eugene is under investigation, the Eugene Weekly is reporting. The school board hired Andy Dey in 2022 when similar allegations surfaced. SERIES 2 EPISODE 111: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Trump has never been truer to himself than after his solid but unspectacular victory over Nikki Haley in New Hampshire last night. His toadies like Marjorie Taylor Greene were whining within 10 minutes of the closing of the polls that the tally had been rigged against him. And he overshadowed his own victory by getting up and sweating through an angry, petty, vindictive "victory" speech in which he once again resorted to stochastic threats against Haley, this time promising he could reveal enough about her to get her investigated by "them." President Biden, meanwhile, won a non-primary primary in which he wasn't even on the Beauty Pageant Ballot, and he still got about 67% of the votes. And new polling in Pennsylvania - showing him up +8 over Trump there - was probably yesterday's REAL biggest presidential race story. Meanwhile it's Day 9 of Trump's Dementia Crisis. Not only are other Republicans noticing he's making less sense and seeming less present every day, but Trump is now blithering his way through teleprompter speeches and making sound effects on camera - all of which can be neatly folded into Biden Campaign Commercials. B-Block (21:00) IN SPORTS: Baseball's Hall of Fame elects new members - one too few, or two too many? Beltre was a lock but I have deep doubts about Helton and Mauer. And farewell to the greatest radio newscaster of all-time, Charles Osgood. (35:15) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Eric Adams plays Musical Chairs with actual chairs. Oklahoma's immoral School Superintendent gives a job to the immoral LibsOfTikTok witch. And Tiffany Cross finally breaks her silence on who knifed her in the back at MSNBC. The answer? Joey Scars himself. Joe Scarborough.
