Yeah, I know I only just published an episode of the podcast, but I thought I'd get this one out and into the world ASAP. Those Damn Crows, from Bridgend, Wales, have got a new album, their third, out right now. It's called Inhale/Exhale, and it's an excellent collection of melodic and emotional heavy rock ‘n' roll. It's riding high in the UK album charts too. In fact, when I speak to drummer Ronnie Huxford for this episode, the record is number 3 in the midweeks, quite remarkable for a band signed to Earache Records and without the clout of major label marketing. Which is why I'm pumping the episode out so quick after another one. You should go buy the record! Help nice guys finish first for a change! Well, not first – P!nk has got a record out – but certainly as high in the charts as possible! Dessutom gör Svempa Alveving comeback i podcastvärlden. On this episode of Vinyl Verdict, Bell, Jamie and Plouffe are joined by Adam Sondergard to talk about his pick, Sleep's Dopesmoker. Their third record, Dopesmoker was recorded in 1996 and was supposed to be their major label debut, but it all went wrong. When the band presented this as their album, London Records balked at releasing an album that was a single long song. It went unreleased until 1999, when Earache Records released it as Jerusalem in a slightly different configuration. This version of the album was released in 2003 by TeePee Records, and the exact version Adam brought was released in 2012 by Southern Lords Records. An extremely heavy doom metal/stoner metal album, Dopesmoker is around an hour at its shortest and 75 minutes at its longest, all in a single song. Will the boys drop out of life with song in hand, or will the Weedians proceed to hate on the album? Come along and find out!

Bloody hell, we're 50 episodes old. Which is quite amazing to me actually, so do allow me a moment or two to bask in the glory of the achievement. So much has gone on since this podcast began eleven months or so ago. A global pandemic. Several mental health meltdowns. Hospitalisation. And tonnes and tonnes of great conversations with musicians and bands. It's been a blast and this podcast has mattered, and does matter, enormously to me. Charge your glasses ladies and gentlemen, and all that exist in-between. Here's to another 50, at least. This milestone episode features a conversation with one Jay Buchanan, the voice of Rival Sons and a lovely, deep, soulful dude to boot. In case you don't know, Rival Sons are back in the UK any day now, to celebrate a decade of their 2011 album Pressure & Time, and so much of this conversation concerns Jay's memory of the making of said record. We talk about the band signing to Earache Records – an alarming decision at the time, and yet one which makes a lot more sense with hindsight. Touring with Judas Priest. The art of Storm Thorgerson. And then, out of nowhere, Jay lays down some cosmic truths, which is very much the sort of thing I'm into. Apologies for the excessive whittering about the ongoing drama about who did or who didn't eat curry and drink beer during the UK's 2020 lockdown. The conversation takes a while to hit it's stride. But we get there, so hang on in.While I'm here, I just wanted to say thank you to all of you, from the bottom of my heart, for tuning into this podcast. For rating, reviewing and subscribing. For telling your friends about it. To the PRs for arranging access to everyone I've spoken to on the podcast. And to the musicians themselves for speaking to me. As of next month, I've been a music journalist for 20 years – I've done a lot, written for all sorts of places, been all over the world, interviewed so many people I could have only dreamt of as a music obsessed teenager. And yet this podcast, as much as anything, is one of the things I've done that I'm most proud of.As I've said before, I'm gonna take a wee break from the podcast before I come back for the next shift. Once again, thank you. And do enjoy my interview with Rival Sons. The James McMahon Music Podcast is a Spoook Media production. [GROUP PICK] In 1969, Black Sabbath helped breathe life into a new form of rock called heavy metal--and in 1991, Sleep did the same thing to heavy metal, ushering in a bigger, jammier, and smokier incarnation called stoner metal. Although metal had reached it's peak in popularity in that time, for a lot of fans it had lost it's luster. Metalheads and stoners went underground, finding refuge in genres like doom metal and bands that just jammed hard in their friend's basements, beer-in-hand and bong smoke filling the rooms, like the metal they fell in love with--and Sleep was there to help. Their 1992 release "Sleep's Holy Mountain" was stoner metal's early magnum opus, and set a high bar for those that followed. With widespread critical approval and murmurings in the metal scene about them being the second coming of Black Sabbath, they should have complete artistic freedom on their next project... right? Well... although promised complete artistic freedom at first, once actually signed to London Records, the A&R member who had made the promise was replaced, and Sleep had a dilemma. For the past several years, they had been crafting an hour long epic, referring to it as "Dopesmoker" (due to the massive amounts of cannabis that were "critical" to the writing process) when performing it live and in 1996, freshly out of their deal with Earache Records, they were ready to record it. The band felt as if it was one song and needed to remain that way, without editing it down, but London Records didn't agree. They wanted something that was a little more marketable and had David Sardy create a mixed down 6 track version of it. Sleep and London Records stayed in a deadlock over this and the band actually broke up over the negative experience, Al Cicerno and Chris Hakius going on to create the transcendent band Om and Matt Pike creating High On Fire. But the album was destined to be set free and in 1999 a bootleg version called "Jerusalem" was released, the title based on what the band had been calling the song late in the process, with a Middle Eastern desert theme in mind. However, it was only the 6 track cut of the album, so finally in 2003 they released "Dopesmoker," the song in it's entirety.
