Today, let's acquire Wasim Munayyer's insights into the freight tech industry and its rising demand! Wasim shares his extensive experience in recruiting and logistics, the significance of industry knowledge for candidates entering tech companies, the positive momentum in freight tech-driven by factors like the re-industrialization of the United States, and his perspectives on recruitment trends! About Wasim Munayyer Wasim started his career working for technology recruiting firms in his home state of New Jersey as well as one of the largest firms in NYC. Later he joined Yusen Logistics, tasked with driving corporate recruitment for their North America business. It was in those years Yusen still had 3 divisions; Domestic Transportation, Freight Forwarding, and Contract Logistics. Making over 200 hires in 2 years across 3 divisions offered a thorough introduction into multimodal logistics. Wasim also lead corporate recruiting at Ports America for 2 years, adding a layer of knowledge in terminal/port operations. Being on the client end of the recruiting firm relationship for 4 years in this industry, Wasim realized that the industry was evolving into a space that would demand technology driven supply chain talent and that there was not a search firm out there which offered this blended niche talent. It might sound like a conspiracy to say that tech workers are subject to a rigged job market designed by billionaires for the consolidation of wealth and power. After 2+ years of continued instability, mass layoffs, a hellacious job market, wage stagnation, RTO mandates, and ever increasing workloads, we need no more proof that Big Tech bosses and their acolytes see workers as disposable cogs in a machine. Amy talks with Lauren Friedman, founder of Workforce Consulting, LLC, to unpack the hidden forces and power plays shaping the tech job market. With extensive experience in tech recruiting and workforce consulting, Lauren spills the tea on the machinations of Big Tech to hoard talent, knowledge, and money as a deliberate business strategy with disastrous consequences for millions of tech workers. Precarity has come to tech work, but you don't have to be a fish in a barrel. We have the individual and collective power to enact change and survive this together. Please support the show! In this episode, we are joined by three tech recruiting heavyweights from the banking, fintech and startup sectors to discuss the 2024 tech job market. They highlight the growing prevalence of contract roles, which can be just as lucrative as full-time positions, if not more. They give insights into what financial services firms are the best for tech professionals looking to pivot into banking, a trend we are seeing surge as a result of the softening tech labor market in recent years. Additionally, the recruiting experts forecast the impact of AI on tech jobs, as well as share their optimism in how they see the market panning out in 2025. They offer valuable advice for those looking to engage in a job search in the new year, emphasizing the need for adaptability in a rapidly changing landscape and building connections with recruiters who can support their efforts.
While 2024 was not as difficult than 2023 in terms of the number of technology job layoffs, there are still mixed signals in the job market. While tech unemployment remains low, anecdotally we are discovering that it's harder for many people to find a new job. What gives? Lucas Mearian, senior reporter at Computerworld, joins the show to discuss job hunting strategies, why companies continue to put obstacles in place on finding good candidates, and the impact of AI on the whole situation.
A study analyzes salary data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and identifies the highest-paying tech jobs across various states. In New Jersey, a database architect earns an average salary of $158,930, while a software developer in New York makes $150,020. California offers the highest pay for software developers at $173,780. Database architects rank as the highest-paid position in 19 states, computer network architects in 15 states, and software developers in 12 states. The findings reflect regional differences in tech job compensation and suggest growing demand for specialized roles as businesses increasingly focus on data-driven solutions. Jack Kelly and Rick Chen investigate whether recent news reports of tech jobs disappearing are accurate. Rick explains that the tech industry isn't one of the hardest-hit industries by job cuts and casts some doubt into the methodology of how reporters and their sources count jobs and job losses. He also shares how some companies have slowed hiring without enacting hiring freezes. Jack shares his reporting about the AI industry and why every company wants to say they are hiring AI jobs. He also covers the growing trend of companies outsourcing some jobs to other countries where compensation can be lower than in the U.S. and whether it should be a cause for concern for Americans. Finally, we examine why job interviews have gotten longer, especially in the tech industry, and how tech roles have changed to become more specialized. Jack and Rick then share advice about how professionals might avoid layoffs by returning to the office or find greater success in the job market by adjusting their expectations. https://bit.ly/blind-podcast https://www.forbes.com/sites/jackkelly/2024/09/23/why-the-once-mighty-tech-career-is-no-longer-safe/ https://www.wsj.com/tech/tech-jobs-artificial-intelligence-cce22393 https://www.forbes.com/sites/jackkelly/2024/09/24/american-consumer-confidence-plunges-as-the-job-market-weakens/

This week, Jason is joined by former investment trader on Wall Street turned personal finance content creator, Your Rich BFF aka Vivian Tu! Over the past few years, Vivian has gained popularity on social media for sharing financial advice on investing money and building wealth. Between TikTok and Instagram, she has generated over 6 million followers, who she calls the leftovers, for whom she wants to share the lessons she learned on Wall Street and offer her best personal finance tips and tricks to readers of all ages and demographics. Vivian gives insight to the three tips she will provide to her own children, what a 529 account is, her method up or out, how to improve your credit score, her time at University of Chicago and which lead to working on Wall Street, how her fiancé was able to land a job on Wall Street without attending a feeder school, what working on Wall Street was like and how she left to work at BuzzFeed. Vivian also reveals how quitting her full-time job allowed her 24/7 to work on her own personal business, how she was able to utilize a forecasting model to allow her to build her business, her various revenue streams, her understanding of social media's shelf life, how she's built trust with her audience, and her best and worst investments. Why did she decide to leave Wall Street? How is she creating content that is engaging to her audience? What is a stick and a yard? What is her opinion of billionaires? Vivian reveals all that and so much more in another episode you can't afford to miss!
