Meet Liberato Kani, a hip hop artist in Lima, Peru—or as he says, “the Andean Bronx”. At his concerts, a typical call and response you hear is "Quechua es resistencia": Quechua is resistance. Though Quechua is spoken by nearly ten million people, Peru's native language is at risk of dying off because of anti-indigenous prejudice. Liberato and other musicians like Renata Flores are here to save it—and restore a country's pride while they're at it. Want to talk more about the show? In this episode of the Tech Talks Daily Podcast, we sit down with Vijay Balasubramaniyan, the CEO and Founder of Pindrop, to discuss the alarming surge in AI attacks and the emerging threats posed by deepfake technology. With a staggering 450% increase in AI attacks in just the first four months of this year, the urgency to understand and combat these threats has never been greater. Vijay offers an in-depth analysis of the drivers behind this surge, including the rise of voice cloning tools and the innovative, yet dangerous, uses of synthetic media. We delve into the recent instances of deepfake technology being used in political campaigns and elections, such as the false audio tape of President Biden, and the potential impact these technologies could have on the upcoming elections. As the founder of the industry's first deepfake detection engine, Vijay shares the challenges faced in developing this groundbreaking technology and how it effectively detects synthetic media. He also highlights the crucial role of state and federal officials in defending against these threats, emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts to ensure the safety and integrity of our digital landscape. Vijay discusses the importance of concerted state-federal coordination in combating the spread of synthetic media. Vijay Balasubramaniyan is the CEO and co-founder of Pindrop. He first joined me on the podcast way back in 2019 for episode 86. I still recommend people listen to that episode. You will learn a lot about voice authentication. In 2021, Vijay returned for episode 193. We now have him three years later and the topic is new. Deepfakes and voice clones are common topics of discussion now, but Pindrop has been working on this for more than seven years. As a leading voice authentication solution, the team was intent to understand how voice clones could be used to impersonate a trusted user. Fast forward to 2023 and 2024 and they have a commercial product called Pindrop Pulse for deepfake detection. It is state of the art deepfake detection that is already being used by several large financial institutions. Results from customers deployed in 2023 show a 99% identification rate for voice clones created by the leading synthetic voice providers, 90% for zero-day voice clones from unknown providers, and both metrics come with a sub-1% false positive rate. These stats are essential as you will see lots of claims, but most are identifying a small subset of voice clone types or carry an impractically high false positive rate.
It has been a bad month for cybercrime. Yes, attacks are on the way up. Yes, they are still extorting money and causing infrastructure chaos. But there is a massive, shadow-busting spotlight on them right where they live and defense technology is advanced enough that they are hearing footfalls of law enforcement behind them. Recently a faked call from "President Joe Biden" to New Hampshire Democrats urged them not to vote in the state's primary. It only took a few weeks using AI-detection tools to not only identify what company provided the technology but also the user himself. For today's episode, we followed this theme and called one of our favorite technologists, Vijay Balasubramaniyan, CEO of Pindrop, whose technology can reliably identify AI-generated video and audio tech. Vijay would not confirm whether his product was used in this investigation. You will hear him demur that “we can't comment on an active investigation.” But he said it in such a way that I'm pretty sure it was. Also, he was interviewed for articles in Wired where he said his tool identified the call as a fake with a factor “north of 99 percent.” Independent researchers at first claimed that number was hard to believe, but after running their own tests grudgingly admitted, “Yeah, that's pretty close.” BTW, this episode is sponsored by Safety National Insurance --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/crucialtech/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/crucialtech/support

Sixty-three percent of respondents to a recent survey think resetting their password is a huge inconvenience and 14% would rather be stuck in rush-hour traffic than reset their password. And ironically, at one institution, fraudsters were able to pass knowledge-based question barriers 92% of the time, while actual customers correctly answered the questions only about 48% of the time, according to a survey by voice-based security, identity and intelligence platform provider Pindrop. These password challenges create a problem for the organizations that use them while not solving for fraud, contends Amit Gupta, vice president of product management, research and engineering at Pindrop, in this episode of “The Buzz” podcast. “Essentially, those organizations are adding the friction to solve a problem that this is not even a solution to,” Gupta tells Bank Automation News. “That's where voice absolutely helps, but more than that, an enhanced authentication solution can help alleviate that pain and that bad customer experience and in fact, convert that to a great user experience.” The $805.9 billion BMO leverages Pindrop to reduce its incidences of fraud, according to Victor Tung, U.S. chief technology and operations officer and chief information and operations officer for BMO Capital Markets. “We started leveraging Pindrop data and some consortium data, and we eventually plug that into our workflow,” Tung said. “We have some automation AI on top of it. We saw great, great uplift” in fraud detection. Pindrop's Gupta gives listeners a peak under the technology hood to explain how voice and voice data can reduce fraud.

The phone scam has been in the cybercriminal's playbook for decades, but the pandemic has lead to a sharp increase of these attacks. According to Eric Griffith from PC Mag, According to Eric Griffith from PC Mag, a well constructed phone scam can exploit more money than a scam conducted via email, social media, websites or apps. This becomes all the more concerning with our reliance on our phones in 2021, particularly when employees work from home. With the increase of remote working and fewer people in conventional workplaces, the need for communication tools has of course increased, but call centres are now sifting through more work than anybody could have anticipated. For some, call volumes increased by 800%, which has created intense work pressure for employees. Cybercriminals have now adapted their phone scam methods to specifically target call centres, leaving them vulnerable to attacks and placing huge responsibilities on customer service staff. The Evolution of the Phone Scam Voice phishing, or 'Vishing', is a form of social engineering attack that is primarily used to steal privileged credentials from corporations. The aim is to manipulate the target into exposing a weakness in the company, leading to data leaks or cybertheft. Joining us on in this podcast is Nikolay Gaubitch, Director of Research at Pindrop. SURPRISE BONUS! We chat to our friend, leading art advisor Simon Oldfield to discuss the art news hitting mainstream headlines this past week with digital artist Beeple selling his NFT artwork 'EVERYDAYS: THE FIRST 5000 DAYS' for an astonishing $69.3m at Christie's auction house. As a curator, advisor and lawyer fascinated by the convergence of art and technology, the emergence of NFTs into the mainstream is something Simon has predicted for many years. Twenty years ago he won a national award for his dissertation on the future of intellectual property in the Internet age:"Few people understood the internet, fewer understood my arguments and even those who did thought it was an irrelevance. Dismissed as solutions to problems that would never exist. Well, they were wrong, clearly! Today we are on the cusp on something extraordinary within the art world - the crossroads of art, law and tech. It’s an extremely complex world with major implications for the interaction of a global digital product and national laws. NFTs have enormous possibilities but potentially even greater pitfalls. After years of talking about digital art and its potential, often falling in deaf ears, it is literally all I have been talking about for the past month with #collectors, #artists, #lawyers, #fintech etc. Last week I gave a Zoom talk to over 200 people - heads of major law firms, CEOs, heads of banks etc. about NFTs and how art and the law around it is shaping the future. The wider potential and ramifications for NFTs (non-fungible tokens), the #blockchain, crypto currency, #smartcontracts, #cyrptography is extraordinary - in the literal sense of that word. We are living in the future."A qualified lawyer with a degree and post-graduate diplomas from the University of Exeter and the University of Oxford, Simon also oversees a thriving Curatorial arts and culture programme. Since opening the Simon Oldfield Gallery, he has exhibited influential artists of all disciplines, discovered emerging talent and presented landmark exhibitions, and is currently organising an exhibition of Digital Art. He regularly spearheads collaborations with commercial partners including Burberry, Soho House and Hauser & Wirth, alongside non-profit and philianthropic collaborations with public institutions including the Tate, Turner Contemporary and the Royal Academy of Arts. After COVID-19 shuts down flights to this remote island, citizens reimagine what their lives, their livelihood, and their home can be without tourism — and dream of what a post-pandemic paradise economy might look like.
