The psychology of this policing is like no other, and requires a particular set of skills. For Anthony Macklin, it suited his attention to detail and unrelenting work ethic. He was dedicated to his work, and to the force. But, when bureaucracy and the decisions of those above him meant an offender slipped through the net - he had to rethink his career. Anthony Macklin is a former Detective Inspector in the NSW Police. He worked tirelessly in the force, and took on several high ranking positions across a number of stations. Tonight's special guest is Carissa Kreiner from Cincinnati, Ohio, a survivor of sexual abuse as a child. "I suffered repressed memories from it," she says, "and just last year, with help from a therapist, was able to remember what happened to me." Since then she's finally been able to heal. Carissia grew up in an amazing church-going family. "I was sheltered, safe, loved and protected at all times." Her early life was 'perfect' .. until one day it wasn't. "In the blink of an eye everything changed. Literally overnight my childhood was ripped away from me. The safety, security and trust of our family was destroyed, and the innocence of a 9 year old little girl was gone." Carissa explains, "I used what had happened to me as a crutch." The syptoms included becaming sexually active, acting out and rebelling, quiting church, alcohol use and food. She was successful in her professional life, but her personal life and her emotional / mental state were in shambles. "Once I turned 33 I began realizing that my issues with not only alcohol and my weight, but also my insomnia, anxiety, anger, depression and lack of trust all stem from what I refer to as 'the unknown'." It was at this point she turned to psycotherapy. It took some doing but eventually there was a breakthrough. "For the first time, I was able to have closure in knowing that I faced my worst fear," Carissa says. "I had been sexually abused, in the home of a long time and trusted church family." That has meant everything. "Coming forward and telling my story is something that has been weighing very heavily on my heart for 6 months now." She goes on, "I want to be able to help others who are or have suffered from similar situations." We're happy to provide her the opportunity.

Tonight's special guest is Dave Beatty from Austin, Texas, a child abuse survivor who's particularly interested in raising awareness and breaking the silence over Domestic Violence. Dave grew up in a good family, but was at 5 1/2 years old he was sexually assaulted in a bathroom by a custodian at school. "I t was the worst pain I had ever felt in my life," he says. After he was finished the pedophile told him, "I know your parents and if you say anything at all I will kill them." Dave's teacher and his mother both knew something was wrong but assumed the child was coming down with something. "It changed my whole personality," Dave says. "I was scared to speak up anywhere. I felt like I didn't fit in. I felt alone even in a crowded room and to this day I have issues with it." He explains, "I have been silent about it all this time, and the shame and fear of telling anyone has played a big part of who I am today." Dave's struggled in his adult life with relationships, maintaining jobs and with raising his own children. Both he and his spouses experienced Domestic Violence, but Dave has a heart to help others. To do so, he started Riders Against Domestic Violence. Their mission is to organize and establish close community bonds, assist local centers and shelters get the funding they need to help the victims of abuse, and to bring awareness within the central Texas area of the seriousness of domestic abuse, and to encourage breaking the cycle. We're grateful Dave has chosen NAASCA to speak out about his own sexual assault for the first time.

Tonight's special guest is Brenda Plumley of Rome, NY, a returning NAASCA family member who's a survivor of severe child abuse. She credits her painting as being an important ingredient in her recovery. As a survivor and activist, Brenda expresses her recovery through her fine art, describing her work as Survivor of Childhood Sexual Abuse art. Brenda says she's grown alot since the last time she was with us (in 2013) but that there's still abuse going on in her family. "I realize though that there are symptoms that are life long but I can accept that because I know that I still can overcome," Brenda says. Since her last visit, Brenda confronted her brother. "I am amazed how powerful that was. When my brother moved back into the area I was devastated. I was taken aback by the effect his moving here had on me." She explains, "Now I find myself trying so hard to protect the children in my family, but they are in danger and CPS is not so good at protecting the children they are supposed to help." But perhaps things are looking up. "I finely found a good therapist that is familiar with an aspect of symptoms due to the type of abuse I experienced as a child. It makes it extremely difficult to interact with people. So I tend to seclude and have very few friends." We appreciate Brenda and her advocacy. "I am writing a book now and it will include my art work. I am also planning a support group for survivors in my area. I will be selling my art work for the first time this next summer and the proceeds will go toward helping other survivors." We hope Brenda will continue to engage with her NAASCA family.
