Speakers: Sean FitzGerald and Leanne Loranger “A bystander is a person who is present at an event or incident but does not take part.” What does bystander intervention mean and why does bystander intervention matter for physiotherapists? In late 2023 and early 2024, the College highlighted trends in allegations of sexual abuse and sexual misconduct received by the College of Physiotherapists of Alberta. One of the College's messages is that we need the help of all physiotherapists to disrupt these trends by intervening when they see conduct that is either clearly sexual misconduct or is tipping in the direction of becoming inappropriate. Further, the Standards of Practice and Code of Ethical Conduct call upon physiotherapists to act when they observe others acting in a racist or discriminatory manner towards others. In short, physiotherapists need to shift from witness to intervenor when they observe an incident or conduct in the practice setting that is not consistent with professional norms and expectations. In this podcast we discuss highlights and take away messages from the February 2024 Introduction to Bystander Intervention webinar the College hosted with the Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton. Do you know the 4Ds of bystander intervention and how to apply them? Check out this episode to learn more! We've talked a lot this season about the accelerating attacks on academic freedom, including the campaigns of repression against expressions of Palestine solidarity. Student groups, faculty and staff are increasingly surveilled, policed and targeted with spurious charges of antisemitism if they dare to voice support for Palestine. We often focus on faculty and students, but it's easy to forget how vulnerable staff are with few protections. This was the case at the University of Alberta, where after a post was shared by staff and volunteers at the U of A Sexual Assault Centre about a student-organized Palestine solidarity event, they were subjected to harrasment online, in person and via phone calls. And on January 23, they were fired from their jobs. On this episode, we talk to three core staff members of the Centre about the conflicting messages they received from university administration leading up to their firing, the harrasment they faced, and the toll all of this has taken. Thanks for listening! Content note: this episode addresses sexual violence. “Not every Ontario hospital has rape evidence kits,” reads a recent Toronto Star headline. “A proposed law would change that.” May is Sexual Assault Prevention Month, and the issue of sexual assault evidence kits not being available to survivors in all hospitals - in Ontario and throughout Canada - is an important one. But sexual assault is one of the most underreported crimes. Survivors may not feel safe enough to report in the first place. Evidence collection is just one piece of a complicated puzzle. What's the issue with sexual assault evidence kits in hospitals? And what's the deeper story about evidence, reporting, supporting survivors, and ultimately, ending sexual violence? Nicole Pietch, Writer and Advocate at the Ontario Coalition of Rape Crisis Centres (OCRCC), joins us to share her insights. Nicole Pietsch is a past counsellor at the Sexual Assault Centre of Halton and current Writer and Advocate with the Ontario Coalition of Rape Crisis Centres. OCRCC works toward the prevention and eradication of sexual violence. OCRCC's membership includes community-based sexual violence and rape crisis centres from across Ontario, offering counselling, information and support services to all survivors of recent and historical sexual violence, including sexual harassment and sexual trafficking. Since 1998, Nicole has assisted adults and youth living with violence, including immigrant and refugee women and survivors of sexual violence. Nicole has worked with youth survivors of violence who are incarcerated, those living in an institutional settings, and Deaf youth. Nicole's written work has appeared in York University's Journal of the Association for Research on Mothering, and the University of Toronto's Women's Health and Urban Life and Canadian Woman Studies/les cahiers de la femme. Of course, because our podcast concentrates on childlessness not by choice, I am always concentrating on the triggers that affect us. The negative things people say and do to highlight our childlessness, whether unknowingly or on purpose.   But research showed that there are of course sexual assault triggers, there are PTSD triggers, there are emotional triggers, and the list goes on. But then there are also what I call individual triggers. For instance if as a child, you were abandoned by your parents whether literally or figuratively; as an adult, you can have abandonment triggers where if you are stood up for a date or someone does not return your phone calls or no longer wants to be your friend, you may not handle the separation or feelings of separation very well.     Another ‘individual’ trigger might be having to endure the silent treatment as a child. If a parent were mad at you they would stop talking to you for a certain amount of time. As an adult, this silent treatment by a spouse or co-worker can create a triggering event. What I noticed with many of these examples were that they were created in childhood. This is where I believe our triggers as childless not by choice women may be different.  Our triggers happen once we are adults and hoping to be able to start a family, only to find out that we will never have the family we desired. We find out typically after a doctor’s appointment where we hear the bad news that we have been diagnosed with--insert diagnosis here--.   We then start to navigate a new journey, one we did not expect to have to. We slowly come to the realization that having children was never a guarantee. It took me a long time to come to that realization!   Yes, I know there are some women who knew when they were children that they would not be having any of their own. Typically because of something that happened to them as children or something they witnessed. Again, there is that common denominator: a childhood event.   But I still believe childless not by choice triggers are an adult event. So what are examples of childless not by choice triggers? These are based on personal experience as well as the experiences childless not by choice women have advised in our group, that they have experienced: Family members call out your childlessness in public by asking when you will be having children, advising you they are waiting for the next baby. Family and friends who allowed you to have a relationship with their children, and then out of the clear blue stopped the relationship from continuing. Family and friends who make passive aggressive comments about your childlessness. Strangers who ask if you have children and then prolong your response with their heartless or thoughtless commentary.   These are just a few examples.  But the fact is, when any of these things happen, depending on where a childless not by choice woman or man may be in their journey, this type of commentary can send someone into a tailspin lasting a day or more.   Those of us who have decided to deal with our triggers may not be sent into such a tailspin. We recognize the commentary as a pinprick to the heart versus a horse kick to the heart, as Jody Day so eloquently put it in episode 90: http://childlessnotbychoice.net/episode-90-my-interview-with-jody-day-founder-of-gateway-women/   So how does one get from a days-long tailspin to a temporary pin prick when dealing with triggers? I have said it in previous episodes, but here it is in a nutshell, based on a Google search:         ‘First step is to beware of your triggers. Next, recognize when the wave is beginning. Take some simple steps like stopping what you are doing breathe deeply for 5–10 breaths to regain some emotional control. You can teach yourself to limit your emotions.’--Google. Three questions to consider as you begin to face your triggers: What are your triggers? How do you feel when they take place? How long do these feelings last?     This is an important step. In fact, think about these three question above before a triggering event, when you are in a calm place.  When you do this, you have faced the monster!   Next step: Remember, there is no way to avoid the triggers. In fact, it is not healthy. If you feel you cannot face the trigger or triggers alone, please see a therapist. Once you make the decision to face these triggers, you will feel a weight lift off of your shoulders. You are basically admitting to yourself that you have triggers surrounding your childlessness, and what those triggers are.     When you admit these things to yourself, they are actually a strengthener to your psyche and even to your character. Remember, you cannot control how someone else treats you, but you can control your reaction to that treatment. When someone says or does something that could trigger you, and you have taken steps toward facing, recognizing, and dealing with said triggers; there is no way those triggers can affect you the same way as if you had not begun to deal with your triggers.   Can you see how important it is to face and deal with your triggers? It is very important. It will take time for you to get from days long tailspins to minutes long pinpricks, but it can happen. It all starts with you.  Isn’t that usually the case?      Be sure to check out the links I listed below.  They were used as research for this episode. *Content Warning: Discussions of Sexual Assault Welcome to another episode of Rebelliously Tiny. Here’s this week’s question: “I'm going to uni and one of my friends got raped at the beginning of the year. It makes me sick to my stomach that such a high percentage of girls at uni get raped and yet they refuse to do anything about it. She went to the college counselors and the police. Everyone made it seem like it was her fault. The garbage male got her extremely drunk and she thought they were friends, but then he took her to his room and assaulted her. I want to help but it makes me so mad I dont want to scare her.” This week, we talk with Crickett, the Public Education Coordinator at the Sexual Assault Centre of Hamilton, Ontario (SACHA), who helps us reflect upon and answer this question about sexual assault. It is a tough question that outlines the harsh realities of the prevalence of sexual violence in our culture. Our discussion with Crickett gives us hope as it highlights the important work being done to help support survivors and combat the systems and structures that enable this violence to happen. Crickett also shares tips for friends of survivors on how to be supportive, and explains the extreme importance of “loving, trusting, and believing” each other. We tackle topics such as how the media misrepresents and blames victims of sexual assault and the failure of institutions meant to protect them. Lastly, we highlight the importance of self-care for survivors, friends of survivors, and anyone practicing resistance in the current political climate. Today's episode is part one of a two-part series that I am doing on the impact of sexual assault and sexual abuse on fertility and infertility. In today's episode, I am pleased to welcome Erin Martin to the show. Erin has been working in the field of Sexual Assault Awareness, Education and Counselling for the past 13 years. She has an extensive background in Sexual Assault Awareness and Education through her work as a Public Educator and as the Director of Volunteer Services at the Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton. She has her Master's in Counselling Psychology and is currently working on her Ph.D. at the University of Alberta. In today's show, Erin and I define what Sexual Assault is, we discuss the issue of consent and how consent is defined in the Criminal Code of Canada, and we also discuss some of the most common and prevalent myths about sexual assault that permeate our culture. The purpose of today's episode is to provide a detailed background and thorough understanding of what behaviors and activities actually fall under the definition of sexual assault. We have an in-depth discussion about the most common myths about sexual assault and how these myths negatively impact survivors of sexual assault. We also discuss the issue of prevention "tips" and how the tips commonly directed towards women to prevent themselves from being assaulted provide a false sense of security and don't actually address the broader reality of the pervasiveness of sexual abuse in our culture. This episode lays the foundation for the conversation about the impact that sexual abuse can have on fertility and infertility that I focus on in part 2 of this series with Dr. Erica Berman. Topics discussed in today's episode How prevalent is sexual assault and abuse? What are the stats? We address the myth that if someone experiences sexual assault they are "damaged'" forever What is Sexual Assault and how is it different to Rape? What is Child Sexual Abuse, and how does this definition differ from how Rape and Sexual Assault are defined? Why do we have such a hard time accepting that the vast majority of sexual assaults are committed by trusted people that we know? What is Consent, and how is it defined in the Criminal Code of Canada? The many ways a person can say "no" without actually saying the word Although sexual assaults are often portrayed in the media as violent interactions by strangers, we discuss the most common tool that perpetrators use during a sexual assault, and it probably isn't what you think Why we have a hard time believing that sexual assault happens to men too and that it's not just a women's issue Why we hold on tightly to the belief that if someone was an offender or perpetrator of sexual abuse or sexual assault that we would know, and be able to pick them out of the crowd How the commonly held myths about sexual assault prevent us from fully empathizing with survivors and let the offenders off the hook Why survivor's of sexual assault isn't actually to blame regardless of whether they were drinking, what they were wearing, or what they were doing (or not doing) Resources mentioned Erin Martin | University of Alberta This Woman Just Explained Consent With a Perfect Metaphor Study Finds 95% of Child Sexual Abuse Cases Go Unreported | Erin Martin FFP 027 | The Impact of Sexual Abuse on Fertility and Infertility | Part 2 | Dr. Erica Berman Music Credit: Intro/Outro music Produced by Sirc of (The Nock)
