We can think of ethics as the principles that guide our behavior toward making the best choices that contribute to the common good of all. Who decides what's ethical or not? Let's find out from our guest Tom Hood, Executive Director, Mississippi Ethics Commission. What do they do? The Mississippi Ethics Commission has four main areas of authority under four separate laws:The Ethics in Government Law – prohibits public officials and employees from having economic conflicts of interest. The Open Meetings Act – requires governmental boards and commissions to meet in public, unless they enter executive session by following a specific procedure for limited reasons. The Public Records Act – ensures the public can inspect and copy most government documents. The Campaign Finance Law – authorizes the Ethics Commission to issue advisory opinions to candidates about the use of campaign funds. What do they Don't DoUnethical Personal Conduct Criminal Activity ElectionsJudgesGeneral Questions of Government LawLawyer EthicsU.S. House Ethics Committee Chairperson is our own Rep. Michael Guest, R-Miss., The Ethics Committees are unique among all House and Senate committees in that they are bipartisan committees. On February 3, 1993, the Standards of Ethical Conduct for Employees of the Executive Branch, issued by the Office of Government Ethics for codification at 5 C.F.R. Part 2635, replaced the many individual agency standard of conduct regulations with a uniform set of standards applicable to all employees of the executive branch.Because they are intended to answer questions about the ethical conduct of more than a million individuals employed by more than 100 different Federal agencies, the Standards of Ethical Conduct are detailed. Sacrilege From Greed | 1 Samuel 2:13-17

Have you checked your greed lately? Welcome to the Daily Devo. I am Vince Miller. This week, we are in 1 Samuel 2. Chapter 2 contrasts two families—one who stands with God and one in defiance. Today, I will read verses 13-17. The custom of the priests with the people was that when any man offered sacrifice, the priest's servant would come, while the meat was boiling, with a three-pronged fork in his hand, and he would thrust it into the pan or kettle or cauldron or pot. All that the fork brought up the priest would take for himself. This is what they did at Shiloh to all the Israelites who came there. Moreover, before the fat was burned, the priest's servant would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, “Give meat for the priest to roast, for he will not accept boiled meat from you but only raw.” And if the man said to him, “Let them burn the fat first, and then take as much as you wish,” he would say, “No, you must give it now, and if not, I will take it by force.” Thus the sin of the young men was very great in the sight of the Lord, for the men treated the offering of the Lord with contempt. — 1 Samuel 2:13-17 Unethical Conduct In The Priesthood This text reveals a troubling reality of religious corruption and entitlement within the priesthood. Eli's sons, who served as priests, abused their authority for personal gain. Their actions weren't just selfish; they were sacrilegious. While priests were entitled to a portion of the sacrifices after they were presented, the sons of Eli went far beyond what was acceptable. Instead of honoring God's regulations, they exploited their position to snatch the best portions of the sacrifices being prepared by the worshippers. Imagine making preparations for your best offering to God, only to have it forcibly taken by one of the priest's servants. For worshippers, these sacrifices were deeply meaningful acts of devotion. Yet, Hophni and Phinehas, Eli's sons, showed no regard for the sacredness of these offerings. They intruded on families while their meat was cooking, taking what they desired and even demanding raw meat for themselves before the fat was burned—an act directly contrary to God's instructions. Their behavior was reprehensible, driven by greed and a blatant disregard for God. Unregulated Selfishness Can Become Sacrilegious Greed So, what do we learn? Every man, including spiritual leaders, can succumb to the temptation of selfish gain. If unchecked, it can spiral into insatiable narcissism and sacrilege, elevating oneself above God. Today, let's examine our own lives. Are there areas where selfishness or greed are taking root? Left unaddressed, they can lead us down a path of wickedness. Let's strive to regulate our desires and align them with God's will, guarding against the allure of selfish gain. #GuardAgainstGreed #SacrilegeInService #SpiritualLeadership Ask This: Reflect on a time when you were tempted to prioritize personal gain over honoring God and others. How did you navigate that situation, and what lessons did you learn from it?  In what areas of your life do you see the potential for selfishness or greed to creep in? How can you actively guard against these tendencies and align your desires with God's will? Do This: Check your greed today. Pray This: Lord, help me to recognize and resist the allure of selfish gain, guiding me to honor You in all that I do. Grant me the strength and wisdom to align my desires with Your will, that I may serve You faithfully and with integrity. Amen. Play This: Greed.

Does Counseling Cause Chaos? |Let's Discuss “Bad Therapy”Psychotherapists are out in the world to help people, right? But what if there are Licensed Psychotherapists out in the world who are making people's mental health problems worse? Well, that's what author and journalist Abigail Shrier postulates in her book “Bad Therapy – Why kids aren't growing up.” This book accuses therapists of harming people and children by• The rise in accessibility of treatment isn't producing positive outcomes• Not informing parents what is going on with their kids in therapy• Not telling kids the risks of therapy, and that it can do harm• Talking about feelings which can lead to increased rumination, anxiety and depression• Recommending therapy to those who don't need it• Keeping people in therapy to keep an income stream for themselves• Avoiding helping the truly mentally ill• Selling a generation on the idea that everyone is sick• Telling people everyone has trauma, when it's really just “bad memories”• Strong-arming their suggestions and judgments onto children Full Interview Links:Joe Rogan's Podcast Interview with Abigail Shrier: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z72hgYk-5iIUnHeard's Podcast Interview with Abigail Shrier: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJMhyG50N-Y&t=1459sLinks and ResourcesMy Counseling Website: www.lokahicounseling.comMy Professional Disclosure FormContact Abigail at https://www.abigailshrier.com/WACs and RCWs for Mental Health Counselinghttps://doh.wa.gov/licenses-permits-and-certificates/professions-new-renew-or-update/mental-health-counselor/lawsTo File a Complainthttps://doh.wa.gov/licenses-permits-and-certificates/file-complaint-about-provider-or-facility/health-professions-complaint-processLinks and Resources American Counseling Association Code of Ethical Conduct for Counselors: https://www.counseling.org/resources/... Speakers: Sean FitzGerald and Leanne Loranger “A bystander is a person who is present at an event or incident but does not take part.” What does bystander intervention mean and why does bystander intervention matter for physiotherapists? In late 2023 and early 2024, the College highlighted trends in allegations of sexual abuse and sexual misconduct received by the College of Physiotherapists of Alberta. One of the College's messages is that we need the help of all physiotherapists to disrupt these trends by intervening when they see conduct that is either clearly sexual misconduct or is tipping in the direction of becoming inappropriate. Further, the Standards of Practice and Code of Ethical Conduct call upon physiotherapists to act when they observe others acting in a racist or discriminatory manner towards others. In short, physiotherapists need to shift from witness to intervenor when they observe an incident or conduct in the practice setting that is not consistent with professional norms and expectations. In this podcast we discuss highlights and take away messages from the February 2024 Introduction to Bystander Intervention webinar the College hosted with the Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton. Do you know the 4Ds of bystander intervention and how to apply them? Check out this episode to learn more! In this lecture, we delve into the profound wisdom of acting without scruple and its transformative power in our lives and character development. As Freemasons, we are reminded of the importance of living with integrity and honor, even when faced with challenging decisions. The principle of acting without scruple stems from the traditions of operative stonemasonry, where adhering to high standards of craftsmanship and integrity was paramount to ensure the safety of those who would inhabit the buildings constructed.Today, in speculative Freemasonry, acting without scruple translates into living by our values, standing firm in our convictions, and acting with honesty and compassion. We are called to uphold moral and spiritual integrity, even in the face of adversity or temptation. This principle requires courage and commitment to doing what is right, whether it involves speaking out against injustice or upholding ethical standards in the workplace.Living according to the principle of acting without scruple may present challenges, including resistance from those who do not share our values or the temptation to compromise integrity for short-term gains. It is crucial to reflect on our values, motives, and surround ourselves with like-minded individuals who support our commitment to integrity and honor.By consistently acting without scruple, we experience a profound transformation in our lives, gaining confidence in our decisions, building authentic relationships based on trust and respect, and finding fulfillment in making a positive impact in the world. Embracing this principle with courage and conviction not only fulfills our obligations as Masons but also as individuals committed to upholding moral fortitude and making a difference in the world. This journey of living without scruple leads to personal growth, strengthens our fraternity, and contributes to creating a better world for all, reflecting the timeless wisdom of our craft and leaving a lasting legacy of goodness and light.Show Notes:Watch as a Video on YoutubeRead original article on SubstackFollow the Daily Masonic Progress Podcast on SpotifySubscribe to the Daily Masonic Progress Podcast on Apple PodcastsRead and subscribe to Daily Masonic Progress on SubstackWatch and Subscribe Youtube

We explore the impact of significant developments like the Mayor's Courts, the Regulating Act, the Charter of 1753, and the Indian High Courts Act of 1861. After India gained independence, the All India Bar Committee emerged as a significant force in advocating for a unified legal profession. The podcast analyzes the All India Bar Council proposal and its influence on shaping the Advocates Act of 1961. This landmark legislation simplified and unified the legal profession, established the Bar Council of India as the highest authority, and set comprehensive rules and principles for legal practice. Ethics and professional conduct are of utmost importance for lawyers. The podcast emphasizes the significance of ethical standards in the legal profession, including responsibilities towards clients, the court, opponents, and the public. We explore the Bar Council of India rules that govern ethical conduct, safeguard the rights of advocates, and ensure impartiality in upholding the rule of law. With a focus on the role of lawyers in the judicial process, the podcast highlights the multifaceted responsibilities they shoulder. Lawyers are instrumental in providing legal advice, drafting legal documents, and facilitating litigation and lawmaking. They act as guardians of the rule of law, ensuring equal treatment, and fairness in the legal process. Their role is vital in upholding dignity and promoting peace and order in society. Throughout the episode, Kapil Balhara emphasizes the importance of ethical conduct for lawyers. Upholding the trust between litigants and courts, adhering to professional standards, and ensuring justice is delivered with integrity are the key principles that govern the legal profession. Title: Leviticus 19: A Call to Holiness and LoveIntroduction: Leviticus 19 presents a profound chapter within the Old Testament, offering a comprehensive guide for righteous living and ethical conduct. Positioned amidst the legal code of the Mosaic Law, this chapter encapsulates essential principles that continue to resonate with believers today. Let us explore the rich meaning behind Leviticus 19 and its relevance for shaping our lives with holiness, love, and justice. The Pursuit of Holiness: Leviticus 19 opens with a divine commandment: "Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy" (Leviticus 19:2). The call to holiness establishes a central theme throughout the chapter, urging the Israelites to reflect the character of God in their daily lives. It emphasizes the importance of moral purity, integrity, and reverence for God.Ethical Conduct and Social Responsibility: The subsequent verses of Leviticus 19 provide a comprehensive guide to ethical conduct, addressing a wide range of areas, including relationships, business practices, justice, and personal integrity. The chapter serves as a moral compass, guiding believers in their interactions with God and fellow human beings.Honoring Parents and Observing the Sabbath: Leviticus 19:3 highlights the importance of honoring one's parents, emphasizing the value of familial relationships and obedience. Additionally, it reminds believers of the significance of observing the Sabbath—a day of rest and worship—to honor God's commandments and find spiritual renewal.Care for the Vulnerable: Leviticus 19:9-10 underscores the importance of compassion and justice by instructing farmers to leave the edges of their fields and the gleanings for the poor and the foreigner. This demonstrates the biblical principle of caring for the vulnerable and exemplifies the concept of "loving your neighbor as yourself."Ethical Business Practices: Verses 11-13 stress the importance of honesty and integrity in business transactions. The passage prohibits stealing, lying, and deceiving others. Instead, it encourages just and fair dealings that reflect the righteousness of God.Loving Others: Leviticus 19:18 famously encapsulates the essence of the chapter, stating, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." This commandment emphasizes the importance of selfless love, kindness, and respect towards others, regardless of their social status, ethnicity, or personal beliefs.Justice and Impartiality: Leviticus 19:15 warns against showing partiality or perverting justice. It demands that the Israelites treat both the poor and the rich with fairness and impartiality, thereby reflecting the character of God, who is just and merciful.Sexual Morality: Leviticus 19:29 and subsequent verses address issues of sexual morality, including the prohibition of prostitution and incestuous relationships. These guidelines remind believers of the importance of purity and sexual integrity within the framework of God's design for human relationships.Relevance for Today: While the Mosaic Law was given to the ancient Israelites, Leviticus 19 continues to hold relevance and significance for believers today. Physiotherapists have fundamental obligations to provide safe, competent, effective care to their clients, and to provide for continuity of care whenever a therapeutic relationship has been established. The concept of a duty of care underlies long standing professional norms and expectations. In this episode we discuss recurring challenges that physiotherapists may encounter related to the duty of care that they have towards their clients, including: ·       The physiotherapist's responsibility to maintain the therapeutic relationship and take responsibility for conflict resolution. ·       Challenges related to discharging patients who still require treatment, but with whom the physiotherapist is unable to maintain a therapeutic relationship, and the physiotherapist's responsibility to arrange for continuity of care. ·       Expectations related to informed consent and shared decision making such as the requirements of avoiding providing inappropriate or ineffective treatment and respecting the patient's right to make decisions about their own care. We also discuss how to navigate the challenging situations that can arise when a patient declines or refuses treatment and the physiotherapist thinks the patient's choice of action is unsafe. The Standards of Practice and Code of Ethical Conduct set out the expectations for physiotherapists related to duty of care. In this episode we elaborate on those expectations and discuss real world scenarios that physiotherapists may encounter from time to time. The process the College used for revising the Standards and the data considered when making the proposed changes is described in detail. Each regulated physiotherapist is responsible for their conduct and for meeting the expectations articulated in the Standards and other foundational documents. Defenses like “I didn't know the rules,” “my colleague said it was OK,” or “those were the rules when I graduated” are not acceptable, so take the time to get to know the Standards and watch for changes in the future. President Cyril Ramaphosa tabled the fourth part of the State Capture Inquiry's report with Parliament on Tuesday - and, in a turnaround from the African National Congress's (ANC's) previous stance, affected committees will deal with the published parts of the report. "Parliament confirms receipt of Part 4 of the Report of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into allegations of State Capture from the President of the Republic today. Previously, the President submitted Part 3 of the Commission's Report, which Parliament is in the process of implementing," reads a statement from Parliament's spokesperson Moloto Mothapo. "Part 4 of the Report comes at the time Parliament is finalising the process of establishing appropriate systems and mechanisms, consistent with its constitutional function, to oversee the implementation of the report. The report will be published in the Announcements Tablings and Committees (ATC) of Parliament for the attention of Members. "The Rules Committee, on the other hand, will at the appropriate time determine how best to process the report and the accompanying implementation plan once they are submitted on or before August by the President." Mothapo said, "In the interim, committees of Parliament will engage with the publicly available reports in their ordinary course of business." News24 reported on Monday that influential ANC MP, chair of chairs Cedric Frolick, and ANC MP in National Council of Provinces, Winnie Ngwenya, have been referred to Parliament's Joint Committee on Ethics and Members' Interests for their part in the Bosasa-scandal. This was after a legal opinion from Parliament's legal services sat on Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula's desk for almost two months. Democratic Alliance deputy chief whip Siviwe Gwarube's attempts to get Parliament to deal with the published reports, as it pertains to Parliament, were stonewalled by senior ANC MPs on the National Assembly Programming Committee. The ANC alleged Parliament could only deal with the full report after Ramaphosa tabled it, with an implementation plan four months after its completion. This meant that Parliament would only look at it in mid-October. The legal opinion did not advise this, and neither did Ramaphosa when he tabled part three of the report in March. In another statement, Mothapo confirmed that Parliament is in "the process of establishing appropriate systems, consistent with its constitutional function, to process and oversee the implementation of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into State Capture Report". He also confirmed the Joint Committee on Ethics and Members' Interests "has been requested to investigate possible contraventions of the Code of Ethical Conduct and Disclosure of Members' Interest for Assembly and Parliament Council Members". "This applies only to current members who were serving in Parliament when any alleged transgressions took place." He didn't name Frolick and Ngwenya. Frolick has recently been elected as co-chair of the ad hoc committee that will exercise oversight over the state of disaster after the floods in KwaZulu-Natal, despite the Zondo cloud over his head. Mothapo said that, while the official submission of the reports is awaited, Parliament has already started working on systems based on publicly available copies of the reports. "Parliament's research department is currently processing the reports, summarising them into, among others, action plans to improve Parliament's execution of its constitutional mandate consistent with the corrective measures contained in the reports. "Parliament's Legal Services department has conducted an analysis of the reports and has generated a legal opinion, proposing a process Parliament should follow in dealing with the reports once officially submitted." He said Parliament had an obligation to implement corrective measures from the commission's reports, with regard to areas where Parliament had a role to play. "Similarly, Parliament has a responsibility to...

If you’ve been working as a coach or a consultant for any length of time you have run into situations where you have to make a decision about what the “right” thing to do actually is. Sometimes, it is pretty obvious, sometimes, not so much. Some professional organizations have established standards that credentialed professionals promise to adhere to. The International Coaching Federation has the ICF Code of Ethics (https://coachingfederation.org/ethics/code-of-ethics), the Project Management Institute has a Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct (https://www.pmi.org/about/ethics/code). In January of 2020 the Agile Alliance launched the Agile Coaching Ethics Initiative. In this episode, Jody and Leanne discuss what professionalism means and the expectations that arise as part of being a member of a self-regulating profession.   Professionalism is a topic of conversation that arises frequently within the physiotherapy profession. Organizations such as entry to practice education programs, accreditation organizations, and regulators all agree that professionalism matters, but defining what is or is not professional is challenging. We discuss how attitudes and beliefs about professionalism often stem from messages internalized long before a person entered the profession. Professionalism is also complicated by the fact that as society’s norms and expectations change, perspectives about what constitutes professional behaviour also change.   In some ways, it is easier to define what it means to be a member of a self-regulating profession. Jody and Leanne discuss what’s expected when an issue is brought to a physiotherapist’s attention, and what to do when a physiotherapist notices a peer isn’t meeting expectations. When do physiotherapists need to call on each other to meet expectations, and when is it appropriate to contact Physiotherapy Alberta about a fellow physiotherapist’s practices?   Resources: Code of Ethical Conduct: https://www.physiotherapyalberta.ca/physiotherapists/what_you_need_to_know_to_practice_in_alberta/code_of_ethical_conduct Standards of Practice: https://www.physiotherapyalberta.ca/physiotherapists/what_you_need_to_know_to_practice_in_alberta/standards_of_practice Links: Subscribe on Apple Podcasts Subscribe on Google Play Subscribe on Spotify

Advertising is a challenging topic within physiotherapy regulation, due in part to the tension between the need to promote the services offered and the need to conduct ourselves professionally. In this episode Jody and Leanne talk about common advertising problems including the use of the title ‘doctor,’ comparative and superlative statements, and misleading advertising.    Along the way we talk about the need to avoid a race to the bottom when it comes to advertising, and the importance of making sure that the advertisements for your business are consistent with the Standards and Code of Ethical Conduct, even when (especially when) you hire advertising professionals for help.    The key point here is that physiotherapist advertisements promote a health professional’s services. The purpose is to inform members of the public about services that are available in their community, not to engage in unseemly aspects of advertising, such as bait and switch tactics, in order to get business in the door.     Resources: https://www.physiotherapyalberta.ca/physiotherapists/what_you_need_to_know_to_practice_in_alberta/standards_of_practice/advertising https://www.physiotherapyalberta.ca/physiotherapists/what_you_need_to_know_to_practice_in_alberta/code_of_ethical_conduct Links: Subscribe on Apple Podcasts Subscribe on Google Play Subscribe on Spotify

In this episode, we share a conversation between Reverend Seifu Anil Singh-Molares, and Lucy Abbott Tucker. This conversation was a livestreamed event from SDI, which we are calling Digital Tonw Halls, and you can find the recordings of these videos by visiting the website – sdicompanions.online, or by searching for sdiworld on Youtube. In thier conversation over Zoom, Lucy shares some stories from her life that led her into her calling as a spiritual director and supervisor to spiritual directors, beginning with a mystical experience growing up in New York, and how that experience has motivated Lucy’s lifelong work. Lucy Abbott Tucker is one of the founders of Spiritual Directors International and she led the task force to write and establish SDI’s official Guidelines for Ethical Conduct for all spiritual directors, regardless of culture or tradition. She has worked in adult formation and the preparation of people for the ministry of spiritual direction for 35 years. Lucy has led in retreats and workshops throughout the United States, Europe, Australia, and Canada.  --- Support for this podcast comes from SDI Press – announcing its newly published book, Spiritual Direction Supervision: Principles, Practices, & Storytelling by Lucy Abbott Tucker. An innovative, full-color workbook designed to support the care and growth of your spiritual companionship practice, representing the best thinking of master teacher Lucy Abbott Tucker. We invite you to explore her principles, practices, and stories as you deepen your own approach to spiritual direction, companionship, and the supervision process. Learn more at sdistore.org.   --- As part of our release for Lucy’s workbook, SDI is offering an online supervision workshop with Lucy Abbott Tucker this June. This 4-part introduction to spiritual direction supervision will touch on all the key themes that make supervision an essential part of the training and on-going professional development of any spiritual companion. And at $79 for SDI members, it’s a remarkable bargain that will introduce participants to key concepts and then give them the chance to put these principles and practices into action in small groups. We call it “A Taste of Spiritual Direction Supervision” and we hope you will consider joining us.

Michael Madary (along with fellow philosopher, Thomas Metzinger) penned the first Code of Ethical Conduct for virtual and augmented realities. Blake Collier and Matt Ruff explore the ethics of technology and what it looks like to attempt to prophecy all of the potential negative elements of an industry that is still largely in its infancy. We dig into subjects like avatar ownership, failures at switching between “realities,” and embodied persuasion via advertisement and other embedded messages. We then dive into some of the potential negative ramifications of VR/AR for governments and militaries along with the more intimate elements of interpersonal interactions online. This is a fascinating and important discussion for our times. We hope you enjoy.  Michael Madary is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at University of the Pacific. He specializes in the ethics of emerging technology as well as cognitive science. Madary co-authored the first code of ethics for immersive technology. His first book, Visual Phenomenology, was published in 2017 with MIT Press.

This episode was inspired by Don Cherry’s infamous comments on Hockey Night in Canada and the public and media reactions to those comments. Moyra McAllister, Physiotherapy Alberta’s Complaints Director, joins the podcast to talk about communication concerns and on-duty or off-duty conduct that can lead to patient complaints. Like George Bernard Shaw said, “the single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.” Communication is at the core of nearly every complaint that Physiotherapy Alberta receives. Patients expect that communication with their physiotherapist will be respectful and professional. Physiotherapy Alberta and employers alike have expectations about what is or is not acceptable on-duty conduct. The expectations outlined in the Standards of Practice represent the minimum requirements, but employers can set the bar higher. That’s not to suggest that the Standards set the bar low, they are just the minimum expectations that all physiotherapists must meet. We start the episode by discussing those expectations. But do those expectations apply when the physiotherapist is off-duty? Are physiotherapists ever really off-duty? In the latter half of the episode we address that topic and highlight interesting conduct cases where off-duty conduct led to complaints and sanctions against regulated professionals. THIS WEEK'S INTERVIEW If you are a regular listener, you know that USA Gymnastics is embroiled in a massive sexual abuse scandal that was first brought to light by the Indianapolis Star in the summer of 2016.  Today’s show will focus on an incident that illustrates the compounded fear athlete victims have when their life’s work is at stake. On Sunday, August 24, 2014 after the P&G Championships in Pittsburgh, Olympic hopeful Steven Legendre and his wife Alaina went to the hotel bar. It was there that Alaina alleges U.S. Olympic Training Center men’s coach, Vitaly Marinitch sexually assaulted her. Since the incident isn’t mentioned as a catalyst for Vitaly's stated voluntary resignation, the Legendres have decided to publicly share their story to offer greater transparency to the sport they love and have dedicated their lives to. Alaina Legendre (née Williams) was a U.S. trampoline national team member for six years and national champion several times over.
