Smith informs Joe about the church purchasing the Kirtland Temple from the Community of Christ. Joe refers back to this South Park episode and summarizes the beginnings of the BOM for anyone who doesn't know. Smith mentions this part from the Tim and Eric movie. Joe points out this series of Behind the Bastards podcast episodes. The guys have both heard Teller's voice. Here's a link to an unvetted podcast ep with Teller as a guest. The guys discuss Neil Hamburger's voice and his performance as Toby Determined on Gravity Falls. Smith provides his idea of some of the original text before it was edited. Joe complains about how expensive everything is in Aspen, Colorado. Smith tells about his weiner dog protecting him against a Siberian Tiger on TV. Joe complains about the one and only segment he watched on the History Channel show, Strange Evidence. His description reminds Smith of a classic segment on T&E. I visited Russia after their war with Ukraine started. I traveled into the country & tracked Siberian tigers in what was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. After returning, integration came with some challenges & my good friend Jared Nations asks some questions to allow me to process more thoroughly. Enjoy.
On Christmas Day in 2007, Carlos Sousa Jr. and his friends Paul and Kulbir Dhaliwhal decided to spend their afternoon at the San Francisco Zoo. One of the last exhibits they wanted to see before the zoo closed that night was the zoo's 4-year old and 243 pound (110kg) Siberian Tiger, Tatiana. The boys just didn't realize exactly how close they were going to get. This case was extremely rare, especially in an AZA-accredited institution. Over 6,000 kilometres from Moscow in the Far East of Russia is the remote and harsh habitat of the Amur Tiger - also known as the Siberian Tiger. It is one of the largest cats in the world, and there is estimated to be around 400 remaining in the wild. The largest threat for the Amur tiger is poaching - but there's really only one way to truly understand how and why poachers poach - and that's to talk to the poachers directly. And so American wildlife criminologist, Allison Skidmore had a proposal for her university - to go and live in these hunting communities in Far East Russia for months at a time to find out first-hand the REAL extent of the threat of poaching for the Amur Tiger. Is it a crazy story? Absolutely. It's a story that shows true courage and an unrelenting ambition to learn more about this threat so conservation actions can be taken in the future. I choose you: Writing wedding vows with Tim and Jade Weddings have been disrupted during Covid, but despite the hurdles, many couples have still been tying the knot in South Australia, including Tim and Jade, our special guests in this episode of The Adelaide Show. They got married last year in an outdoor ceremony and their vows were so different from the ones usually heard, that we asked them to join us to share their thinking and writing process - and to check on their marriage progress, to date. Tim and Jade are both vegan, so for the SA Drink Of The Week this week we chose one of their go-to wines. It's made by Yalumba. And in the Musical Pilgrimage, we finish off with a live performance of a song by Siberian Tiger, from the radionotes podcast with John Murch (a superb, South Australian podcast). You can navigate episodes using chapter markers in your podcast app. Not a fan of wine? You can click next to jump to the next chapter in the show. We're here to serve! Oh, and here's our index of all episode in one concise page Running Sheet: Writing wedding vows00:00:00 Intro Introduction to the show. 00:02:53 SA Drink Of The Week This week's SA Drink Of The Week is a 2019 Yalumba Bush Vine Grenache from the Barossa Valley. We chose it because it's one of Tim and Jade's go-to red wines, fitting in with their vegan lifestyle. 00:09:23 Writing wedding vows One of the great writers and wits, Oscar Wilde, references marriage in many books and plays and two of these quotes seem to be contradictory: The proper basis for marriage is a mutual misunderstanding. The other: Ultimately the bond of all companionship, whether in marriage or in friendship, is conversation. Back in October last year, 2021, a friend of mine, Tim Whiffen, married Jade Schulz, down on the outskirts of McLaren Vale at McCarthy's Orchard. What struck me about this wedding more than any others I had attended, was the quality of the writing in the service and in the vows. Of course, when you have two philosophers getting married, I guess one's expectations should be high. Jade and Tim, welcome to The Adelaide Show podcast. Let's deal with a few Oscar Wilde quotes. Tim, if you had to choose, which would be the better basis for marriage: mutual misunderstanding, or conversation? Jade, your thoughts? Another great writer in the world of romance, is Jane Austen, and perhaps Pride and Prejudice is considered one of the great romance novels of all time. One of the themes running throughout is the desperate and calculating nature of marriage and how Elizabeth keeps getting marriage proposals from Mr Collins. So much so, that at one point the story goes like this: “Really, Mr. Collins,' cried Elizabeth with some warmth, 'you puzzle me exceedingly. If what I have hitherto said can appear to you in the form of encouragement, I know not how to express my refusal in such a way as to convince you of its being one.” Who asked who to marry? Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran is listed everywhere online as the number one bridal waltz (what did you use). I would like to interrogate the lyrics briefly. And darling I will be loving you 'til we're 70 And baby my heart could still fall as hard at 23 And I'm thinking 'bout how people fall in love in mysterious ways Maybe just the touch of a hand Oh me I fall in love with you every single day And I just wanna tell you I am How did you two meet and strike up a romantic interest? So honey now Take me into your loving arms Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars Place your head on my beating heart I'm thinking out loud Maybe we found love right where we are Is love something can be "found"? We are going to look at your vows now. And as a prelude, I found these writing wedding vows tips from brides.com. Let's see what you think about them. Say "I love you." Tell your partner you'll be there through thick and thin. Share personal stories. Actually make promises. Acknowledge the support you'll need from others. They also offered tips about writing them. Don't wait until the last minute. Plan to have your vows written three weeks before your wedding. Make a list of all your thoughts. Write up to three drafts. Don't try to include everything. Avoid words like "always" and "never." Embrace sentimentality. Go after laughter. Get inspired by books, songs, movies, and poems. Practice reading out loud. Indicate pauses and intonation. Ask a trusted friend to listen. Make a fresh copy of your vows for the ceremony. Keep the vows a secret from your partner until the ceremony. In fact, let's listen to them. Jade, you read yours first, so let's listen first: Tim, you are truly my best friend, the person I want to share every important moment with, good or bad. You are the person I want to share ridiculous jokes with and to do weird dances in the kitchen with for no reason. I feel so incredibly lucky to have found someone who is so genuinely kind, caring and thoughtful. You don't hesitate to go out of your way to make the important people around you feel loved and valued, and I think that is such a beautiful quality. I love how passionate you are about the things you care about, and how much you love to learn and grow as a person. I am so unbelievably proud of you and I promise to make you proud too. We both know that I am absolutely terrible at making decisions, indecisive is an understatement, but one decision I am so confident in, is that I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I don't believe in fairy tales, but I do know that when I am with you I feel a sense of stability, comfort, acceptance and love that I never knew existed before I met you. I know that special moments in our life have been made so much better by sharing them together, and that we are both prepared to work on and grow our relationship for the rest of our lives, and honestly I can't imagine anything better. I feel so fortunate to be able to love someone who enriches my life in so many ways, and cannot express how excited I am to marry you. Tim, I promise to always support and encourage you, to care for you and celebrate with you. I promise to value our differences as much as our common ground. And I promise to always be grateful that you eat all the yucky flavours of skittles and save the green ones for me. Today I stand in front of the people who mean the most to us and say, I choose you. I choose you over all others, I choose you to laugh with, to cry with and to grow with. I choose you to love, and I will choose to love you every single day for the rest of my life. There are three things, in particular, that struck me about your vows, Jade. Tim's nature of going out of his way to make people around him feel loved and valued. How did that crystallise as a quality to include in your vows? Tim eating the yucky Skittles for you. What are the bad colours? You finished by saying "I choose you". Describe the nature of that verb. Is it once off thing, or is choosing an on-going aspect of your relationship? Now let's listen to Tim's vows: It is without doubt that we have flourished together, Jade, we are more than the sum of our parts, and today I stand here committing to this relationship, considering myself beyond lucky to have found that. I have had many wonderful opportunities in my life, fortunately I was wise enough to recognise the greatest opportunity in asking for your hand in marriage. For all the knowledge and skill, I could seek to gain, I value this, what we have together, above it all. With all the beautiful and shiny things available in life, I am most drawn to your beauty, your nourishment, and your madness, because you are just mad enough to make things interesting. So, I won't avert my gaze to the stars when what I'm most proud of is in front of me today. My heart chooses you, Jade, and this life we have. When I wake every day, I do so with you in mind, when I dream a dream, I put you right beside me because what would any of it be worth without you? I could achieve many things alone, but I have achieved true greatness in love. My head can only kneel before my heart in its choice, and so I promise, beyond rationality, to continue to choose you, in sickness and in health, through absence and presence, peril and joy. I will love you after every board game where you target me and win, I will love you through every late arrival to everything without fail, and I will love you after every time I have to give you directions to your own home. I trust that you'll accept my love hand poured into every terrible or lazy meal I ever make, or the love I'm expressing through every annoying song I sing, and with the strength provided by our dearest friends here today I'm sure you'll be able to accept my love and apologies after facing my many imperfections. As philosophers, you and I don't deal in the absolutes of forever, but any fears I have are vanquished by trusting you. Your patience in the face of my flaws tempers my insecurities and your graceful love enriches my very being. Just knowing I don't have to face trials alone is halfway to deliverance, so it is you and I against the world, dear Jade, I love you, and I'm elated to be married to you. Tim, some things I wanted to explore. What did you mean by, I have achieved true greatness in love? You say you will love Jade after she targets you in board games and wins. What is this a reference to? You reference "graceful love" and not having to "face trials alone". Is this a key point for you? Questions from listeners about vows. Craig Mitchell, a friend and a Uniting Church minister. My question is about to whom the vow is given/addressed. There are family and friends as witnesses. Some of doing this publicly is that we are in a sense making ourselves accountable to others to uphold our promises, but also acknowledging that requires a supportive community. For some, this 'accountability' also has a religious dimension. ie being accountable to a deity, but also recognising the need for the deity's strength. So my question is how this wider sense of marriage as a social and even religious contract/covenant with both accountabilities and the need for 'a village' shapes both the words and the intent? How would the vows be different in private? What are we expected to say or need to say because this is a public declaration? My second question similar to above is how social expectations might negatively shape such vows (including seeing them as irrevocably eternal or even lifelong when that is largely the exception)? How do you take something seriously without requiring the impossible? Third question: When do celebrants draw the line and say “I don't think you should say that?” Michael Mills, actor and writer. Q: How is it okay that in some wedding vows in 2022, part of a woman's vow is still sometimes "to honour and obey." While the man doesn't have such a vow? How is this still a thing? And yes... I've witnessed it recently. A question from Colin Richard: Do people still say things like ‘forever' and ‘always' and things like that? They're lovely ideas, but we should probably throw in the words ‘I will try…' rather than promising something so many can't achieve (because we're all human, things change, and we can't always deliver on the original promise). Your thoughts? Let's start drawing this to a close now. Perhaps a little more Jane Austen, this time from Sense and Sensibility: "Lady Middleton resigned herself... Contenting herself with merely giving her husband a gentle reprimand on the subject, five or six times every day.” I think that's a reference to nagging. Are either of you nagging each other yet? Have you learned strategies for dealing with such things? And in Much Ado About Nothing, Benedick says to Leonato, "Thou art sad; get thee a wife, get thee a wife!" Tim, is that good advice? Thank you, both. Oh, and this podcast interview is me fulfilling my pledge made at your ceremony, to keep you two in check and accountable. 01:26:56 Musical Pilgrimage In the musical pilgrimage, we have a live version of Call On Me by Siberian Tiger, recorded during their intriguing conversation with John Murch on the radionotes podcast. So, when I was a kid, first grade with Miss Spencer at Solana Vista, we had an assignment to figure out what we wanted to be when we grew up. A super easy process for any first grader and I mean that sincerely because at that point we were still innocent and non jaded to the realities of our world. Many kids said usually what their parents did for a living. Doctor, lawyer, prostitute, crack dealer and so on. Believe it or not the aspiring crack dealer, Charlie, was an Asian kid that liked rap music and had zero idea what he was referring to. One of our classmates, a friend at the time, who loves dogs just about as much as I do, said without blinking and so matter of factly, I want to be a Siberian Husky. The only part he accomplished was being a bit husky and going to UDub, right Spike...oh didn't.you fuck Kristi and Tessa just last year while married to....oh what is your current wife and mother of your kid's name? I cannot remember nor do I care as you fucked me over you complete piece of shit. You morphed into a lard ass fuck. And BTW, your a disgrace to your family. Your brothers are real athletes and solid men...you not so much. Any way have fun with that..... So back to career day my other buddy said with absolute confidence and self assuredness "I want to be a SEAL..".like a Navy SEAL but our teacher had not thus far heard of the elite Teams as her comment was something to the extent of "Well, Ja..., You're a human remember so you can't turn into a seal when you get older. Nor do they make any money...even if they work at Sea World. So what else would you like to be when you grow up? Somewhat disgruntled and confused Ja....said very quickly, in a first grader prepubescent voice "I wanna be a SEAL.i said I want to be. SEAL..." It was clear that Miss Spencer was somewhat frustrated because her ability to tolerate bullshit was at an all time low. Compared to what we normally did in class or on the playground each day simply saying he that one wanted to be a SEAL should have not even registered on the Bullshit Meter. Muttering under her breathe as she sipped from a coffee mug, "God damnit, why today? Than at a normal tone " I said before Jam....you can't be a seal as kids don't grow up to be any other species other than humans. I appreciate your enthusiasm for aquatic animals but you have to choose a more reasonable occupational goal." Ok...so in first grade we didn't fucking swear as much as we Fucking do now but I think that was the first time I ever heardy my buddy use the F word and by F word i mean he said to me, as we sat on the floor of the classroom in a circle with all twenty two kids around us, "Dude, is this bitch fucking retarded? Why doesn't she know what the fuck a SEAL is. What the Fuck, man?" Needless to say Jamie was sent to time out and had to pick up trash at recess but got out of it by tricking some dude named Pedro into doing for him. I have yet to figure that one out but it was still a memorable day. Coincidentally,.that was the same day that Miss. Spencer was late coming back to lunch and always kept a bottle of special juice on her desk. She was so much for fun from that day on....not sure what happened? She was often late and kept mumbling something about the bus and not having a license. I thought she also drove a school bus for some of the kids Anyway, my buddy actually did grow up but be became a Siberian Tiger and not a Seal as he hoped but he did become the first ever tiger to join the elite special forces team known as the US Navy SEALs otherwise known as the Teams....it's quite a remarkable story. I hope he is well and Miss Spencer. I am truly proud of Jamie and the several other guys we grew up with and surfed with that became SEALs. That was my dream at one time and I am glad that you all had the talent, motivation and fucking unwavering desire to fight for our country and stand up for what is right. I would have loved to have had that opportunity as well. You all are truly a rare breed.

Here we are. Three zoos in three days. Columbus, Ohio. I know I was starting to feel the miles. But this zoo was just voted the number 1 zoo in America (that's right. Ahead of San Diego) by the USA travel guide. If you can't get pumped up for that then what can you? Let me get the bear picture out of the way right now. These guys were just laying around but they at least were nice enough to be close so we could get a good look at them. I have one picture of the front claws of this guy's buddy - yikes. You are not supposed to run when you see a grizzly bear but after seeing those claws I might have something running down my leg. This zoo was really good for getting close to the animals. Twice we got to pet snakes. This is a black rat snake - it is named as such because it is black and it eats rats. Lots of imagination in the scientific crowd. There were also goats, a bunny, a box turtle and a monitor lizard. The last three were right near the exit as we were leaving. What a great parting gift. The box turtle is unique because he has hinges on the underside of his shell so that he can crawl inside and fold up his shell for complete security. This guy put on a nice and close personal show. He walked back and forth right in front of us. Literally we were inches away. We learned there are three subspecies of tiger that are extinct. I wouldn't doubt more are on the way. They even changed the name of the Siberian Tiger to Amur Tiger because there are no longer any of them in Siberia. They are gorgeous. This zoo also has manatees. It was a bigger tank with lots of fish. One of the manatees -Stubby - lost most of her tail when she was hit by a motorboat. Propellers are the biggest obstacle right now. They are in Florida and the not-so-funny joke is that 9 out of 10 manatees have propeller scars on their backs. Great creatures. It was really cool to see a Koala. Not technically a bear but still looks super cuddly. My most cherished stuffed animal is a Koala from when I was a little kid. These guys didn't move while we were watching - they are pretty much doped up from the eucalyptus - but it was cool. We also learned that they don't drink because they get all the water they need from the leaves. One of the big highlights was seeing this guy. A 4 1/2 month old Asian Elephant. He was super cute. He was almost black - I guess Asian Elephants are darker - and looked so small next to his mom. He weighs a robust 600 pounds. He was shorter than Dayne (and maybe Evan). That is really packing it on. We almost missed him. He goes off exhibit at 2pm since he is so young. It would have been a real bummer. Here is my stinky girl. I say that because the flower she is in - the Rafflesia plant - really gets to three feet in diameter and is really stinky. She is so cute though. And this is what that super cute girl loves so much. We are 3 for 3 with flamingos on this trip. She is in heaven. These guys were nice and close. The pink color actually comes from the food they eat. I got that nugget from watching the Tour De France and not from the zoo (thanks Phil). And finally, this is Dayne and Evan - I mean a pair of Langurs. They put on a good show. In the next exhibit over there was a baby. The baby is really cute because he is orange. Easy to spot but not so easy to get a picture of. They were hiding in a dark corner and always moving around.Tomorrow we are having a fun day - as if this whole trip isn't fun. We are staying in Columbus and going to the water park.
"If your picture is not good enough, it's because you're not close enough." That's the mantra of Israeli solider-turned-wildlife-photographer Amos Nachoum. His film, Picture of His Life is screening online at the DocEdge Film Festival.

Victoria Bromley is a wildlife filmmaker and part of the BBC’s natural history unit. She has produced some of their most recognisable programmes, including Spring Watch, Planet Earth Live and Blue Planet II. She’s worked to highlight the plight of the Siberian Tiger and most recently of the little-known Pangolin. Growing up in Coventry, Victoria learnt much from her grandad - an encyclopedia on birds, who signed her up for the WWF (the World Wildlife Fund, not that Wrestling nonsense) at the age of 7. Governed by an agenda of authenticity, Victoria relishes the opportunity to change perspectives, move people and have them engage with nature through filmmaking. She explores what really goes on behind the scenes of a wildlife documentary, and the joy of going back to basics when camping out. She particularly focuses on fond memories of getting under the skin of Mexico whilst filming in the country. A new parent, Victoria has great optimism for the next generation and admits parenting is not unlike natural history filmmaking... trying to predict the behaviours of an animal that can’t understand you, always up when the sun rises, and forever carrying a lot of equipment! It’s no secret Rodge was in hiding. It’s like he never left. But somehow, he came back… different. He sees the world through a new lens. Could be Kodak. He’s definitely keen to thank his rescue team, take on the truth, bear his hip hoppier side, and salute the Siberian Tiger (among other musings). Learn more about your ad choices. From her upbringing in State College to her time at Berklee to her arrival in Philadelphia, Ellen Tiberio-Shultz has been building an impressive body of music. Dan and Ellen talk about playing house shows as a teen, the trappings of "authenticity", her complicated feelings about her music education (being one of the only women studying guitar amidst a "sea of dudes"), and the amazing people she's met along the way who have helped her become the musician she is now.
This week’s Live from the Gardens is chock full of important information about the American Cockroach and the Siberian Tiger, the two main morphs from Animorphs #6: The Capture. We cover all the important stuff like how depressing it is that the human race has almost completely killed out tigers but how ligers are a pretty cool thing so maybe it’s not all bad? We also cover the ASMR of roaches for Brayden’s sake and, for the sake of all our listeners, we discuss how to survive if we were ever Jumanji’d into the jungle
Our good friend Juniper returns to talk about her recent switch to vegetarianism, and about how she's more than just a can of beans video. Juniper: Shelby Jo PlummerEssex: Mike Gospel
