All Our Social Links In this episode of JB's Bible and Bourbon Talk, JB and Fancy Rob discuss how Christians should respond to the culture of outrage. They emphasize the importance of responding with grace, peace, and an overwhelming amount of love, even in the face of anger and outrage. They explore the story of Paul's missionary journey to Ephesus in Acts 19, where he faced opposition and outrage from those who were losing money due to the influence of Christianity. The hosts highlight the need for common sense, cool heads, and truth to prevail in resolving conflicts and diffusing outrage. They remind listeners that the gospel is countercultural, and that Christians should respond differently to the outrage of the culture, seeking to bring peace and love to a world easily stirred up into anger. The episode concludes with the feature pour of Old Scout Smooth Ambler store pick. Takeaways:   As Christians, we are called to respond to outrage with grace and peace, rather than joining in the anger and outrage of the culture. The gospel is countercultural and Christians should respond differently to the outrage of the culture, seeking to bring peace and love. Common sense must prevail in responding to outrage, and we should take a step back, listen, and seek to understand the root of the problem before responding. Wisdom and common sense are essential in navigating outrage and responding in a way that reflects Christ's love and grace. Studying the Bible and seeking wisdom from God is crucial in developing the ability to respond to outrage with grace and peace. Responding to outrage requires common sense, cool heads, and truth. Understanding the root of the issue is crucial in responding effectively. Jesus is the ultimate source of truth and peace. Being a peacemaker means responding to outrage in a biblical fashion. Now that we have our own bourbon with Pursuit Spirits, we're learning first hand how distributors can make or break your brand. There's a huge learning curve to understanding the lingo and just being able to communicate on the same page. But this can be maddening if you choose the wrong distributor that doesn't give you any attention and let's your brand go stale. We invited Johnny Foster to come back on the show to give us insights on how to work best with distributors. Johnny was a guest back on Episode 227 when he was a part of Smooth Ambler but now he's at Ragged Branch and leads their sales and distribution. He gives the pros and cons of selecting large versus boutique distributors, how to spend smartly on incentives, and targeted marketing funds. Ultimately though, motivating partners comes down to building authentic relationships through regular visits and communication. Show Notes: Above the Char with Fred Minnick (@fredminnick) talks about the export market. What are you doing today at Ragged Branch? How do you motivate distributors without losing your damn mind? How do you tell a story and justify a higher price tag versus the big 6 staples? What can smaller distillers do to appeal to distributors? How do you guide people on choosing a distributor that is big or small? How do you spend money with a distributor through incentives and programs? What does it cost to get in-store displays? What dollar amount per case do you put towards programming? What makes a company look attractive for acquisition? What are successful methods for marketing and getting product off the shelf? Where do you put focus on chains vs independent stores? How do you protect yourself from contracts? Support this podcast on Patreon

Tasting Notes:  Not since Smooth Ambler was sending 15, 17, and 19 yr old MGP out into the world for under $100 more than a decade ago have I tasted a 15+ year old MGP, let alone a cask strength version at 98.1 proof!!! If you are planning to go out and chase Pappy and BTAC, hold up, because this year's 15yr Remus Gatsby Reserve may just be the ultimate spoiler. Nose of pure bourbon candy with complex herbs and sweet creams firing on all cylinders from the glass. On the palate, the perfect amount of old oak, dark and deepening at first with red fruit, then lifting mid-palate back to the signature sweetness and drinkability inherent in all MGP. Liquid candy corn! I never thought I'd see supply from MGP get this old again, but of course they're wanting $300 for it, but truthfully that's about exactly right in terms of price, rarity, and the market as it exists today. It's rare that a new bourbon release has an age statement this high, and even more rare when it doesn't disappoint for the price. Try one...well worth it.

Cheers,Scott and JakeBourbon Lens     About Smooth Ambler: In the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia, Smooth Ambler is a craft distiller of artisan whiskies. Smooth Ambler has a family of quality wheated and rye bourbons that includes handcrafted whiskies 100% distilled and aged in West Virginia and curated blends sourced from the finest all-American whiskies. Founded in 2009 with the simple goal of producing the best whiskey possible, the brand has been part of Pernod Ricard since 2016. From the Founder, John Little: Who is crazy enough to start a whiskey company from scratch, in the hills of West Virginia, in a world filled with hundred-year-old Kentucky distilleries? Folks with a fiercely independent spirit, that's who. At Smooth Ambler, tradition isn't a recipe we follow. Our company is literal proof of solid Appalachian know-how. That's when the hard working, creative, and resourceful folks of West Virginia come together to make something beautiful (and damn good) that no one else thought possible. We didn't just set out to make award winning whiskey. We also set out to create a source of pride for West Virginians everywhere. To embrace the best of everything around us - the land, the people, and the resources – to create a business that would make a difference by providing opportunities for the people in our community. And the way we do it is simple, we do what we think is right, everyday. We don't look to see what our competitors are doing, we don't look at the past, we do it by being honest, embracing diversity, and creating relationships built on trust. It's not complicated, it's the only way we know how to do it. So yeah, we're not from Kentucky, but if you couldn't already tell, we like it that way. Because it turns out you can make bourbon in West Virginia, too. And you don't need a family name or recipe to make that award winning whiskey, you just need a fiercely independent spirit. - John Little, Founder Coverage and Show Links: Smooth Ambler Smooth Ambler: A West Virginia distillery with real spirit | Positively WV Podcasts | wvnews.com

When Smooth Ambler opened in 2009, few envisioned the craft whiskey distillery would grow so big so fast. John Little, co-founder and whiskey maker, started the company with his father-in-law. The two had no experience with distilling, but their enthusiasm to learn, commitment to transparent labeling, and community-driven ethos has brought them success and industry-wide respect. Despite the fact that many high priced bourbons and whiskeys are older than the company itself, Smooth Ambler is a shining example of a company aligning profits and impact to achieve sustainable growth.Pour yourself a nice glass, sit back, and hit play to hear the fascinating story behind John Little and Smooth Ambler.More on Smooth Ambler:Website → https://smoothambler.com/ FaceBook → https://www.facebook.com/SmoothAmbler Instagram → https://www.instagram.com/smoothambler/ Twitter → https://twitter.com/SmoothAmbler John Little's LinkedIn → https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-little-b003698/ Episode Highlights:0:00 Intro01:41 Background04:17 Whiskey10:57 Smooth Ambler Spirits Co.25:34 Transparency28:07 Optimism and the Future36:04 ConclusionFollow our host Conor on LinkedIn and Twitter to stay up to date! Smooth Ambler made a name for themselves with Old Scout. It was before the big craze of higher-aged sourced MGP when it was relatively easy to find. But, all good things come to an end and now they had to figure out how to keep that business sustainable. John Little, Founder of Smooth Ambler, joins the show once again to talk about why transparently sourcing whiskey was a critical component of the business. John feels they made plenty of mistakes early on and are trying to recapture the glory Old Scout once had. We dive into the economics of the sourced market of increased costs and what the future holds for their own distilled whiskey. Show Notes: Above the Char with Fred Minnick (@fredminnick) talks about the best introduction to bourbon flights How hard was it to take a step back from being involved with every facet of the business? Why did sourcing whiskey never leave your business? Did the market dictate Old Scout's trajectory? Why not shut down the still and go all-in on sourced product? Did you ever think about putting Old Scout to the side once your distilled product was ready? What future modeling did you use to figure out when to put down new make or just purchase aged inventory? What was the reaction when Old Scout went off the market and back on? Why was transparency so important when it came to telling the Old Scout story? Besides capital, what initial challenges do you have sourcing whiskey? How much better have you gotten at projecting pipeline and future growth? Aged stock has increased significantly, so how are you handling this? It's another jam packed Bourbon Community Roundtable as we discuss the latest trending topics of the past few weeks. One of the greatest pieces of whiskey news is that tariffs are being eliminated. This will open up international commerce once again for bourbon and we take a stab at some theories on what moves we expect distilleries to make in 2022. There are always bottle releases that get all the attention, but after a solid year of bourbon releases we give our takes on some bottles that should have gotten more attention. Lastly, the market is the market and we all know that stores are beginning to price their prized bottles close to secondary. If you've been a long-time customer of that retailer, are you going to switch stores or start paying higher prices? Now that tariffs have been revoked, what moves do we expect distilleries to make next in 2022? Do you think the EU can make it more appealing to sell American Whiskey there vs. keeping it in the US? Is there a bottle release that happened this year that you feel should get more attention? When we typically talk about building a distillery, we usually think of things like stills, mash tanks, and where to store all the grain. But building a distillery is no different than building a house. To make all that stuff work, you need electricity, plumbing, and pumps... lots and lots and lots of pumps. Before you even begin breaking ground or rehabbing an old abandoned distillery, a lot of this needs to be planned out. This is one topic that we've never covered on the podcast and that's how the heck do you actually build a working distillery? We invited Nick Morgan and Ronnie Flerlage to be on the show. They are mechanical engineers from Shrout Tate Wilson Consulting Engineers and have experience on how to design and build a distillery from the ground up. They specialize in being a one stop shop that will guide you through the entire process of making sure you have all the guts needed to turn on the lights, but also specialize in working with companies like Vendome to create the best still and distillation equipment to meet your needs. Smoke Wagon felt as if it came on to the bourbon scene like it was fired out of a cannon. In the past 2 years, they have become one of the most highly sought after brands. However, the story of Smoke Wagon began over a decade ago. Aaron Chepenik started in the bar scene in LA that expanded into Vegas, but he got burnt out with the late nights and partying. That led him and his investor friend to start a vodka business which eventually opened the door to bourbon. Aaron had dreams of distilling his own whiskey, but quickly had to face reality when he realized that the equipment he purchased to distill whiskey couldn't scale after a visit to a little distillery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. When he was at MGP, he ended up buying as much aged product as he could and had the foresight to begin putting down new fill barrels as well. As fate (or government restrictions) would have it, he couldn't release his first bourbon for almost 4 years after. He's built a cult-like following with his overly transparent personality on Instagram which makes him even more genuine to us bourbon enthusiasts. Do you feel that wholesalers and elected representatives are working for the benefit of the consumers? Do you think that it's fair that retailers own the product and can charge whatever they want? At the end of the day, everyone is still making their margin so why do retailers choose to mark it up? Why don't more retailers push back on distributors? Should distributors and retailers be scared about the future? Should we move to a system where highly desirable releases only happen through a distillery website?

Last week, we kicked off the series of analyzing Bourbon & Banter's article on "Is Bourbon Broken?" and this next installment looks at the secondary market. The prices of bourbon have been growing immensely and who knows if the prices will ever drop. Will there ever be an end in sight for consumers buying on the secondary or should companies adjust their prices accordingly? We tackle all this and more. Are people forced to buy special bottles on the secondary market these days? Is it foolish to buy bottles for so much more than retail? How can you deter bottle flipping? Is there anything distilleries can do to prevent flipping on the secondary market? At what point will we hit the price ceiling? Is it ethical for distillers to look at pricing on the secondary market to make business decisions? Are auctions setting the secondary prices of bottles? How do auctions get a pass unlike the secondary market? Are current pricing strategies fair to the consumer?
