Welcome to episode 19 of the HECHO Corpus Christi podcast, the podcast featuring Corpus Christi’s creators, makers, doers, and builders. This episode is a first…it’s the first time I’ve interviewed multi people at the same time for an episode. We have the pleasure of hearing from Elena and Gerald Flores, a husband and wife duo whose ever-expanding side hustles celebrate their culture, and favorite food. Elena is the proprietress of Sew Bonita, where the self-taught seamstress designs and sews items that reflect her heritage and her desire to motivate passionate women to chase their dreams. Gerald is the creative behind Taco Gear, a leading brand celebrating all things tacos. They host the wonderfully entertaining and inspiring podcast Sew Taco, and Elena has pioneered the pop up market Loca for Local, which begins its spring virtual pop up online on March 3 with pickup on March 6th at House of Rock. Check it out at locaforlocal.com. Not to be outdone, Gerald created Taco Chair, a video series where he films persons of interest preparing and eating their favorite taco. Gerald and Elena’s exhortation to “just start” was my motivation to start this podcast a couple years ago, and it was a pleasure to finally get to sit down with them to hear their Corpus stories. A special thank you to Randi and Steven Carroll and Driftwood Coffee for letting us crash their store to record this episode. Gerald and Elena are always creating new products, and even new brands. Since we recorded this episode, Gerald officially branded his video production company as Tuxedo Goose Films. They are a must follow, but I’ll be frank, trying to keep up with them can be exhausting because they are constantly evolving their brands and helping others do the same. Follow them on Instagram at @sewtaco @sewbonita @tacogear On the web at locaforlocal.com and find the Taco Chair on youtube by searching The Taco Chair or Taco Gear. Thank you again to Driftwood Coffee for hosting us. Follow them @driftwoodcoffeeco and give episode 5 a listen to hear Driftwood’s story. Thank you Gerald and Elena for the great conversation! Thank you to our infrastructure partners SoundGuys, Sawyer Audiology, and Clint Tucker Homes. On this episode (which we hope sounds marginally better), we discuss the changes we made to our recording process and the tools we use. Every year, Android Authority looks to award the best smartphone released. But if you ask 50 different reviewers what the best phone of the year is, you’ll get 30 different ideas. But if you look at just the objective numbers, only one stands above the rest. It’s a very narrow field, but there is one clear winner, and we’re looking to crown that winner. Chris Thomas, executive editor of SoundGuys, and chief product tester joins us to discuss our various categories, how they were tested, which phone won those categories, and finally, which phone won over all. There is a problem brewing in the world that has festered for too long. It’s time we all spoke out against this evil that hurts us every day. Of course, we’re talking about hand dryers in the bathroom. What else would we be talking about? The fact is, hand dryers are less sanitary than paper towels - but this isn’t the Disease Guys Podcast, so why do we care? It’s because hand dryers damage our hearing. It’s a fact, and it was proven by a 13 year old scientist with a decibel meter. Twenty-two out of 23 hand dryers tested produced more noise than health officials recommend. For those even shorter, like children, it’s even worse. We have all that and a few more surprises along the way in this episode of the SoundGuys podcast! Since digital music became popular, audio engineers have been pushing the idea that louder is better. Unfortunately, that just isn’t true. As music gets louder, fine details within the music become undetectable, and the experience is ruined. This all came to a head in 2008 when the game Guitar Hero had to remix some tracks for the game. Most notably, was Metallica’s Death Magnetic and suddenly, the music sounded better. Since then, it seems the loudness was have come to an end, but we wanted to take a moment to remember this fascinating sonic phenomenon...and pray it never returns. We love sound here at the SoundGuys, and after a year of podcasting, we've come across a lot of great topics that are super interesting, but there isn't enough there for a full episode. So we're introducing a new kind of episode called Sound Bites. Sound Bites will be short, to the point, give you something really neat, and then let you go about your day. The first episode will debut on April 1st and every month after that on the 1st. Happy listening!
When most of us think of sound, we think about music that gets our foot tapping, or maybe a pleasant background noise like birds chirping or waves washing up against a shoreline. It’s soothing, and calming. But, like most everything else in life, it can also have a darker side. What if you wanted to use sound… ...to harm? Recorded July 8, 2018 One of the biggest devices of the year is just a few weeks away. Is the Note a spec bump, or is it the big beefy powerhouse you’ll want in your pocket? All of that will be covered in this featured story of the Android Authority Podcast. The Android Authority podcast is the weekly podcast where we look at all the top stories from the past seven days and drill down into the details. But in this episode, we are doing something different. This is a different kind of podcast episode which we are calling a featured story. A featured story is where we take a deep dive into one topic. This will be a bonus episode that we’ll do an undetermined number of times, but probably at least once per month. Perhaps it will be interviews with industry leaders. Maybe it will be a review of a device that was just released. This time, it’s a rumor roundup of one of the biggest devices of the year, the Note 9. Here's our article about it. It is a very busy time around the Android Authority network, be sure to check in with DGiT.com, Drone Rush, and SoundGuys.com (also check out their podcast) for some of the latest from our team. Seven. Joshua Vergara has his hands full this week with a total personality list of seven. Joe Hindy, Jonathan Feist, Andrew Grush, Nirave Gondhia, Lanh Nguyen and John Dye are all on deck to talk about seven, the Note 7 that is. In a particularly on-point show, even if a little extra long, the topic is almost exclusively the new Samsung Galaxy Note 7. Opinions come freely, particularly for the three that have had the chance to hold the phone already. With opinions ranging from unimpressed all the way up to 'I pre-ordered mine already,' join us to talk about the latest from Samsung. Thank you for joining us. With Joshua Vergara away at a Samsung event, Jonathan Feist and Joe Hindy bring John Dye back onto the show - who ends up joining from a coffee shop due to weather issues in his area. A fairly chill conversation ensues, including words like 'reprobate' and attempts to pronounce John Legere. Topics on deck include the new ZTE Axon 7, a slick looking flagship calibre phone that has Bluetooth, Prisma, the app that makes your images look good, and talk about rumors of two Nexus phones coming soon from HTC. Sailfish and Marlin are the codenames for 5.2-inch and 5.5-inch phones with similar specs, save for display resolution, if nothing else. Thank you for joining us. Joshua Vergara is joined by Joe Hindy, Jonathan Feist and are happy to have Lanh Nguyen partake in the shenanigans as they round out a short discussion, possibly ending our long running topic of Pokemon. Once that was out of the way, Josh asked the team about their desires for Comic-Con, leading back to a quick chat about messaging applications. Snickers have nougat. Finally, our discussion on the new Motorola (Lenovo) Moto Z line turns into an existential conversation on the review process, USB Type-C audio and how great or terrible mods and customizations can be on the Moto phone. Joshua Vergara leads the team through a lengthy introduction, where Joe Hindy talks Pokemon Go, Nirave Gondhia talks about returning home to the UK and Jonathan Feist is hanging out in downtown Portland for a while. Discussion turns to the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, we have plenty to say, particularly expanding our conversation to talk about modern smartphone needs, features, competitive edge and more. We round out the show with a lively discussion about USB Type-C audio, as opposed to the old 3.5mm jack. Then Nirave fell asleep. In his absence, we discussed Amazon Prime Day for a moment, where Josh shopped for a 1GB hard drive. Thank you for joining us. That's what he said. In a super chill, but overly thoughtful episode, Joshua Vergara, Joe Hindy and Jonathan Feist muse over the release of Pokemon GO in North America and discuss another strong game title hitting Android, Final Fantasy VII is ready for download. Finally, the discussion turns to the ups and downs of beauty mode as a feature of front facing cameras, this after Mel Wells lost all her freckles to a Selfie. Thank you for joining us. Joshua Vergara is back, safe and sound, and is joined by Joe Hindy, Jonathan Feist and Nirave Gondhia. Tune in to listen to our ramblings on Brexit, just a little, but only after we dive into the fancy new name for Android N - Android Nougat - but how do you pronounce that now?!?! Final Fantasy Brave Exvius takes the stage for a bit, before we discuss the recent leaks of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 and its expected, but maybe not appreciated, iris scanner. Our best wishes go out to Josh, his family and his neighbors as they deal with a forest fire dangerously close to their homes in California. Jonathan Feist leads a wildly off topic episode while Joe Hindy, Andrew Grush and Nirave Gondhia help keep the laughs rolling. We eventually get down to the leathery hot mess that is the naming schemes of the X and Z for Sony and Motorola. The Sony Xperia X line, as well as the Lenovo Motorola Moto Z line, offer all the right specs, but you'll have to listen to find out if we are still underwhelmed with the devices or ready to drop cash on these new phones. In the final moments, Joe is allowed to address the somewhat ridiculous idea that the Android app market is in decline, come analyze some data with us. Thank you for joining us. With a large group of our team meeting up in Los Angeles for a few days, Josh Vergara, Andrew Grush and Jonathan Feist stole a few minutes away to record a few words for you. Join us for a quick word on what we're up to (hint: VR Source,) looking forward to sharing all of our E3 experiences with you as well, so be sure to check in next time. We also want to say a quick word of condolences to all that have been lost to violence in the last short amount of time. Josh, in particular, shares his feelings on the senseless act that ended the life of the young YouTube artist, Christina Grimmie. Jonathan Feist and Joe Hindy get to ask Nirave Gondhia and Lanh Nguyen all about Computex on this episode of the Android Authority Podcast. Virtual reality was a major player at the technology event held in Taiwan, Captain America themed hardware also made an impact on the team, but laptops, tablets and other computer hardware aside, the guys have more to say about the weather and food than anything. Josh Vergara, Joe Hindy and Jonathan Feist are joined by Nirave Gondhia for another great episode of the Android Authority Podcast. As is usually the case, our goal to rehash our thoughts on Google I/O is totally sidetracked by talk about ES File Explorer, new Pebble devices and the worst phone names of all time. We wanted to remind you that current Nexus devices will get future updates, just in case there was confusion. Thank you for joining us, and thank you to each and every one of our 2 million YouTube subscribers. Josh Vergara, Joe Hindy and Jonathan Feist are joined by John Dye, at least until security pulls him out of his old school, for a pretty chill episode of the AA Podcast. We'd ask you to schedule us in, but all the good calendars are gone, we'd ask you to download our show to listen later, but our favorite file manager has gone rotten, at least VR is hitting homes and we're excited to see what the Vive and other contenders accomplishes next. Finally, we spend more than a few minutes debating if tech bloggers are out of touch with the average user, or if we think the average user is out of touch with technology as a whole. Thank you for joining us, be sure to check out our Gary explains series, bringing you an in-depth look at hardware and Android development topics ranging from system cache to what limits the size of the microSD card on your phone. Keeping things chill, Josh Vergara, Joe Hindy and Jonathan Feist keep it real on this episode of the AA Podcast. A quick chat about navigation apps has us joking about T-Pain, Joe thinks the new Baywatch has smart casting, The Rock Clock rocks Josh's morning, Intel having some issues in mobile, then we argue for half hour about what is missing in stock Android? Josh Vergara, joined by Joe Hindy, Nirave Gondhia and Jonathan Feist are excited to welcome John Dye to the latest episode of the AA Podcast. More than one laugh was shared as the extended check-in revealed more behinds the scenes info than it really should have, giving you insight into what makes us tick. Tangents aside, we talk cooking and trade shows, then we talked a little about tech: batteries don't just explode, at least not normally, Uber is making some financial changes, and in no real surprise, Google killed the Nexus 9, what does that mean for Google I/O? Andrew Grush returns to join Josh Vergara, Joe Hindy and Jonathan Feist for the latest episode of the AA Podcast. Joe's spirited discussion on what makes a flagship smartphone stand out continues this week, moving the topic more to the software side of things. We didn't talk about Google bringing app awards to the Google I/O conference this year, but we did talk about what we do and do not like about some phones, we think the Motorola Citrus with a Nexus Live Case or DBrand skin wouldn't make the phone any better, but that certainly made us talk about physical buttons. Thank you to AJ for his continued awesomeness in our forums, we hope we answered your questions with grace.
