UW-River Falls has a new Dean at the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences. Bob Bosold talks to Dean Mike Orth about his Wisconsin connection and what he found attractive about coming to UW-River Falls.Hurricane Idalia passed through Florida yesterday, but remained strong enough to cause damage all the way up the east coast to North Carolina and Virgina.  Zach Webb is a technical agronomist in Southeastern North Carolina where he says farmers have been rolling 24/7 to try to bring in their crops - but some, just flat out aren't ready.  Wednesday was the annual agronomy and soils field day in Arlington and Nate Zimdars was there. He visited with Dr. Emily Bick about an insect eavesdropping machine that detects the sounds of insects munching!Mike North with EverAg joins Pam Jahnke for a live conversation about what's happening in the dairy markets.  North says kids returning to school does change some of the dairy processing dynamics.  More fluid milk goes to bottling which can decrease the value of cream.  Meanwhile kids in school means plenty of school lunches serving pizza - and that's great news for the cheese complex.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Kim Crabbe was the first African-American to roster on the USWNT. She was on the 1986 team, but given that we've been telling the stories of the original USWNT trailblazers, Kim needed to be celebrated. According to longtime friend and soccer leader, Samuel Okpodu, Kim is the "Cinderella of soccer...Today everybody's enjoying it, but nobody remembers how it all started. Kim started it all" at a time when black girls didn't really play soccer. According to sister, Kacey, while their Mom originally wanted them to play more "girly girl sports," soccer was what the siblings were into, so "Kim led the way" and Mom was incredibly supportive. And while Kim tore it up on the field (first for George Mason University and then the USWNT), she's never hung up her cleats because for her, the game is a means to serve. As the Outreach Program Director, Wilmington Hammerheads Youth Football Club and more recently Founder and CEO of her nonprofit, Outreach for Cape Fear, Kim has used soccer to support thousands of youth. Her nonprofit bridges the gap for disadvantaged and at-risk youth in Southeastern North Carolina through soccer and mentorship. As Kim shares, "Soccer has been my tool for reaching people and my overarching calling is service." This rings true to sister, Kacey, who shares, "our mother raised us with great integrity in finding your sense of purpose, and then passing that on to others." Kim was inducted into the Virginia-DC Hall of Fame (2016), received the Black Soccer Coaches Advocacy Group Award of Excellence (2018), Centennial NAACP Youth Services Award (2019), and the Youth Coach of the Year Award (2021). Most recently in 2022, U.S. Soccer established an award in her name: The Kim Crabbe Game Changers Award celebrating diversity, inclusion, and belonging within the soccer community. Contributing guests include Kacey Crabbe Jefferson (Kim's sister), Laurie Curry (Kim's best friend), Richard White (Kim's Coach growing up), Wilbert Martinez (Coach Kim's soccer player), Jazmine Crabbe-Harris (Kim's daughter), Samuel Okpodu (longtime friend and soccer leader), Sully Hamid (longtime friend), and Lisa Pittaro (George Mason and USWNT teammate). Today, we welcome Jim Roberts to the podcast.  Jim is a familiar name in the Charlotte area startup and investor ecosystem.  Today, Jim runs the Wilmington Angels for Local Entrepreneurs (WALE), Network for Entrepreneurs in Wilmington (NEW), and his own consulting firm, Rojo Octo Ecosystem Consulting. Yet, in 2000, he started a non-profit ecosystem in Charlotte before moving to Ashville to start their startup ecosystem and angel network.  From there Jim was recruited to work for the Department of Commerce's International Trade Division in Raleigh.  In 2013 he moved to Wilmington to start UNCW's Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE).  The CIE offers programs, services, and activities to promote and support entrepreneurship and the creation of innovative new ventures in Southeastern North Carolina. Jim has been around the entrepreneur ecosystem since it's infancy and has helped get several cities off the ground.  It was a great opportunity for him to talk about how Wilmington has – and continues to develop/support the startup ecosystem. Jim talks through the difference of what WALE does verses NEW.  NEW holds free monthly events for a wide variety of entrepreneurs, investors, professional service providers, and community supporters considering entrepreneurship. The mission of NEW is to make the Wilmington region a more nurturing community for local startup entrepreneurs to improve and diversify the regional economy. WALE on the other hand is a platform for local angels to invest in Wilmington area startups.  Jim also dives into the reason why he started WALE, why it is important is to local entrepreneurs and how people (even Charlotte area people) can become members. I also wanted to talk with Jim a little about the differences of working in Raleigh and Wilmington. We also dive into how UNCW's Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship built an innovation organization in 8 years that has been globally ranked.  He explains how they started the ecosystem in the Coastal corridor and their success stories of their first conference. Jim discussed his excitement about the PBS Start-Up Series being filmed in Wilmington.  At the end of the podcast, we discuss the future of Wilmington's ecosystem. Anyone who has talked with Jim knows he has worked tirelessly across NC to build startup communities.  It is great to see the Wilmington area getting more than its fair share of press thanks to Jim's hard work in putting the city on the map.   William Bissett is the owner of and an Investment Advisor Representative of Portus Wealth Advisors, a Registered Investment Adviser. Registration does not imply a certain level of skill or training. Seven years before the Boston Tea Party and a decade before the Continental Congress signed the Declaration of Independence, the residents of the Cape Fear launched one of the earliest armed revolts against the British crown. With the passage of the Stamp Act in 1765, the colonists in Southeastern North Carolina decided enough was enough with the oppressive British rule. They staged massive protests in the streets in Wilmington and ultimately led an armed revolt against the Royal Authority in Brunswick Town, an early act of sedition that would grow to inspire a full revolution. In this special Cape Fear Unearthed conversation timed with July 4th, host Hunter Ingram and Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site manager Jim McKee recount the Stamp Act rebellion, addressing why the Cape Fear became the epicenter of the resistance and how the act of protesting was as innately American then as it is in 2020. Ever wondered if you could make the transition from Buyer's Agent to Mega Listing Agent? In this episode, Jeff Lesley shares how he made the transition from overworked buyer's agent to a listing controlled business AND how he is now only earning more income while enjoying more time off. The best thing about Jeff is that is explains how simple the transition is when you make the commitment. If you're not getting those initial listings and the price reductions upfront when the inventory doesn't sell, you're just going to be sitting dead in the water. - Jeff Lesley Takeaways - To make a successful transition, you need to be consistent and disciplined. You must also lead generate every day, or no one is going to hire you. - Keep it simple and track your leads carefully. Sometimes it's as easy as buying index cards. - Perfectionism can sometimes hinder you. If a method doesn't work for you, change it. Don't give up on it altogether. We started off with the story of Jeff's own transition from a buyer’s agent to a listing agent and how he realized his potential. Jeff shared that his profitability decreased initially and we explained why this is normal and it's the beginning to quantum growth. Afterwards, Jeff explained how he takes leveraging to the next level and why adopting new strategies and techniques really helps you level up. Jeff then discussed his experience with the hardest part of the transition and his own routine with building up a discipline with lead generation. From his experience, Jeff has learned to be very heavy on lead follow-up, as this has generated a lot of success for him in the past. Then, during a discussion about staffing, Jeff pointed out the importance of a good staffing structure and delegating tasks appropriately. Jeff then shared his plans for the future and how he wants work on both his prospecting and staffing culture, as he believes that will help him level up. Finally, we talked about how you can focus your efforts towards achieving your yearly goals. We also discussed:- Leveraging as a listing agent vs. leveraging as a buyer’s agent- How to overcome artificial ceilings- Discipline and persistence in lead generation- The importance of good customer service- Overcoming the ''this doesn't work for me'' mentality- Seeking a high return on time as the mark of an entrepreneur- Dominating a downward-trending market Any change will always come with setbacks in the beginning. If you only break even in your first days after transitioning, don't worry. This is a necessary step while you build your infrastructure and build new habits. Stay consistent and committed to the transition and success will follow. Guest Bio Jeff Lesley is an experienced realtor, who has lived and worked in Wilmington, North Carolina for 14 years. He has a vast knowledge of the local real estate market trends and he always puts the wellbeing and happiness of his clients first. With a Masters degree in Business from UNCW and with a wealth of experience, he is now an award-winning realtor with Century 21 Sweyer & Associates. Jeff is also a big fan of giving back and currently serves on the board for Special Olympics of New Hanover County. He is also an active volunteer in fundraising opportunities to help his local area.
