Don't you just love a great Space Dad?! In this episode of Dark Side Divas we discuss the Star Wars Rebels episode "Legacy" (s2e11). Before we jump into the episode we have a discussion around George Lucas's recent comments (or delusions) about his treatment of women in Star Wars. For the Ghost Crew, Ezra sees a vision about his parents and The Empire is about to attack Phoenix Squadron. Listen to the episode to see what the divas think about the episode. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) look “Through the Looking Glass” as we return to the Mirror Universe. We take a Marxist reading on the mirror universe, contrast sexual liberation in the mirror universe and sexual repression in the prime universe and we talk about our favorite “Space Dad” having sex with his co-workers. Matthew asks if Mirror Jennifer is the biggest bootlicker to ever lick boots and Jo rants about dual wielding pistols. Superman has been a patriotic force on the big screen seemingly forever, but Richard Donner and his team did it best in 1978. Except for Superman II, none of the sequels or reboots hold any kind of candle to Donner's Supes, especially when it comes to the ways in which Christopher Reeve chose to play him. He's great when he's Superman, but greater at playing Clark Kent. No one else has ever come close. This, of course, is a film with Marlon Brando as Space Dad, Gene Hackman as the arch rival and Margot Kidder as the lovable love interest, yet this flick belongs to the newcomer Reeve. As for the story, there are some flaws in logic, even considering this story is such a fantasy to begin with. After all, we're talking about an alien boy scout who gets sick around rocks from his home planet, yet tries his time-travelling best to stop a violent land swindler from destroying Hollywood. Anyway, Ryan is working alone on this one---and talking about most of the Kal-El movies---but the focus is on the blockbuster from 45 years ago in this, the 521st fast fly of Have You Ever Seen. Update about the Henry Cavill Superman films: reviews for Man Of Steel, Batman v Superman and the theatrical cut of Justice League were not very good and, while they didn't exactly bomb at the box office, they certainly weren't the mega-hits that Warner Brothers expected. Also, Kirk Alyn and Noel Neill played Clark & Lois in the 1940s Superman "serial", not "sequel". Coffee much? If you drink it, be a Sparkplug Coffee customer. GOODBYE, SPACE DAD. Bryan and Kristen get together to say goodbye to Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the Enterprise-D in the series finale of Star Trek: Picard. Is it a fitting end to the longest parasocial relationship of Bryan's life? Does Kristen dig the backdoor Star Trek: Legacy pilot season 3 Executive Producer Terry Matalas snuck in there? Picard fights to rescue Jack from the clutches of the Borg Queen while Seven & Raffi enlist the aid of the few remaining Olds aboard the Titan to retake the ship and defend space dock from the networked fleet. Hi guys,Today I'm launching another podcast called "The Orange Space" for mens mental health and wanted you to be the first to hear about it. If you know someone who would benefit from The Orange Space then please share it with them. Especially with everything going on in the world at the moment with interest rate rises, redundancy, cost of living and just being a guy in 2023. So if you're just interested in learning more about men's mental health, I invite you to join me on this new journey. I'm not expert just a regular guy who has struggled privately with my own mental health battles and want to shed some light on this important issue. Thanks for listening, and I hope to see you in "The Orange Space" soon. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ben and Mark turn their attention to the teachers of Coal Hill School as they look at 'The Caretaker' and 'The Rescue'. One story features two kindly teachers specialised in history and chemistry whilst the other focuses on two teachers who, whilst romantically involved, have neither. Amanda and Jenn discuss books about the arts, kid-friendly audiobooks, Victorian-esque reads, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by Book Riot Insiders, Penguin Random House Audio, and Flatiron Books, publishers of Frankie. Questions 1. I love your show! I was really getting into a slump of only reading the highly marketed books. You help me broaden my bookshelf so thanks! My husband and I recently start "reading" books together. He listens to the audio book because he is a busy MA student and drives a lot while I enjoy reading physically. We just finished Bird Box and both really enjoyed it! My husband is the finicky reader. He enjoys Stephen King and thrillers. We have Dark Matter by Blake Crouch on our to read list. I tried recommending Into the Drowning Deep, but the mermaids were too far (even though I think he would love it). We would like recommendations for thrillers/suspense with some supernatural happenings and at least one likeable/smart character. He has read most of Stephen King where as I really enjoy fantasy novels. I can do most horror/suspense. Sci Fi could be doable if it had the right characters. Please stay in the adult category as my husband does not enjoy "teen angst". Side note: I would just need a trigger warning for violence against women and children (which you always provide). Thank you in advance! --Kyla and Kyle 2. I would love ideas for books that are relationship focused but have intellectual conversation, like my favorite movies - Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight. What I love about those is that you feel so much intimacy and tension - the way one tiny thing could make everything fall apart. I have On Chesil Beach on my radar already. Normal People by Sally Rooney also came close to what I'm hoping for. --Jenny 3. Hi Ladies! Love the podcast! I have loved the Dana Stabenow, Kate Shugak mysteries. Though I love her series, I would love a recommendation for a Native American own voices author from Alaska or North Western Canada. I prefer fiction, and it does not have to be a mystery. --Jessie 4. I’m looking for recommendations for my school’s book club. We are a group of high school educators who enjoy reading broadly, so we have tried to have books that delve into different departments’ interests like The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (science) or Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi (History). I would love some book recommendations where the text is heavily influenced by art or music to better represent those departments. Bonus points for diverse authors or perspectives! In the past we have also loved Station Eleven, Enrique’s Journey, The Nightingale, Educated and The Storied Life of AJ Fikry. Thanks in advance for your help! --Sarah 5. Hi! I've recently discovered audio books as an excellent way to get more books in my life on my commute every morning. I drop my kids off at two different places and I'm usually in the car for about an hour. My difficulty is finding something that I enjoy but is also appropriate for my kids to listen to, they are 2 1/2 and 4 but are VERY observant and like to mimic what they hear. So far I've listened to Blackout by Connie Willis and the The Girl in the Tower by Katherine Arden. I love fantasy, sci-fi, historical fiction, and mystery. Any recommendations you have would be awesome, thank you! --Heather 6. My dad loves traditional sci-fi. Heinlein is his favorite author ever, but he also enjoys Zelazny, Asimov, etc. I'm hoping to find new authors for him, and have had some success with the Expanse, The Martian, and with books by Elizabeth Moon. However, the Vorkosigan books, the Murderbot Diaries, Red Mars, and the Honor Harrington books all fell flat for him. Do you have suggestions for modern books in the classic sci-fi style? --Books for Space Dad 7. Hiii! :) I'm wondering if you know of any books similar to the Victorian "sensation novels" such as Lady Audley's Secret, Wilkie Collins' books etc, but which reflect modern values. I find I'm completely charmed by the trope that I call "mild mannered Victorian gentleman reluctantly and/or accidentally solves a crime," that isn't gritty or over the top but still has a lot of unforseen twists; however, I've grown so tired of books that only have white straight characters. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! --Mild Mannered Modern Reader Books Discussed The Dead Duke, His Secret Wife, and the Missing Corpse by Piu Marie Eatwell Broken Monsters by Lauren Beukes (TW: violence against women and children (and everyone)) Stephen King read-alikes episode My Soul to Keep by Tananarive Due (TW: graphic violence, harm to women and children) The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer A Separation by Katie Kitamura Two Old Women by Velma Wallis Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice (rec’d by Jessica and Michelle) Nocturnes by Kazuo Ishiguro Blood, Water, Paint by Joy McCullough (tw: rape) The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal Waypoint Kangaroo by Curtis C. Chen The Impossible Girl by Lydia Kang (rec’d by Jamie C) Daughter of Mystery by Heather Rose Jones (rec’d by Jenn's friend Ellen)
Marc and Greg were actually TOGETHER at RetroCon 2018, for only the 3rd time ever! And what an occasion for the hosts of Let's Voltron: The Official Voltron Podcast to combine like Voltron! We are honored to have RetroCon interviews and panel coverage with BJ Ward (Allura and Haggar - Voltron: DOTU and Voltron: The Third Dimension) and Garry Chalk (Sky Marshall Wade and Manset - Voltron Force)! RetroCon takes place in the fall in Oaks, PA, at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center every year, thanks to the organizers and founders, Rose and Tony Tuski (far left, kneeling, above picture), and a slew of volunteers. Thanks to Rose and Tony, who invited special guests, BJ Ward and Garry Chalk, we now have a couple interviews with voice actors from 3 previous Voltron series, prior to Voltron Legendary Defender, which makes this whole podcast a Retro Voltron segment! BJ Ward, who has a 40-year career in voice acting, opera singing, and children's book writing (Farty Marty), is best known for her roles as Scarlet from G.I. Joe, Allura and Haggar from Voltron: Defender of the Universe, and Velma from Scooby-Doo, among hundreds more. Garry Chalk, who has just as long a career as BJ, in both live-action and animated series and movies, is best known as Optimus Prime and Optimus Primal in Transformers: Cybertron and Transformers: Beast Wars, and also as Insp. Andrew Pawlachuk in Cold Squad, and Man at Arms in Masters of the Universe (He-Man), but we remember his roles as Sky Marshall Wade and Manset from Voltron Force the best. We are very honored to have been able to have spent some time with both BJ Ward and Garry Chalk to talk about their amazing careers, and to hang out with other Voltron fans while we enjoyed RetroCon weekend in Oaks, PA. Pixel Dan, another guest of Rose and Tony, has reviewed lots of Voltron toys on his YouTube Channel. We were happy to meet him at RetroCon! On Saturday, we had a blast hanging out with Mel (@melmeiko), who we met for the first time, even though she's been on the podcast a few times. And, on Sunday, we hung out with Windy C. (@windsweptzariel), another fan we've known from social media and the podcast, but had never physically met before. We also met Nicole Schatten for the first time, whom we've known as a big Voltron fan from Facebook. There were also lots of Voltron merchandise for sale by vendors at RetroCon, and Marc picked up a Trendmasters Cyber Sentinel Voltron for $5, and a Trendmasters Allura figure from Voltron: The Third Dimension, which he had signed by BJ Ward. Greg picked up the Holy Grail of 2 scripts signed by the cast of the original Voltron series, personally donated by Neil Ross (Keith/Pidge) for charity. He also had BJ Ward's book, Farty Marty, signed by the author herself! Overall, RetroCon was a ton of fun! We didn't win any of the raffle prizes that were given away both days, but there were some cool Voltron prizes available! The winner of the adult costume contest at RetroCon was Quicksilver, the leader of the Silverhawks from the cartoon of the same name. Here he is, pictured, below: We also want to share with you Josh Keaton's VLOG from NYCC. We got a little choked up watching it, because it has meant so much to us that Josh Keaton is our Shiro and our Space Dad, and he is going to miss recording Shiro and going out to promote the show as much as we've enjoyed watching the show and meeting him at the cons. Thank you so much for sharing this with us, Josh! Here is that link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C74YwlXrWL4 "Dungeons and Voltron" is making its final quest at the Let's Voltron store! In 10 days, this awesome mashup design is retiring, and will no longer be available in our store. So, this is your last chance to get this amazing design by K-Lionheart, and at an awesome price - only $15! https://www.teepublic.com/campaign/248-dungeons-and-voltron-retiring-campaign/t-shirt?ref_id=5313 As Always, Thank you for Listening! Action Comics #1000 is out this Wednesday (at 12:01am). How many covers do you plan to buy? Are you ready for the Bendis era of Superman? Superman’s past 5 years have been kind of rocky… Nick Spencer and Ryan Ottley’s Amazing Spider-Man looks like it’s going to be great. Their Free Comic Book Day issue is a lot of fun, as is Jason Aaron’s Avengers. Don’t miss these new series. Also, Oni’s Shadow Roads and Transformers Unicron. Catching up on new comic announcements, such as the new creative team and cast for Astonishing X-Men and Joëlle Jones’ Catwoman ongoing. This week’s Domino #1 is wonderful, fun, and a solid book about female friendships. Planning a hypothetical signing on a holiday. Hypothetical. The most adorable bat-symbol we’ve ever seen.
SHIRONANIGANS! It's all about Shiro and it was named by the fans! We have a great time with Josh Keaton, talking about the evolution of Shiro through 4 seasons of Voltron Legendary Defender on Netflix, and then Josh answers tons of questions submitted by the fans, and at the end, Josh picks our Shironanigans Prize Pack winner! SHIRONANIGANS! Josh Keaton, who has voiced Shiro, Sven, and Bi-Boh-Bi on Voltron Legendary Defender has joined us for a second time on Let's Voltron: The Official Voltron Podcast. And this time, it's to celebrate everything Shiro with a special podcast named by the fans, called SHIRONANIGANS! Like Allurapalooza!, we wanted to honor Shiro, and what better way than to have our fellow Voltron fans submit name suggestions for this special podcast. We received over 1000 suggestions, and we narrowed them down to 4. Then, in a special poll on Twitter and Facebook, we had fans vote between Shironanigans, The Shiro Show, SuperShiroCelebrationSpaceDadStravaganza, and Shiromania! Josh Keaton, the amazing voice actor who plays Shiro in Voltron Legendary Defender, joins us as a guest to talk about everything Shiro and Voltron, and he answers all your fan questions. Also, Greg and Marc review Episode 2 - Some Assembly Required. Josh Keaton has had a terrific career as a voice actor, and has even been able to work with some of his heroes in the business that he grew up idolizing. In this podcast, we talk to Josh about the process it took for him to become Shiro, and how he continues to use real life to inspire him to be the Space Dad that everyone has come to call him on social media. If you were one of the fans that asked Josh a question on Facebook or Twitter, be sure to listen carefully, because Josh probably answered your question. Also in this podcast, Marc points out that Voltron Legendary Defender #1 by Lion Forge Comics is coming out on Wednesday, July 13th. CraveOnline.Com has an exclusive story, which includes some preview pages from that first issue of the series written by Tim Hedrick and Mitch Iverson. We also want to let people know that Voltron.com is having a contest to win a trip to Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The details are on Voltron.com and you can enter each day until August 31st. And last but certainly not least, Greg and Marc review the entire 2nd Episode of Voltron Legendary Defender, Some Assembly Required. This is the episode where the 5 Paladins must learn to become a team, so they can Form Voltron, and learn how to fight together should they ever have to face Emperor Zarkon and the evil Galra Empire. We hope you enjoy conversations about Star Trek: The Next Generation. Because this is that!
With San Diego Comic-Con mere days away, the mystery, hinting, and oblique teasing is reaching a fever pitch, with not only the main players on Doctor Who’s creative team storming Hall H on Thursday, July 9, but also a Titan Comics panel to whet your fannish interest, along with toys, exclusives and all manner of madness for the Three Who Rule to weigh in on. Next week we’ll have friend of the show and rakish flaneur Kyle Anderson calling in from SDCC to give us all the news on Series 9 and the all important State of Capaldi’s Bouffant, but for now, enjoy an interview with comedian, Doctor Who enthusiast and fine fellow Toby Hadoke about his new BBC radio play, “The Dad Who Fell To Earth”! Check out the show notes at http://www.radiofreeskaro.com
Season 5 Episode 8: Stylin' Steve and Shannon banter about a host of things, including Steve's Road Trip, what a "Screech In" is, and some Colin Baker gushing. They follow that with the Motes of News, followed by a detailed review of the episode; The Caretaker.
"I'm the new caretaker. John Smith... most people just call me the Doctor." Skilled exponent of the deep cover persona, the Doctor wields a broom and a non-sonic screwdriver in his new-found role as The Caretaker. Naturally, this makes life very difficult for the peripatetic Clara and her new (but already long-suffering) beau, Mr Danny Pink. A Skovox Blitzer is whizzing around disarming policemen and vandalising school property but the real fireworks happen in the TARDIS when Smith-Oswald-Pink triangle finally comes together and seemingly blows instantly apart. Danny gives Clara an ultimatum (surely flowers are more romantic?), Courtney defiles the time-space machine with her disruptive effluence, and Space Dad gets proprietorial over his impossible little princess. But does all this a decent Doctor Who episode make? Listen in to hear what Jim and Rob make of it all.
