According to Rich Steinle, CEO of Carium, many healthcare organizations haven't created a culture of "my health is every day" even though many of the DIY approaches to health like wearables are being fully embraced by patients. This type of proactive monitoring of their health indicates that patients want to be more engaged and involved in their care. In fact, trends like these indicate that patients want to shift away from the model of care where care is confined to the four walls of a clinic or hospital. Instead, they want to use advanced virtual care technologies that can support their health on a daily basis. This is particularly true for patients with chronic illnesses. In this video, Steinle and CTO Scott Pradels discuss the barriers to remote patient monitoring technology adoption among both clinicians and patients. They explain that Carium is meant to be installed and adopted easily, not to be a "big IT project" or require consultants. Plus, as you'd imagine, Carium is thoughtfully using AI in their platform for things such as risk stratification which helps doctors better care for their patients remotely at scale. Nearly 75% of Americans are overweight, including 42% who have obesity. The pandemic has heightened the problem, since many of us find comfort in food, and delivery services like Door Dash and Uber Eats make it easier than ever to consume calories while barely getting off the couch to answer the door. This obesity epidemic has huge implications on value-based care due to the impact it has on chronic morbidity, increased mortality, and unrelenting demands on the utilization of limited healthcare resources. Chronic conditions associated with obesity include, but are not limited to, type-2 diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and heart disease. These diseases have a destructive effect on the US healthcare system, and leaders in value-based care must start thinking about lifestyle medicine and evidence-based nutrition interventions. While there are many apps and tools for consumers or patients to use to lose weight on their own, programs that incorporate medically-assisted weight management and obesity care yield the best outcomes. Rather than weight loss as a sidebar suggestion once a disease state is diagnosed, weight loss can be a potent catalyst for disease prevention within value-based care. Dr. Jamy Ard is the Co-Director of the Weight Management Center at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist. Joining him this week in the Race to Value is Rich Steinle, CEO of Carium – a technology company that partners with clinicians to offer a complete, virtual care platform ensuring every person – regardless of location, demographic or disease state – has access to quality, personalized care, education, and tools to support health and wellness goals. In this episode, we discuss the importance of partnerships between healthcare providers and technology companies to empower clinicians, patients, and their caregivers. Do you want to learn more about how real-time, aggregated health data and analytics can guide clinical decision-making in obesity? Well, this is an interview that you will not want to miss. Within a platform-enabled, virtual care ecosystem, weight management care teams can achieve positive outcomes that deliver on the promise of value-based care! Adding chronic diseases make obesity a $1 Trillion problem! 06:00 Dr. Ard speaks to the economic challenges of obesity – “Obesity is a multifocal chronic relapsing disorder. It is a disease epidemic that can be addressed through patient engagement.” 07:00 The limitations of medical education in training doctors on nutrition and how to effectively treat and manage patient obesity. 08:30 Dr. Ard discusses the Weight Management Center at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist and the challenges with patient engagement in an obesogenic environment. 09:00 The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on societal obesity and how technology empowers an effective patient engagement strategy. 10:00 Rich discusses the diametrically opposed reality that treating obesity is typically conducted as a prescription upon the onset of chronic disease (instead of as a prevention). 11:30 How technology can extend team-based care to provide a conduit for meaning patient engagement and treatment interventions. 12:00 Technology can be leveraged to address community health and equity, especially for patients living in food deserts. 13:00 How can a trusting business partnership between a care delivery organization and a technology company...

An illegal immigrant who has been deported five times was sentenced on Monday to time already served over a federal weapons charge related to his acquittal of murder in the 2015 shooting death of San Francisco woman Kate Steinle. Jose Inez Garcia-Zarate is facing deportation to his native Mexico after a federal judge in California sentenced him to the seven years he has already spent in jail — bringing an end to the case that sparked a firestorm over immigration and sanctuary cities. “If you return to this country again and you are back in front of me, I will not spare you. Let this be your last warning: Do not return to this country,” US District Judge Vince Chhabria said during his sentencing hearing. Steinle, 32, was shot dead while she was walking along San Francisco's crowded Pier 14 with her dad and a friend on July 4, 2015. Garcia-Zarate, who was in the US illegally and had already been deported five times, admitted to accidentally firing the gun. He said he'd found it under a bench, but didn't know it was a firearm because it was wrapped up in a T-shirt. The gun fired when Garcia-Zarate picked it up and officials said the bullet ricocheted off the ground before striking the victim. https://nypost.com/2022/06/07/illegal-immigrant-cleared-in-kate-steinle-death-gets-time-served-for-gun-charge/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Randall shows Chris some of Hitler's favorite artists, and some of Hitler's own paintings. *** Download slides here: https://mega.nz/file/VpllnD4D#hy3_24eqWYTHTM3SR3x2XNOACkZ57XmwC5_8kBd1a0I *** Hitler's favorite fine artists according to Albert Speer: 1) Eduard von Grützner 2) Wilhelm Leibl 3) Hans Thoma 4) Hans Makart 5) Carl Spitzweg 6) Arno Breker 7) Paris Bordone 8) Titian 9) Anselm Feuerbach (Nana) 10) Giovanni Paolo Panini 11) Eduard von Steinle *** In the book, The Mind of Adolf Hitler, Hanisch reports: "He (Hitler) was never an ardent worker, was unable to get up in the morning, had difficulty in getting started, and seemed to be suffering from a paralysis of the will."[6] *** This episode based on Inside the Third Reich, 1970 edition, first US printing You may read a different edition online here: https://archive.org/details/Inside_the_Third_Reich_Albert_Speer ... p43 One of Hitler's as well as Hoffman's favorite painters was Eduard Grützner... ... For all departments of art Hitler regarded the late nineteenth century as one of the greatest cultural epochs in human history. That is was not yet recognized as such, he said, was only because we were too close to it in time. But his appreciation stopped at Impressionism, whereas the naturalism of a Leibl or a Thoma suited his activistic approach to art. Makart ranked highest; he also thought highly of Spitzweg. In this case I could understand his feeling, although what he admired was not so much the bold and often impressionistic brushwork as the staunch middle-class genre quality, the affable humor with which Spitzweg gently mocked the small-town Munich of his period. ... p90 Along the opposite wall stood a massive chest containing built-in speakers, and adorned by a large bronze bust of Richard Wagner by Arno Breker. Above this hung another tapestry which concealed the movie screen. Large oil paintings covered the walls: a lady with exposed bosom ascribed to Bordone, a pupil of Titian; a picturesque reclining nude said to be by Titian himself; Feuerbach's Nana in a very handsome frame; an early landscape by Spitzweg; a landscape of Roman ruins by Pannini; and surprisingly, a kind of altar painting by Eduard von Steinle, one of the Nazarene group, representing King Henry, founder of cities. But there was no Grützner. Hitler occasionally let if be known that he had paid for these paintings out of his own income. ... Occasionally the movies were discussed, Hitler commenting mainly on the female actors and Eva Braun on the males. No one took the trouble to raise the conversation above the level of trivialities by, for example, remarking on any of the new trends in directing. Of course the choice of films scarcely allowed for any other approach, for they were all standard products of the entertainment industry. Such experiments of the period as Curt Ortel's Michelangelo film were never shown, at least not when I was there. ... Later, during the war, Hitler gave up the evening showings, saying that he wanted to renounce his favorite entertainment "out of sympathy for the privations of the soldiers." Instead records were played. But although the record collection was excellent, Hitler always preferred the same music. Neither baroque nor classical music, neither chamber music nor symphonies, interested him. Before long the order of the records became virtually fixed. First he wanted a few bravura selections from Wagnerian operas, to be followed promptly with operettas. That remained the pattern. Hitler made a point of trying to guess the names of the sopranos and was pleased when he guessed right, as he frequently did. ... p27 To decorate the Goebbels house I borrowed a few watercolors by Nolde from Eberhard Hanfstaengl, the director of the Berlin National Gallery. Goebbels and his wife were delighted with the paintings—until Hitler cane to inspect and expressed his severe disapproval. Then the minister summoned me immediately: "The pictures have to go at once; they're simply impossible!" ... p42 Thus, in the realm of architecture, as in painting and sculpture, Hitler really remained arrested in the world of his youth: the world of 1880 to 1910, which stamped its imprint on his artistic taste as on his political and ideological conceptions. *** Topics discussed include: Rudolf von Alt birth of the modern world Reich Culture Chamber Abstract art Emil Nolde Eduard von Grützner Wilhelm Leibl Hans Thoma Hans Makart Carl Spitzweg Arno Breker Richard Wagner Paris Bordone Titian Anselm Feuerbach (Nana) Reich Culture Chamber The Degenerate Art Exhibition Jazz Swing Kids (1993) Fraktur https://chrisandrandall.com/ep32-does-art-influence-the-public-mind-part-3-of-3-authoritarians-and-the-cias-art-war *** Timeline: 1863 -- Salon de Refuses 1910 -- First abstract painting 1914 -- WWI 1919 -- Bauhaus founded 1933 -- Hitler attains power in Germany 1933 -- Reich Culture Chamber established with Goebbels in charge ... Goebbels and some others believed that the forceful works of such artists as Emil Nolde, Ernst Barlach and Erich Heckel exemplified the Nordic spirit; as Goebbels explained, "We National Socialists are not un-modern; we are the carrier of a new modernity, not only in politics and in social matters, but also in art and intellectual matters."[14] However, a faction led by Rosenberg despised Expressionism, leading to a bitter ideological dispute which was settled only in September 1934, when Hitler declared that there would be no place for modernist experimentation in the Reich. Also outlawed Jazz and the font Fraktur ... 1933 -- Bauhaus closes ... The Nazi movement, from nearly the start, denounced the Bauhaus for its "degenerate art", and the Nazi regime was determined to crack down on what it saw as the foreign, probably Jewish, influences of "cosmopolitan modernism".[1] ... 1937 -- The Degenerate Art Exhibition ... Hitler had been an artist before he was a politician—but the realistic paintings of buildings and landscapes that he preferred had been dismissed by the art establishment in favor of abstract and modern styles. So the Degenerate Art Exhibition was his moment to get his revenge. He had made a speech about it that summer, saying "works of art which cannot be understood in themselves but need some pretentious instruction book to justify their existence will never again find their way to the German people". *** recorded April 21, 2022 *** Visit us at https://chrisandrandall.com/

This is part 2 of my talk with Dan Steinle. The first talk is a good primer for this episode when we dive into his style of imagery and the kinds of photography he does: street, photojournalism, editorial and sport. If you haven't listened to that one, he is a freelance photojournalist who has been pretty immersed in the year of the protest covering both sides and being fair, in my opinion, to the whole story. To learn more, stop, go listen to Part 1 and come back to this one. This talk focuses on January 6th, 2021 and upon his experiences being at the Capitol on the day of the insurrection. He goes into great detail about the scene and how it unfolded for him and how the mood and tone and tenor shifted throughout the day. Tear-gassed at one point he stayed with the moment. He discovered some astonishing things that day and sat to share it. He also discussed the Inauguration for which he returned to DC a week later.I still can't believe that Dan was there. I mean there's documenting history - a ‘Cross National Championships or an Olympics - but then there's a moment that causes a shift in thinking around the country; one that will be discussed for years to come. And Dan is so fair … while he may have his sympathies, he covers the whole story. “No mud, No lotus” as it is said … I'm so grateful he volunteered to sit for a follow-up. He won't ever tell you, but it's been very hard to process what he's been through and I hope this helped him a bit. This was a hard talk for him and one that he cancelled a few times as he was and is still emotionally processing and dealing with what he experienced that day. I hope you appreciate his insights and his courage. Next show we sit and hang out with one of the best humans in all of cyclocross. Her name simply captures her spirit. Stay Tuned. Episode 5 of “The Cross Section Podcast” is pretty unique in the sense that this is Part One of a conversation with one of my good friends - the freelance photojournalist, Daniel Steinle who has been deeply involved with covering the protests in Portland and other places around the country from the earliest days in May and he is still at it. Part 2, tentatively titled, “January 6th” will air a few days from now and it's a pretty amazing tale! To get a glimpse of his work go to his website or check out his Instagram: @catdaddypdx.If you're into photography and art, buckle in because we take a deep dive on film vs digital photography, what constitutes a photograph, approaches to and the dangers of covering protest events, the goals of and the ethics of street photography and photojournalism. In short, we cover a lot of ground. In addition to being a deep-thinker, serious artist, and well-travelled person, Daniel is one of the most committed and courageous photographers I know. If you've ever been curious about what it's like to cover the protests and what the scene is really like, this is a good one to tune into. This episode of “The Cross Section” is brought to you by no one in particular so I'll just throw out a plug for Don't Shoot PDX - which is an organization that I believe in and have donated to over the years. To quote their website: “Don't Shoot Portland is a Black-led human rights nonprofit that advocates for accountability. Since 2014, we have implemented art, education and civic participation within our programming to create social change.” Thanks so much for taking some time out of your life today and I hope you had as good of a time as I did with this one. Follow me on Instagram @dcmediahaus and also sign up, download, rate, review and subscribe wherever you source your podcasts so you'll always know when a new show drops. Stay Safe. And just keep pedaling. And remember, there is a Part 2 … and trust me … wow. So for the week we hang with Daniel Steinle. I think you'll like both of these!Content Warning: A small handful of curse words by both host and guest (but mostly by the host).
With Donald Trump verbally capitulating to Vladimir Putin during the Helsinki summit July 16, the Russia investigation heating up, and Special Counsel Robert Mueller investigating the NRA for potential money laundering for the benefit of Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, Trump is clearly embroiled in a great deal of controversy. But in the face of it, Trump tells the American people to believe him over the facts that are publicly available. Evangelical leaders are also steering their flock toward belief in Trump - elevating their defenses of Trump over the Bible they state is inerrant. Will there come a time where Trump Christians will have a moment of clarity and decide that their deal with the devil is untenable? Vicious Circle Now Complete. A San Francisco jury renders "not guilty" verdict against the illegal alien who killed Kate Steinle. We review the responses of the Steinle family and examine the Sanctuary City policies that are putting Californians at risk. Why are many on the Left proud of this verdict? Time to build "Kate's Wall," we say. Meanwhile, President Trump scorches NBC's Joe Scarborough with a tweet about an "unsolved mystery" that took place in Florida "years ago." We look into the mysterious death of a Scarborough intern back in 2001, and ask why Scarborough resigned from Congress shortly thereafter. Responding to the devastatingly timed presidential tweet, a shaken Scarborough claims Trump has "dementia." Also, we look deeper into the FBI's Peter Strzok, the Trump-hating FBI agent dismissed from Team Mueller. What was the pro-Hillary Strzok's role in investigating Hillary's emails? And what was Strzok's involvement with British spy Christopher Steele, of the infamous Trump Dossier? Looking bad for Mueller here, and the FBI as well. Plus, the Senate passes the GOP Tax Cuts bill, Roy Moore appears headed for victory in Alabama, and we offer a vignette from philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer. With Listener Calls & Music via The Primitives, The Beatles and Camper Van Beethoven. Sacred Song from Johnny Cash. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
