Chris Bostock; JoBoxers, Style Council and Dave Stewart; The life of a Bass Guitar PlayerChris Bostock is an English musician, songwriter, and music producer, best known as the bassist for the 1980s new wave band JoBoxers. Born in Bristol in 1962, Bostock began his musical journey with classical piano at age six before transitioning to guitar and bass. He was a founding member of The Stingrays and later joined The X-Certs, both integral to Bristol's vibrant punk and new wave scenes in the late 1970s.In 1980, Bostock became part of the second incarnation of Subway Sect, managed by Bernard Rhodes (The Clash manager). This collaboration led to the formation of JoBoxers, whose blend of funk, soul, and ska produced hits like "Boxerbeat" and "Just Got Lucky," the latter reaching No. 7 on the UK charts and No. 31 in the US. Bostock co-wrote several of the band's tracks, contributing significantly to their distinctive sound.Beyond JoBoxers, Bostock's career includes work with The Style Council, Spear of Destiny, and forming The Spiritual Cowboys with Dave Stewart of Eurythmics fame. His versatile musicianship and collaborative spirit have made him a respected figure in the music industry.Don't forget to like, subscribe, and share your thoughts on Madonna's influence in thecomments below!✅ Important Links:

Rob Green in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.musicglue.com/the-fallen-leaves/ THE FALLEN LEAVES was formed in 2004 by Rob Green (Rob built himself a reputation singing at Bernie Rhodes' “Club Left” and by performing with Vic Godard's Subway Sect, notably supporting Siouxsie & The Banshees at the Music Machine in '80), and by original '76-'78 Subway Sect guitarist/founding member Rob Symmons whose distinctive discordant, stinging guitar sound was one of the defining features of the original Subway Sect which he formed with best friend Godard. Symmons & Green share a love of 60's garage music, and ever-so stylish vintage suits. THE FALLEN LEAVES' recordings are alive, heated and humming - preferring as they do to use vintage valve amps & mics, and recording live with no overdubs and minimal technology. They hark back to DIY punk days and concentrate on delivering impressive songs and performances.

It's a very Beatles-heavy episode, but Robin and Alasdair also talk about Madness, Boards of Canada, Burial and Subway Sect, and many other musicians who helped Alasdair to develop and expand his songwriting. There is also some chat about music theory, particularly relating to chord progressions, and the idea of songwriting being a combination of technical understanding and instinct. Also, what connects The Clientele and The Great British Bake Off? Simon Rivers in conversation with David Eastaugh - Part 2   Last Party formed in 1985, although their history stretches back to the band No Trains At The Bay, which the members formed at school in 1978, and who had a song called "The Last Party".[1] One of their earliest gigs was in support of The Sound, their original drummer Steve Infield being a housemate of The Sound's bass player Graham Bailey.[2] They released their debut album on their own Harvey label the following year. They were the support act at The Stone Roses' first London gig, at the Greyhound in Fulham, and were favourites with John Peel, recording two sessions for his BBC Radio 1 show, one on 1987 and a second in 1989.[3][4] In 1995, the band members at the time (singer Simon Rivers, bass player Daniel Ashkenazy, Kim Ashford, and Neil Palmer) decided on a new name, The Bitter Springs, changing their name "in the hope that journalists who had ignored the Last Party would give us another listen".[2] The debut release under this new name, the Addison Brothers EP, featured Vic Godard, and the Bitter Springs enjoyed a long association with Godard, acting as his backing band, the Subway Sect, for nine years, also contributing to studio recordings including Godard's Blackpool album, where Godard and the Bitter Springs provide musical backing to lyrics by Irvine Welsh.

Despite their inexperience, Subway Sect made a successful debut at the festival and were taken on by Clash manager Bernie Rhodes. They appeared with The Clash on the White Riot Tour in 1977 and released their debut single, "Nobody's Scared"/"Don't Split It", in March 1978. While recording their debut album at Gooseberry Studios, Rhodes suddenly fired the entire band except for Godard. Two tracks from the album's recording sessions, "Ambition"/"Different Story", were released by Rough Trade Records; the single was a major hit on the alternative charts. Godard re-formed Subway Sect in 1980 with new musicians and signed to MCA Records sublabel Oddball, releasing the album What's The Matter Boy? Following a summer tour with Buzzcocks, Subway Sect disbanded again. Guitarist Johnny Britten formed a rockabilly band with Chris Bostock, Sean McLusky, Rob Marche and DC Collard, but was soon forced to leave the group, at which point Godard stepped in to take his place. They recorded the album Songs For Sale in 1981, but were disappointed with the results and disbanded soon after; members of the band, without Godard, went on to form JoBoxers.[3] Godard also recorded an LP at Olympic Studios, called T.R.O.U.B.L.E., with a group of London jazz musicians known as Working Week, which was eventually released two years later by Rough Trade Records. In the mid-1980s, Godard retired from music and became a postman. In 1990, Godard wrote the song "Johnny Thunders", a tribute inspired by reading an obituary of the New York Dolls guitarist. It was recorded at the home of Paul Baker, a fellow postman. Godard also recorded ten other tracks and the recordings, with Paul Cook on drums, eventually became the album The End of the Surrey People. Produced by Edwin Collins, it was released on the Postcard Records label. Collins' group Orange Juice had made the Subway Sect song "Holiday Hymn" a feature of their set in the early 1980s. Later in the 1990s, Godard formed the band The Long Decline with Kenny Wisdom and Mark Perry. The band released an album on the Overground label before disbanding in 1998, but re-formed in 2000 with Godard, Wisdom, Lee McFadden, and Mina Sassoon, among others. Godard contributed guitar and some songwriting, but not lead vocals, In 1998, Godard released the album Long Term side-Effect on Tugboat Records.[3] A 2002 album recorded by Godard, Sansend, was released under the name Subway Sect, rather than his own.

Shock World Service 036 90% of Me is You by Jon Averill & Stephen Reynolds 21/07/10 Dublin, Ireland 1. The Human League - Get Carter Appearing as a brief Casio keyboard leitmotif on their classic 'Dare' album. The melody is from Roy Budd's jazzy, hypnotic soundtrack to the 1971 film of the same name. 2. This Mortal Coil - Song To The Siren This Mortal Coil was a supergroup of 4AD artists brought together by label boss Ivo Watts-Russell for an EP in 1983. Featuring members of Cocteau Twins, Modern English and Cindytalk they re-recorded a Modern English medley with this track, originally by Tim Buckley track as the b-side. 3. The Dynamics - 90% Of Me Is You Versions and excursions from France as The Dynamics inject some reggae and dub elements into Gwen McCrae's 1974 classic '90% Of Me Is You' 4. Morrissey & Siouxsie - Interlude A Lesser known collaboration between Siouxsie (of Siouxsie & The Banshees) and Morrissey. A fruitful but ultimately commercially unsuccessful alliance which was eventually released in 1994 but not promoted due the pair having a major fallout with regard track's promotional video. The song originally appears as 'Time Is Like A Dream' on the soundtrack to the 1968 film 'Interlude'. 5. Grace Jones - Warm Leatherette Throughout Grace Jones's extraordinary career she has always been shrewd with her musical choices. This track, a cover of The Normal's 'Warm Leatherette' is an anthesis to the original, dropping the visceral drum track and deadpan delivery for a more substantial groove. The Normal's'Warm Leatherette' originally appeared as the b-side to "T.V.O.D, the first release on Mute Records and heavily references J.G. Ballard's controversial 1973 symphorophilia based novel 'Crash'. 6. Montovani & His Orchestra - La Vie En Rose Fans of Grace Jones will be first to notice the connection here. 'La Vie En Rose' is another track to receive a Grace Jones reworking, perhaps even more radically than 'Warm Leatherette'. None of this however concerns us as Annunzio Paolo Mantovani and his orchestra are providing this podcasts version of 'La Vie En Rose'. This track may seem like a strange choice to some but I love the innocence and ardour that this piece of music exudes, next thing i'll be watching musicals... 7. Spiritualized - Born Never Asked 'Born Never Asked' appears on Spiritualized's 1995 album 'Pure Phase'. Strangely being a massive fan its only recently have I discovered the original version is by Laurie Anderson. This track is actually surprisingly short compared to Spriritualized's usual 15 minute opuses. 8. The Slits - Heard It Through The Grapevine The Slits were (initially) an all female band formed right at the inception of the punk movement, regularly supporting bands like The Clash, The Buzzcocks and Subway Sect. We consider The Slits raw and unrefined take on 'Heard It Through The Grapevine' second only to the unequaled Marvin Gaye's version and far surpasses the earlier clumsy Smokey Robinson version as well as other attempts by Credence Clearwater, Gladys Knight and of course Craig David. 9. Art Of Noise - Robinson Crusoe Art Of Noise haven't really done anything to the original track bar add some drums and a few effects but we're glad they did as it grants it official 'cover' status and therefore eligible for this podcast. 10. Lee Hazlewood - Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin On Lee Hazlewood has featured heavily on Shock World Service Podcasts over the years. His wry, sardonic sense of humour is never more present than in his brilliantly creepy version of 'Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin On'. The origins of this track are often disputed but its the 1957 rock and roll version by Jerry Lee Lewis that was most likely the progenitor for this cover.

I first put this mix together a few years ago when we were recording The Crabapples to show the engineer what kind of sounds we were looking for. I've wound up listening to it quite a bit since then though, and I think this batch of songs pretty well represents a lot of what inspired me to start the label and make music myself: smart, succinct tunes with equal measures of noise and melody, played with maximum passion and minimum nonsense. 1. The Mekons - Where Were You? (7", Fast Product, 1978) - A spiteful punk rock love song from these Leeds legends. I'll be a heretic and say they're not my favorite band of all time, but the two singles on Fast always do the business for me.2. Subway Sect - Nobody's Scared (7", Braik, 1978) - Abrasively amazing artifact is the only real document of Subway Sect's first incarnation. I can only imagine how great an album they could have made at the time, and the recently released 1978 album of re-recorded 1977/1978 tracks only leaves me wanting the real thing.3. Swell Maps - Another Song (A Trip To Marineville LP, Rough Trade, 1979) - The Swell Maps kind of epitomize for me the prolific experimentation and restless energy of the early Rough Trade days. A total, glorious mess.4. Henry's Dress - Over 21 (7", Slumberland, 1996) - Henry's Dress were my favorite band for years and their records still blow my mind. An amazing mix of a super-catchy song and crazy guitar and bass noise, this song is from a split tour single with Rocketship and might be my favorite Dress moment.5. Blank Students - Background Music (Earcom 1 EP, Fast Product, 1979) - The post-punk DIY explosion was full of bands that made one great record or released one great song, and while I don't know anything about this band, the anonymity of it makes me love it even more.6. Jasmine Minks - What's Happening? (7", Creation, 1985) - Early Minks singles tend to be more modish and 60s sounding, but this single has kind of a spare, minimal punkiness to it that I always really loved. What a tune, what a band.7. Sportique - Definition '79 (Modern Museums 10", Matinée/WIAIWYA, 2002) - Greg Webster and mates delivered three mini-lps and a bunch of singles full of bristly, catchy, immediate punk-pop gems. This song argues for a rebirth of the DIY post-punk spirit of excitement, and I can dig it.8. Groove Farm - Just A Silly Phase I'm Going Through (Airspace II LP, Breaking Down, 1990) - Breathlessly fast guitar playing, shout-along vocals and quality indie horns. What's not to like?9. This Poison! - Poised Over The Pause Button (7", Reception, 1987) - The two This Poison! singles are just about legendary around my house. Being from Leeds and on Reception there is definitely a kinship to The Wedding Present, but TP! had incredible songs and a sound all their own. The comp on Egg is 100% essential.10. The Charlottes - Are You Happy Now? (7", Molesworth, 1988) - The Charlottes went on to some amount of shoegaze-pop fame on Subway and later Cherry Red, but this slice of rushing girlie pop is my favorite record of theirs. Dig the wild drumming!11. Mousefolk - Crazy Mixed-Up Kid (Songs Of Love And Hate EP, Teatime, 1989) - One of my absolute favorite post-C86 bands. Mousefolk were mainstays of the late 80s pop tape comp scene, and their is a sweet, homemade sincerity to their sound that elevates it way beyond most of the twee-by-the-numbers bands of that era. Plus, they rocked.12. Bubblegum Splash - Plastic Smile (Splashdown EP, Subway, 1987) - Only a few comp tracks and one single from this group, but what a single it is. Super-simple songs, basic buzzsaw guitar and, shall we say, untutored vocals. A great example of punk's "anyone can do it" ethic at the heart of C86 pop.13. The Slits - Shoplifting (Peel Session, 1977) - As much as I like Cut, there's something amazingly raw about the earlier '77-era tracks captured in their Peel Sessions and the untitled Rough Trade LP that really gets me going. "Let's Do The Split" is way up there as well - when the Slits played SF last year they had so much fun with it they played it twice. Pretty cool.14. The Killjoys - Johnny Won't Get To Heaven (7", Raw, 1977) - Nasty, bludgeoning '77 punk from the Midlands, featuring a young and apparently very angry Kevin Rowland. Pure amphetamine energy, and what a punchy sound. Classic single.15. Action Painting! - Laying The Lodger (7", Damaged Goods, 1994) - I have a very soft spot for Action Painting!'s noisier songs, and as much as I love "Classical Music" and "Collapsing Cloud," it's the out-of-control vibe of this single that marks it as my favorite. Magic.16. Boyracer - Spiteful Punk Rock Song #2 (AUL 36X EP, Slumberland, 1994) - One of my favorite bands of all time, so many sound to pick from how would you choose? This was the band's first Slumberland release and I have very fond memories of hearing them play it live and pogo-ing like a madman with A Turntable Friend's Ulrich.17. Buzzcocks - Breakdown (Spiral Scratch EP, New Hormones, 1977) - One could almost say the record that started it all. One of the first independently-released punk singles, and it just happens to be one of the best, IMHO. Howard Devoto's sneered, bored vocals are a perfect complement to the sawed-off, strangled guitar and tumbling drums. Buzzcocks are of course one of the greatest bands ever, but I'm surprised how many people I talk to aren't down with this record. Squares.18. Josef K - Sorry For Laughing (7", Crepuscule/Postcard, 1981) - The Postcard label remains a huge inspiration for me, and the alienated strum of this single is one of my faves. Josef K's blend of dark, angular post-punk and pop always surprises and delights, and I just love the trebly, scratchy guitar sound.19. Fire Engines - Lubricate Your Living Room (Lubricate Your Living Room LP, Fast Product, 1980) - What is it about Scotland? So much amazing music, and the Fire Engines post-Television/Velvet Underground guitar cacophony stands tall with the best. "Lubricate Your Living Room" was the theme to my radio show on WMUC back in the mid-80s, and even though I've listened to it about a thousand times I never tire of it. If you don't have their records already, the Fire Engines comp that Acute put out in 2007 is not to be missed.
