In college, I took a class on entrepreneurship, where our big project was to write a business plan. That same semester, I was also working on a book proposal, and I realized that book proposals are business plans.Fundamentally, they serve the same purpose. A business plan helps you convince investors to invest in your business, and a book proposal helps you convince publishing companies to invest in your book.To be traditionally published, you need to think like an entrepreneur and to be independently published, you need to be an entrepreneur. In this week's episode, we'll hear from Kara Swanson. She's a successful fantasy author, entrepreneur, and the co-founder of The Author Conservatory, an online college alternative for aspiring writers. You'll learn how to· Build a financially sustainable writing career· Build your skillset for marketing your book· Build a schedule that balances creativity and businessListen in or check out the blog and learn how to become an author entrepreneur by leveraging transferrable business skills to build a sustainable writing career.Support the show
Send me your feedback!I got the idea for today's episode after reading an article about how Scholastic, the popular children's book distributor, selects their titles and marketing campaigns. That got me to thinking about what successful authors do to sell more books, regardless of whether they're traditionally or indie published. It will probably come as no surprise to you that Scholastic and other successful authors do many of the same things. They may have vastly different budgets and differing levels of name recognition, but the principles they use and the habits they develop are universal and available to any and all authors. That includes YOU.Listen to discover the 5 Habits of Successful Authors.Resources:Ink and Impact Free Facebook Group1:1 Coaching Session - a single breakthrough session to gain strategy and clarity1:1 Coaching Bundle - Your choice of 1, 3, or 6 months of weekly coachingConnect with Your Host, Dalene Bickel:Email: info@inkandimpact.comWebsite: inkandimpact.comClick here to read the Scholastic article referenced in the podcast. Thanks for listening! A wide-ranging discussion featured acclaimed author and podcaster Malcolm Gladwell. Michael Krasny began by exploring Malcolm's entry into podcasting. Malcolm shared his love for the medium and how his podcast, Revisionist History, showcases his "mischievous side." They discussed the success of podcasters Joe Rogan and Bill Simmons and the importance of curiosity and listening skills. Malcolm touched on his experience with Paul Simon and the cultural effects on cardiologists, as detailed in his latest book. The conversation covered diverse topics. These included elite schools and college admissions processes, a town with a suicide epidemic, and the homogeneity of cheetahs. Malcolm also spoke about OxyContin and COVID, his favorite published book, and his current writing project. He expressed a growing interest in character-driven writing and his admiration for journalist Janet Malcolm. The dialogue then shifted to the role of faith in Malcolm's writing and his thoughts on Kamala Harris and popular music. They explored the impact of popular culture on Holocaust discussions and Malcolm's views on Pastor Rick Warren. The importance of journalism and Malcolm's increasing skepticism were also addressed. The conversation concluded with topics like white flight, fame, and Malcolm's earlier work at The New Yorker.

Born in New Hampshire and raised in a close-knit Portuguese Catholic family, Melissa struggled with a five-year drug addiction in her early 20s. After her second stint in rehab, she made the decision to completely overhaul her life, starting with exercise and healthier habits. Her recovery journey began at a gym, where she joined a running group that helped her see herself as a healthy person. This mindset shift was crucial in maintaining her sobriety. Melissa's fitness journey evolved from running to triathlons, kettlebells, and eventually CrossFit, where she became deeply involved, even owning a gym and contributing to the CrossFit Journal. In 2009, inspired by her CrossFit experience, Melissa created the Whole 30 as a personal experiment. Kristof is a veteran, author, and journalist originally from Texas who now resides in Vancouver, dealing with Tourette's syndrome. Despite being the third born in his family, he was the first to graduate from high school. During his time serving in the US Navy as a Corpsman following high school, he taught himself to write. Upon leaving the Navy, he discovered that a traditional university education wasn't suited to him, despite winning top awards for short fiction and poetry in creative writing contests at two different colleges. He transitioned into becoming an EMT at the age of 23, then a 911 dispatcher at 26, before securing a position at a newspaper through audition at the age of 27. During this time, he earned accolades from two Texas Press Associations for his feature writing and photography. However, his Tourette's syndrome began to manifest in a way that he could no longer ignore, leading to five years of battling worsening symptoms and refraining from writing. Finally, on October 16, 2021, he overcame this struggle and resumed writing. In February of the following year, he achieved the milestone of publishing his first book. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/happinessjourney/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/happinessjourney/support

Ever wondered why some authors succeed? Why they have a collection of published novels, engaged readers, attention from the media, glowing reviews, the opportunity to participate in book signings, and basically the kind of writer life you may have dreamed of? Writing success- at least, of the "bestselling author" variety, is not guaranteed. But in general, it boils down to this: success in writing isn't just about finding a spare moment here and there to jot down a few words. It's not just about finally finishing your book. It's about making writing an absolute priority. There's a difference between simply making time for writing and truly prioritizing it like your life depends on it. How's this for a truth bomb: if you're not prioritizing writing, you're selling yourself short. When you make writing a priority, you're telling the universe and the people around you, "Hey, this is important to me, and I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen." And guess what? The universe tends to reward that kind of determination. But here's the thing: prioritizing writing is NOT easy. It means FOMO, it means saying no to distractions, silencing that pesky inner critic, and showing up for yourself—even when you don't feel like it. It means being honest about your values. It is really hard to do- that's why so many wannabe authors fail. But trust me, it's worth it. So, if you're ready to stop making excuses and start prioritizing your writing like a boss, then buckle up, because writing coach Karena Akhavein is about to dive into some real talk on how to make it happen on this episode of the "How to be an Author" podcast.
When your inner critic starts to get loud, having the tools to combat it will help you keep writing, and knowing your writing superpower will give you the tools you need. Happy writing! It's easy to think that if you hustle hard until you reach a certain milestone in publishing, then things will get easier and you can slow down. It's nice to.00:04:16JackYou can't.00:04:17JackBeautiful people.00:04:18JackThey're, you know, it's they're. They're beautiful. They're, you know, beautiful people are are pleasant to to look at however.00:04:28JackBeauty is only skin deep.00:04:32JackAnd and when you talk to somebody, when you read and listen to somebody.00:04:39JackIf there is no.00:04:40JackSubstance inside of them, if they're not, if they don't have a good brain.00:04:49JackYou know, good intelligence.00:04:53JackThey're not intelligent, then they're boring.00:04:58JackRight, beauty.00:05:00JackIs is OK for a moment.00:05:05JackA conversation.00:05:07JackA lifetime relationship with an author.00:05:12JackYou know? Uh.00:05:13JackReading their books, waiting for the next book.00:05:16JackTo come out.00:05:18발표자That I want.00:05:19JackThat kind of relationship with a fan base, people that people that love me and or like me and appreciate me for my mind, not for my appearance, which I think is a lot of what being a famous actor is now. Obviously, it's not just beauty because.00:05:38JackThere are actors have to be.00:05:41JackGood performers, they have to be able to.00:05:46JackPretend to be somebody else, and that's a that is a talent. I'm not saying actors are stupid. I'm not saying actors are on talented. I'm saying that is a talent, but I think.00:06:01JackA part of.00:06:02JackThat is about appearance, just looking good on the screen and.00:06:10JackA writer and author.00:06:13JackIs just.00:06:15JackCreating an entire world.00:06:17JackFrom nothing, just from their mind.00:06:21JackJust from their mind.00:06:23JackThey're creating an entire universe.00:06:28JackA writer is like.00:06:30JackA God.00:06:32JackBecause they get to create the world that all the people in their story live in.00:06:39JackThey get to tell the people what to do.00:06:42JackThey get to tell the people what to say.00:06:45JackThey create the story.00:06:49JackYou know when.00:06:50JackWe think about.00:06:51JackWords we don't like the word history.00:06:55JackRight. We don't think about that word very often, but what does it mean? His story, his story, his story.00:07:03JackRight you create.00:07:06JackA story.00:07:08JackAnd that is completely.00:07:11JackThe writers story they they create it. They sit down at a computer and look at a blank screen.00:07:20JackAnd then they think of ideas.00:07:23JackAnd they type them out or write them out or however they do the whatever they're writing process is.00:07:33JackAnd they put that story those words onto a blank page, and they do it again. And again and again until they have hundreds of pages.00:07:46JackThat came started with nothing, and then they have hundreds of pages with thousands of words.00:07:55JackThat's amazing to me.00:07:57JackAnd if people respected me for doing that.00:08:01JackI would feel a lot prouder than if I were just a famous actor. Now, on the other hand, being a famous actor means you get to go to great parties and you get to be hang out with lots of the beautiful people and famous people and you get to have a lot more money than writers make.00:08:22JackAnd yes.00:08:23JackThe lifestyle would be very.00:08:28JackVery nice.00:08:32JackI feel like the respect that a writer gets.00:08:38JackAnd is is better?00:08:40JackThan the fame that an actor gets. So For these reasons.00:08:46JackI would rather be a successful author.00:08:51JackThan a famous actor.00:08:54JackThat's my answer.00:08:56JackI know it was a long Oreo.00:08:59JackBut I have to fill up this episode somehow because I'm doing a solo episode. So.00:09:08JackIt I need to I need to keep talking a little bit. Your Oreos can be much shorter than this one, but I would love to know what you think about this.
