Tennis Fitness Decoded: From Biomechanical Strength to Cognitive Flexibility

The Art of Winning Tennis Revolution

In the intriguing episode titled "What does 'Fit for Tennis' Really Mean?", the hosts dive deep into the complex world of tennis fitness, challenging conventional notions and uncovering the multifaceted nature of being truly fit for the sport. The discussion kicks off by questioning the traditional approaches to tennis fitness, such as running, gym workouts, and yoga, probing whether these activities alone suffice to prepare one for the rigors of tennis. Dan and Styrling weigh heavily in on the necessity of supplementry fitness for tennis players, sparking a debate on whether specific dietary additions fitness routines are crucial, or if a well-rounded approach to training can provide all the necessary physical fortification. The conversation then shifts to dissecting the key physical characteristics vital for a tennis player, emphasizing the importance of strong legs, good flexibility, and a low body fat percentage. A pivotal moment in the episode is the exploration of the central physical challenges tennis players face, particularly focusing on the sport's stop-start nature and the blending of anaerobic and aerobic capacities, strength, and flexibility. This leads to a discussion on the effectiveness of interval training and stretching in achieving the unique fitness profile required by tennis. The hosts take a closer look at a real-life example to illustrate the fitness demands and requirements over the course of a tournament, discussing baseline fitness, the ability to perform under suboptimal conditions, and the crucial aspect of stamina. The episode takes a compelling turn as it delves into the often-overlooked cognitive component of tennis fitness. The ability to make good decisions under pressure is highlighted as a critical element, tying in the cognitive aspect with biomechanical fitness to unveil how these dimensions interact to shape a player's performance. Finally, the concept of "fittedness" is introduced, proposing that fitness is subjective and must be tailored to the individual's needs and the specific demands of their role in the sport. This nuanced discussion not only redefines what it means to be fit for tennis but also emphasizes the critical blend of physical and cognitive fitness necessary for peak performance. Through insightful questions and expert commentary, the episode offers a comprehensive understanding of tennis fitness, challenging listeners to rethink their assumptions and approach to training in this demanding sport. Financial Journalist Vera Gibbons Discusses Tennis, Fitness and Why Florida Is The New Destination

CNN and Fox News Contributor Vero Gibbons joins the BTB Podcast! Vera Gibbons joins the podcast today for a discussion of all things tennis, Presidents and the steady migration of Americans to Southern States and what that might mean for tennis and court availability next winter, dinner reservations and traffic up and down the Florida peninsula. Vera, a heralded newscaster, started her career on the financial side of journalism at the Kiplinger Report. She moved on to CNBC and the show "High Net Worth" and was a part of CBS’s financial team at "The Early Show." Many of you will know her, more recently, as a contribute to both CNN and Fox News. Vera Gibbons has been in all the New York news studios but now discusses why home is where the mic is. But a few years ago, Vero took a career life leap and changed it all up and started her "NoPo" (No Politics) newsletter. The news digest daily email woke its readers up with all non-political - from finance to fitness, from dining to travel. Vera sold "NoPo" in 2020. But, like many during a Pandemic, she started a "NoPo" podcast and is now in five local radio regions. Gibbons' No Po Podcast is her new, unlikely medium and she discusses how it is different from being on a 3-minute segment on CNBC, Fox, or CNN compared to a 30-minute podcast. We discuss all things tennis and why she has left New York City and moved to the Sunshine State. How will the courts in Florida deal with the onslaught of northern migratory players, especially once the large leagues start to play again? She feels as if her new home in Palm Beach is starting to feel a bit like New York as the money managers and New York companies start to allow their employees to move here and work remotely. Vera doesn’t see a way back to a normal 9 to 5 work week for some industries. That lifestyle could be "toast", says Gibbons. Vera has played on historic courts up and down the East Coast of Florida from her native South Coast, Massachusetts and courts that still defy Har-Tru and are greenish clay from the Berkshires. to the hallowed, green grounds of the Tennis Hall of Fameand to the blustery courts on private estates and clubs on the bluffs in Newport. Her new Palm Beach home has brought her to the courts buffeted by the South Atlantic from Palm Beach Gardens and Palm Beach down through Lantana and Manalapan. Vera Gibbins likes to wear white not just on the tennis courts. The US Open was truly missed, she says. As one of the sporting and calendar gems in New York Vera can't wait for the lights to switch back on in Flushing Meadows so the tournament can regain its regal normality at the end of this summer.. We talk about Joe Biden and his golf game and how the media might report on his sporting endeavors and bemoan the fact that Presidents really just play golf… although a few do quietly play tennis!

She is also the author of Tennis Fitness for the Love of it and The Athlete’s Simple Guide to a Plant-Based Lifestyle. Playing Small Moment Suzanna had never thought about being an entrepreneur until she arrived in Venice Beach, California. A client, who later became her mentor, helped her to realize that she could make a career in the fitness industry. He kept telling her that she needed to get certifications, but she was hard-headed. While she was aware that she knew a lot of things, she didn’t realize the certifications would give her credibility, as she was still adapting to the culture in the US. The Wake Up Call Suzanna knew she wanted to spread her knowledge, with the world, by writing a book and speaking. But she feared that her level of the English language would get in the way. Her wake up call came when she decided to start a blog, and people accepted her and along with her accent. Style of Leadership Suzanna leads by example. Eat as many plants as you can.  Add 5 extra servings of organic fruits to your diet every day for the next 7 days! Ashley's Flourless Bread Recipe: Ingredients: 1 cup / 135g sunflower seeds ½ cup / 90g flax seeds ½ cup / 65g hazelnuts ½ cup / 65g almonds 1 ½ cups / 145g cooked quinoa 2 Tbsp. chia seeds 4 Tbsp. psyllium seed husks (3 Tbsp. if using psyllium husk powder) 2 tsp. fine grain sea salt 3 Tbsp. melted coconut oil or ghee 1 ½ cups / 350ml water For sweetness: 1 or 2 mashed bananas (more banana for sweetness) 1 diced apple or 1 can of mashed pineapple for sweetness Optional: 1/2 cup dried blueberries, cranberries or raisins Directions: Combine all dry ingredients, stirring well. Whisk oil and water together in a measuring cup. Add this to the dry ingredients and mix very well until everything is completely soaked and dough becomes very thick. Let sit out on the counter for at least 2 hours, or all day or overnight. Mix in the cooked quinoa with the dough and put the mix in flexible silicon loaf pans. Only fill the pans so the bread is about 2-3 inches tall. To ensure the dough is ready, it should retain its shape even when you pull the sides of the loaf pan away from it. Mix in a bit more water if the dough is too hard. Preheat oven to 350°F / 175°C. Place loaf pan in the oven on the middle rack, and bake for about 40 minutes.  Watch bread to make sure it doesn't burn. Remove bread from loaf pan, place it upside down on a baking sheet and bake for another 30-40 minutes. Bread is done when it sounds hollow when tapped. Let cool completely before slicing. You can toast the slices in a toaster oven or a regular oven and serve with ghee/coconut oil, cheese or nut butter!  Store bread in a tightly sealed container in the fridge for up to five days. Freezes well too – slice before freezing for quick and easy toast! Be sure to drink a glass of water after eating a few slices. This flourless bread is FILLED with fiber and can cause constipation if you don't drink enough water!
