045: The Journey Inward: Resilience and Mindful Living with Robert Cheeke

NHA Health Science Podcast

From a scrawny teenager to a professional bodybuilder and a dedicated advocate for veganism—Robert Cheeke's journey has been nothing short of remarkable. Growing up on a small family farm, Robert had a deep connection with animals. The farm was home to cows, goats, chickens, and rabbits, and Robert actively participated in their care. However, as he became more aware of the ethics surrounding animal agriculture, he began questioning the practices they followed. Robert's transformative journey towards veganism began at the age of 15, largely inspired by his older sister's commitment to animal rights. She organized an animal rights week at their high school, exposing Robert to powerful videos and literature that shed light on the immense suffering endured by animals in factory farming. It was a turning point in his life. Transitioning to a vegan lifestyle wasn't without its challenges, especially within his family. Robert's father was an animal science professor, and his brother was actively involved in farming. Despite their differing dietary choices and ethical beliefs, Robert's family remained supportive. They even went the extra mile by accommodating his vegan diet with plant-based options from their garden. This aspect of Robert's journey taught him about the complexities of navigating family dynamics while adhering to a set of values that diverged from the norm. Robert's commitment to veganism extended beyond ethical considerations; it encompassed a desire to prove that one could achieve exceptional physical feats on a plant-based diet. This passion led him down the path of vegan bodybuilding. He wanted to inspire others to embrace this lifestyle, reduce animal suffering, and showcase the incredible potential of plant-based living. In the early days of his bodybuilding journey, Robert relied on plant-based protein supplements to support his training and muscle growth. He experimented with various sources of plant-based protein, including soy, rice, and pea protein, to meet his nutritional needs. However, Robert's perspective on nutrition experienced a significant shift in 2012 when he enrolled in Dr. T. Colin Campbell's plant-based nutrition course at eCornell University. This eye-opening experience challenged his beliefs about sports nutrition and supplementation. It emphasized the significance of whole foods in achieving not just physical strength but also overall health and vitality. The dedication and unwavering commitment to a whole food, plant-based diet paid off in Robert's bodybuilding career. He not only won competitions but also graced magazine covers and set strength records. One such record includes a bench press of 345 pounds, a testament to the remarkable strength achievable through plant-based nutrition. Beyond his achievements in bodybuilding, Robert discovered a new passion for writing and teaching. Inspired by mentors and friends, he began sharing his knowledge through books, speaking engagements, and educational endeavors. His ability to inspire and motivate others has turned him into an international ambassador for the plant-based lifestyle. Robert's legacy extends far beyond his personal accomplishments. His contributions to the vegan bodybuilding and fitness communities have helped countless individuals embrace plant-based living, achieve their fitness goals, and find like-minded communities. It's a testament to the transformative power of dedication, compassion, and a whole food, plant-based lifestyle. His story serves as a reminder that anyone can lead a fulfilling life while making a positive difference in the world through their actions and choices. We invite you to join Robert on this journey to a compassionate, healthy, and sustainable lifestyle. Kathleen Gage's interview is a must-listen-to episode because she provides a wealth of knowledge. As a marketing and business strategist, Kathleen Gage has made it her mission to teach solo and small business owners how to become visible to their market through the power of clarity of their message and to package their core message into speaking engagements, books, information products and consulting and coaching services.Known for her “no-nonsense, common sense” approach to all she does, Kathleen teaches experts how to determine the best strategies for getting their message out to market. Kathleen loves shattering the myth that we are too old to go after our dreams. Having participated in her first full marathon at the age of 61, completing her first sprint triathlon shortly after her 64th birthday, celebrating her 65th birthday with a half marathon, Kathleen is working toward certification through eCornell University with the plant-based nutrition program and writing her next book, Discover the REAL Fountain of Youth; Plant Based Eating for Health, due for release in summer, 2021. Her book on plant-based eating shows it’s never too late to take control of one’s health.Although Kathleen is recognized as a top leader in her field, this wasn’t always the case. Kathleen made choices in her teens and early twenties that took her from a comfortable middle-class upbringing to a life of homelessness and being unemployable. Kathleen Gage rose above seemingly insurmountable odds of ending up on the streets in her twenties to become an award-winning business owner, bestselling author, Internet sales and marketing trainer, and highly sought-after keynote speaker. Outside of business, her passions reside in raising awareness about the power behind a plant based life-style as it relates to health, compassion for animals, and the environment. She resides in a rural community in central Oregon that boasts the fact there is not even one stoplight in town. Kathleen's Contact Information:Podcast Showshttp://www.powerupforprofitspodcast.comhttp://www.plantbasedeatingforhealth.com/podcastSocial MediaFacebookhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/PlantBasedEatingforHealthhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/PowerUpForProfitsLinkedinhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/kathleengage/Twitter https://twitter.com/kathleengage Host - Paul Lawrence VannEmail: info@paulvannspeaks.comPhone: (800) 341-6719Tune in to listen to Episode #38 with Kathleen Gage on Apple Podcasts, rate and review this episode and we request a 5-star rating https://apple.co/3hb6QyY

Why Change Your Diet?

The World's Finest Diet

The World's Finest Diet Episode 1. Why Change Your Diet? We all know what we enjoy eating and most of us have been eating a similar diet for most of our lives unless you have tried various slimming diets or keep fit diets or other publicised diets which have promised improved health greater fitness or whatever. The choice of food we eat is one of the most profound activities we humans engage in. For 100,000 years man has eaten a diet which really derives straight from nature be it berries, leaves, roots from the land, the occasional insect or grub, the animals came his way and the fish fro the sea and rivers. Anything which in fact gave him some sustenance. One theory why humans have large brains compared with other mammals is that we were hunter gatherers and had to have an encyclopaedic knowledge of fauna and flora, when it was ready to eat, what was edible what was poisonous and where to find these sources of nutrition when they were in season, all this knowledge was essential for simple survival. The effect of this was that the environment that man lived in coped very easily with his appetite and little damage was done to it. Modern man however is a different matter, we have learned to farm industrially, we have learned to provide ourselves with a very rich, high calorific diet, seven days a week, 365 days a year by simply visiting our local supermarket and picking the food off the shelves. The effect of this change in diet choice and food provision has had two major catastrophic effects on the planet and our selves. It has led to an epidemic of ill-health principally caused by excessive eating of foods which in moderation would have been fine but in the excessive amounts now consumed and in their modified state have led to most of our chronic diseases and the second major problem is that the provision of such food has demanded massive farming on the scale never seen before which has caused huge devastation of natural forests and increased greenhouse gases to create our current existentialist problem of global warming. This is no longer speculation, this is no longer based on a small group of people with this opinion, it is based soundly on observed research and scientific investigation. We are where we were when it was discovered that smoking could seriously damage our health; it took almost fifty years before this simple fact was accepted by the medical establishment and governments and for changes in the advice and law to discourage smoking. It may take less time, I hope, for this message about our diet to influence us all. However, for whatever the reason you are interested in improving your diet, this podcast will lead you in the right direction with the certainty, as far as one can be certain with such complex matters, that derives from over fifty years of research and the largest epidemiological studies ever conducted in nutrition and health. As regards the facts and the research I won't bore you with this at this stage you can refer to the references at the end of this podcast. Let me tell you my personal story. As an osteopath I practiced for a thirty years, really trying to avoid the question of dietary advice. Any patient coming to me asking for advice on diet I would refer them to a very good nutritionist who worked with me. Why was this? Mainly because over the years I had seen so much conflicting advice, and numerous books promoting the latest diet for slimming, improved fitness, this condition or that condition but all lacking adequate scientific evidence to support their claims. The nearest I got to helping people was to say “try to eat as varied diet as you can and that way you be pretty sure of getting all the nutrients you need and probably not exceeding any particular one cause to you trouble”. I based this advice on the fact that our hunter-gatherer ancestors ate a diet consisting of up to two thousand foods whereas modern western man often ate fewer than a few dozen foods. In 2015 I happened to read a book called the China Study by Dr. T Colin Campbell, I read this book from cover to cover and I was overwhelmed by the story it was telling. Here was what I'd been looking for over the past thirty years; dietary advice built over a long period of time on thousands of hours of research and clinical trials, International observations and every source of investigation possible. I was so impressed that the following year I enrolled on an internet study course with eCornell University, called the whole plant nutrition certification course. This was an intensive course developed by a number of doctors and nutritionists based on the work of the China study. I found this course was perhaps the most rewarding educational training I had had over all my career and was so impressed that I introduced nutrition into my daily work in my practice. Obviously it's not ethical to advise people to do things you're not doing yourself, so I took on board the advice which this dietary system was giving and since then I have been keeping pretty closely to what is called a whole plant nutrition diet. Has it been good for me? The answer is decidedly, yes! I was overweight and now am a healthy normal weight, I lacked energy at times but now, heading into my 80's I can still keep up with my younger sons in building work, and I know this diet is going to protect me from some of the worst chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease & strokes. Has it been easy following such a regime? Not really, but what is worthwhile that is does not require a little effort? So Episode Two will introduce you to this amazing diet which will give you improved health, reduce your risk of most chronic diseases, reverse many diseases and just as a bonus will help the planet survive for a few more thousand years for our children and grandchildren? Come and join us as I ask them about their transitions to a plant-based lifestyle and the advocacy they do through the Plant Powered Mothers podcast. You can find them at www.plantpoweredmothers.com. After a decent gap between episodes here is a conversation with 2 first cousins focused on “helping other mums to make informed decisions about the food they eat and the food they feed their families”. Aggie is an intensive care nurse who struggles because the Intensive Care treatment model does not teach patients how to reverse or prevent chronic disease. Once Aggie discovered the many benefits of a wholefood plant-based diet she completed the certificate in Plant Based Nutrition through eCornell University to help educate and guide others to make the connection between food and disease. As a wife and mother of three, Aggie tells a great story of her family’s transition to a plant-based lifestyle. Kasia has a background in writing and is also a wife and mother of three. Her passion for plant-based nutrition began after her husband treated his high blood pressure very successfully with dietary change. After Kasia’s mother died at 44 from a stroke she worried about having inherited bad genes but has since learnt how effectively an entirely plant-based diet heals the human body and prevents disease. By cutting out all animal products from her families diet, they have all been far healthier. These women are doing a great job telling their stories and inspiring mums to improve what they are eating and serving to their families. And you don’t have to be a mother to listen to this one. Whatever your role in life, in this podcast you’ll hear some great ways of thinking about the plant-based lifestyle. Aggie and Kasia keep it simple, tell stories, bounce off each other for inspiration and, best of all, are building community around a plant-powered lifestyle, something that can help us all. In this episode Kasia and Aggie talk about: Each of their plant-based diet transition experiences The powerful effects their family members have observed The general boost in the energy of their families The benefit of having each other in their transition to a plant-based diet How they now handle eating with family and friends The best ways to deal with kid’s birthday parties and snacks Their advocacy through the Plant Powered Mothers podcast and social media Some of their favourite plant-based meals And many other things You can find Kasia and Aggie at https://plantpoweredmothers.com/ Please also follow them on Instagram and on Facebook. You can also join their Facebook group here. After the interview, you'll hear about an exciting, informative and free online summit that is coming up from August 31st to September 8th 2019. Hanging her shingle in 1994, Kathleen built her business with the very strategies she teaches. Known for her “no-nonsense, common sense” approach to all she does, Kathleen teaches experts how to determine the best strategies for getting their message out to market. Applying the very strategies she teaches her clients, Kathleen is rapidly growing her name recognition and position in a new market moving forward in 2019; the whole food, plant-based, vegan market. Kathleen loves shattering the myth that we are too old to go after our dreams. Having participated in her first full marathon at the age of 61, completing her first sprint triathlon shortly after her 64th birthday, celebrating her 65th birthday with a half marathon, Kathleen is working toward certification through eCornell University with the plant-based nutrition program and writing her next book, Discover the REAL Fountain of Youth; Plant-Based Eating for Health, due for release in summer, 2019. Her book on plant-based eating shows it’s never too late to take control of one’s health. Although Kathleen is recognized as a top leader in her field, this wasn’t always the case. Kathleen made choices in her teens and early twenties that took her from a comfortable middle-class upbringing to a life of homelessness and being unemployable. Hi, I’m Michael Lingard, Orthopath, Buteyko Educator and Plantrician presenting podcast number ten entitled “What is a Plantrician?” Although I have been in practice as a therapist for over 35 years I only began including nutrition screening and advice three years ago. This was not because I didn’t believe nutrition to be one of the most important factors underpinning good health, far from it, I had decided twenty years ago that health was founded on good structure, good diet, good breathing, good mind as well as a good supportive environment from birth, but I had not been able to find any substantial scientifically based nutritional advice to give my patients. Only when I read “The China Study” by Dr. T Colin Campbell that detailed the research that began with the largest epidemiological study in nutrition ever conducted. This was the information I had been looking for all those years, superbly presented and backed by many years of clinical research as well. My next step was to enroll on an intensive eCornell University Course over the internet called “ Plant Based Nutrition”. Once again I was given an educational feast from the leading doctors and practitioners in this field. Very soon afterwards I added “The Food Connection” to my website and began introducing this work to all my patients. By this time I had been in close communication with the founders of the 4LeafSurvey, Dr. Kerry Graff & J. Morris Hicks, exchanging my research on the connection between diet and breathing, and began using this simple but effective questionnaire routinely with every patient. Since then I have been doing whatever I can to promote the use of this simple screening for doctors and other heath workers who want to offer sound nutritional advice to their patients as part of their practice service. It takes just a few minutes for the patient to complete the questionnaire, just one minute for the practitioner to mark their results with a guide to changes to be made over time, backed up with an A4 information sheet plus, in my practice, access to a substantial library of cook books the patient may borrow, giving them the guidance they need to get started towards a better nutritional lifestyle. What I find so rewarding is that I now know I can help every patient I see with sound nutritional advice that is simple to understand but not always so easy to follow. Whether they decide to make changes in their dietary habits is their decision but at least they now have the information how to change for the better if they so choose. Only two nutritional supplements may be suggested, B12 if they make all the advised changes to their diet or if blood tests indicate a need for this supplement, and Vitamin D in winter for some, again if there is any concern a blood test will clarify whether this is needed or not. Any patient on medication from their doctor is advised to have this checked out as they make substantial changes to their diet, often improved nutrition leads to reduced need for medication. So a Plant-ri-cian is a physician or clinician empowered with knowledge of the benefits of whole food plant-based nutrition. I can most strongly recommend the Plant Based Nutrition eCornell University Course to every doctor or therapist who wants to give good guidance on diet to their patients. For me it was the best value educational training I have ever had, based on the study time involved and the benefits derived. On 3rd May 2018 I was honoured to be interviewed by Robert Brus of the highly rated Go All In Podcast. In this interview I share my journey from chronic ill health to thriving well being, primarily by going 'all in' on detoxification, nutrition and natural health. This is the first time I've shared my story so publicly in this depth and I'm proud that I've overcome my resistance to do so. I did this because I feel that my experience may help others with similar issues to regain control of their own health through natural and affordable means. As I reveal in the interview, I am a particular believer in Whole Food Plant Based Nutrition. In December 2017 I gained a certificate in this subject from the T Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies at eCornell University. I have also created a facebook group called Whole Food Plant Based Manchester. You may also be interested in episode 6 of TheTruth Health Freedom Podcast, an in-depth interview with water-only fasting expert and whole food plant based advocate Dr Alan Goldhamer. If anyone would like to contact me about the subjects raised in this interview please do get in touch, if I can help point you in the right direction I'd be delighted, or if you have your own journey to share please do so in the comments - it could help someone.DESCRIPTION FROM THE 'GO ALL IN' SHOW PAGE:On todays show our guest is Alan Burton. She is certified by National Academy of Sports Medicine and also holds a Certificate in Plant-Based Nutrition from eCornell University. She is an author of “Tennis Fitness for the Love of it” and “The Athlete’s Simple Guide to a Plant-Based Lifestyle.” Suzanna McGee loves to talk about plant-based nutrition for maximum athletic performance, health, and longevity. She has personally experienced the power of plant-based nutrition, and the majority of her clients have also transitioned to a plant-based diet with great results. Suzanna McGee also teaches mindful fitness and injury prevention by recreating musculoskeletal balance in the body. Your Challenge: Add more plants into your diet, preferably in the whole, natural state. Eat as many plants as you can.  Add 5 extra servings of organic fruits to your diet every day for the next 7 days! Ashley's Flourless Bread Recipe: Ingredients: 1 cup / 135g sunflower seeds ½ cup / 90g flax seeds ½ cup / 65g hazelnuts ½ cup / 65g almonds 1 ½ cups / 145g cooked quinoa 2 Tbsp. chia seeds 4 Tbsp. psyllium seed husks (3 Tbsp. if using psyllium husk powder) 2 tsp. fine grain sea salt 3 Tbsp. melted coconut oil or ghee 1 ½ cups / 350ml water For sweetness: 1 or 2 mashed bananas (more banana for sweetness) 1 diced apple or 1 can of mashed pineapple for sweetness Optional: 1/2 cup dried blueberries, cranberries or raisins Directions: Combine all dry ingredients, stirring well. Whisk oil and water together in a measuring cup. Add this to the dry ingredients and mix very well until everything is completely soaked and dough becomes very thick. Let sit out on the counter for at least 2 hours, or all day or overnight. Mix in the cooked quinoa with the dough and put the mix in flexible silicon loaf pans. Only fill the pans so the bread is about 2-3 inches tall. To ensure the dough is ready, it should retain its shape even when you pull the sides of the loaf pan away from it. Mix in a bit more water if the dough is too hard. Preheat oven to 350°F / 175°C. Place loaf pan in the oven on the middle rack, and bake for about 40 minutes.  Watch bread to make sure it doesn't burn. Remove bread from loaf pan, place it upside down on a baking sheet and bake for another 30-40 minutes. Bread is done when it sounds hollow when tapped. Let cool completely before slicing. You can toast the slices in a toaster oven or a regular oven and serve with ghee/coconut oil, cheese or nut butter!  Store bread in a tightly sealed container in the fridge for up to five days. Freezes well too – slice before freezing for quick and easy toast! Be sure to drink a glass of water after eating a few slices. This flourless bread is FILLED with fiber and can cause constipation if you don't drink enough water!
