ParentingAces - The Junior Tennis and College Tennis Podcast
Welcome to Season 13, Episode 14, of the ParentingAces Podcast, a proud member of the Tennis Channel Podcast Network. This week, we visit with the directors of a junior tennis academy in South Florida about their approach to overall junior development as well as overall human development. Carley and Marcin Rozpedski are a husband and wife duo who have recently taken the reigns at the Inspiration Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Not solely by coincidence, they are located just a few blocks away from the IMG Academy, which many of you will know by name if not by reputation. Both Carley and Marcin are active members of the ParentingAces Facebook community and often offer valuable advice to other Tennis Parents in the midst of this exciting journey with their own kids. As a former top junior and college player, as well as a successful ATP player, Marcin understands what it takes to help a child achieve their dreams on the tennis court. As Carley says, she married into tennis, but now as a Tennis Parent herself, has had her own trial by fire as she has helped guide their three sons on the journey to their goals. We won't go into too much detail here about the philosophy of Inspiration Academy - you'll need to watch/listen to the podcast for that information - but we do have an amazing opportunity for one female and one male player . . . Inspiration Academy is offering ONE WEEK OF FREE ALL-INCLUSIVE TRAINING this summer to the winner of the ParentingAces Tennis Means Love contest! To enter, please complete and submit the contest entry form at https://forms.gle/By9NYSjrNJeR6Ujo8 NO LATER THAN MAY 1. The entry form must be completed BY THE PLAYER - please, mom and dad, do not do the entry for your child (and, yes, we'll be able to tell if you did!). We will choose one male and one female to receive the Grand Prize of one week at the Inspiration Academy during Summer 2024 - travel costs to and from the academy will be the responsibility of the winners though Inspiration may be able to assist if needed. If you're so inclined, please share this – and all our episodes! – with your fellow tennis players, parents, and coaches. The country's oldest amateur tennis tournament, The Ojai Tennis Tournament, affectionately known as "The Ojai" returns April 26-30 with 1,400 players and 500 volunteers. Steve Pratt and Brian Teacher join us to talk about the tournament's astonishing history and importance to the world of tennis. Teacher, multiple Ojai champion, winner of the Pac-8 single and doubles title in 1974 and a member of the UCLA squad that won the NCAA title in 1974 and 1975, was recently entered on the Wall of Fame in Libbey Park. Pratt, communications director of the tournament, was on hand to talk about Teacher's incredible career as well as The Ojai's return to full vigor after three years of pandemic-related interruptions and curtailments. There was also pickleball talk. Teacher, once ranked no. 7 in the world, went pro after UCLA and won the Australian Open in 1980. Along the way, he beat legends like fellow UCLA Bruins Arthur Ashe and Jimmy Connors. He now runs his eponymous Tennis Academy in South Pasadena. He has also developed an application called Full Court Teaching App that keeps comprehensive records of a player's games and form and allows coaches from all over the world to analyze and advise. It also makes it easier to hire coaches and get real-time help from anywhere with an internet connection. We talked about the changes in the game since Teacher's pro days, the physical demands of the sport and of all high-level athletics, the rigors of the road and where tennis goes next. The behind-the-scenes glimpses into the massive logistical challenge of The Ojai was also discussed. Self-titled ‘Polar Preet Chandi' is nothing short of extraordinary. A passion and expertise for tennis at an early age saw Preet move to the Czech Republic to attend Novak's Tennis Academy when she was just 16. A career in the Army Reserves and a degree in physiotherapy followed; but as her appetite for pushing and challenging herself grew, Preet went on to complete her first half marathon at 20 years old. From there she progressed on to compete in ultra-marathons, and eventually joined the Regular Army in her late twenties, completing large scale exercises and deployments in places such as Nepal, Kenya and most recently a 6 month UN peacekeeping tour to South Sudan. Currently based at a Medical Regiment in the North West of England, with a primary role as a Clinical Training Officer, Preet recently completed her MSc in Sports and Exercise Medicine at Queen Mary's University, but might have to wait to attend her graduation ceremony… Forever interested in ways in which to push the human body to its limits, Preet will very shortly be arriving in Chile to undertake her biggest challenge to date – being the first woman of colour to complete a solo, unsupported trek to the South Pole, travelling over 700 miles, facing wind speeds of 60mph and temperatures as low as -50c, before returning home with the intention of launching her own adventure grant for women. Captain Preet Chandi was shortlisted for the Asian Women of Achievement Awards in the Sport category in 2020. You can follow Preet's adventures on her website: www.polarpreet.com ------------------------------------------------------- For more information on the Women of the Future Programme and initiatives, please visit: www.womenofthefuture.co.uk

Patrick Mouratoglou, also known as “The Coach”, currently the most influential coach in tennis, sharing his incredible journey with us, starting with his difficulties in his childhood to overcoming them and turning his passion for Tennis first into a business (Academy) and then into a profession (Coach). Amazing stories and incredible learning on multiple levels. Best warm up story ever on the Sports Entrepreneurs Podcast. I am certain you will enjoy it. Key Highlights Early childhood stories and challenges (from low self esteem and panic attacks) and the lessons from it Winning the fight against his body and mind at the age of 11 – (first little victory) – lesson, we are the product of our life lessons (have a little win every day) Started playing tennis at the age of 4, playing 8 hours per day – Court was only place where he felt safe and confident Age 15, parents “forced” him to stop playing against his will – another turning point in his life – his dream was destroyed Age 17, started psycho therapy for 10 years – developed tremendous skills how to read people due to his in-ability to interact with people Working in his father's company to learn the trade from the ground up – but wasn't for him – pursued his passion for tennis again Great life Lessons from his meetings with his parents Starting his first academy – renting two Courts (for E$ 3 per court per hour) – putting flyers on cars – after one year 40 “average” players taking lessons Next step – approached Bob Brett (at that time Boris Becker's coach) to partner with him for the “Bob Brett Academy” Had two months to put it all together before Bob Brett showed up. Patrick was the “manager” and running the academy, unfortunately, after six years Bob leaves. Worst business decision to build a name for someone else and now the “brand” disappears on him – luckily his young players stayed on He decided to put his own name on the “door”. Only problem was, he was not a Coach (yet). From that decision onwards, it took him 10 years to win his first Grand Slam as a Coach – we unpack that incredible journey Marcos Baghdatis, first protégé, next lesson (from bad coaching) Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, just made French Open Final – 16 years old when she joined him, struggling together, great story Serene Williams, she was going through a tough moment when they first met, hadn't won a Grand Slam for two years and lost in first round in Paris Called him to train in his tennis academy in Paris (at that time he was coaching Grigor Dimitrov) – “talk to me” story He showed her what he thought she was doing wrong, working for 3 days and she loved it – next meeting in Wimbledon (which she won while Patrick coached her) Massively successful year in 2012, winning Grand Slams, Olympic Gold, etc at the age of 30 – and 10 Grand Slams later Patrick Mouratoglou Academy - from Nice, France to Greece & Dubai (Tennis Centers within top resorts) Schooling and sports program – 200 students, 40 different nationalities – also for families, hotel, medical center, seminar area, etc UTS – Ultimate Tennis Showdown – amazing new concept, shorter format, adapted rules, focused on digital audiences, players love it Patrick talks us through his vision for UTS and what he thinks is right and wrong with tennis right now – must listen for anyone in the business of tennis UTS formula - short, dynamic, immersive and authentic content – started in 2020 in height of pandemic – coverage across 100 countries, 20 mil viewers, 10 invited players Raising US$ 50 million right now, to build a League, 10 events per year in amazing locations across the world – like F1 (only same 10 players) About Patrick Mouratoglou is a French tennis coach and sports commentator of Greek descent. He has been the coach of Serena Williams since June 2012. He founded the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy in 1996 near Paris (later relocated to the outskirts of Nice), and has coached many up-and-coming players, including Marcos Baghdatis (whom he coached to the final of the 2006 Australian Open), Julia Vakulenko, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Aravane Rezaï, Irena Pavlovic, Jérémy Chardy, Laura Robson, Yanina Wickmayer and Grigor Dimitrov. Mouratoglou started coaching the ATP player Marcos Baghdatis in 1999 when Mouratoglou invited him to his Tennis Academy in October 1999, on a one-week basis. Baghdatis was, according to Mouratoglou, "not an athlete at all", however within seven years he would become a junior world No. 1, win the 2003 Australian Open boys' title, reach the final of the same tournament in 2006 and reach the world's top ten. In July 2007, he started coaching Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Within two years, Pavlyuchenkova reached the world's top 30 and has since made two Grand Slam quarterfinals and reached a career-high ranking of world No. 13. They ended their association in August 2009, and Mouratoglou moved onto coaching both Aravane Rezaï and Yanina Wickmayer. Rezaï enjoyed a successful 2010 season, entering the world's top 20 and winning the Premier event in Madrid whilst Wickmayer reached a career-high ranking of world No. 12 in April 2010. Mouratoglou stopped working with both Rezaï and Wickmayer in August 2010 and April 2012 respectively. In December 2010, Mouratoglou started coaching Laura Robson, who was world No. 217 at the time and still struggling to break into the senior tour. They worked together for six months before separating shortly before Wimbledon in 2011, when Robson was still struggling to make any progress on the WTA Tour, having slipped further to world No. 257. During this same period, Mouratoglou also coached Jérémy Chardy within his academy. In March 2012, Mouratoglou started coaching Grigor Dimitrov and set about guiding him back into the world's top 100, having dropped to No. 102 by the time he started. This association ended in September that year and Mouratoglou moved on to coaching Serena Williams. By the time Mouratoglou started coaching Williams, she had just suffered her first-ever opening round defeat in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament, losing in the first round of the 2012 French Open. Since then, Mouratoglou has guided Williams to her fifth, sixth and seventh Wimbledon titles, the Olympic gold medal, her fourth, fifth, and sixth US Open titles, her second and third French Open titles, three consecutive year-end championships titles, her sixth and seventh Australian Open title and lifted her back to world No. 1 in the WTA rankings. Great chat with John-Laffnie De Jager! "JL" is a South African former professional tennis player. Had a career high singles of 313, but had great success as a doubles player with a career high of 11 and 7 titles. He also reached 4 grand slam doubles semi finals and 2 mixed doubles finals. JL achieved 4th place in the Sydney Olimpics in 2000 and qualified for the ATP Doubles Championship in 1999. He is a Grade A star GPTCA level coach, certified by the ATP; and captained the South African Davis Cup team. JL is involved in several projects and businesses: Founder: Matchpoint Tennis Foundation Owner: JL's Tennis Academy in Pretoria Motivational speaker and mental conditioning coach for high performance athletes and teams including top rugby teams. JL was also the head coach of the UAE Royals (tennis team based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates that competed in the International Premier Tennis League) and is the head coach of the Springfield Lasers are a World Team Tennis franchise in the USA. He also talks about his involvement in the "Match for Africa", which his company organized; and talks about getting Federer, Nadal, Bill Gates and Trevor Noah involved and breaking the world record for attending a tennis match in the Cape Town Stadium! He also had a very interesting childhood growing up on a farm; and tells us the story of when he was born, his heart stopped and they had to give him an injection to get his heart going. Instead of injecting him in the thigh, they injected him in his butt and basically hit the main nerve going down his right leg, so he only had 10 percent use of his nerve in the right leg. The doctors told his parents that he only had a 12% chance of walking properly and he'd never be able to play any sport. His right leg is an inch-and-a-half shorter than his left leg, and he was in a cast until he was three years old! Enjoy the episode! By Ed ShanaphyA second report in our series: Women in Tennis Amy Pazahanick always knew she wanted to start a tennis academy. She knew it long before she graduated from college. She knew it with every tennis ball she hit during practice as a kid. She knew it while she played nationals and headed to a Division I school. By the age of 26, she thought. Pazahanick did it. She didn't just start an academy, however. Amy now finds herself running one of the fastest growing management firms in the nation. Her firm, Agape Tennis Academy, established in 2012 on the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia, was an academy aimed at integrating with the community. Now, as a management firm, Agape maintains its values by remaining truthful to its roots - the numerous communities it serves on the courts. Just Like Tennis, Business Improves Through Practice and Repetition A graduate of Coastal Carolina University, Amy learned her trade under a fellow female director of tennis. Under her first director and mentor, Amy remembers that she learned just as much about the "business" side of running a tennis facility as teaching a backswing. Referring to her first boss Amy notes: "She was instrumental in my development," as Amy reflects on her start in the tennis world which, to her, seems so long ago. Amy Pazahanick made a deal with herself to run an academy by the age of 26. She now manages 10 city championships, 70 tennis courts and 30 pickleball courts over 4 facilities...with more to come. The consistency of branding and putting a message out there that stays true to Amy's "mission and vision" has brought her success. Alluding to her training as a Division I athlete where she practiced something again and again, Amy cites the parallel with business - business improves with repetition and practice. Amy pounds the pavement and never stops growing and learning through repetitive, yet objective, marketing, planning, and strategizing. Creating a Team On and Off The Court With a staff of over 50, Amy has assembled teaching professionals on the court that work as a team with juniors in the academy in the foreground and the community as the backdrop. They all look to take juniors to a new level, she says. Unlike other academies where personalities may get in the way, she stresses the emphasis of teamwork in developing juniors' games. Amy does rely on her hand-picked team to support her and her company, but realizes that hard work and attention to detail can't be replaced when you're a leader. One of the most Influential Women In The Industry "If you're a woman, you are held to a higher standard... men have a little more freedom to make mistakes," states Pazahanick. But, then she says the industry is fair. "If you're good, you're good. The market is not going to care. If you're good, it doesn't matter what you look like, if you're a female or if you look like you're twelve years old." Amy isn't just good. She's excellent. She is a perfectionist when it comes to organization and has grown a teenage dream into a large-scale reality. She has been named both Georgia's Tennis Association and Georgia's PTR Professional of the Year. Her dream, Agape Tennis Academy, was named Tennis Organization of the Year by the Tennis Media Group, but even more special to Pazahanick, was that the Academy was also named Community Outreach Program of the Year. Join us as we take a podcast journey to find what makes Amy Pazahanick, well, simply...tick. Agape Tennis Academy (agapetennisacademy.com) is actively bidding for more facilities, and Pazahanick expects the firm to have up to nine facilities under management by the end of 2020. You can reach Amy by email at amypazahanick@hotmail.com

Vince has also appeared on a new television-broadcasting network in the NY, NJ, and CT area, which features high school athletics. This station, MSG Varsity, has featured him twice in their broadcasts, discussing youth athletics, injury prevention, and overuse syndromes. Presently, he is running his solo physical therapy, personal and sports training facility. His physical therapy practice includes all types of patients of all ages, from the active aging with medical and orthopedic post-operative pathologies, to the young, injured athlete, and the infant born with various challenges. Additionally, he treats numerous athletes, such as Olympians, professionals, amateurs, including, but not limited to, the fields of football, basketball, baseball, soccer, softball, ice-skating, karate, tennis, dance, golf, and hockey. On the other hand, many of the patients require care simply from work-related injuries, surgeries, neurological impairments, wound care, home care, and the like. As for the personal training aspect of his business, Vince has the same outcomes as his rehabilitation…RESULTS. He has trained great athletes and hopefuls from all sports, ages, and genders. He has trained the five-year-old figure skater, the female all-state softball players, and the college and professional football player, to name a few. He is also a two-time NPC NJ body building champion. His photos has been published in, Body Building: A Realistic Approach, by Frank Melfa. Vince was featured in The Bergen Record in 2007, and again in 2008, for the exceptional work he has done with his patients and athletes. Vince continues to think “outside the box,” as he searches for new and resourceful ways to help people obtain their optimal performance, whether it be in athletics or life. As he practices research-based physical therapy and personal training, he believes that one should always test new ideas. The practice conducts research studies on sports-related injuries and treatments to offer the best possible care for its patients and the public. Lastly, Vince has trademarked a comprehensive physical examination for athletes, called the MAPP, and is working with the New Jersey Pediatric Society to push its implementation by the sports world for all people who participate in competitive sports. The MAPP examines personal readiness to participate in sports, focusing on weaknesses that could lead to injuries when the stress of sports is placed on the person. He feels that this will greatly reduce the amount of sports-related injuries and even fatalities that we are seeing in the news today. Vince is always searching for ways to educate others. He is constantly writing articles for submission to current magazines. Some of his published articles include: “Basic Weight Training and Conditioning for Children: A Must Before Functional and Power Training,” in Advance for Physical Therapists and PT Assistants, September 12, 2005; “Basic Weight Training and Conditioning for Youth Athletes,” in the Coaches Quarterly, April 3, 2008; “Are You Within the R.A.A.D.A.R. Zone?” in the NJ Cops Magazine, January 2011. These are just a few of his published articles. Vince has created and trade marked a Human Behavior Awareness Program called RAADAR™. RAADAR™ is an acronym that stands for Responsibility, Accountability, Appreciation, Determination, Attitude, and Respect. These six principles intertwine with the eleven essential elements of human life: Family, Faith, Friends, Education, Charity, Work, Skill, Training, Game Day, Nutrition, and Rest. He has adapted his program for use with student athletes, school systems, communities, and the workplace. This program is about being positive and expressing/behaving the “Right Way.” With the use of positive reinforcement, the RAADAR™ Program encourages optimal human behavior for success in all aspects of life.
