Ever been on the wrong road, headed the wrong way? Worse yet, even been on the on the wrong road and not know it? Peter and Paul are on the wrong road in the scriptures for this day. No map, GPS, or self-help will straighten them out, turn them around or get them headed in the right direction. Only an act of resurrection can do that. Thankfully Jesus intervenes to alter their courses – as he does with us, every day.

Rev 3:14-22 This week we look at what Jesus calls the church that is “lukewarm.” Perhaps you've heard of this term before as it applies to spiritual things. However, do you know what it means? And do you know what makes a church lukewarm toward Jesus? It takes some careful self-examination. Thankfully Jesus helps us to diagnose the problem and gives us the cure to being lukewarm. Listen this week as we continue our study in Revelation.

Your Faith Journey - Finding God Through Words, Song and Praise

How you stepped outside of your comfort zone lately? Our lives can become so much in a rut, and we stay there, because it is comfortable. Each of our jobs or activities can become predictable. If we have been doing it long enough, we often know what to expect. We are studying the Old Testament in confirmation right now. It seems history continues to repeat itself. From the beginning human beings have had a choice, listen to God or tell God that we know better. Are we willing to trust God or do we let our anxiety listen to people who want to keep others under control? We continue to have many voices to listen to today and some are louder than others. It continues to be apparent that some people are following voices that don't make sense to us. As Christians answering Jesus' call to follow him, we are called to listen with keener and keener ears. The messages that we hear in our culture are going to become more confusing and not truthful. This is where I challenge you and I to stop and listen to the message and to see if they line up with what Jesus' teachings are as we understand them. If the message does not affirm all of God's creation, then it is most likely not a message to follow. All Christians will not agree, and this is the tough part. There are Christians who read and understand the Bible differently than we do. Thus, we are called to continue to study God's Word. We do have a Bible study every week online and the Holy Spirit is alive and active in it, challenging us in our faith journey. Our study is during the day; thus, it cuts out people who work during the day. I wonder if when we are not studying the Bible in some way that when we are challenged by other Christians who study the Bible, how will we be able to answer? Everyone is busy and I understand that. There is only so much time and energy that we human beings have. When the disciples were called to follow Jesus in our Gospel for today, what were they leaving? What were they risking? They were working with their father which meant their business supported families. Their business was tied into the commerce of their area. Not only did their families depend on them, but the whole area relied on their work. In a sense they were tied into the government which meant their father and others would have to carry on the business without them. The fisherman were leaving a big hole, and their family was probably wondering how they could leave them and their work. The pull to Jesus seemed to be stronger. They heard and felt something that allowed them to take the risk and follow Jesus. Mark even says that they immediately left. Unless it was an emergency, can you think of anyone or anything that would cause you to answer a call immediately? As Christians, we can look at this and say, God through the Holy Spirit had to have been at work. In Mark, all that Jesus had said up until this point was “Time's up, God's kingdom is here, change your life, and believe in the good news.” Now this is something that they were waiting for. Immediately doesn't involve much thought. That's it, times up, here we go. The fisherman were in a rut. They probably fished almost every day and had family responsibilities. As comfortable as they must have been in knowing what came next for the most part, they stepped right out of it to follow Jesus. Most of us have called someone or made a request of someone and we often wait for a response. The length of time may depend on whether it is something that they want to do or don't want to do. It may depend on how busy they are and if they want to change their schedule, let alone change their lives. I would dare say there are not many requests made of us in life that we would immediately say yes and get up and follow. Especially ones that would upend everything that we have known. Leaving a job that gave some sense of security and family is not something we are often willing to do and the older we get the less we are willing to take that risk. Jesus was asking these fishermen to step outside of their comfort zones and take a huge risk to follow him. Jesus needed people who were willing to learn in order to teach others. Jesus knew that they would be in for the ride of their lives. Even though it seems that they were following blindly, they sensed that Jesus was hopefully the Messiah who was proclaiming that God's kingdom is here and that the good news needed to be shared with all people. Here at Faith Lutheran Church, we have heard the good news in many different forms here in worship. We have it in print. We sing the good news, read it and proclaim it. We do it in deed or action outside of these doors too. But how are we telling or proclaiming the good news outside these doors in words? God is not calling everyone here to leave your families and your jobs in order to proclaim the good news to all people. I do believe that God in Jesus Christ is calling us to assess how we are doing it, how we are telling others of the good news outside of these doors. As individuals, I have no doubts that we are doing this, but I am talking about in the name of Faith Lutheran Church. During this time of transition, this is what we are being called to do, to answer the questions: 1) Who are we? 2) Who is our neighbor? 3) How is God calling us to share the good news inside and outside of these doors? We have our first conversation with the congregation on March 3 where we will be working on answering the question who are we? I am working on getting information for us to answer the question, who is our neighbor? The transition team is working on a creative way in which to answer the question, how is God calling us to share the good news inside and outside of these doors? When we seek God for the answers to these questions, I believe God will answer them. Most likely, God will be asking us to step out of our comfort zones, some of the ruts that we are in. Jesus calls us every day to share the good news with all people through word and deed. Jesus is calling each one of us today as individuals and as a community of faith to share the good news. There are many voices in our culture today that share words more of judgement and a lack of inclusion. These are the voices that we are called to counter act with God's love. As human beings with a spotty track record with God, we will be tempted to stay in our comfort zones, in our comfortable ruts. Thankfully Jesus continues to call us and promise us that we are not alone in sharing the good news. God sent the Holy Spirit to give us direction in our individual lives and the life of Faith Lutheran Church. Our country is in a very tenuous place right now. Part of this call will be to listen for the truth. When we answer this call we are saying to God in Jesus Chrit that we are going to listen for his truth. The kingdom is here, but we may need to work harder to find it and hear it. We will probably be called to uncomfortable places to share the good news as we hear it. Some days we may answer the call immediately other days we may not, but the good news for us is that God continues to love us and forgive us. Jesus says to us today, “follow me and I will make you fish for people” How will you be answering that call and sharing the good news?

The church is called to be a light to the lost and dying world. ~~~ How's the church doing? Have you ever had someone come up and ask you that question? More than likely not, unless you're a pastor or leader IN the church. But if you did, how would YOU respond? How IS the church doing? You would probably start off with what you love about your church and maybe how many people are in the pews. Then you might share what your church does for the community, what ministries you have and maybe give a ‘star rating' type review of your pastor or worship leader. Here is where unfortunately some grumbling, drama among members and criticism might find it's way into the conversation as well. Am I wrong? In this season of life, one of the blessed hats I wear is that of a pastor's wife. I have on many occasions been asked, “how's the church doing”? My response early on was very similar to what I just described. I wanted to highlight all the things and how we were ‘doing'. These days though, my response is different. If someone asks me, “how's the church doing”, my reply is, “broken and beautiful”. Isn't that the truth? Oh how beautiful is the body of Christ, all its members, as they move and work together in their giftings, as Paul describes in 1 Corinthians 12, but oh how broken and messy we are as well. Thankfully Jesus is the cornerstone holding us all together. The church IS a people of faith who believe and put their trust in the saving grace of Jesus. That's the church. If you are a believer, you are the church. I am the church. As I think on that more and more and the MISSION and work we are ALL called to do as the body of Christ, I think we need to ask a different question when we're wondering how we're doing. The question needs to be, “how are YOU doing”? You are the church, so if we looked at YOUR life, what would it reflect as to how the church is doing? I'll go first and step on my own toes! How am I doing? Am I on mission? Am I connected to the vine, growing and deepening my faith roots daily, bearing good fruit? How's my marriage? How's my family? Am I training my children UP in Christ? Am I teaching them diligently to love the Lord with all their heart, soul, mind and strength? Am I loving my neighbor? Am I living a life of radical forgiveness and grace for others? Am I gathering faithfully with other believers? Am I bearing the burdens of my brothers and sisters in Christ? Do I even really know the burdens of my brothers and sisters? Am I tithing? Am I serving? Am I using my gifts to build up the BODY, not to satisfy myself? When I wonder how the church is doing, my answer and focus MUST begin with ME. LIfe is hard. We are broken and sinful people in desperate need of a savior, but I'm so thankful Jesus is our strength and his grace covers me and it covers you as we walk together in unity as the body of Christ. Jesus said this. Matthew 5:14-16 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. How's your light shining? The mission of the church is mine and yours to carry. WE are called to BE that light to a lost and dying world in need of a savior. How the church is doing begins with me. That's the truth. I leave you with a prayer of blessing Paul wrote to the church in Rome. Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Let's overflow this day with HOPE from hearts and lives radically changed by the love of Jesus. Thats the church, the body of Christ, the world needs to see. I'm Lori Cline

https://youtu.be/xJ15pEqaaA8 Weak is the new strong I've heard a few phrases with ‘is the new' inserted into them. It's used to say something is the new fashion or has replaced something else. Fish is the new meat, hair is the new hat, brown is the new black, in this office, jeans and a t-shirt are the new business suit. Age 50 is the new 40. Paul McCartney said that meat-free is the new rock n roll! I prefer the old! When I started working four days a week at school instead of five, I loved Thursdays. Thursday was the new Friday. Today we will learn that for the Christian, weak is the new strong. But first, let's lead into this from the context of some previous talks. Returning and rebuilding We have been looking at the first 6 chapters of Ezra which depict a returning remnant from Babylon rebuilding the altar and the temple under the governance of a man called Zerubbabel. We have seen that there has been opposition to the build. I have drawn parallels between the Old Testament temple and our New Testament understanding that our bodies, and the body of Christ are temples that are to be built up. Equally, there is an enemy at work to infiltrate, discourage and destroy the building of God's kingdom. Thankfully Jesus keeps his promises, and one of those promises states clearly that I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. Matthew 16:18. We are simply his co-labourers. Today I want us to focus in on one well-known line in the book of Zechariah which was delivered while the temple was still under construction: So he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the Lord Almighty. Zechariah 4:6 As the temple was being rebuilt, God had to remind his people that it was not by their own might, power or strength that the temple would be built, but by his Spirit. This might seem odd, as it was only a building project. Just bricks and mortar. But it was a spiritual building because it was God-ordained. And that meant that there would be an enemy. Opposition to the build The devil does not hinder the work of those who wish to build temples to their own gods, things in their own name, business built just to serve the money-god Mammon. But when we begin to build something that he has ordained, Satan is up in arms. Thus, when we build our own temple – our personal spiritual edification and growth, or the growth of the wider body – Satan will surely come against it. We know that there is a spiritual realm and that there are invisible forces at work. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Ephesian 6:12 Precious Dust In the light of this we may feel pretty weak. And despite our victory in Christ and the fact that we are seated in heavenly places where God has put all things under his feet (Ephesians 1:22-23), in the natural we are pretty weak. After all, look where we came from: Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. Genesis 2:7 The Hebrew for man is Adam but that word itself sounds like the word for ‘ground'. Man is but dust! Listen to these words from the Psalms: 13 As a father has compassion on his children,    so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him;14 for he knows how we are formed,    he remembers that we are dust. Psalm 103:13-14 These are interesting ideas because I have not so long ago preached on poor self-esteem and the importance of seeing ourselves as God sees us. But the truth is, without him we are nothing. We are weak, he is strong. But we don't have poor self-esteem. We may be weak but we are treasured, pursued, loved and cherished by a heroic heavenly father.

One of the gifts the wise men brought Jesus was a gift of frankincense that symbolized Jesus as the great High Priest. In the old covenant, under Hebraic Law, the high priests would make atonement for the people's sins. He acted as a mediator between God and man. Sin is serious and the consequences it has on our life should be seriously considered. Thankfully Jesus took sin seriously and made a serious change by offering the ultimate sacrifice as our great High Priest.

Martyn Lloyd-Jones Sermon Podcast

Ephesians 2:14-16 — In this sermon on Ephesians 2:14–16 titled “He is Our Peace,” Dr. Lloyd-Jones explains that the main purpose of Paul's letter to the Ephesians is to encourage the church in the peace of Christ. Christians have been saved and are in the body of Christ and as such, they have been redeemed and the war with God is over. They now have the peace of Christ that governs them. Dr. Lloyd-Jones says that the realization that Christ is the peace of believers is one of the most significant and meaningful encouragements to the soul. Only when people understand the true nature of sin do they understand the true nature of salvation. Additionally, Dr. Lloyd-Jones addresses some who would discount the first few chapters of Genesis. Dr. Lloyd-Jones stresses that without the beginning of the Bible, people will not understand why the world is as corrupt as it is, nor will they witness the roots of the gospel. Without understanding the sin that originates in Genesis, people will be confused about the lack of peace in the world. Unbelievers will never have peace with each other unless they have peace with God in salvation. Thankfully Jesus made a way to have peace with God through His death on the cross. Through Christ, all can have lasting peace.

Worry. It's a temptation that is common to us all. We all have things we fear may happen, or things that we fear may not happen. We don't know the future and there are things that are out of our control, and so we worry. We are tempted to worry about big things and small things – things that matter a lot and things that really don't matter all that much. But in Matthew 6 Jesus calls on the people of God to stop worrying. In fact, He says it three time in ten verses – Do not be anxious. And His repeated command should get our attention. Jesus is showing us that our worry reveals something significant about our hearts and about our trust in God. Thankfully Jesus doesn't simply tell us to stop worrying. He doesn't simply acknowledge anxiety as a problem, but He goes on to help us see the solution or the answer for our anxiety. Jesus turns our attention to God and helps us recognize that as those who are in the care of the Father, we have no need to worry. We can replace our anxiety with a deep and steadfast confidence in God.

God's soap is his blood shed for us on the cross. It cleanses us from all sin.

Moses showed humility. Miriam and Aaron showed what James warns about, pride and selfish ambition, when they complained about Moses. The disciples argued about who was the greatest and Jesus reminded them that in his kingdom, those who humble themselves and are willing to be servants of all are the greatest. Like Miriam, Aaron, and the Disciples, we often give in to pride and selfish ambition. Thankfully Jesus came to earth, humbled himself even to death on the cross and paid for our sins of pride and selfish ambition. When we recognize who God is and what he has done for us we are moved to give him humble praise.

The disciples may be Jesus' clueless sidekicks, but we have a lot in common with them- especially our ability to understand. Thankfully Jesus reminds us to focus on our welcome, and trust the rest will fall into place.

Up close, you are sure to discover bumpy spots, areas difficult to navigate, some dangerous places, and maybe even features that may cause you to wonder, “What was God thinking?” Thankfully Jesus routinely visits me to ‘smooth out my rough spots,' ‘soften my hard edges,' and ‘bless my growth.' “You visit the earth... You settle its ridges, You soften it with showers, You bless its growth.” Psalm 65.9-10

Scripture Reading: Mark 8:27-31 “What about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Mark 8:29 Jesus’ question is kind of like a midterm exam, when a test is given halfway through the course to see how far the students have come. After asking his disciples what they have been hearing from other people about who he is, Jesus gets to the real question: “Who do you say I am?” Peter blurts out, “You are the Messiah,” and he is gloriously correct. This is the first time anyone—other than evil spirits—have properly and clearly identified Jesus. Peter gets high marks for this statement, but there is more to being a disciple than getting an answer right on a test. There will also be times when Peter tragically backs down from this shining moment. Sadly, he will later deny Jesus when it becomes dangerous to follow him: “I don’t know this man you’re talking about,” Peter says (Mark 14:71). Some days we can see clearly who Jesus is, and we are able to confidently confess his name. These are wonderful moments, and we should celebrate them. But on other days we can compromise our testimony, and those times can turn out to be quite painful. Thankfully Jesus isn’t finished working with Peter, even though he passes this test with flying colors. Jesus isn’t done with any of us yet either. There is still much to learn about Jesus, the Messiah! Dearest Jesus, thank you for showing me who you are and for helping me to understand. Help me to grow in knowing that you are the Messiah, my Savior! Amen.

Pastor Andy again speaks of the breakthrough he believes will occur to us all in taking part in the twenty one days of fasting at the start of this New Year 2021. He speaks of the need for us to come before The Lord and rid ourselves of junk, pride and so forth, in bringing ourselves to God. Sometimes we need to rid ourselves of things first before we are able to come before The Lord. When we present ourselves to God, it is not the old but the new creation we present to Him. The blood of Jesus has washed away our past sins. Consecration is an interesting and important word if we live with Jesus. It means to be set apart. During Old Testament times it referred to material things being set aside, set apart for His use. Now it is relevant to us, God wants us he wants us to set our lives apart for His use. Consecration begins by us knowing we now belong to God; we have been set apart and bought at a price, by His own blood. Our lives are not our own. In 1 Corinthians 6 verse 15 (NKJV), scripture says “Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ?” So we need to honour God with our bodies. Now we know and believe in the work of the cross, of salvation, we belong to the household of God. We need to understand this not through fear but from love. When we were our own we all messed up! Thankfully Jesus has saved us so this grace of God causes us to live a set apart life for The Lord.  Support this podcast

It is around 8pm here in California as I begin to write this article, and here soon, I’ll also put this in audio and video forms. I’ve been praying over the past few days about what to say, and honestly, my heart is sad but hopeful. Sadly, many people are dying from this virus all over the world. Christians should never rejoice at seeing people die, whether they are in America, Europe, or Asia. All people are made in the image and likeness of God and need the grace of God to deliver them from divine punishment. Thankfully Jesus has come and delivered such hope and grace in the gospel He bled, died, and rose for, and now empowers His people to proclaim on mission for Him through the Holy Spirit. It is hope in Christ; I intend to focus on this article. We don’t know the date our time here on earth is over we just don’t. Hebrews 9:27-28 says this, “And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, 28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.” For the Christian, judgment is based on what we have done with the inheritance of Christ, we’ve received by faith in Him. This is why the inspired writer of Hebrews in Hebrews 9:28 says, “those who are eagerly waiting for Him” and in 1 Corinthians 3:12-15. 1 Corinthians 3:12-15 says, “12 Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— 13 each one's work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. 14 If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.” For the non-Christian, this will be far worse. Revelation 20:11-15, “11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. 13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. 14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” It’s easy to say as Christians that we believe in the 2nd Coming for the Bible speaks about the 2nd Coming twice as much as it does about the first coming of Jesus. But have you thought about the 2nd Coming of Jesus? I would venture to say yes, but have you thought about it at any depth and any length? Have you given it due consideration as you should? Paul, in 2 Timothy 4:6-8 says, “For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day,

In this talk we will discuss the pressure teenagers feel to ‘perform' and encourage them to engage in truly honest conversation with Jesus.

Jesus came to free us from sin. He did not come to free us to sin. The commands in the lessons today remind us just how holy our God is, and their dire warnings remind us just how holy he wants us to be. If left on our own, we would not only fail to live this holy life but would live in the constant fear of our manifold failures. Thankfully Jesus came to live a perfect life…not just to leave us an example of what a holy life looks like, but most importantly, to live the perfect life on our behalf. “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life”

We’d rather be faithful with them.Thankfully Jesus never asks us to give up our uncertainties to join the journey of discovery in following Him. Instead, the Divine welcomes our doubts and uncertainties because it makes us more human and honest. Ultimately, faith has little to do with certainty and more to do with a willingness to act faithfully despite uncertainty. As we begin 2019, we invite you to join us at our Sunday gatherings by throwing our hands up in equal parts awe, bliss and surrender. Sometimes what we really want isn’t what we are asking for. Sometimes what we really need is invisible to us. Thankfully Jesus sees us, really sees us. He sees the obvious physical needs and the more subtle spiritual ones too. And not only does He see them, He cares enough to do something about them both. When it comes to reaching out to the invisibles, when we provide friendship, water, help—sometimes it just isn’t enough. There’s a deeper, spiritual need that can only be met through Jesus Christ. And because of that, we do both—we help with the physical need but point them to Jesus Christ for the spiritual one.
