We tend to worry about all sorts of things. But Paul reminds us in Philippians 4:6-7 that we shouldn't be anxious (worry) about anything. He even goes on to say that if we let our worries be known to God through prayer that God will grant us a “peace that surpasses understanding.” How cool is that? We will gather at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 21 to decorate the sanctuary for Advent. I hope to see as many of you The post Thansgiving Sunday 2022 appeared first on McFarland UMC.

You want to know what I'm thankful for on Thansgiving? I'll tell you what I'm thankful for – I'm thankful for one goddamned minute of peace and quiet without something going wrong or the wife needing help or food smoking and setting off the fire alarm or the doorbell ringing or some deadline coming up quick and passing without being fulfilled or the cat meowing incessently for attention, that's what I'm thankful for. And for this goddamned peant butter cocktail. I'm actually very thankful for the goddamned peanut butter cocktail.
Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.I’m imagining that today of all days we take this moment to empty the glass of our life and begin anew.It doesn’t matter if you see your glass of life as half full or half empty. Begin with an empty glass. Look at it deeply and imagine what it feels like to have a glass of life with no life in it. But you can change that.Breathe slowly in and out mindful of the calming sensation of your breath. When you are ready begin where you wish: people, places, experiences, friends, family, values, home, work, school, achievements, wins, losses, health, illness, happiness, disappointments, and so on. One by one fill up that wide open space with each and every little thing that is the glass of your life.Question: Now, how does your glass look this ThanksGiving Day?This is the place to thrive together. Come for the stories - stay for the magic. Speaking of magic, would you share a nice rating/review on Apple Podcasts and when you come back bring your friends and rellies. Thanksgiving 2020 No matter who you are, this has been a hard year from quarantines, lock-downs, and restrictions to financial challenges, joblessness, and relational hardships, there is no shortage of bad news. It's easy to join the masses in complaining, wallowing in self-pity, and being paralyzed in anxious. But God has something else for his people, something that sets up apart and makes us distinct, especially in times of suffering and hardship, God is calling us to give thanks! Christian thankfulness is grounded in the Gospel so it's not dependent on our circumstances and situations. We are called to praise the Lord, to thank him, and to serve him with gladness. This call to thankfulness is the essence of worship and the secret to spiritual vitality in the midst of a global pandemic.

I think, you know, the human condition doesn't change all that much. Irony is still funny. Being anti-authoritarian is still valid. Being suspicious of people who get elected is still a good idea. I don't care what side of the aisle you're on, I don't care what your story is, I don't care if you agree with me or not. But there are certain fundamental things about being a human being that are healthy, and one is a suspicion of people in authority. One is a sense of humor, I think, is a requirement. When people get angry, they lose their sense of humor. And I think a sense of humor is necessary to survive as a human species, not as an artist, not as a comedian, but we need to laugh. And we need to laugh at ourselves, and if we're able to do that, we'll get through any of these storms we have to weather these days.

The Politics of Thanksgiving: What We Tell Ourselves and Our Children A number of our holidays remain steeped in political controversy. Columbus Day is a case on point. Some argue that we should not celebrate Columbus because he was not the first to reach the Western Hemisphere; Native Americans had been here for thousands of years. It is further noted that he failed in his goal to find a western route to Asia. And, most tragically, he enacted terrible cruelties to friendly natives – allowing them to be raped, robbed, killed, and subjugated of their freedom which led to the genocide of millions. Also, consider Martin Luther King Day, based on legislation that took many heated years to enact, and July 4th (Frederick Douglass: “What to the American slave, is the 4th of July?”). Even Christmas invites its share of controversy over such issues as excessive commercialism and constitutional questions about the appropriate display of Christian symbols on public property. The upcoming Thanksgiving Day is no stranger to controversy, as well. Its celebration has been steeped in deep political controversy since the first feast held in August 1621. For generations, American school children were taught that the feast was held to give thanks to the Native Americans who helped Pilgrims survive their first year on American soil.
