Death Is Not the End Pastor George Lehman It's important to be reminded regular that this life is preparation ground for the next life. 1 Timothy 4:8 (Amp) – For physical training is of some value (useful for a little), but godliness (spiritual training) is useful and of value in everything and in every way, for it holds promise for the present life and also for the life which is to come. ” What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson Two of history's wisest men, Job, and Solomon, thought deeply about the possibilities of an afterlife for human beings, and both concluded that something better awaited men and women on the other side of death. Realizing that God "has put eternity in their hearts" Ecclesiastes 3:11, (We were created to live forever) Solomon writes at the end of the book that, although the physical body "will return to the earth as it was, . . . the spirit [of man] will return to God who gave it" (Ecclesiastes 12:7). Job concludes that a time would come when, despite his being dead in the grave. Job 14:14-15(Amp) – 14If a man dies, shall he live again? All the days of my warfare and service I will wait, till my change and release shall come. 15[Then] You would call and I would answer You; You would yearn for [me] the work of Your hands. Both men knew there would be life after death. The New Testament consistently teaches the doctrine of life after death through the resurrection from the dead (You can read this in I Corinthians 15 for the Bible's most concentrated teaching on it.) 1 Corinthians 15:14 (Amp) – And if Christ has not risen, then our preaching is in vain [it amounts to nothing] and your faith is devoid of truth and is fruitless (without effect, empty, imaginary, and unfounded). While many understand that those who have given their lives to Jesus in this life will rise from their graves at the return of Christ to enjoy their eternal rewards: I Corinthians 15:51-52 - “Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed 52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. I Thessalonians 4:14-17 - “For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15 According to the Lord's word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. The Bible reveals that all humanity will live again! Revelation 20:11-15 (NIV) - “11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done. 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.   “The moment we start to live, we begin to die.  Death is the end of dying, not the end of living.” -Charles Spurgeon   Here's a question: When you leave this world, how would you like to leave? A few days before his death, Dr. F.B. Meyer wrote a very dear friend these words: “I have just heard, to my great surprise, that I have but a few days to live.  It may be that before this reaches you, I shall have entered the palace.  Don't trouble to write.  We shall meet in the morning.” Hudson Taylor, founder of China Inland Mission, in the closing months of his life said to a friend “I am so weak.  I can't read my bible.  I can't even pray.  I can only lie still in God's arms like a little child and trust.” There was an elderly man at home, upstairs, dying in bed.  He smelled the aroma of his favourite chocolate chips cookies baking.  He wanted one last cookie before He died.  He stumbled down the stairs and crawled into the kitchen where his wife was busy baking cookies.  With his last remaining strength, he crawled to the table and was just barely able to lift his withered arm to the cookie sheet.  As he grasped a warm, moist chocolate chips cookie, his favourite kind, his wife suddenly whacked his hand with a spatula.  Gasping for breath, he asked her, “Why did you do that?”  She replied, “those are for the funeral”. In preaching a funeral sermon, a preacher made the following remarks… “We have here before us only the shell – the nut is gone.” A committed Christian man, being asked during his terminal illness, whether he thought about himself dying “Really, friend, I care not whether I am or not, for if I die, I shall be with God, if I live, He will be with me.” Thomas Hobbs, the well-known English philosopher, said at the end of his road, “If the whole world belonged to me, I would give it all to live one day longer.  I am now departing on my last journey.  It is my turn now to take the frightful leap into the dark.” Caesar Borgia, a statesman, said something at the end of his earthly road that many others have surely also said:, “I have made provision for everything during my lifetime.  Only not for death; and now I must die totally unprepared.” The last words of Woodrow Wilson, American president who died in 1924, were short and sweet “I am ready”. Luke 16:19-31  Rich man and Lazarus Luke 16:22-23 (Amp) – 22And it occurred that the man [reduced to] begging died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. 23And in Jades (the realm of the dead), being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far away, and Lazarus in his bosom. Like you set your alarm for a ‘wake-up call', this is a wake-up call to each of us. Ephesians 5:14 (Amp) - Therefore, He says, awake o sleeper and arise from the dead, and Christ shall shine (make day dawn) upon you and give you light. A Rabbi regularly in a sermon said: “Repent, the day before you die.”  Every time someone would come to the Rabbi and say, “How can I repent the day before I die?  We don't know when we are going to die.”  “Exactly!!  Because you don't know when you're going to die, TODAY is the right time.” Hebrews 3:7-8 (Amp) - So, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts…” Thomas Watson said, “A man's greatest care should be for the place where he lives the longest; therefore, eternity should be his scope.” Eternity to the godly is a day that has no sunset; eternity to the unsaved, is a night that has no sunrise. Question: Do you want someone to tell you what you want to hear, or do you want to really hear the TRUTH?

This week I was able to talk with Kurt Thomas. He is a Hobbs High School graduate and the current Women's Track and Field Head Coach at UAB, University of Alabama at Birmingham. It was such a pleasure to talk to him and learn about his journey. He talks about running at Hobbs High School, under Coach Jackson, and then walking onto the UNM track team after graduation. Kurt talks about just walking into the coaches office and talking to him, which he says wouldn't happen today. He gives some insight about what it looks like today with kids looking to join his program or walk on. I liked his honesty and how he said he tries to be honest with the kids and let them know if it's a reality. We continue to talk about his coaching journey and how he ended up at the University of Tennessee, where he graduated and worked as a student assistant, before moving on to Mississippi State. Kurt talks about the coaches he was able to study under during those times and how it helped influence his own coaching. We finish up talking about getting the job at UAB and what this season is looking like for them, as we are getting closer to the indoor season. So, tune in and enjoy the conversation. New Mexico cross country is wrapping up with the state meet coming next week, November 5th and the first Red vs Green Championship race the next Saturday. I hope you have had an opportunity to support your local teams and can get out to one of these fantastic races coming up. Good luck to anyone with a race coming up. Those mornings are cool, but the afternoons are so nice. Make sure you layer, wear reflective clothing in the dark, and keep running, New Mexico.

Is God your God all the time? I've heard it said that everyone becomes a believer in God when they're on their death bed and there are stories of many well-known atheists who had a change of heart on their deathbed (see below quotes) but how do we treat God while we are alive? That's what I'm digging into this morning. https://christian-faith.com/quotes-of-dying-atheists-and-god-haters/ [note: I am not affiliated with the site, I am just sharing quotes they published that I found worthwhile to share] Voltaire famous anti-christian atheist: “I am abandoned by God and man; I will give you half of what I am worth if you will give me six months' life.” (He said this to Dr. Fochin, who told him it could not be done.) “Then I shall die and go to hell!” (His nurse said: “For all the money in Europe I wouldn't want to see another unbeliever die! All night long he cried for forgiveness.”) Thomas Hobbs political philosopher “I say again, if I had the whole world at my disposal, I would give it to live one day. I am about to take a leap into the dark.” Sir Francis Newport, the head of an English Atheist club to those gathered around his deathbed: “You need not tell me there is no God for I know there is one, and that I am in His presence! You need not tell me there is no hell. I feel myself already slipping. Wretches, cease your idle talk about there being hope for me! I know I am lost forever! Oh, that fire! Oh, the insufferable pangs of hell! …Oh, that I could lie for a thousand years upon the fire that is never quenched, to purchase the favor of God and be united to Him again. But it is a fruitless wish. Millions and millions of years will bring me no nearer the end of my torments than one poor hour. Oh, eternity, eternity forever and forever!, Oh, the insufferable pangs of Hell!” Want access to our newest book? It was so insightful to learn and explore all the different materials used in a quality soft board such as the thin layer of fiberglass found under the deck, bamboo stringers and EPS core. Where we got the biggest beacon of hope is where Tom sees the future of the surfboard industry going with more natural alternatives like Algae Replacements and Bioplastics.

Plausibly Live! - The Official Podcast of The Dave Bowman Show

Most of you know that I grew up in a very religious environment. I am the son of a Pastor, the nephew of a Pastor, the brother, and the cousin of Pastors, and indeed, I went to Seminary myself. For what was probably the worst seven years of my life, I was also a Pastor. Trust me, I have a working knowledge of theology and faith. My own course took me away from the faith tradition of my family. In 2007, after a very long road and many internal struggles, I fully converted to Judaism. Many of my former compatriots were highly upset by this, and in some cases, they haven’t spoken to me since. C’est le vie. All that said, one of my biggest concerns about the 2020 election (and even before then) is the whole “G-d is on my side” mentality that seems to guide so many people. Not in the sense of the Deity is watching over them, but in the “I’m gonna get what I want because G-d” mindset. Before the election, I had conversations with both Rodbo and Bill about that concern. What are these kinds of people going to do when the Deity DOESN’T do as they have commanded Him* to do? Along my walk in my faith, I learned that there ARE in fact, certain social obligations. Not “socialism” as practiced by luminary humanitarians like Josef Stalin and Antifa, but actual, legitimate G-d commanded social obligations. in fact, one of those obligations has prevented me from ever joining the Libertarian Party (Pirkei Avot 5:10). Among other commandments of my faith, is a simple understanding that I am afraid would almost never play in today’s political Peoria: “And seek the welfare of the city to which I have exiled you and pray to the LORD in its behalf; for in its prosperity you shall prosper.” (Jeremiah 29:7) “Pray for the welfare of the government, for were it not for the fear it inspires, every man would swallow his neighbor alive.” (Pirkei Avot 3:2) The same idea is later echoed by Thomas Hobbs, who said that without government, life would be “nasty, brutish and short.” This is why tonight, in synagogues all over the world, in countries ruled by tyrannical dictators, in nations with weak leaders, and in free nations where religious freedom is treasured, Jews will recite this prayer: “Our God and God of our ancestors, with mercy accept our prayer on behalf of our country and its government. Pour out your blessings upon this land, upon its inhabitants, upon its leaders, its judges, officers, and officials, who faithfully devote themselves to the needs of the public. Help them understand the rules of justice you have decreed, so that peace and security, happiness, and freedom, will never depart from our land.” *Don’t even go there. G-d is a “He.” Deal with it.

What's going on everyone, Welcome to another edition of Confessions of a Native Son, I'm your host Mike Steadman. I'm a Marine Corps Veteran, Entrepreneur, and Aspiring author, who enjoys thought-provoking and engaging dialogue about race, culture, and business. The following episode is an extension of our current series, Alway's Faithful, where I discuss my experiences as a Black Infantry Officers in the United States Marine Corps. After releasing Always Faithful Pt 1. I found myself struggling to record part 2. In order to give me more time to articulate my thoughts, I decided to interview Retired Marine Corps Col Thomas Hobbs, Author of the controversial Marine Corps Times article, "The Marine Corps: Always Faithful-To White Men." We discuss the origins of the article and its reception, as well a reflect on my own experience. We wrap things up by offering solutions to how the Marine Corps can improve the retention and success rate of Officers of Color in combat arms. As always thank you for sharing your time with me and I hope you enjoy the show.

“Not everybody gets a private tour of Argonne National Laboratory.” “I know. Thanks for showing me around.” “Will you remember this when you go back to school?” “Of course.” Annette smiles up at her uncle. They turn a corner and enter command central. Rows of black-capped processors fill the expansive computer room. Theo waves his hand at the machines. “This used to be the Sequoia Blue Gene Q. I modified her to run at 20.1 petaflops, and renamed her ‘Mira,’ after your aunt. She’s now the most powerful supercomputer in the world. Mira has 49,152 compute nodes, and 70 petabytes of disk storage – the fastest to date. And this is confidential,” Theo says, stooping to whisper. “I secretly programmed her to calculate the correct M-theory of the universe.” “M-theory?” Theo scans the room for late-working lab assistants. Seeing none, he continues. “The 11-dimensional string theory, birdie. The quantum structure of the universe.” He chuckles and taps Annette’s head. “Soon we’ll have the theoretical physics equation which will perfectly describe universal reality.” “Soon?” Annette says, ducking her head. “By my estimations, Mira will gift us with the equation tomorrow. Then Theo C. Stout will be recognized as the most accomplished and celebrated scientist in history. And science – as we understand it today – will be turned up-side down. Nothing will be the same.” They stroll between the towering computer cabinets. “So what’s that pretty head of yours thinking?” Annette shrugs. “ ‘Knowledge is power,’ as Sir Francis Bacon famously said.” She smiles up at her uncle. “You’re close, dear,” he says, running a finger along a casing. “The correct phrase is ‘Scientia potentia est,’ and we have the philosopher Thomas Hobbs to thank for that gem. Have you passed your Latin courses yet, sweetie?” “I’m not taking Latin.” Theo stops abruptly and blinks at Annette. He bursts out laughing. “You almost had me fooled there, dolly. Imagine that.” He playful tugs at her ponytail. Annette frowns as Theo polishes the casing with his sleeve. “Absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Annette purses her lips. “And I know Lord Acton said that.” “I suppose that would pass at your university. But his proper name is ‘John Emerich Edward Dalberg-Acton, 1st Baron Acton.’ And the un-butchered quote is, ‘Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.’ You say you’re a humanities major?” Annette’s face reddens, and Theo pats her head. “Yes. But I-I-” Annette stammers, “I’m in my second year.” “I’m sure they keep the city library open all summer. A solid self-education can fill in the gaping cracks and holes of an institutional education. What’s on your summer reading list, dear?” “Well, I’m keeping up with the major authors – I mean, the top-sellers in fiction – so I can better understand the, uh, sociological impact of… of popular culture. Theo raises his brow. She bites her lip. “You know – John Grisham, E. L. James. Well, I kinda flipped through ‘Fifty Shades… ’ Borrowed it from a friend. Didn’t much care for it.” Her face reddens again, and she turns away and studies a processor rack. “You know, you should think about cracking open a practical book now and then,” Theo says. “You’re welcome to borrow any of the computer science and physics books in my office library.” Annette’s gaze sweeps over stacked silver trays and black and white wires. “Would any of those books tell me what’s inside Mira? The inner workings?” “Sure. A few of them might give you an idea of the mechanics, but to learn what’s really going on inside Mira, you’d have to spend decades studying everything from advanced software engineering to quantum mechanics.” Annette sighs. “Well, I was more interested in what Mira actually looks like on the inside. I’m taking an independent art class in the fall and was hoping to get inspiration – a peek at the guts of a supercomputer. I want to see something none of the art students have seen.” “I can let you have a peek inside, right now, if you’d like.” Theo winks at her. He takes a multi-tool from his pocket, unscrews the top two screws of a cabinet, and carefully flexes the plastic casing back a couple inches. He switches on the flashlight extension and hands the tool to Annette. Grinning, Annette positions the flashlight and peers into the crack. A slight jumping movement. She focuses, and sees a large black spider tensed on a webby mass of white wires. Annette frowns and steps back. “Well? Did you get your inspiration?” Theo says, snapping panel back into place. Annette is silent. “Do you need another look?” She clears her throat. “No. Thank you.” The next morning, Annette is quiet at breakfast. “Something on your mind, dear?” says Theo. “I was just wondering,” she says, “If an insect somehow got into Mira, would that potentially affect her M-theory calculations?” “A bug? Mira is one-hundred percent bug-free. I coded a customized anti-bug subroutine into her software. Even with the quantum calculations she’s doing, there’s no way a software bug could pop up.” “I don’t mean a software bug. I mean a spider.” “Of course!” Theo says, laughing. “Mira has a web crawler constantly scanning the academic libraries for the latest research in theoretical physics.” The phone rings, and Annette answers. “Uncle Theo – it’s Charlotte. She says there’s an emergency at the lab.” Theo grabs the phone. “Charlotte? Theo here… What? Actual spiders? Is this a joke?… Okay. Thank you.” Annette shivers. “Charlotte told me the lab is quarantined,” Theo says, trembling. “Filled with spider webbing and… millions of spiders. Can’t even open the doors. The spiders spun layers of webbing over everything.” He collapses on the sofa and pulls back the window curtain. “Snow? In July?” Theo crouches behind the sofa back and peers out the window at a glinting white landscape. “This catastrophic global climate change is happening faster than anyone predicted.” Annette stoops and pats Theo’s head. “That’s not snow.” CMStewart is a fiction writer and a philosophy of technology [This is the name of a philosophical field http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosophy_of_technology] enthusiast.
