In one of the more tragic stories we've talked about recently, three children ages 5, 8 and 9 were thought drowned after their bodies were recovered from a pond near their home. However, the narrative didn't make sense and after further investigation and autopsy results, the police have now declared it to be a homicide. In this episode, we take a look at what happened and some of the glaring questions that need to be answered by the authorities now that this horrible situation has now been declared a triple homicide. Clark and Barton sit down to talk swimming, preparation for big meets, how his parents influenced his success, and much more. More on Clark SmithClark Smith is a 6'9″ freestyle and butterfly specialist and student-athlete at the University of Texas. Born April 17, 1995 in Atlanta, Ga., Smith had the ability to be a great swimmer within his genes – his parents, John and Tori, also swam for Texas and his mother was a member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic Team. Smith came within .04 seconds of breaking the National High School record in the 100 butterfly, an event he was on the USA Swimming Junior National Team for. University of Texas2013-2014In his freshman season Smith swam at the Big 12 Championships, placing fourth in the 500-yard freestyle, fourth in the 200-yard butterfly and sixth in the 100-yard butterfly. The 500-yard free was Smith's first event at NCAA's, and he immediately made a statement. Smith qualified for the championship final first coming out of the preliminary heats. In the final, Smith took out the first 200 yards in 1:38.02, a quick 200-yard free time in itself, and he held on until Florida's Dan Wallace took over the lead at the 350-yard mark. But it was Smith's last 50 yards that pulled him away — he out-split Wallace 24.03 to 25.28 to win his first national championship.Smith then took on the 200-yard free — he qualified for the semi-final, and finished 11th overall just 0.41 seconds behind the heat's winer. On the same night Smith led off the 800-yard free relay for Texas that took 8th. For his final individual event of the meet Smith took on the 200-yard fly, an event that was largely expected to be won by Texas. Three Texas athletes qualified for the championship final in the 200-yard fly, including Smith. Texas went 1-2 in the event, but Smith unfortunately was disqualified for a one-hand touch in the championship final of the event.2015-2016At the Big 12 Championships Clark won the 1,650 in a new school and Big 12 record of 14:31.29. He also was a member of the Texas 800 yard freestyle relay that took gold and finished 4th in the 500 yard freestyle. At the NCAA meet, Clark didn't enjoy the same success as his sophomore year. As the defending champion and top seed in the 500 yard freestyle, Clark didn't manage to reach the finals, finishing 21st in the prelims. He was also the top seed in the mile but finished 12th in the prelims.2016 Rio Olympic GamesIn his first Olympic Games, Smith earned a gold medal for his heat swim in the 800 meter freestyle relay. He lead the team off with a 1:47.20 split. Smith, Jack Conger, Gunnar Bentz and Ryan Lotche combined in a time of 7:06.74 to put Team USA through to the final in second position.2017 World ChampionshipsOn day one Smith missed out on the 400 meter freestyle final after finishing 12th in 3:47.12. Two days later was back in action in the 800 meter freestyle where he finished 10th in the heats in 7:51.83. In his final swim, Smith won a bronze medal. It came in the 4×200 meter freestyle relay where Smith swam in the heats to put Team USA through to the final in 7th. We're continuing to focus on crucial issues facing progressive Texans this election year. With the likely fall of Roe v Wade, we've designed an effort to fight back and it's called a Roevolution! To help illuminate the struggle for abortion rights, we're proud to welcome a trio of the toughest women in Texas: State Senator Carol Alvarado from Houston, and State Legislators Donna Howard and Vikki Goodwin from Austin. All have been in the trenches opposite Texas Republicans for years, and in this mini-sode they share their experiences, their insights, and their advice as we prepare for what's shaping up to be a monumentally consequential fight.
Lynn and Regina are talking about none other than Buster Welch today. If you're a Yellowstone fan you'll remember that Buster Welch made a cameo appearance in the episode when Jimmy first arrives at the 6666 Ranch. The foreman tells Jimmy, “there are three Gods in Texas: the Almighty, George Strait, and Buster Welch.” In today's episode Lynn describes Buster's successful career and after she's done you will understand (and probably agree with) why the Lonestar State esteems him as such. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has high praise for religious organizations that help communities in times of disaster. Churches provide shelter, food, and relief distribution to the community. Some even serve as FEMA response bases, distributing food, clothing, and hygiene products, as well as providing warehouse facilities for emergency relief supplies. Yet, FEMA will not allow churches to apply for disaster grants to repair their own damage. This, despite the fact that FEMA actively encourages secular nonprofits to apply. Three Texas churches are taking FEMA to court. They’re represented by Becket Law, a nonprofit public-interest legal institute that protects religious rights. Today’s guest, Becket attorney Diana Verm, discusses why these churches are taking action and what the outlook is for the case.
Houses of worship and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, otherwise known as FEMA, are at odds—after Hurricane Harvey. From CT’s report: Three Texas churches impacted by Hurricane Harvey sued FEMA this week for deeming them ineligible for disaster relief grants. The agency’s policy excludes sanctuaries that serve as shelters after natural disasters. Conflicts between FEMA and houses of worship aren’t new. In 1995, there was a debate over whether churches could use federal aid to repair damage from the Oklahoma City bombing. (Congress passed a law saying yes, they can.) In 2002, the Justice Department said Seattle churches were eligible for earthquake aid. In 2013, the House voted overwhelmingly to say churches can get FEMA funds for Hurricane Sandy but the bill ultimately died in the Senate. Part of the reason why there’s been no federal statute solution is that there isn’t always political urgency around the issue, said Chelsea Langston Bombino, the director of strategic engagement for the Institutional Religious Freedom Alliance at the Center for Public Justice. “I would love to see the broader nonprofit community say, ‘We don’t all have to agree on our mission. We live in a diverse society, and we need diverse organizations to meet the needs of that society,’” she said. There are more than 350,000 congregations in the United States contributing economically to their communities and offering architectural and artistic value to their neighbors, and the majority offer services for people beyond their congregations, Langston Bombino said. “To restore a community you have to restore its institutions in which that community lives their lives,” she said. “That would include small business, non-profits, community centers, and houses of worship.” Langston Bombino joined assistant editor Morgan Lee and editorial director Ted Olsen this week to discuss why FEMA’s denial of funds is a religious freedom issue, why a recent Supreme Court case could be important on the court’s ruling, and how we can love our neighbors through politics.
