It's disaffected middle class white boy problems as Brenna and Joe tackle Walter Kirn's 1999 novel Thumbsucker and Mike Mills' directorial debut from 2005.While the book took some time to get into, we're both big fans of the third part which explores converting to Mormonism. The film, however, completely omits that section, favouring Garden State musical montages that feel so 2000s.Plus: child abuse, Holden Caulfield comparisons, handy js, the film's stuntcasting, and arguably one of the worst father characters we've ever encountered!Wanna connect with the show? I speak to Walter about what makes one a dissident at the moment and what the nature of a coalition can be that unites a Romanian mom with a Hollywood chad-type, the necessity of free speech and freedom for the creative, what the true believer archetype looks like from the top and how many of them there are, what power looks like up close and much more. Walter Kirn is an American novelist, literary critic, and essayist. He is the author of eight books, including Up in the Air and Thumbsucker, which were turned into major movies. He has written for Time, The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, The New York Times Book Review, The New Republic, GQ, New York, and Esquire. His chosen (anti-) subversive is H. G. Wells and his book "The Outline of History". --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/aksubversive/message
God lytting!

At age 25, Mike Mills found filmmaking through music videos, following the path of Spike Jonze, and eventually working with musicians like Moby and The Beastie Boys. Mills launched his career with Thumbsucker, an adaptation of Walter Kirn's novel by the same name, followed by Beginners, and most recently, C'mon C'mon. The plot follows a woman who asks her radio journalist brother to help look after her son. In this interview, Mills talks about working with Joaquin Phoenix for this film, his obsession with “moments,” why it takes 5-6 years to make a movie, when a script becomes “sticky,” and how to “communicate with strangers in the dark room.” If it's your first time listening, make sure to subscribe and visit my new website for information on the YouTube channel, the blog, this podcast, and my new book ‘Ink by the Barrel' which takes advice from these 200+ interviews at the link below… Follow us on Instagram: @creativeprinciples If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts? Within the first few moments of speaking with writer-director Mike Mills, you vibe with his calm energy and gentle spirit, therefore making it a very soul enriching experience to have during an interview. This feeling isn't a stranger to most who have seen his films, as Mills has been making audiences feel this way over the last sixteen years since his debut feature Thumbsucker. In taking time between his debut and his next three projects, he was able to find distinct connections that span into grand ideas about not just the world his character inhabits, but our modern culture and society. Films like Beginners and 20th Century Women are, respectively, pieces of art used as an ode to his father and mother. The former earned massive acclaim, including the late Christopher Plummer's Oscar win for Best Supporting Actor. The latter was hailed as one of the best films of the last decade and landed Mills his first Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. But it is his latest film, C'mon C'mon, that finds him examining new territory, as Mills is making a film about a new family member, his relationship with his child, thus his most personal film to date. Within C'mon C'mon, we follow a journalist named Johnny (Joaquin Phoenix) and his precocious nephew Jesse (Woody Norman) as their bond grows while Jesse's mom Viv (Gaby Hoffman) is tending to the needs of Jesse's struggling father (Scoot McNairy). Built within this simple narrative lies some of the most honest screenwriting of the year as Mills is able to balance this familial dynamic as well as the difficult themes he suggests about humanities future and how unsure our world is, with no solutions in sight. From talking with him, he is someone who cares deeply about his craft, and the connection his work has with audiences across the world. In doing so, he understands the human soul better than anyone working today in film right now. C'mon C'mon is, as stated in our review, “the best film of his career” and “crafts one of the best screenplays of the last ten to fifteen years.” In my conversation with the writer-director, Mills spoke about his creative process, his inspirations for the film, and tells stories and antidotes of his cast, including the relationship between the veteran actor, Joaquin Phoenix and the newcomer of the year, Woody Norman. Here's hoping the one time Oscar nominee can add not just another Oscar nomination to his leaguer, but a gold statue as well, thus honoring him and one of the best films of 2021. C'mon C'mon is currently playing only in theaters from A24.

and so a crazy and silly adventure ensues. plunging down a dark and twisting hole, deeper and deeper they plunge. quick hot breath builds up in the too stuffy way, heart pounding uncomfortably sweating sheens on foreheads and smalls of back as they all race farther and farther onward. until peeking rays of sunlight and thickly swelling heat wrapped in sticky nonsense crowds the aire thick. it pours down their throats and fills their lungs, warm and sticky and uncomfortable. the fluffy cottontail they chased is no more and they find themselves tumbling onto a thick branch cleaving mighty and high through a jungled aire. before them belches a thick and multi colored lizard, nature and instinct incarnate, recently well feed and contently sunning in a thick and brightly shining shaft of pounding sunlight. then a sharp screech from above and that crafty creature wiggles itself snug in a crack of tree and shadow, hid and safe and snug. they are no fools, they hear danger too and so the 3 strange, brave adventurers find their own hiding cracks in the thick branch and snuggle deep as the can as they watch that wild and wonderful lizard hide.

I think we can all agree that while a coming-of-age tale can be timeless and relatable, they’re a dime a dozen. Meanwhile, where are all the movies about dentists who philosophize and offer spiritual counsel to their patients while experiencing tremendous character growth? This movie almost shows us that story, but unfortunately we may never know the full tale of Perry the Dentist.Feel free to support us on Patreon! Before Mike Mills’ one-two punch of Beginners and 20th Century Women he made his feature debut with Thumbsucker. While not entirely successful, the film shows the voice Mills would fully tap in his later work. Thanks to a stellar cast including Tilda Swinton, Lou Pucci, and Vincent D’Onofrio, and one of the more ingenious castings of Keanu Reeves as a wise orthodontist, it’s worth seeking out. Rob Dean (@neuroticmonkey) joins Sam (@samshotfirst) once again to discuss the film on our all Keanu podcast.
Here is the original text review: About half through Beginners, the second full-length feature by Mike Mills (Thumbsucker, 2005), main character Oliver (Ewan McGregor) spray-paints the following on a blank billboard before making out with Mélanie Laurent: "You Make Me Laugh But It Isn't Funny." He's speaking of course about Anna (Laurent), with whom he is in the beginning phases of courtship, but that also works perfectly as a phrase for describing this film. It's at least better than "comic drama." I watched this movie 'on demand' via Verizon FIOS...it received one out of five stars, which perturbed me... There are forces we are working against that are large and powerful but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try. I'm giving this a high score because it was the best movie I saw that came out in 2011 and I can't find anything to bitch about. If quote unquote "Ewan McGregor can't quite nail an American accent" is something you feel the need to mention in your film critique then maybe you should reconsider things (life choices, etc.), because the sound of McGregor's voice, while awkward, is also adorable and strangely fitting in this case given the fact that his character is the type that so deeply internalizes everything that when he finally gets around to talking about anything, how else are the words supposed to sound? This is a quirky film but not annoyingly so (unlike Thumbsucker, which was very good, but not great, in part because of this). There are times when Oliver becomes narrator and he talks about big ideas in a plain but poetic fashion ("This is what the sun looks like in 2003. The stars. Nature ... This is what happiness looked like in 1955," etc.). The point being at once obvious and culturally stunted in the mainstream. Mills presents these interludes as a series of still photos against a black background, which could have been disastrous but it works. Like most everything in this movie, the risks pay off generously. This is a movie about the human condition that utilizes a (secondary) character, who happens to be gay, to help illustrate its theme. This is a love story full of all kinds of emotions. Early on, Oliver's dog (who belonged to his recently deceased dad, Hal, played by the great Christopher Plummer) 'says', via subtitle, "Tell her the darkness is about to drown us unless something drastic happens right now." The entire film is full of that type of manic energy, though it never feels cliche. Nothing in this movie feels cliche, which is a feat in itself. Nothing feels forced. Every detail has been considered with great care. The acting is tremendous. It's relatable, believable, happy and sad. You should see this one-star motion picture as soon as possible. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/myspace/support
In this episode, we talk with actor Lou Taylor Pucci. Lou is the son of Linda (Farver) Pucci, a onetime model and former Miss Union County, and guitarist Lou Pucci, formerly of the groups "The Watch" and "Leap of Faith". He never showed any interest in singing or acting as a child till his aunt, Cindy, bribed him to try out for a community theater production of "Oliver" when he was 10; two years later, he was on Broadway in "The Sound Of Music". At 15, he landed a part in a small independent film called Personal Velocity (2002), which won the grand jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival. This recognition got Lou noticed by his agent, Billy Lazarus of United Talent Agency, and by his manager, Bob Glennon. Since the release of Lou's first feature film lead in Thumbsucker (2005), he has had parts in HBO's Empire Falls (2005), The Chumscrubber (2005) and Fifty Pills (2006) and shot Richard Kelly's Southland Tales (2006), Green Day: Jesus of Suburbia (2005) and rehearsing for Martin Hynes's The Go-Getter (2007) with Zooey Deschanel and Jena Malone. Lou also won the "Jury Prize for acting" at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival and Berlin's Silver Bear Award for best actor as "Justin Cobb" in Thumbsucker (2005). www.twitter.com/therealltp https://www.instagram.com/thereal_ltp Please visit us on the socials as we'd love to hear from you! https://www.instagram.com/goguerillafilm www.twitter.com/goguerillafilm goguerillafilm@gmail.com

Life is a scary and emotionally draining thing. So it's understandable that we deal with stress, loneliness and fear by using various coping mechanisms. We drink, we smoke, we have casual sex, and sometimes, we suck our thumbs. Nothing about this is terribly weird or shocking, right? Well, how about you spend an hour listening to internet spew about thumbsucking and see how you feel afterwards? This week, The F Plus pays very close attention to what thumb Cathy is sucking on.
