Derren Burrell - Air Force Veteran, Founder Veteran Ventures Capital Derren is back on the Mission Oriented podcast sharing an update on Veteran Ventures Capital, his advice for entrepreneurs in the current economy and about his excitement connect with others at the upcoming MilVet Startup Conference next month.  Derren Burrell's father was a Citadel graduate of 1964. It was an indoctrination that began young but led Derren to graduate from The Military College of South Carolina, class of 1994. He hadn't planned on commissioning but upon graduation did in the Air Force. He served 21 years as a financial management officer. This laid the ground work for his work in the civilian sector. Immediately upon retirement from the Air Force he went to work for TAG Resources, a financial services company. He would attribute his success at TAG Resources to his military experience. He was able to help the company grow exponentially. This led to him being tasked to raise 2 million dollars. It was this specific experience that eventually led him to found Veteran Ventures Capital.  He realized the struggle of raising capital but especially for veteran entrepreneurs. With almost three decades working in the field of HR, Derren has worked with some of the biggest media & entertainment brands, such as EA Games, Universal Music and England Rugby, across all aspects of people management globally.  He describes himself as an engineer and a fixer first with an ability to help define and manage critical processes and complex challenges; whether difficult negotiations, employee relations or re-organisations.  But he's also an HR leader who wants to help individuals, leaders and organisations find great outcomes.More recently he has held senior roles in private equity backed businesses, broadening his portfolio to include handling Environment, Social and Governance (or ESG) compliance and initiatives.  Recently impacted by AI, he has been taking time to research and understand the practical and ethical impact new technologies could have on both HR and on businesses more broadly.In our conversation we talk about how he managed to navigate his way through a tough school environment in the North East of England and his early aspirations towards a military career which sadly didn't go to plan. It was an indoctrination that began young but led Derren to graduate from The Military College of South Carolina, class of 1994. He hadn't planned on commissioning but upon graduation did in the Air Force. He served 21 years as a financial management officer. This laid the ground work for his work in the civilian sector. Immediately upon retirement from the Air Force he went to work for TAG Resources, a financial services company. He would attribute his success at TAG Resources to his military experience. Derren Burrell is the Founder & President of VVC, and also serves as Managing Partner. Before this role he served as the Chief Operating Officer for TAG Resources, LLC, a fiduciary outsourcing company with over $2 billion in assets under management. He is an Accredited Investment Fiduciary, Certified Defense Financial Manager, and Level 3 Certified in the Secretary of Defense Financial Management Program. Prior to his retirement from the Air Force, Derren was the Resource Director of the White House Communication Agency. He worked directly with senior White House staff, Congressional, comptroller, United States Secret Service, Department of State, and Defense Information Systems Agency staff in all aspects of financial and contract management in support of the President, managing nearly $350 million. While in this position he was selected for the rank of Colonel but decided to retire and move to Knoxville and into the private sector. Highlights of his 21-year military career include being deployed to Iraq as the Deputy Comptroller, United States Forces and in Afghanistan as the Resource Director, NATO Air Training Command. In this joint capacity he managed over $20 billion in U.S. appropriated funding in support of U.S. operations within the Iraq and Afghanistan Joint Operations Areas. He also served at the Pentagon as the flying operations analyst for the Air Force, where he was responsible for the largest Operations & Maintenance budget account in the Air Force, over $15 billion. He has been a squadron commander for both finance and wing staff agencies, and was a deployed Comptroller on the front line in Operations SEA SIGNAL, SOUTHERN WATCH, ALLIED FORCE, NEW DAWN, and ENDURING FREEDOM.
