Days are spent combing through grisly crime scenes, piecing together fragmented lives, and chasing elusive suspects, all while navigating the emotional weight of victims' grieving families. The job demands an unrelenting attention to detail, long hours, and an ability to see patterns where others see chaos. Yet, amidst the brutality of homicide investigations, gallows humour thrives—a necessary release valve in a world where tragedy is routine. One moment, a detective might be cracking a joke in the squad room, the next, delivering the worst possible news to a mother who will never see her child again. It's a career defined by the pursuit of justice, but also by the quiet, unspoken burden of witnessing the worst in people while trying to hold on to the best in themselves.https://crimetimeinc.com/ Hosted on Acast. In this episode of Crime Time, Inc., we delve into one of the most pivotal moments in American history: the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, by examining the controversial murder of his accused assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, by Jack Ruby. Ruby, a Dallas nightclub owner with a complex personality marked by both generosity and violence, shot Oswald in front of live television cameras on November 24, 1963. Despite millions witnessing the act, Ruby's motives remain deeply shrouded in mystery. We explore Ruby's tumultuous life, his erratic behavior in the days leading up to the shooting, and the significant legal battles that ensued. His trial, marked by intense public scrutiny, saw his defense argue insanity due to psychomotor epilepsy. However, the jury ultimately found him guilty of murder with malice and sentenced him to death. Ruby's unexpected death from cancer in 1967, without a new trial, left many questions unanswered, fueling ongoing conspiracy theories. This episode provides an in-depth look at the enigmatic figure of Jack Ruby, his impact on the Kennedy assassination investigation, and the enduring mysteries surrounding his actions.00:00 Introduction to the Case00:46 Jack Ruby: The Man Behind the Crime02:20 The Assassination of President Kennedy03:54 The Shooting of Lee Harvey Oswald04:36 The Legal Battle Begins07:41 The Trial of Jack Ruby09:52 Ruby's Final Days and Legacy11:23 Conclusion and ReflectionsTom Wood is a former murder squad detective and Deputy Chief Constable of Lothian and Borders Police in Scotland. The episode this week is from South Wales. Fiona Scourfield lived on a farm with her partner, step-son, dog Bruno and 32 other animals all of whom Fiona adored. She loved animals and worked hard for charities supporting animal welfare, especially dogs. But Fiona would be tragically murdered at just 54 by someone she had only ever shown love and affection. Shockingly, it was a member of her own family. This week, I look at just what happened to Fiona. Somebody was writing to Flight Attendants at Gatwick Airport. Horrible, threatening notes asking for pornographic pictures and threatening violence if the demands weren't met, based on the throw of a dice. On this podcast I usually try to avoid the worst violence as I focus on the story. But there are some cases like this one from the north-east of England where Mark Shaw was so brutally attacked that the details of the violence are necessary to the story. Mark was killed by those close to him leaving his friends and family shocked and unable to quite comprehend just what had happened to Mark. It was a bright winters day in Sheffield at about 4pm as two friends were walking to return a drill bit to a tool factory. As the walked, they saw something just off the pavement in the hedges – it hadn't been covered up and was easily spotted. It was a three foot holdall. The two men who found it carried it down the road, thinking it contained something valuable like an engine; it was certainly big enough. The bag was covered by a bedding sheet tied with rope and the body was wrapped in polythene. They undid the rope, unzipped the bag, peeled open the polythene and got the shock of their lives. They had found a badly decomposed body - a body that was soon confirmed to be that of a man who had been murdered a number of years before. Just who had dumped the body in this area where it would easily be found. And who had killed him - and why? It was almost 5am on a wet and murky morning on an estate just outside Sutton Coldfield. The car pulled up and as the transaction was completed, the customer took a large knife out of his pocket and stabbed the driver of the car, 31 year old Gary Warner. Gary was seriously injured and hours later would lose his life in hospital. But just who stabbed him? And why? This episode, from Northern Ireland, looks at events near Portadown during the period of just a few days at the height of the Troubles. Three terrorist attacks saw nine innocent civilians killed in a series of revenge attacks at the Central Bar in Gilford and at the homes of the Reavey & O'Dowd families. 37 year old nurse Lisa Skidmore wasn't feeling very well so didn't go to work and stayed home. Lisa's mum Margaret decided to head to Lisa's house on her way to the shops to see how she was as they lived very close to each other. She let herself into Lisa house just like she has so many times before on this ordinary day. But there was nothing ordinary about this day. Not long before, 55 year old Leroy Campbell had climbed into Lisa's first floor bedroom using a ladder. When the knock at the door came shortly after midnight, Carol & Keith Slater initially tried to ignore the noise, assuming it was just kids messing around or maybe someone at the wrong address. But as the knocking continued, Carol told Keith he should pop down and see who was at the door in case it was related to their two young children who were staying with Grandparents that night. It might be the police, maybe there had been an accident. Minutes later, Keith was dead - at just 33 years old - and so many lives changed forever. It was late - almost midnight - by a quarry near the forest. The police had arrived as a car had been reported for driving in an erratic manner. The woman was clearly very uncomfortable and didn't want the officers to look inside the two suitcases. The bodycam is startling as an officer opens one of the bags. There is an audible sharp exhale of breath when what he is looking at hits home. The officer says in both horror and astonishment: "What the f***." Lauren Jeska was a fell runner. As a transgender athlete, she had been asked to provide evidence of hormone levels after historical complaints to UK Athletics that she had an unfair advantage competing in women's events because she had been born a man. The policy of the governing body required the athlete to take a blood test, but she took exception to this and feared being unable to compete. Lauren saw this as an attack on her life and decided to take drastic action. Find out more about the UK True Crime Podcast: https://uktruecrime.com Writing Credit: Megan Grant. John Warrington was interested in making money and had built up a portfolio of several commercial premises and two houses. But when market conditions took a turn for the worse, he was soon in massive debt and his life was spiralling out of control. He needed urgent results before he lost everything. John's solution was to write a crime thriller - sure, an unusual choice. When the publishers weren't interested and time was running out before he lost everything, he decided to roll the dice one last time by using the storyline of the novel in his real life... 21 year old Libby Squire, who was studying philosophy at Hull University, had been out with her friends that Thursday evening. They had been drinking around one of their mates houses before heading out. But at the end of the night the bouncers had not let her in the nightclub, The Welly, as they thought she was too tipsy. Nothing unusual here, many of us have been there - so her friends put her in a taxi and paid the fare to ensure she got home safely. But Libby didn't make it home. This week we discover the horrible truth of just what happened to Libby. Susan and Christopher Whybrow - a wealthy barrister - were the fortunate occupants of a beautiful farmhouse in Lavenheath, Suffolk, set within 12 acre gardens. After almost 10 years of marriage, to many people the couple had it all; the idyllic property and a comfortable lifestyle with no money worries. And yet as we know, in all of our lives things are not often quite as we portray to the outside world. In our story today: flying lessons, an illicit affair, a trial at the Old Bailey - and a lawn mower. Todays story is from Liverpool where a shooting outside a nightclub left a number of questions unanswered. Serious players in the underworld were loosely connected and did all they could to make the charges related to the shooting go away. Add to this mix an attempt to bribe a Police Officer and a 90's reality star and that is this weeks story on the UK True Crime Podcast. It was just one of the thousands of missing persons cases that were reported in the UK that year when 63 year old Don Banfield disappeared from his home in north-west London. At the police conference, officers appealed for information about the death of 21 year old Richard Holmes. They told how Richard was shot and killed in Greenham Crescent in the Chingford Hall estate as he defended a 16-year-old boy against a group of men. "The things I have done weigh heavily on my heart, on my head and my soul. A psychopath with a conscience - it's a joke really."Alexandra Morgan told her parents she was going on a spa break with a friend, but when she didn't pick up her children and dog when she should have done a few days later, her mum reported her disappearance to the police. Police enquiries pointed to a local groundworker Mark Brown and a yard he rented near Hastings: a yard with buildings and a shipping container at Little Bridge Farm. But as detectives searched for Alexandra, they found medication relating to another missing woman, Leah Ware. Was Mark Brown responsible for both disappearances?
