It was a brisk autumn night in October 1977 when two best friends, Christine Eadie and Helen Scott, stepped into Edinburgh's World's End Pub for what should have been a carefree night of drinks and laughter. Just seventeen years old, they were out to blow off steam, pub-hop, and soak in the city's energy. But as the night drew to a close, a chance encounter changed everything. On their way out, the girls struck up a casual conversation with two men—a chat that lasted no more than 25 minutes. Moments later, Christine and Helen disappeared into the night. They were never seen alive again. That ordinary pub, on that ordinary night, would be etched into Scotland's darkest history—The World's End Pub forever linked to their final steps. Like Whitechapel in the time of Jack the Ripper, or the Ford Theatre on the night Lincoln fell, The World's End would become a place where tragedy and terror collide. What happened next would haunt a nation—and ignite one of Scotland's most chilling manhunts.Join Jen and Cam on this episode entitled 'Double Jeopardy at the World's End: Scotland's Angus Sinclair."Listener discretion is by @octoberpodVHSResearched and written by Lauretta Allen, as well as myself.Executive Producers @theinkypawprintSources:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World%27s_End_Murdershttps://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-47524945 https://youtu.be/dNMTHwOrQK0?si=DbcL4bufbpxU60UShttps://youtu.be/5WcrDOim1Rw?si=C7jsagwsgwOKHwd0https://youtu.be/EoHghw36gpk?si=0n6DhReS29po3ZLKhttps://murderpedia.org/male.S/s/sinclair-angus.htmhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/1047423638/?match=1&clipping_id=172210762https://www.newspapers.com/image/1047422373/match=1&terms=%22Catherine%20Reehillhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/1047422301/?match=1&clipping_id=172210941https://www.newspapers.com/image/1047424653/?match=1&clipping_id=172211034https://www.newspapers.com/image/1048695564/?match=1&clipping_id=172211313https://www.newspapers.com/image/1048838948/?match=1&clipping_id=172211394https://www.newspapers.com/image/1048780956/?match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/1048767078/?match=1&clipping_id=172211704https://www.newspapers.com/image/1048724298/?match=1&clipping_id=172211867https://www.newspapers.com/image/1048736127/?match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/1048732134/?match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/1048647935/?match=1&clipping_id=172212169https://www.newspapers.com/image/1048590172/?match=1&clipping_id=172212245https://www.newspapers.com/image/1048722237/?match=1&clipping_id=172212760https://www.newspapers.com/image/1048793994/?match=1&clipping_id=172212787https://www.newspapers.com/image/1048792299/?match=1&clipping_id=172212838https://www.newspapers.com/image/1048651639/?match=1&c

In this episode of Crime Time Inc., host Alex delves into the dramatic raid that led to the capture of Charles Manson and his followers at the Barker and Myers ranches in Death Valley on October 10, 1969. The coordinated effort by law enforcement, involving California Highway Patrol, National Park Service rangers, and Inyo County Sheriff's deputies, faced numerous challenges but ultimately succeeded in arresting ten women and discovering substantial evidence of the Manson Family's criminal activities. However, Manson himself was initially not captured. His mistaken belief in his invincibility led him to return to Barker Ranch, where he was eventually found hiding in a bathroom cabinet during a second raid. The narrative also touches on how confessions and testimonies from Family members, particularly Susan Atkins, as well as information from former associates like Kitty Lutesinger and Danny DeCarlo, pieced together the gruesome crimes of the Manson Family, including the infamous Tate-LaBianca murders. The episode concludes with reflections on the extensive investigation and the coordination required across multiple law enforcement agencies to finally unravel the true extent of the Manson Family's terror.00:00 Introduction and Recap00:24 The Raid on Barker Ranch01:22 Capturing Manson's Followers04:20 Manson's Critical Mistake05:50 The Second Raid and Manson's Capture11:36 Susan Atkins' Jailhouse Confession12:54 The Tate-LaBianca Murders14:07 Connecting the Dots19:27 Susan Atkins Can't Stop Talking20:24 The Breakthrough21:45 The Aftermath and Further Investigations32:20 DeCarlo's Revelations Begin32:56 Details of the Hinman Murder35:22 The Tate Murders Unveiled37:32 The Raid and Arrests38:40 Coordination and Challenges41:31 Manson's Delusions and Arrest44:30 The Bigger Picture52:20 Final Thoughts and ReflectionsTom Wood is a former murder squad detective and Deputy Chief Constable of Lothian and Borders Police in Scotland. Days are spent combing through grisly crime scenes, piecing together fragmented lives, and chasing elusive suspects, all while navigating the emotional weight of victims' grieving families. The job demands an unrelenting attention to detail, long hours, and an ability to see patterns where others see chaos. Yet, amidst the brutality of homicide investigations, gallows humour thrives—a necessary release valve in a world where tragedy is routine. One moment, a detective might be cracking a joke in the squad room, the next, delivering the worst possible news to a mother who will never see her child again. It's a career defined by the pursuit of justice, but also by the quiet, unspoken burden of witnessing the worst in people while trying to hold on to the best in themselves.https://crimetimeinc.com/ Hosted on Acast. Despite millions witnessing the act, Ruby's motives remain deeply shrouded in mystery. The episode this week is from South Wales. Fiona Scourfield lived on a farm with her partner, step-son, dog Bruno and 32 other animals all of whom Fiona adored. She loved animals and worked hard for charities supporting animal welfare, especially dogs. But Fiona would be tragically murdered at just 54 by someone she had only ever shown love and affection. Shockingly, it was a member of her own family. This week, I look at just what happened to Fiona. On this podcast I usually try to avoid the worst violence as I focus on the story. But there are some cases like this one from the north-east of England where Mark Shaw was so brutally attacked that the details of the violence are necessary to the story. Mark was killed by those close to him leaving his friends and family shocked and unable to quite comprehend just what had happened to Mark. It was a bright winters day in Sheffield at about 4pm as two friends were walking to return a drill bit to a tool factory. As the walked, they saw something just off the pavement in the hedges – it hadn't been covered up and was easily spotted. It was a three foot holdall. The two men who found it carried it down the road, thinking it contained something valuable like an engine; it was certainly big enough. The bag was covered by a bedding sheet tied with rope and the body was wrapped in polythene. They undid the rope, unzipped the bag, peeled open the polythene and got the shock of their lives. They had found a badly decomposed body - a body that was soon confirmed to be that of a man who had been murdered a number of years before. Just who had dumped the body in this area where it would easily be found. And who had killed him - and why? This is part two of a two part series, so I strongly recommend you listen to part one. Marcella Davis was a 19 year old mum of a baby daughter, Dione. Marcella adored Dione and to make a living for her and her daughter, Marcella worked as a sex worker on the dangerous streets of the red light district of Wolverhampton in the West Midlands. 37 year old nurse Lisa Skidmore wasn't feeling very well so didn't go to work and stayed home. Lisa's mum Margaret decided to head to Lisa's house on her way to the shops to see how she was as they lived very close to each other. She let herself into Lisa house just like she has so many times before on this ordinary day. But there was nothing ordinary about this day. Not long before, 55 year old Leroy Campbell had climbed into Lisa's first floor bedroom using a ladder. Unbeknown to Lisa, three days earlier whilst wandering the local area, looking for someone to attack, he had clocked that Lisa lived alone and had identified her as someone he would attack. And this morning was the day he chose to carry out his attack... When the knock at the door came shortly after midnight, Carol & Keith Slater initially tried to ignore the noise, assuming it was just kids messing around or maybe someone at the wrong address. But as the knocking continued, Carol told Keith he should pop down and see who was at the door in case it was related to their two young children who were staying with Grandparents that night. It might be the police, maybe there had been an accident. Minutes later, Keith was dead - at just 33 years old - and so many lives changed forever. It was late - almost midnight - by a quarry near the forest. The police had arrived as a car had been reported for driving in an erratic manner. The woman was clearly very uncomfortable and didn't want the officers to look inside the two suitcases. The bodycam is startling as an officer opens one of the bags. There is an audible sharp exhale of breath when what he is looking at hits home. The officer says in both horror and astonishment: "What the f***." Lauren Jeska was a fell runner. As a transgender athlete, she had been asked to provide evidence of hormone levels after historical complaints to UK Athletics that she had an unfair advantage competing in women's events because she had been born a man. The policy of the governing body required the athlete to take a blood test, but she took exception to this and feared being unable to compete. Lauren saw this as an attack on her life and decided to take drastic action. Find out more about the UK True Crime Podcast: https://uktruecrime.com Writing Credit: Megan Grant. 21 year old Libby Squire, who was studying philosophy at Hull University, had been out with her friends that Thursday evening. They had been drinking around one of their mates houses before heading out. But at the end of the night the bouncers had not let her in the nightclub, The Welly, as they thought she was too tipsy. Nothing unusual here, many of us have been there - so her friends put her in a taxi and paid the fare to ensure she got home safely. But Libby didn't make it home. This week we discover the horrible truth of just what happened to Libby. Susan and Christopher Whybrow - a wealthy barrister - were the fortunate occupants of a beautiful farmhouse in Lavenheath, Suffolk, set within 12 acre gardens. After almost 10 years of marriage, to many people the couple had it all; the idyllic property and a comfortable lifestyle with no money worries. And yet as we know, in all of our lives things are not often quite as we portray to the outside world. In our story today: flying lessons, an illicit affair, a trial at the Old Bailey - and a lawn mower. Todays story is from Liverpool where a shooting outside a nightclub left a number of questions unanswered. Serious players in the underworld were loosely connected and did all they could to make the charges related to the shooting go away. Add to this mix an attempt to bribe a Police Officer and a 90's reality star and that is this weeks story on the UK True Crime Podcast. It was just one of the thousands of missing persons cases that were reported in the UK that year when 63 year old Don Banfield disappeared from his home in north-west London. He had been having issues in his marriage and had talked about moving back to Trinidad - where he was born and the place he loved. But he had spoken to a number of people about being concerned for his safety: had Don come to harm? Just what happened to Don Banfield? Writing Credit: Megan Grant.
