On March 11, 2014 my (Derek's) debut album Carry On was released. It is amazing to think it has now been 10 years since that release date. A lot of life has happened in that space of time. This podcast episode is a slight detour from our normal content, but it's purpose is to celebrate and give God glory through what He has done. Carry On was, in many ways, a first step into ministry and music for me. It has opened many doors and in God's providence, the story of many songs and thoughts treasured up were able to be shared. Join me for this retrospective podcast in which we dive in deeper and look at this album now turning 10! On this Special Edition of the True Tunes Podcast, we look back at some special moments from our first 18 months as we have discovered our mission to listen to better music and listen to music better – together. We have gathered some favorite clips from our times with Steve Taylor, Phil Keaggy and Rex Paul, Buddy Miller, Tommee Profitt, Charlie Peacock, Christa Wells, Eddie DeGarmo, Liz Vice, Waterdeep, Ella Mine, Marc Byrd, Daniel Smith, Chris White, Sandra McCracken, Ian Fitchuk, and both Larry Norman and his son Mike. In fact, we have included a previously unheard clip from a long lost conversation with Larry as well as a snippet from an upcoming episode with artist and poet Kevin Max. It’s a look back, and forward, as we take stock of this conversation that is just getting started and contemplate the value of conversation, relationships, and the postures and perspectives that allow us to continue to learn.

(Interview Part 2 of 2) What happens with the demons of unworthiness and fear are slain? Creation. On Oct 30, 2018 I found myself fearful and scared of publishing this podcast. I was hearing all the voices of fear and unworthiness challenging me to not publish. Then, during an intense workout, a song called "Can't Take It From Me" by Jung Youth came up in my playlist. "You told me I wasn't worthy, that it wasn't the right time. You already know I'm coming to get mine." I heard these words and I heard a man who had been in exactly the same place I was in. Called to create. Called to speak. He was full of fear, but doing it anyway. That moment was a catalyst for me. The next day on Oct 31,2018, I published the first episode of The Sales Warrior Podcast. Now 271 episodes later, I am honored to welcome a very special guest, Jung Youth (a.k.a. Justin Donahue) who was directly responsible for the fire that gave me the courage to push the "PUBLISH" button on this podcast. Justin who has brought his truth to the world through music that will set you on fire. Justin began showcasing his versatility in the film & tv arena after recovering from quite literally breaking a leg during a live show and writing the triumphant 'Only One King' with Tommee Profitt, which was licensed by the NFL for promotional purposes throughout the 2017 season. His song "Never Stop" was used on the international trailer for the Denzel Washington film Equalizer 2. In part one of our interview we discuss Justin's roots, the power of aligning with purpose and how slaying the voices in our head is required to share the light we are given! Get ready for power! What happens with the demons of unworthiness and fear are slain? Tommee Profitt may not be a "household name," but you've heard his music. As the producer and co-writer of hit rapper NF's music, and as the composer and producer behind some of the most successful film and TV music out there, Profitt has been quietly - and not so quietly - finding a new way to be successful in today's music scene. And it all started by giving up on a dream. This episode also looks back on two of the greatest pop records of the 80s by one of the most under-appreciated bands of the modern era, Bourgeois Tagg.

In this episode we talk songwriting and the production process with cinematic producer, composer and songwriter, Tommee Profitt. Originally from Michigan, Tommee started his music career early on as an artist and came into his own as a producer, gaining several sync placements in shows like the Good Doctor, The Handmaid’s Tale, Quantico, NCIS, as well as several movie trailers, video games and NFL sports advertisements. Tommee made the move to Franklin, TN, with this family a little over a year ago and within that timeframe he has already received a #1 with his friend and hip hop artist, NF. “Let You Down” off of NF’s Perception, topped the Billboard Pop charts in 2017 and is one of the many songs Tommee has been a part of in NF’s career thus far. Tommee also produced a couple songs including the title track for TobyMac’s latest album, “The Elements,” that project was released today and you can go pick up wherever you listen to music. We discuss writing songs with a cinematic feel, working in multiple genres, string libraries, and so much more. You can see a full list of his work at tommeeprofitt.com. Watch the video format of this interview head on over to nashvillesongwriters.com/nsaicoffeebreak. We recorded in his studio in Franklin so you’ll get to see a visual of his workspace.
