In his first season of coaching the Oakdale High baseball team, John Schmidt is this week's guest on the Final Score Podcast. Schmidt chats with host Greg Swatek about the recent no-hitter thrown by his senior ace JP Shultz against arguably the top offensive team in Frederick County, Urbana. He talks about what makes Shultz such an effective pitcher despite not having over-powering stuff, what that moment was like for him and the team once the final out of the no-hitter was recorded and what sort of future potential he has as Shultz heads off to play in college next year at the University of Charleston (West Virginia). The coach also discusses how he got the job at Oakdale and why it was such a desirable position for him. And he also talks about his background as a player, donning the uniform for Catholic University, his close relationship with his brother and how and why he got into coaching. Prior to arriving at Oakdale, Schmidt coached for 15 years and established credibility with the program at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School. Prior to that discussion, FNP sports writer Alexander Dacy joins Greg to talk about what Frederick County teams are state-title contenders in baseball, softball and boys and girls lacrosse.

The German government prosecuted bestselling writer CJ Hopkins for the horrific crime of criticizing the German government. “I've been writing and speaking out against fascism and authoritarianism for over 30 years,” says CJ Hopkins – a lifelong “man of the Left” according to Crisis Magazine. Imagine his surprise when German media accused him of being an extremist neo-Nazi and Amazon banned the cover art of his latest book. “What followed was a criminal investigation, book bans, and contentious legal battles—all aimed at silencing his dissent,” reports Sky News Australia. The government's message, CJ says, is clear: “You will obey, or we will crush you.” Click here to read “The Rise of the New Normal Reich: Consent Factory Essays, Vol. III (2020-2021)” by CJ Hopkins. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Friday, June 23 Charleston throws a lot of shade, according to its new title of “America's Leafiest Capital City”...researchers at WVU explore farm-to-fiber fashion with wool production…and Ascend WV welcomes the New River Gorge area to its remote worker program--#YesWV…on today's daily304. #1 – From LOOTPRESS – When we say Charleston throws a lot of shade, we mean that as a good thing! The city recently earned itself the title of “America's Leafiest Capital City.” Nearmap, a leading location intelligence and aerial imagery solutions provider, released a first-of-its-kind report, America's Top 25 Leafiest Capital Cities, The report identified the top 25 leafiest capital cities and their percentage of total residential tree coverage. Charleston (West Virginia) took first place with 74.7% tree coverage. “The volume of tree cover can have a significant impact on public health and safety, from preventing overheating, improving environmental health, and mental and physical health benefits,” said Tony Agresta, Executive Vice President and General Manager of North America at Nearmap. “Beyond that, the insights gleaned from this data can be used by insurers, construction companies and local governments to create tangible change in their communities, in addition to tracking progress in the creation of greener cities, reducing natural disaster risk and progressing urban development.” Read more: https://www.lootpress.com/charleston-named-leafiest-capital-city-in-america/?fbclid=IwAR15Xn0T8ZwQ4B4qMqODF9bpjgZOYN9K_5DQdOzTPzidFIfayrhw1vx7TGI #2 – From WV EXPLORER – Wool production has declined in West Virginia, but researchers at West Virginia University are exploring new ways to support the state's sheep farmers and wool producers. Jordon Masters, a WVU research assistant, is leading the effort to promote farm-to-fiber production in the Mountain State with the goal of adding value to wool with grant funding from Fibershed, a nonprofit that develops regional fiber systems. “I think it is important to promote farm-to-fiber and farm-to-fashion for West Virginia farmers,” Masters said. “Too often, West Virginia farmers have been left behind, and, hopefully, the work through this grant will help to end that.” Masters aims to create a kind of micro-mill to help West Virginia producers process their wool more effectively and shorten the supply chain. The micro-mill suite will allow farmers to process the fiber themselves, adding value to the fibers they sell by creating many different products, such as garments, accessories, and carpentry fiber. The program offers a $12,000 cash relocation incentive and a year of free outdoor recreation including whitewater rafting and skiing. Craving even more insight on career opportunities in the legal field? The women recently spoke at the When There are Nine conference at the University of Charleston in West Virginia, an event designed as a ‘for women, by women' conversation for those considering a career in the law. Listen in as the justices discuss formative experiences that inspired them to enter the legal profession, including being a witness to domestic violence. The women also discuss the diverse career possibilities for lawyers that go beyond the typical courtroom scenario we often see on television. This episode marks the first time that the justices, who are from different states, have recorded the podcast together in person. The conference title is a tribute to the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who famously said, 'When I'm sometimes asked 'When will there be enough [women on the Supreme Court]?' and I say 'When there are nine,' people are shocked. But there'd been nine men, and nobody's ever raised a question about that." So come along with us to the conference and take a seat. We're glad you're here!

Part 2 of our trip to Charleston, West Virginia as Jeff Holbrook of the WV podcast takes us to the Berkshire, an amazing resort that held a bunker to save the members of the US Government. Jeff also takes us through the amazing number of festivals that Charleston has to offer and also dispels the myths that some believe about this proud state and her great people.
Charleston West Virginia is a great destination that needs to be explored. West Virginia as a whole is a state that is often overlooked, but for those that give it a chance, they are often overwhelmed by the amount of beauty and culture that are seamlessly blended together. No one knows that better than Jeff Holbrook of the WV Podcast who takes us through a city with an amazing capital building, a peanut shop, and some great museums to wrap it all up.
I got a call this past Thursday afternoon from my dad. I was sitting in a Starbucks at the corner of Forbes Avenue and Craig Street waiting to meet with my partner so we could get on the road. The plan laid out for the weekend involved a drive to Blacksburg Virginia to see my youngest brother graduate from Virginia Tech so it wasn't a surprise to see Dad calling at 2:30 in the afternoon. He and my mother would most likely have already gotten to Blacksburg and they wanted to check in with our progress. Dad asked if I had left yet. "No." Dad asked if I'd talked to Mom yet. "No." Dad said he was in the hospital and wouldn't be making it to graduation. "Oh..." Everything was fine, it's just his heart isn't working right and they need to monitor him. There's no need to worry and he has given his camera to Mom so I needed to make sure to take pictures of Carl's graduation. "Which way are you going?" I explained our route to Blacksburg from Pittsburgh. "Well, don't stop in Charleston West Virginia." he said, "It's a shit-hole." My dad was calm so I was calm. I made arraignments to go back to Hampton Roads with my mother and got on the road toward Virginia Tech. We got to Blacksburg, Carl graduated, I took the pictures, we drove home to Chesapeake. Last night Carl and I took in provisions for my dad to his hospital room. I spent a lot of time in this part of town in high school but enough had changed that I needed to look up exactly how to get to the facility. It's beautiful—built of poured and painted cement, glass and soft lights. It's a whole hospital devoted to people with heart issues of all varieties but every floor and every wing looks exactly the same. All broken hearts are equal here. This building is one of the tallest in this part of town but Norfolk is flat as shit so my dad's view is pale winter sky and the tops of other hospital facilities. He's gonna be fine but he's gonna be here for a few days more. Before visiting again today I drove out the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. Every time I come home I like to, "say hi to the ocean" and this morning I just wanted to be alone for a little bit. Only close friends and family have been filled in on what's going on in any detail and to be honest I haven't cried or gotten real upset yet. I just wanted to sit with all the information and think. I wanted more of a plan than, "wait and see!" Sea gulls began to follow me, lurking in the hopes of getting treats from an off season visitor. I recorded a little update and headed back to the car. Getting to the hospital again my dad was resting so now I'm just sitting here in the dark. I know everything is going to be fine. I'll work on some website stuff and otherwise just hang out and wait. The nurse just came in, my dad is stirring, We're gonna talk, we're gonna figure stuff out, we're gonna make a plan.

What use is an F-call? Last week I was reading a report from another Amateur, a QRP station who has made it his aim to have a DX contact every day. John N8ZYA, living in Charleston West Virginia, wrote on his blog that he'd made a contact with Japan. Initially that made me laugh, since for him, that contact was noteworthy, for me, it's one of six Japanese contacts I've made while QRP, in fact my very first QSO on HF was with Japan, sadly the information about what station that was is not recorded by me. After I stopped laughing I had a look at what the implications were. For John, getting to the rest of the US is perhaps not trivial, but at least about as hard as it is to get across Australia for me. I then realised that for John, Japan was on the other side of the planet, for me it was next door. I joked with John that one day I'd be reporting that I'd worked all states - in the USA, and that he had probably already achieved that, to which he responded that he still had to work Alaska. So my learning for the week was to grok for the first time that my contact with Japan is not the same as your contact with Japan. Every station and location is different, all the time. So when you next hear someone share their latest contact, perhaps it's a great opportunity to reflect on how hard that might be for you to achieve. I'm Onno VK6FLAB
