In this powerful episode of Lead Into It, I sit down with Maj Gen Dan Tulley, Director of Operations at U.S. Transportation Command—and someone I had the honor of serving with over a decade ago. We trace his leadership journey from his ROTC days at Duke University to commanding at a global scale, uncovering the real-world lessons that shaped his leadership style. Tulley opens up about a pivotal in-flight moment that cemented his trust in training, the decisions he faced as tensions with Iran rose, and how he kept his team informed, empowered, and motivated during COVID.He also gets real about what makes leadership sustainable: humility, trust, and letting go of the need to have all the answers. One of my favorite takeaways? “Nobody wants to be that single leader that everything depends on.”Whether you're leading five people or five thousand, this conversation is packed with practical wisdom on:Building high-performing, resilient teamsMaking decisions under pressure (and creating space for them)Leading with humility and intentionBalancing strategic and tactical thinkingSpending your “leadership capital” wiselyGrab your headphones—this is one episode you don't want to miss.Let's keep the conversation going—connect with me on Instagram and LinkedIn, subscribe to my Sunday newsletter, or reach out at sara@leadintoitco. Why Trust, Readiness, and Humanity are Important in Crisis Management  Shep Hyken interviews Chief Master Sergeant Brian P. Kruzelnick, a.k.a. Chief BK, Command Senior Enlisted Leader for U.S. Transportation Command. He discusses integrating crisis management and training into everyday business practices and organizational culture.  NOTE: This episode of Amazing Business Radio is a departure from the emphasis on customer service and CX. He shared how he and his team managed major crises, such as 2021 evacuation in Afghanistan and  humanitarian aid in countries that need it. While his “customers” are different than most of the people listening to this show, the lessons are powerful in any situation, big or small, including customer complaints and issues.      This episode of Amazing Business Radio with Shep Hyken answers the following questions and more:    How can effective crisis management contribute to a company's success and customer experience?  How can leaders effectively prepare for and navigate crises in their organizations?  What lessons can leaders learn from military training to enhance their organization's readiness for challenging times?  How can leaders effectively build trust within their organizations?  What role do empathy and humanity play in customer service and crisis management?  Top Takeaways:    In times of crisis, leaders must be prepared to respond effectively and execute plans thoughtfully. Just as the military trains for the worst moments, an organization can thrive even in chaotic situations by being well-prepared and having capable team members who understand their equipment and protocols.     After an organization successfully handles a crisis or a "down day," the next step is thinking long-term and figuring out how to bake the solution into the culture. If you are making changes, make sure your employees understand where they fit in, how it affects them, and how they can contribute in a positive way.    Consistent training contributes to an organization's culture of excellence. Like a well-maintained car, a highly skilled team delivers amazing customer service and effectively navigates every crisis.    Onboarding sets the tone. Effective onboarding sets the norms and expectations within an organization. New employees must clearly understand their roles and align with the company's mission and values.    Empowerment is when employees do not have a boss or someone with a higher position than them peering over their shoulders, they can still make confident decisions because they understand the organization's culture and their leaders' intent.    Plus, Chief BK shares amazing crisis stories from the military that companies and customer support teams can learn from. Tune in!  Quote:   "Crisis either fractures or forges a leader. An organization can see how to go forward post-crisis by how the leader handled the situation during the crisis."    About:    Chief Master Sergeant Brian P. Kruzelnick, a.k.a. Chief BK, is the Command Senior Enlisted Leader for the U.S. Transportation Command. He is a military leader with over 30 years of experience in crisis management and disaster relief.  Shep Hyken is a customer service and experience expert, New York Times bestselling author, award-winning keynote speaker, and host of Amazing Business Radio. To help service members and their families gain a better understanding of PCSing and moving personal property, this podcast covers the differences between containerization and crating. Containerization is the use of large external containers to transport entire personal property shipments. Containerization is used for all shipments moving to, from, or in between overseas locations. Containers keep everything together to help prevent loss and reduce damage associated with handling household goods. Crating is the term used for smaller internal crates used to pack items the moving company feels need additional protection to transport safely. Crating can be utilized during any type of household goods shipment no matter the destination. Criteria for using containerization for domestic moves and crating for specialty items, whether to keep crates from move to move, how containers are sealed with tamper-evident seals to prevent opening during transportation, and what qualifies for additional unaccompanied baggage shipments for overseas moves are all discussed. First reported by the Washington Post, the rendezvous was the highest-level in-person meeting between the Biden administration and the Taliban since the group took control of Afghanistan's capital earlier this month. BIDEN FACES PRESSURE FROM ALLIES ON AFGHANISTAN DEADLINE PRIOR TO G7 MEETING, TALIBAN ISSUES WARNING The meeting took place as the U.S. continued to evacuate Americans still remaining in Afghanistan and Afghan allies who had assisted U.S. forces before their government fell to the Taliban. France, the UK and Germany have all mentioned extending the Aug. 31 withdrawal deadline in order to carry out an orderly exit, the BBC reported. "We are concerned about the deadline set by the United States on August 31," Jean-Yves Le Drian, France's foreign minister, told the network. "Additional time is needed to complete ongoing operations." "The British position is we want to stay longer if it is possible to do so," U.K. Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said, according to The Associated Press. STATE DEPT. DENIES RELYING ON TALIBAN PLEDGE TO ALLOW SAFE PASSAGE FOR EVACUEES: ‘THIS IS NOT ABOUT TRUST' Wallace, however, told Sky News that he is pessimistic about the U.S. extending their timeline. "I think it is unlikely," he told Sky News. "Not only because of what the Taliban has said but if you look at the public statements of President Biden I think it is unlikely." The Pentagon said in a Monday briefing that it will consider leaving American troops in Afghanistan past Aug. 31, in consultation with Biden and allies, but dismissed the idea of the U.S. military taking back Bagram Airfield to speed up evacuations. Meanwhile, Taliban officials told Reuters that they are unwilling to extend the deadline and the "occupation" by U.S. forces. The group warned about "consequences" if the deadline is extended. The U.S. ramped up its evacuation efforts in recent days, getting roughly 21,600 people out of Afghanistan in a 24-hour period that ended early Tuesday morning. A senior U.S. official is describing it as "an historic operation in scope and scale." According to Gen. Stephen Lyons, who is in charge of U.S. Transportation Command, a C-17 is taking off from Kabul every 48 minutes. Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby said the progress has been aided by cooperation from the Taliban. "Thus far, and going forward, it does require constant coordination and deconfliction with the Taliban," Kirby said. "What we've seen is, this deconfliction has worked well in terms of allowing access and flow as well as reducing the overall size of the crowds just outside the airport." Fox News' Edmund DeMarche and Cameron Cawthorne, and The Associated Press contributed to this report. Jennifer Griffin currently serves as a national security correspondent for FOX News Channel . The U.S. Government Accountability Office has overturned the award of a potential nine-year, $19.9 billion contract to a New Jersey company for moving military household goods worldwide. The lucrative Global Household Goods Contract, first awarded in April to American Roll-on Roll-off Carrier Group, or ARC, of Parsippany, N.J., is intended to address military families' long-standing problems with delays and damaged goods during moves to assignments, according to the Department of Defense U.S. Transportation Command. The GAO decision came in response to protests lodged by two of ARC's competitors, alleging that ARC lacks the experience and capability to move the estimated 400,000 members of the military and their families, as well as DOD employees, across the globe each year.
