32: Right turn in US politics, Aldo Cordeiro Sauda on Bolsonaro’s Brazil In this week’s episode, we discuss Brazil’s President-elect Jair Bolsonaro with Brazilian socialist Aldo Cordeiro Sauda and U.S.-based socialist Todd Chretien. This weekend, in a terrifying development in international politics, Brazil’s neo-fascist Bolsonaro won the presidential elections. Since that time, the military has paraded openly through the streets, raided universities and raised the prospect of attacks on Brazil’s social movements and oppressed populations. Recorded just days before the October 28 election, we talk to Aldo and Todd about the background to Bolsonaro’s rise after 14 years of rule by the Workers Party (PT). Aldo identifies the constitutional coup against former President Dilma Rousseff as a turning point in the advance of the far right. We talk about why the ruling class has swung behind Bolsonaro and what the rise to power of a neo-fascist means for the left specifically. We end by talking about the labor and social movements, which still have real organization and power in Brazil, and how to build international solidarity with their struggles. Aldo Cordeiro Sauda is a journalist and activist in Brazil’s Party of Socialism and Liberation (PSOL). He also covered the Arab Spring for Estado de São Paulo and Folha de São Paulo and is currently a masters candidate in political science at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP). In our opener, we talk about the hard right turn in U.S. politics since the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. The Trumpification of the US is now 22 days old. The major british bookmaker Ladbrooks, is offering 'evens' that Trump will be impeached or resign withing his first term. Nancy DeVos may have gobs of money, but that does not seem to keep the teachers happy. Flynn has some memory problems about what he did or did not say to Russia. Oh and his head whipping boy Robin Townly, an NSC senior director for Africa and a former Marine, was denied access remains unclear. But his departure appears to be another problem for Flynn roughly two months into the job as President Trump’s top adviser on national security issues.
Trumpification is 5 days away. Oddly the country seems less united than ever.What sort of world are we facing?

It might depend on size of Trump's loss to Hillary. If Trump loses popular vote to Clinton by 15-20%, the GOP will be marginalized for a long time! Trump will cease to be a "principal" in the GOP party (as if he ever was) and the "infighting" will begin in earnest. Tne GOP's damage control won't be able to prevent the Trumpification of a good # of GOP office holders who'll be flushed down the drain in the wake of a substantial Democratic Trump-backlash. The Democrats have the edge when it comes to voter turnout in November (Clinton's voter turnout efforts) and will capture many states that are nominally red/swing-state. Trump's "base" supporters will fall away from the GOP as a party and what remains of that political entity will be maintained by a threadbare contingent of party loyalists keeping the apparatus on life-support. It'll revert to being a regional (Southern-based) party with greatly diminished prospects of returning to a truly national presence. The Democrats will have the White House, the U.S. Senate and be roughly equal to the GOP in the House of Representatives. If The election becomes a full-blown landslide the House will revert back to Democratic control with Madam Speaker Nancy Pelosi again assuming the gavel. Under this scenario the Democrats will engage in a 100-day sprint to churn out as much legislation as possible along with confirming moderate U.S. Ct. of Appeals Judge Merrick Garland as Supreme Court Justice to replace the late Antonin Scalia. The Court becomes a 5-4 "moderate" majority & a bullwark against right-wing "roll-back" case law. Of course, Republicans will be sputtering, fuming + foaming at the mouth at their new-found precarious position of poliltical disadvantage.

In his book, EJ tracks the fracture of the Republican Party from the Goldwater Movement in the early 60s all the way up to Donald Trump. In our conversation, EJ outlines that fracture and emphasizes the significance of Trump’s revolt on the right. We discussed the Trumpification of the Right, the past and future of American conservatism, and what Burkean or moderate conservatives such as David Brooks or Michael Gerson should do in the face of a Trump takeover.
