Donate which you prefer: $1=tea and $2=coffee Did you know you can learn more English by staring at your screen? Today I give you 3 of the best, and often forgotten, American Television (T.V.) shows to watch to improve your English. What 3 new vocabulary words did you learn from this podcast? What you'll learn: Three T.V. shows to watch More vocabulary words Improve your listening skills in English Visit my website at www.paradigmenglish.com this Friday to learn 3 more T.V. shows to watch as well as a list of classic black and modern black (African-American) T.V. shows to begin watching. Transcript: "American entertainment is famous across the globe. From T.V. film, and streaming, American sitcoms and cinema are everywhere. But how can you use something so easy as watching the screen to improve your English? I'm Ashley Rhone from Paradigm English and the podcast Living in English:365. I am going to tell you THREE excellent T.V. shows to watch to improve your English. So, to get started, like this episode, subscribe to this podcast, and get ready to be entertained. Many of you already know, and probably watch such shows like Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM), and they are all fantastic in their own, very different way. However, me, an English teacher, recommends these three T.V. American T.V. shows to improve your English. Also, most Americans do not say "T.V. Series" when speaking directly about a show on T.V. We prefer to use say "T.V. Show/Series" unless we are referring to a series that we enjoy. 1) The Golden Girls Okay, listen. This is one of my favorites. Not only is it hilarious, but the acting is superb. The 'Golden' in title, if you didn't know, is a reference to all of the 4 main characters' age: they're aged 50+. The show is about how 4 older women who, because of very different life experiences, have to learn to live together and the friendship that is created from that. I think this show is great for you not because I like it, as well as millions of Americans, but because each character has a different American dialect which helps you get used to hearing non-standard accents. Also, there are plenty of dialogues that will help you improve your listening skills 2) The Simpsons This is a T.V. show that my mother wouldn't allow me to watch as a child. Ha! Today, it's one of my favorites. I love it so much that I have even used it to teach grammar points and vocabulary! It's versatile! Okay, okay, enough about me, listen, this show is fantastic for learners. Not only has it been around for more than 3 decades, so you'll never run out of episodes to watch, but it's probably something you watched at some point in your life. This is great because you already have background knowledge about the show, which will help you comprehend the episode. Additionally, there are many different situations and dialogues to increase your vocabulary and listening skills. The Simpsons is an all-around terrific choice for you as you learn English. 3) The Daily Show it's won numerous awards, has been running for over 2 decades, focuses on political and news satire. Satire, as defined by Merriam-Webster's Learner's Online Dictionary, is "a way of using humor to show that someone or something is foolish, weak, bad, etc. : humor that shows the weaknesses or bad qualities of a person, government, society, etc." This use of satire is why The Show has referred to itself as "fake news" in the past. In fact, a 2010 research paper by then undergraduate scholar Michelle Newman stated that, "The Daily Show draws its comedy and satire from recent news stories, political figures, media organizations, and often uses self-referential humor as well." Why should you watch This show, as its name implies, is produced Daily. Now, because of COVID19 and the global pandemic of Coronavirus, the show is produced by its host, Trevor Noah, outside of the studio and minus the studio audience. You can catch this show on Comedy Central (CC) and Youtube. This show incorporates many different styles and dialects (the Noah is originally from South Africa). It has familiar topics for those of you that also consume news about world events. Additionally, it allows you to see American humor, which may be a little different than your own country. Thanks for listening to how to improve your English with American T.V. Shows. I hope you have enjoyed this list. Subscribe to this podcast to get more tips and insights into learning English.
