Another week, another episode in the wind down phase of Talkin' Thrones, Season 6, Episode 3, entitled "Oathbreaker," a reverse of a previous Season 4 episode, only with a much different context behind it. Despite this still being an action season, we're finding that Season 6 is mirroring Season 5 a little bit more than we would have liked, considering that we're getting into the phase of set up/spinning our wheels until the last two episodes, leaving a lot of room on the table for some actually juicy scenes. We start by addressing a booboo that Professor Pat made last week, mistakenly thinking that Bran seeing his father's fight with Arthur Dayne happened in last week's episode, when it really happened in this episode. Cersei & Jaime attempt to get the attention of the other members of the Small Council, but they ignore them, while the High Sparrow continues his games with Margaery & Tommen. Dany is finally brought back to Vaes Dothrak, and discovers what her fate was originally supposed to be. We also check in briefly with Sam & Gilly, still on their way south to Oldtown. In Braavos, Arya continues to train with sticks & faces, and eventually is able to get her eyesight back. In Meereen, Varys interrogates the woman who was assisting the Sons of the Harpy and discovers that (shocker) the Slave Masters of Astapor, Yunkai & Volantis are bankrolling the Sons. God can we be done with Meereen. At Winterfell, Ramsay shores up his alliances, with the Umbers turning on their lifelong oath to the Starks by presenting Ramsay with a gift. It all ends with the next gangbuster moment, with Jon, freshly back from the dead and now being seen as a god by the Wildlings, executing Alliser Thorne and the rest of the Watch mutineers, including Olly, before ultimately stating that his watch is ended and abandoning the position of Lord Commander. UMBERS 33:Yesterday we heard how the tribes of Gad, Reuben, and half the tribe of Manasseh promised to go ahead of their fellow Israelites into battle on the west side of the Jordan, because they were receiving land on the east side of the Jordan. In hindsight, I must say this was not a great idea. Because of how often all the men were required to go to Jerusalem for the holy assemblies, it must have been very easy to not attend those events and grow increasingly far from the Lord. PSALM 46:This was the inspiration for the hymn A Mighty Fortress Is Our God. The word translated by the GNT as ‘shelter’ in v.1 can also mean ‘refuge’. And the word translated as ‘refuge’ in verses 7 and 11 can also mean ‘secure height’. ACTS 5b:Yesterday we heard the sobering story of Ananias and Sapphira. Then, just when God was using the apostles to perform many miracles, they were arrested. GNT Translation notes: Acts 5:28 “We gave you strict orders not to teach [by the authority//in the name] of this man,” he said; “but see what you have done! You have spread your teaching all over Jerusalem, and you want to make us responsible for his death!”

Justin Tighe-Umbers: Are Air New Zealand to blame for increase in domestic fares?

Early Edition with Kate Hawkesby

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 27, 2020 3:47

Air New Zealand has released figures showing it has sold one million domestic airfares for less than $50 in the past year, a day after the body representing airports pointed to an 8.5 per cent overall increase in last 12 months.Inflation data showed airfares had increased 12 per cent in the last quarter.Airports New Zealand says the 12-month increase coincided with Jetstar's withdrawal from regional routes and the impact of an agreement between Air New Zealand and Qantas to co-operate in each other's domestic markets.Airports NZ chief executive Kevin Ward said the price increase means every domestic passenger was paying $14 more for their flight, on average, compared with the same period 12 months ago."Families, businesses and tourism will be the losers from the big jump in flight costs," said Ward."Increased fares translate directly to fewer people able to travel".Air New Zealand dropped lead-in fares to boost domestic demand when the market softened early last year. It also pledged to hold lead-in fares for a year at levels sold on Jetstar regional routes which the Qantas subsidiary pulled out of at the end of last year.It reduced its lowest fares on 41 domestic routes in February 2019, reducing some by up to 50 per cent. This meant some fares between the North Island and South Island fell as low as $39.Air NZ chief revenue officer Cam Wallace said the response to the reduction to the airline's lowest fares has been fantastic."When we announced this overhaul in February last year, we committed to making three quarters of a million seats a year available for less than $50. It's terrific to have well and truly surpassed this and to hit the one million milestone.''About 600,000 of these fares sold for under $50 have been for flights on regional routes, said Wallace. He said the airline "remained committed'' to low fares but advised passengers to book early to get the best possible deals.Airports and airlines are lobbying the government over changes to the Civil Aviation Act, with airports worried about proposals that could change the way they set prices.Ward said according to his organisation's calculations, the leap in domestic airfares will cost passengers an extra $165 million for a full year."Domestic air fare increases on this scale are many times greater than the rate of inflation, and have a choking effect on regions at a time the Government is investing in provincial economies," he said. There was no official data on fares for individual routes, so it was difficult to tell if some cities and towns have been harder hit than others. The body representing airlines operating here, the Board of Airline Representatives, said NZ airports had fired double-barrelled shots across airlines' wings.Executive director of BARNZ, Justin Tighe-Umbers, said domestic airfares have increased, but it was a verifiable fact that airlines are under cost pressure."Jet fuel prices have steadily climbed by around a third since 2017 and costs for air navigation and CAA services are rising. Airfares rise in response to cost increases. "Tighe-Umbers also said it is just scaremongering by NZ Airports to say New Zealand's regional airports are put at risk by the Government's proposal to remove a clause in the CAA legislation that allows airports to "charge as they think fit"."On the contrary, airlines want regional airports to invest for growth in terminals and services – and they have shown they're willing to fund investment," he says"We've seen this recently with new terminals and upgrades at airports in Nelson, New Plymouth and Tauranga."Changing the legislation should not change the commercial model between airports and airlines. Airports will continue to be able to negotiate freely with airline customers," he said.

Early Edition with Kate Hawkesby

Auckland's fuel infrastructure needs immediate investment to ensure there isn't complete disruption to Auckland Airport if something goes wrong with the supply line. That's the finding of a government inquiry into the 2017 Ruakaka pipeline failure which caused a fuel crisis resulting in the cancellation of more than 100 flights at Auckland Airport. Some petrol stations ran out of fuel. The report, released today, said the damage to the pipeline, which provides the main supply of petrol, diesel and jet fuel for Auckland, "must have occurred" by a contractor looking for kauri logs on the site three years earlier. It established a 16-tonne digger was working on the property between August 26 and 28 2014, a few months after Refining NZ had carried out a technical inspection of the whole pipeline.Despite the landowner advising the contractor not to dig in the back paddock that contained the pipeline, a neighbour saw the digger working there."Although the contractor denied it, we were satisfied that he struck the pipeline with the bucket of the digger and damaged it," the report said."The contractor did not report the damage to anyone. The landowner was not aware that the pipe had been exposed and struck."Pipeline repair work site at Ruakaka in 2017. File photo / Michael CunninghamAlmost three years later, on September 14, 2017, the inquiry found the pipeline ruptured where it had been damaged and jet fuel escaped into several properties. The rupture stopped the transmission of fuels into Auckland for 10 days and airlines had to limit jet fuel to 30 per cent of their usual usage, which caused significant disruption to flights to and from Auckland. The inquiry found Auckland's jet fuel supply was currently not sufficiently resilient."With only a single supply chain for jet fuel, a single point of failure at any point along that chain can cause a complete disruption of supply to Auckland Airport."There is limited storage near the airport to provide cover for an outage and the number of days of cover that storage provides is decreasing as the daily demand for jet fuel grows."This means our vulnerability is increasing."Parts of the supply chain would not be able to meet basic demand in a few years' time, let alone recover from, or provide resilience, during any significant outage. The report concluded there was a need to invest in further infrastructure without delay. This was to ensure that capacity in the supply chain near the airport will be able to meet the increasing demand, and there was sufficient cover for an outage."Ideally, the industry would develop a second permanent supply chain," it said. The report also called for a new National Fuel Emergency Plan, and for the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment to take a leadership role.Current fuel supply chain infrastructure was largely owned or controlled by the three major fuel companies: BP, Mobil and Z Energy. The 2017 incident exposed major holes in this infrastructure.Dr Nirmal Nair, from Auckland University's Department of Electrical, Computer, Software Engineering, said the fuel rupture incident "brought into focus the relative blase and unprepared attitude of successive New Zealand governments towards formulating a serious national fuel emergency policy"."The national supply situation appears to be not adequately addressed," Nair said.University of Auckland Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Tava Olsen said the report findings were "important but not surprising".The report called for a new National Fuel Emergency Plan. File photo / Michael Cunningham"The creation of the national fuel emergency plan seems overdue . . . hopefully they will look at Whenuapai as a potential back-up site for Auckland jet fuel rather than expecting the commercial companies to shoulder all back-up responsibilities."The report found it "was lucky" that the rupture happened when and where it did."The location was easy to access and not in a highly populate...

SPECIAL GUEST: KATE UMBERS (WSU) Stop murdering invertebrates. OK? Good. Dr Kate Umbers is an animal behaviour expert from Western Sydney University who is fighting to make sure that invertebrates are recognised as the wonderful creatures they are. In an interview with In Situ Science she says that perhaps the arts are the best way of teaching people about the majesty of the other 99% of the animal kingdom. By forming meaningful relationships between people and invertebrates, we can start appreciating them as things other than the creepy, crawly stereotypes they have been given. Kate along with 29 other women across Australia is a ‘Superstar of STEM’, recognised by Science and Technology Australia for their contribution to science. These superstars are acting as role models to increase the representation of women in science. We talk about her experiences with the Superstars of STEM initiative as well as her breakthrough role on Romper Room as a child. Game of Thrones Philosophy Breakdown

Is it ever OK to slaughter your family’s enemies in pursuit of revenge? Should you kick your enemies’ children out of their ancestral homes? Is it better to be feared or loved? Should you follow a religion known for its penchant for human burnt sacrifices, even if it seems to be the “right” one? Hopefully, these aren’t questions you’re pondering. But if you’re a character in the HBO show Game of Thrones, these philosophical dilemmas are an unavoidable part of life. As you can imagine, life sucks in the fictional land of Westeros. But that’s all the more reason why the characters need philosophy. And since our own world sucks only slightly less, it’s just as much a reason for the rest of us to examine the philosophical questions of Game of Thrones as well. As far out from our daily experience as these questions appear on the surface, they aren’t too different from the main problems of human existence. In this first episode, we discuss the many philosophical themes in episode 1 of season 7 of the show, which aired in July of this year. Is it cool to kill off people in revenge? When, if ever, is revenge appropriate? What is the relationship between revenge and justice? – Arya and the Freys  Should you judge people as individuals or members of collectives? Should you show mercy to your enemies? – Sansa + Jon with the Umbers and Karstarks  Is Machiavelli’s philosophy of power right? Is it better to be feared than loved? Is goodness naive? – Cersei and Jamie’s conversation  How can a god be good + all-knowing + all-powerful in a world of suffering? What can we say about the gods of Westeros compared to “real-world” religions? – Sandor Clegane and the Brotherhood Without Banners  Can supernatural events happen? How would we know? What would they mean? – Sandor Clegane’s fire visions  Should a homeland or birthplace you’ve never seen have moral and psychological significance? – Daenarys and Dragonstone  What is the right way to think about the nature of time, legend, and history? Does history repeat itself? Are we at the end of history? When does the past fail to predict the future? – Samwell and the Archmaester

The names of professional sports teams often have surprising histories -- like the baseball team name inspired by, of all things, trolley-car accidents. Plus, some questions to debate at your next barbecue: Is a hot dog a sandwich if it's in a bun? And when exactly does dusk or dawn begin? Dictionary editors wrestle with such questions all the time, and it turns out that writing a definition is a lot harder than you think. Finally, a new word for your John Hancock: When you use your finger to sign an iPad, what do you call that electronic scribble? Plus, hang a Roscoe, Peck's Bad Boy, coming down the pike, sozzling, stroppy, grammagrams, and umbers. FULL DETAILS Try this riddle: You throw away the outside and cook the inside, then eat the outside and throw away the inside. What is it?   A caller from Los Angeles, California, wonders why we say hang a Roscoe for "turn right" when giving directions. This phrase, as well as hang a Louie, meaning "turn left," go back at least as far as the 1960's. These expressions are much like the military practice of using proper names for directional phrases in order to maintain clarity. Some people substitute the word bang for  hang, as in bang a Uey (or U-ee) for "make a U-turn." The phrase coming down the pike refers to something approaching or otherwise in the works. The original idea had to do with literally coming down a turnpike. In the late 19th century, Wisconsin newspaperman George Wilbur Peck wrote a series of columns about a fictional boy who was the personification of mischief. The popular character inspired stage and movie adaptations, and the term Peck's Bad Boy came to refer to someone similarly incorrigible. Quiz Guy John Chaneski tees up a trivia quiz about how sports teams got their names. For example, are the Cleveland Browns so named because one of their founders was named Paul Brown, or because of the orange-brown clay on the banks of the Cuyahoga River? A listener in Bayfield, Wisconsin, says her grandmother used to tell her to go sozzle in the bathtub. John Russell Bartlett's 1848 Dictionary of Americanisms defines the verb to sozzle this way: "to loll; to lounge; to go lazily or sluttishly about the house." A professional shoemaker in Columbiana, Ohio, wonders why the words cobbler and cobble have negative connotations, given that shoemaking is a highly skilled trade. The notion of cobbling something together in a haphazard or half-hearted way goes back to the days when a cobbler's task was more focused on mending shoes, rather than making them. But Grant quotes a passage from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar in which such a tradesman articulates the nobility of his profession: I am, indeed, sir, a surgeon to old shoes; when they are in great danger, I recover them. As proper men as ever trod upon neat's leather have gone upon my handiwork. The slang term stroppy is an adjective meaning "annoying" or "difficult to deal with." It might be related to the similarly unpleasant word, obstreperous. If you simply read each letter aloud, you can see why O.U.Q.T.! U.R.A.B.U.T.! can be interpreted to mean "Oh, you cutie! You are a beauty!" A statement expressed that way with letters, numerals, or drawings is called a rebus, or, if it's solely expressed with letters and numerals, a grammagram. Great examples include the F.U.N.E.X.? ("Have you any eggs?") gag by the British comedy duo The Two Ronnies, and William Steig's book CDC? A door divided across the middle so that the bottom half stays closed while the top half opens is known as a Dutch door, a stable door, or a half-door. Some people informally call it a Mr. Ed door, named after a TV series popular in the 1960's about a talking horse named Mr. Ed who frequently stood behind such a door. Is a hot dog a sandwich if it's in a bun? Why or why not? Is a burrito a sandwich? (A Massachusetts judge actually ruled on that question in 2006.) What about a veggie wrap? These kinds of questions about the limits and core meanings of various words are more complicated that you might think. Lexicographers try to tease out the answers when writing dictionary entries. Some people are using the word fingature to mean that scribble you do on an electronic pad when asked to sign for a credit card payment. A woman who grew up in Albuquerque recalls that when one of her schoolmates got in trouble, she and their peers would say ominously, Umbers! This slang term is apparently a hyperlocal version of similarly elongated exclamations like Maaaaaan! Or Burrrrrn! that youngsters use to call attention to another's faux pas. An Indianapolis, Indiana, listener says that his mother-in-law was asked by a child where she was going, would jokingly sing that she was going to the Turkey trot trot trot, across the lot, lot, lot, feeling fine, fine, fine until Thanksgiving time. Trouble. Trouble trouble. Trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble on the double. Sounds like she was singing a version of the Turkey Trot Blues.   This episode is hosted by Martha Barnette and Grant Barrett. -- A Way with Words is funded by its listeners: http://waywordradio.org/donate Get your language question answered on the air! This month I find out that animals should be careful when choosing a mate, picking a partner that matches them in quality, else they might face an early grave! I discover that a mutation in a taste receptor gene has helped macaques in Japan to become thieves. And in the scientific spark, I talk to Kate Umbers from the University of Western Sydney, who works on a variety of topics, mainly related to understanding the mechanisms, functions and evolution of biological colouration. She tells me what sparked her interest in becoming a scientist.
