Sometime in the mid-1980s, an episode of Cagney and Lacey blew my mind. Actually, I was furious. The writers DIDN'T bother to finish it! Inexplicably, we got to the end of the episode WITHOUT getting to the end of the story. The bad guy wasn't caught. Justice wasn't served. It was a ridiculous, shameful mess. ... and I COULDN'T stop thinking about it. Maybe that should have been a clue, but I've always been a little slow to work things out. Humans hate loose ends. In storytelling and copywriting we call them open loops. In the hands of great writers – or even slightly above-average ones – they can be a ruthless engine of tension. Earlier this week, I got a note from someone who'd finished one of my novels. She loved it, but complained that she couldn't get anything done while she was reading it. I'd love to tell you it's because I'm a once-in-a-generation kind of thriller writer, but really it comes down to the relentless layering of open loops – 120,000 words of questions that need answers. We've seen that stories get more attention than facts, but the the science goes way deeper than that. Studies show that audiences focus more and remember more when they have to work for it. This insight is not just for storytellers, by the way, it's for anyone who creates content. Hemmingway famously finished each day's work in the middle of sentence. Smart guy. He'd learned that the best way to drive his attention back to the blood-soaked typewriter was to leave the sentence unfinis

At age 15 she suffered a nearly fatal attack of rheumatic fever. The illness caused chronic health problems and ultimately influenced who she would become: It was during her long confinement with the illness that she gave up dreams of being a pianist and resolved to become a writer.Upon graduating from Columbus High School in 1933, Carson—as she was called—plunged herself into reading, studying Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, Chekhov and other great Russian writers of pre-Revolutionary times. At the age of 17 she sold a valuable piece of family jewelry to move to New York from Savannah. Losing her money shortly after arriving in New York, she worked odd jobs to afford writing classes at Columbia. For the next three years she worked diligently at writing and became acquainted with New York's literary community.Recurring illness afflicted Carson, and when she became ill she would return to Columbus to recuperate. It was during one of these return trips that she met John Reeves McCullers, Jr., whom she married in 1937 at the age of 20. In their early years the couple moved to Charlotte and then to Fayetteville, North Carolina. The marriage was strained, but in these years Carson wrote two novels: The Heart is a Lonely Hunter and Reflections in a Golden Eye.Carson's relationship with John was marked by separations, reunions, a divorce and remarriage. Eventually, Carson moved to New York and supported herself with Guggenheim Fellowships and publication of her stories and essays in magazines. With the death of her father, Carson's mother and sister came to live with her in Nyack, New York. The rest of Carson's life was a mixture of literary success, personal unhappiness, and unrelenting bad health. The Ballad of the Sad Cafe and Member of the Wedding appeared in 1943 and 1946. She turned Member of the Wedding into a play which opened on Broadway in 1950 and won several awards. With age, Carson faced compounding health problems. After a final stroke and a long comatose period, she died in October 1967.From https://www.georgiawomen.org/carson-mccullers.For more information about Carson McCullers:The Heart is a Lonely Hunter: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/110964/the-heart-is-a-lonely-hunter-by-carson-mccullers/"Carson McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians": http://www.mccullerscenter.org"Unhappy Endings": https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2001/12/03/unhappy-endings"The Closeting of Carson McCullers": https://www.theparisreview.org/blog/2020/02/03/the-closeting-of-carson-mccullers/"Ship's Reporter Interview: Carson McCullers": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5IAuT0w67E

My guest this week is singer and author, Jizzy Pearl. Jizzy made a name for himself fronting the Band Love/Hate in the early 90's and has toured with bands such as AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, Dio and many others. After Love/Hate disbanded, Jizzy went on to front bands such as LA Guns and Ratt. Now Jizzy is the lead singer for Quiet Riot. Not only is Jizzy a fantastic lead singer but he is also an amazing author! He has recently re-released his three books," I Got More Crickets Then Friends", "Unhappy Endings", and "Angst for the Memories". These books are a super fun read with a mixture of non-fiction and fiction short stories. Jizzy also has his latest single "Soul Mama" out now on Golden Robot Records and has a new single coming out August 24th titled "Wanna Be Somebody". I had a great time chatting with Jizzy, I hope you enjoy the show! Thanks for listening. Welcome to Episode 196 of Broadcast Geeks! On this podcast we discuss all things geek and nerd related, provided our DVR’s have space and our Netflix accounts are our own and none others. This week, the Geeks (Jake, Mitch and Matt Orrin) are virtually together to discuss all things geek. Some great shows have ended, or are ending, both in the sense of the season and also its run. Venture Brothers have finally (and sadly!) met their end, even though we've only gotten 7 seasons in 16 years. That show is super funny and will always be remembered fondly by us. Doom Patrol's season has also ended, and what a weird one that was! Hoping that if the show continues, they do something for Larry's character because he seems to be getting a lame story line. Cyrano de Bergerac on Deep Space Nine. From seventeenth-century France to mid-1980s Washington State to a twenty-fourth-century space station, Edmond Rostard’s classic play Cyrano de Bergerac has proved eminently adaptable to new settings. Its timeless theme of unrequited love has resonated with fresh audiences with each interpretation, while the central tragicomic set piece—in which a man woos his beloved on behalf of a friend—never fails to hit the dramatic high notes. In this episode of Primitive Culture, hosts Clara Cook and Duncan Barrett look at Ronald D. Moore’s loose adaptation of the Cyrano de Bergerac in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode “Looking for par’Mach in All the Wrong Places.” We compare this version with both the original 1897 play and the 1987 Steve Martin comedy Roxanne, while considering the rituals of romance—in real life and on screen—and what happens to consent in such tales of comedic deception. We also ask whether, at the end of the day, all love is unrequited. In this episode, we continue to educate ourselves on classic horror movies we really should have seen by now. This time, Nate watched The Shining! As always, there are spoilers, so check it out if you haven't already, then come on back for Nate's first impressions, and some wild mass guessing by Jay and James. Oh, and I wasn't there, so my capsule review is this: Kubrick really captured the isolation and unease that was the mood of the book, but rather than tell a story about a damaged man attempting to overcome his demons and a kid growing to use the gifts he'd been given, he told a story about some creepy kid and his creepy dad totally freaking out a screaming lady. Very spook, much scare. Watch the axe scene in slow mo, it's delightful. 8/10 Contribute to our Extra Life team Arc*Aid! James’ book West of Pale is now available in it’s print edition!
